Strawberries is having a good sale this week. I picked
up Bob Marley's box set for $32.99 yesterday, which beats
even Noteworthy by at least $5. All their box sets are at
least 20% off, and all cd's are on sale. Think I might stop
back by today seeing I'll have more time to browse around.

331.4 | EMS sale over. Check out All Outdoors | NOVA::ZASTERA | | Wed Jan 06 1993 10:48 | 23 |
| the EMS 20% off everything sale just ended last Sunday. It had been going on
for more than a week I think.
I suggest you check out a place in Manchester, NH (if that's not too far from
you) called All Outdoors.
They have really good stuff and amazingly they cary a lot of brands that you
don't see at the other outdoor stores (EMS, REI, Wilderness House).
But here's the best part:
In addition to the usual NH benefit of no sales tax, All Outdoors will give
a 10% discount to anyone who is a member of any of a variety of environmental
or outdoor organizations, e.g. AMC, Sierra Club, Nature Conservency, etc.
All you've got to do is ask about the discount when you check out and
show your membership card.
Directions to All Outdoors:
Take 3 (Everett Turnpike) north to Queen City Bridge exit.
Take a right off the exit ramp then another immediate right to cross the bridge.
At first major cross street (Elm St., there's a light), take a left (north).
Follow Elm for less than a mile and watch for All Outdoors on your right.

Damn, I wish I'd known that last week. I spent a fair bit at All
Outdoors and didn't know they gave a discount. Hmm, a 10% discount on that
purchase would have covered the minimum annual dues ($15) for the Nature
Conservency.

I'll be buying one. They also have a 4-lb (is this a lot?) sleeping bag for
$24.99. Sale ends jan. 18.
I just realized that the person I was about to thank no longer works here, but
I'll say it anyway - Bob Bailey donated his old 1-person tent to me for the

It is a mild-rated bag (35-50 deg). The one I had used for a while (until I

6.5' x 6.5' x 48" square dome tent. Sweep-out door with screen door.
Urethane-coated nylon taffeta is water-resistant. Fiberglass shock-corded
poles. Rain fly and carry bag. Sleeps 2 adults. Mfr = Timber Top.
Apparently they can do mail order, but I don't have the full flyer with me so I

it unless you plan on camping only on sunny windless days. The rainfly
was more for show than fending off rain, and the coated nylon repelled
water for the time it took it to soak through its thickness. BTW, it
sounds exactly the same.
I don't think you can get a reasonable tent for under $100-150. Eureka
makes about the least expensive good tent that I know of.
Just one minor rainstorm in a leaky tent will convince you that you
didn't get a bargain.

easy solution mon. go out and buy yourself a 10' x 10' tarp and either
drape it over the tent or tie it some trees. cost of a tarp this size
is about $14.00

This one claims it's 6.5 feet square. I'd say you can probably squeeze inside
there. :-) I'm not sure I'd want to set up a tarp everytime I pitched the tent
(you remember what we went through on the dechead trip to
that-town-I-can't-remember-the-name-of in Western MA?).
Thanks for the info everyone.

| From the 1/20/93 San Francisco Chronicle (reprinted w/out permission)
Nestled in the genteel Dominican College area of San Rafael, complete
with a huge pool and cabana, Jerry Garcia's home is a far cry from the
"Brokedown Palace" immortalized in the Grateful Dead song.
It's full of light and amenities, including a four-person elevator with
chandelier. But since September the house has sat waiting for a buyer
who can afford $1.4 million to live in the footsteps of the legendary
musician. It's almost empty, but not quite--among the the boxes waiting
for transit are seven guitars and four banjos all lined up in their
cases.
And the place is full of Garcia memories, willingly recounted by
listing agents Esther Skolnik and Carla Himy. (Skolnik is the agent who
tripped and took a plunge into the pool when she was showing the house
recently.)
Upstairs, in the sunny living room with crown molding, the guitarist
sometimes played music; next door, in the banquet-sized dining room, he
spent hours working on his computer-generated artwork that's so hot
these days.
And, outside, he invited his musical cohort to enjoy the refurbished
pool (the second largest in Marin County, says Skolnik--"not quite
Olympic size") and the tree-canopied back yard, with refreshment coming
from the full kitchen in the cabana. If the guests didn't like the pool
water, they could always hop in the large hydromassage tub.
The living quarters include three bedrooms, five full baths and two
half-baths, but it's tempting to count an immense closet as a fourth
bedroom. (The whole house is full of walk-in storage areas.) It feels
as if something's missing as you walk from the master bedroom onto a
deck, and you soon realize it's because there's no hot tub in sight.
But no need to fret--the master bath comes equipped with Jacuzzi and
skylight.
Garcia has since moved on, but his San Rafael backyard is ringed by
four rental cottages that come with the property. If you're the lucky
buyer, you could probably find out from one of the longtime tenants how
it was having Jerry Garcia as a landlord.

