334.0. "$5000, 3 weeks off: where would 2 of you go?" by ZENDIA::FERGUSON (A blues guitar echoes in my mind) Thu Jan 14 1993 08:55

Say for instance that you and a friend (or wife, SO, etc) were given
$5000.00 (for two of you) and three weeks off from work to go on
 	a vacation of your choice.

	Where would you go?
	Why?

You can go multiple places, but, the budget is $5000.00 (roughly).

Interested in hearing where people would go for their ideal $5000
	vacation for two.

1.) Japan

2.) Australia & New Zealand

3.) The Alps - skiing

4.) Alaska, by ship from Seattle

5.) Cancun - scuba diving

6.) Yellowstone and/or the Grand Canyon

7.) Mardi Gras/New Orleans

8.) Oktoberfest/Munich

9.) Festivale/Brazil

10.) San Francisco - again!

Domestic flights would be first class; not enough cash for international
flights, although that would be preferrable. Minimum four star hotels -
no friggin' Holiday Inns or Best Westerns - strictly Hyatts, Ritz-Carltons

Cheap-O flight to Dublin. Explore area. Ferry to Liverpool, drive to
London via southern England stopping at Stonehenge, Winchester and
Stratford. See a London show, visit museums. Overnight sleeper to
Edinbourgh. Explore area. Tour of highlands, stopping in
Avimore, Inverness, over to Ft. William, with mountains treks every few
days. Ferry to Ilse of Skye. Back on mainland, tour western highlands
(Loch Lomond, Glen Coe). Train to Ayr and fly home from Prestwick.

Would stay in self catering cottages and B&B's. In London, one night

1. Koh Samui, Thailand - island in the Gulf of Siam although now that
they have a small airport I'd consider heading down the Malasian coast a
bit. If you go to Koh Samui, hit Boon's Bungalow for some fine mushroom
soup ;-)

2. Trekking in Bhutan (Nepal as a 2nd choice). You get the Himalayas and
they only let in 200 foreigners a year, so it's pretty pristine compared
to some of the Nepal treks. If Nepal and only 3 weeks, do the trek we did
heading of north Kathmandu. You get to ~15,600 over a beautiful pass.

3. Pub crawling in Ireland

4. Patagonia

5. Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, or Yellowstone

6. diving in Maui with Jerry :-)

Yow! Lots of vacation places!

Let me see. Let's say the time frame is approximately the last week in Oct
until Mid november, may shift by a week or 2.

- New Zealand / Australia is definitely a place i'd love to visit, someday.
don't know much about the pricing and what not, but, i'd think you'd burn
up $5k pretty quick ... at least half of that for airfare. Has anyone
in here been "down under" ? In oct/nov, it would be spring there.

- hawaii -> this is a place i'd like to check out as well. i'd love to check
out "5-O" headquarters (actually, the building where 5-0 was hq'd is the
only palace on american soil). lots of cool place to see in hawaii.

- canadian rockies; unforetunately, probably not a lot of skiing there in
oct/nov. a future destination, someday... sometime...

This place used to advertise in the various DH publications.
Lately I've been seeing more ads for the Puerto Rico place,
which is a competitor. Also, I don't think this Club Dead (Jamaica)
ever had anything to do with Tom Stack's (the artist) Club Dead, as
they never used Tom's art work.

Old Hippies Need A Vacation Too!

An alternative resort has opened in eastern Jamaica, high on a
mountain top, overlooking beautiful Port Antonio Harbor. This resort
is different in that it is owned and operated by Deadheads (Fans of
the Grateful Dead) for Deadheads. Most young people that go to
Jamaica go to Negril and spend their whole vacation getting hustled
and hassled out of their hard earned money and often come back with a
bad impression of Jamaica. They never get to see the most beautiful
part of the island... the rain forests, the mountains and the northern
    coast.
This is why Bliss Resort was created. They offer first class
accomodations, spectacular views, a friendly staff, great food, good
vibes, and lots of fun things to do and see like horseback riding,
sailboating, raft rides, sandy beaches, hidden lagoons, waterfalls and
rainbows. They treat people like thhey would like to be treated
    themselves.
Port Antonio is a small town with lots of history, surronded
by the Blue mountains and natural harbors. It is truly Heaven on
    Earth! Deadheads will love it.
For more information they have a toll free number:

Which isn't listed in my file, sigh....

I'd like to go someplace.... but I haven't figured out where just

"The Mouse that roared" was the Duchy of Grand Fenwick. For $5k, you
could probably buy the place (now there's a thought :-) ).

    re travel to Oz (Australia)

Figure on burning $1k-$1.5k per person on round trip airfares, cattle
class. Also figure on at least a week to recover from one hell of a
flight. I keep telling myself that next time I'll take a couple of
weeks and book passage on a freighter (at least until the new, improved
    vacation policy came along).

Travel within Oz tends to be very expensive, although internal airfares
have dropped now that the airlines are allowed to compete. Accomodation
can be expensive too (hotel clerks etc often get time-and-a-half or
double time for working outside of 9-5... it adds up fast).

One good approach, if you are not pressed for time, is to buy an old VW
bus or something similar and drive up the coast (or around, or
whatever). For 'Men at Work' fans, this is known as travelling in a
fried out combie. Australia has some great cities, but there is a lot
of interesting stuff in between. There is also a lot of desert.

i don't get this; what's the significance of taking I-70 east? where does it
lead? I-90 runs thru NY and MA, I-80 is in northern PA, and I-76 is in
southern PA, so there's no way there can be an I-70 anywhere near NY; where
does it lead to? DC? or am i totally missing the point?

