        Hello everyone and welcome to the 1992 edition of useless
        trivia!! The following information was gathered from set
        lists posted to this newsgroup as well as from listening
        to tapes from 1992.  Every set list was cross-referenced to
        at least two different sources, and we believe them to be
        correct.

        Please e-mail corrections to the following address, DO NOT
        post them. We will post a set of corrections at some point

        This year's addition contains several new features, including
        a summary of every year from 1974-1992, and a summary of the

Yes, dammit, this whole string is rather non-digressitory.  I've modified the 
note title to make it a bit more clear.

And while I hear, I'll prove my non-digressitory intent by posting another 
useless statistic...

Even though the dead took five months off this year, they still were among 
the top five grossing acts last year!

So, like, how _gross_ were they?

I'd like to know how many miles of tape get taped at an average Dead show.
Hmm... lets see..  figure anywhere from 500 to 1000 cassette decks?

3 hours X  1 7/8 Inches per second X 3600 seconds/hour X 500 = 
10,125,000 inches = 159.8 MILES!!!

		Y O W !!!

And that not including the DAT decks!

uhh, that seems like an awful lot of tapers...  but then again, we _are_ an
awful lot...

    Well the taping section is usually about 200 seats or limited to
    the first 200 tapers. There is rarely only one deck running per
    mic stand. Many get rejected for mail order. Not all tapers are 
    at every show, nor are all of the tape decks. So there *are* a 
    lot of us out there. I'd say easily over 1000 tapers around between 
    both coasts, Europe and all points in between. Maybe 300-500 tape 
    decks spinning at any given show. Not to mention decks spinning in
    hotel rooms after the show, in cars, trains & planes between runs, 
    tape decks touring with out their owners, etc. :-)

    how many people have taken the Myers-Briggs personality test?
    What did you score? the 3 Deadheads I know the scores for 
    in HLO (including myself) all scored INTP, which occurs in
    less than 1% of the population as a whole. Interesting 
    stuff.

I took it, but I forget what I scored...

Unfortunately, all-too often it is an abused and misused tool of management
for pigeon-holeing their employees. Its also crude, and doesn't take into
acount some very important inluencing factors (like dyslexia, which may
suppress a high aptitude for intuition, for example), and I would tend to
think there are way more than 16 personality types out there. 

Still, its a self discovery, and that itself makes it worthwhile. Just don't
fall into the trap of pigeon holing yourself.  Use it to open more doors to
self knowledge, not to close them!

    I'm not mis-using any information; I just thought it was
    interesting. I wonder how many deadheads are 'perceptive'
    (stream-of-conciousness) vd 'judgemental' (goal-oriented).
    
    Remember, I'm a professional statistician. Mis-using 
    information is my job, I know how and when to do it :-)

    I've never heard of it, is it available on-line?
    
    I just remember the counselors showing me funny splotches (most of
    which looked like puppies being tortured by cats wearing housedresses)
    and squiggly lines, then going in the corner in shaking their heads.

    yeah, i've taken the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) several
    times...  the results of my personality test were:
    
    		yes, i still have one...  :^)
    
    being reassured of that fact, they went on to say i was ENFP...
    supposed representing about 2% of the general population...  explains
    a lot of how i get along with my group which is predominantly 
    thinking over feeling and judging over percieving...

    P Pyschedelic  ,  uh, not into planning, kind of free form vs.
    structured
    
    Funny it's mentioned in here, one of our engineers (I get along with
    exceedingly well) mentioned it yesterday, and he was an INTP.
    
    Yes Fog, it can be used negatively, but it was tremendously helpful in
    my own self-awareness process to find out what my inclinations are by
    nature, so as to be able to understand better why and how I react to
    certain situations the way I do.  And, what my work environment should
    be like in order to be successful and happy, as well as who I work well
    with.

"score" was.  If there is an on-line version, I'd love to check it out.

    I took the Myers Briggs twice, 3 years apart.  The first time I was
    INTJ and the second time I was INFP.  do you suppose that means I 
    have a split personality.  I guess both my personalities are
    introverted and  intuitive.