btw, those who have 'em: is the 46" one sufficient? i know my legs will
hang off it, but, that's not the part that hurts when i sleep on the ground!

i have a regular thickness, regular length (i.e. NOT full body length)
thermarest; it was fine except for the one time that i used it in extremely
cold (i.e. about 0 degrees) weather; then i was fine except for the part of
me that was off of the thermarest - my legs were freezing
i would rather have the thin, long length (i.e. fll body length) thermarest;
but i don't want to own two; if you want the regular thickness, regular length
one, i will sell the pad and stuff-sack for 50% of what it costs new

331.65 | stay away from the short thermarests!!! | NOVA::ZASTERA | | Tue Aug 24 1993 16:38 | 21 |
| Thermasrests:
I've had em all:
72" x 20" x 1" ultra-light
48" x 20" x 1.5" regular
72" x 20" x 1.5" regular
56" x 25" x 2" camp rest
My opinion is that that short ones are NO GOOD. They are always un-
comfortable. You spend a lot of time trying to improvise a pillow so
you can start the TR at your shoulders. That never works too well.
So absolutely get one that is full-length (that means 72" or more).
If you're not worried about weight/bulk, might as well go for the really
big, comfy camp-rest (77" x 25" x 2" or even 2.5").
If you want to backpack with it, get the full-length regular (72"x20"x1.5").
That's what I've got now and I think it is the best compromise. I'd rather
have one a bit wider, but all the wide ones are also extra thick which makes
them too big for backpacking use (IMHO). Also, two of the extra wide
ones won't fit side by side in some small 2 person backpacking tents.

| I'd have to disagree with you Craig. I have the short one and have
used the long ones. Sure they might be a bit more comfortable, but I
don't think it's worth it. More weight, more bulk, more cost.
JC, if I were you I'd consider Rich's offer. The short ones go for
about $45 and the longs for abiout $60. So you could either pay $60
for a long or *around* $25 for a short.
Of course, prices are guesses and the usual "IMHO" disclaimer applies

re: -.1's prices
Dunno 'bout those prices, Mike. I think the full-length TR's cost more
than a Ben...
I got my full-sized one [not a Thermarest(tm)] for ~$70 in December 1991,
and aside from a very slow leak, it works great. Never been cold or
unconfortable. It aint light though @ 5-7 lbs. -- I wouldn't want to hike
to far with it.

OK, maybe my prices were off, but that supports my argument more. I
know a 3/4 thin one can be had for about $50. (mine was $45 2 yrs. ago)
If you're saying it's $100 bucks for a full length, and you wouldn't
want to hike with one, than its an obvious choice unless you can spare
the coins and are only going car-camping.
Mike
FWIW, I've never been uncomfortable on mine, but then again I sleep
like a log in most circumstances :-)

What I don't understand is why people bother going into the wilderness at
all if they're going to bring "soft" things, like inflatable matresses.
Heck, for all that extra weight and bulk, you can carry at least an extra
fifth of hard alchohol, sleep like a baby on all the pointy rocks in the
world, then walk off the bruises and bedsores the next day. :-)
C'mon folks, rough-it a bit. :-)

I'm working on it. The guy's out this week. I hope I'm early in the queue
(earlier than most of you, because I contacted him last Wednesday!)

I just bought a modem from Comp USA last weekend. I was unaware of the DEC
discount. Can I go back and get it?