> I-70 leaves Denver and heads east...THE way to get to NY from Colo

maybe it's how you start heading to NY, but i don't see how it can get all
the way there; does it terminate somewhere before the coast by running into
another interstate? the x0 interstates head east-west, with I-90 being the
all the way north and I-10 being all the way south; the x5 interstates head
north-south, with I-95 being all the way east and I-5? being all the way west;
anyway, i can continue to spout useless highway knowledge, but i'll get to
my point; if I-80 is entirely south of NY, then there's no way that I-70 can
hit NY; does it merge with something else (something around I-74, perhaps)
somewhere in Ohio?

Freaks! There's a word you don't hear too much any more! Back in those days,
when we were asked why we were stopped (by the cops) for no apparent reason,
we'd say, "long hair."

OK, another one of those opinion-type questions.

Ok, pretend that you've been to austria and germany in the last
12 months and you spent 10 days there. Also, pretend that you've
never spent time in england and scotland.

where would you go for 12 days?

England/Scotland?

-or-

Belgium/France/Germany/Austria maybe italy?

But I would love to spend time either in

Portugal/Spain/Marakesh or the French/Swiss Alps

I've been to Germany/Austria, and then I went to England for
work trips. I *loved* Germany/Austria bigtime! Same for England.
I would not want to be without my fantastic experience in England.

Therefore, if it's on the list, I'd go to England/Scotland for the
12 days. GREAT brew for sure! I'd arrive in England and map out
a route that would include Bath, Stonehendge, Wales (try the Felenfoel
Ale!), and then head towards the northern border of Scotland staying
at B+B's and Inn's along the way. Get in some cities like London for
a day or so, Edinburg, and mostly soak up the country life.

That would be a helluva trip!

If I had my choice for a 3rd trip, Belgium would be on top of the list.

Fly to London, spending three or four days sightseeing in the city as
well as Salisbury (Stonehenge) and Winchester/Stratford-upon-Avon.
Check out the usual things such as St Paul's, Tower of London, Royal
Museum...Lot's of pubs and ethnic food type places.

Take an overnight sleeper train to Edinburg and visit around there.
Edinburg is one of the most beautiful cities on the planet. Rent a car
there and tool around, visiting pubs, breweries, wiskey distilleries.
Follow east coast north, enjoy the scenery, maybe stop at St Andrew's.

Tour through the Cairngorm Mtns and do a wee bit o'hill walking.
Visit and/or stay over in Avimore or Inverness. Inverness has a cool
performing arts center with Sunday afternoon jazz (at least they used
    to.)

Curl over to Fort William and climb Ben Nevis (highest peak in the UK).
Continue south checking out Loch Lomond (heaven on earth) then take
ferry over to Glasgow. Catch a concert there then back to Edinburg to
drop off car. Take train to Preswick airport (about 2 hrs from
    Edinburg) for return trip home.

Check the SCOTLAND notes file for tips, addresses for info, phone
numbers and all kinds of good stuff.

Well, we're already planning to go to Ireland for 1 week. It is
where to go after Ireland....

Ireland->Belgium (europe)

-or-

Ireland->England/Scotland

Deb heard so much about ireland from me and my irish friends (1 who is
in the states right now - i took him MT biking yesturday! he loved it!)
that she wants to go... plus, when i was there, i worked, slept, and
drank... not much sightseeing!!! working 12-14 hr days doesn't leave
much time to play....

I too have much roots in england/scotland; i'm 13th generation
american (ancestors came over the pond w/ william penn)... plus, the
ales are supposedf to be totally yummie.

BTW, we will be renting a car there. I tell ya, you can rent a car
cheaper in europe then in the states practically!! last year, in
germany, we rented a car for $185 for 10 DAYS! since i have a visa
gold card, i blow off the insurance...... i checked in the eurail
passes and they would have cost, for both of us, something like $500
for 10 days, then you're tied down to a schedule, etc... as long
as you arrange your car rental _from_ the US, it is cheap going; of
course, you do pay $45 to fill it up w/ petrol vs. $12 for the same
car in the states...

keep the opinions comin' ...

      re jc,

One other thing to consider is renting a movie. One of my alltime
fav's is one called "Local Hero". Gives a fanciful look at Scotland
through the eye's of an American named "MacIntyre". :-)

Speaking of movies (we were weren't we?), check out another one
called "Gregory's Girl". Also set in Scotland, it shows a bit of how
life is for a group of young working-class Scots.

Both Local Hero and Gregory's Girl were done by the same guy. Stephen
Foster comes to mind, but I'm not 100% certain. If you noticed,
Gregory is one of the band members in Local Hero. He may also be
the one that developed the crush on the girl with webbed feet, but
that might have been someone else. The same director also did
Comfort and Joy, which is about an Ice Cream war in Scotland. Sounds
a bit unexciting, but it was pretty good.

ok, lets just say that all of a sudden, you're on a plane to ireland and
you're gonna stay in ireland for 1 week with a rental car. where would
ya go? what would you make a point seeing?

lets further imagine that after 1 week in ireland, you get on the plane to
head back home and discover that it accidently left you in england and all
the flights were booked solid for 16 more days.... and, since the airline
messed up, they just happened to give you a rental car and some money for
you to tour around england and scotland. where would ya go? how would you
spend 16 days? what sights would you go and see???

though i've never been to Ireland so i can't say from experience, i
would go first to Tralle (only to see where some of my relatives come
from) and then drive down the west cost (same reason) checking out some
    of the small towns...

and they tell me Dingle is gorgeous...

if on the other island, :^) i would probably drive way up north to the
highlands and then come back through Edinburgh... i had such a great
time in that city when i was there... maybe try and see some of the
islands too... i'm not sure if i'd head for stonehenge or not... it
would be neat to see though... prolly spend a day or two in London
just becuz and do touristy things... visit Mmme Toussaud's again...
the tower... buckingham palace (the changing of the guard was pretty
    cool) and all that stuff...