Have you tape traders ever noticed that some of your tapes are *always* in
demand, while nobody seems to be interested in other tapes, some of which
may be better in all regards?

Obviously, several factors go into this.  For one, there is the
reputation of the show or period.  I, for example, would rather trade for
x/x/77 than x/x/76, all other things being equal.  Similarly, more people
know about 7/13/84 than 9/11/83, though in my opinion, the latter is a
far superior show.

Another issue is rarity.  People aren't as likely to ask you for a tape
that was treed just a few months ago.  And then there are shows like 3/1/69
that most everyone already has a copy of - if anyone needs to get it,
they are as likely to ask someone else for it as they are to ask you.

Finally, there is relative sound quality.  If a B+ copy of a show is generally
available and you have an A+ copy, everyone's going to strike at the
opportunity to get a dub of yours.  Conversely, if there are A's all around
and you have a B tape, virtually no one will be trading with you for it.

Given all this, I have tried to compile an ad hoc list of my 10 most
demanded tapes of 1992 (not counting pre-arranged trades via trees).
This should not be construed as a 10 favorites list, although there would
be substantial intersection between the two.

By the way, it does change from year to year; 7/13/89 for example has
fallen out of favor with my trading partners.  This is all unofficial -
I didn't keep count or anything.  It should be noted that all of these
tapes came to me from Netheads past and present.  And many more of you
have received these one or more generations down the road (FB).  So
without any further ado:

Ever wonder how rich Sir William-O was? I did, so I asked a friend in 
England, but she couldn't tell me what Peggy-o's mother did think...

   The UK went decimal in June 1970. Before that date, a pound was divided
   into 20 shillings, and a shilling was divided into 12 pennies or pence.
   A guinea was an informal unit of currency, worth (I think) 1 pound and
   1 shilling. (I think that hundreds of years ago there were guinea  coins,
   which could "clink"!). The two shilling piece was known as a florin
   and a two shilling and sixpence piece was known as "half a crown". Spot
   the echoes of obsolete currency units still used in western and central
   Europe - for example Dutch guilders are also called florins, and the
   Scandinavian countries use crowns ("kroner".)
   
   After decimalisation, a pound was worth 100 new pence, now called "pee"
   by most people. We have 5p pieces (like old shillings), 10p pieces (like
   old florins) and 50p pieces (like old 10 bob notes). There I go - a bob
   was a colloquial name for a shilling, and is dying out now. A quid is
   a colloquial name for a pound - but *never put an s on the end* unless
   you want to crack up a native audience. So, one might say "lend us 10
   quid" but never "I need a few more quids to pay this bill". SImilary, the
   plural of bob is bob.
   
   We have banknotes for 5 pounds, 10 pounds and higher denominations, but
   pounds are mostly coins. By mute civil disobedience, Scotland refused to
    accept pound coins, so pound notes are still in circulation there. They
   are accepted in England, but are not reccirculated by English banks. 
   
   In the horse world, racing bloodstock actions are still conducted 
   in guineas. 
   
   Confused? If not, I must have missed something out :-)

    Ya also have to be careful of the 'old' vs. 'new' notes.  I got slipped
    an old 5 squid ;-) note as change ... I had to go to a bank to exchange

   I actually have a least one of each of these coins. The old piece I have
  is a "pennie" from 1856 I believe could off +/- a few years.

    When they eliminated the one pound note and changed to one pound coins,
  it became a real pain. At least I think it is. Of course i don't have live
 with I just visit. It really increases the amount change in ones pocket.

  Scotland also has it's plates for notes. I have to dig out what i have a home
 to see tha difference really can't remember at the moment. It might just
 be colour and pictures. The thing i like about money in GB is that the
 paper denominations get large as the value increase's, that way it would
 be harder to mistaken give a twenty when all you need to give is a ten.

    Yup, a guinea was 21 shillings. It was not uncommon for less than
    scrupulous vendors in Oz to adertise the price of something in guineas,
    hoping most people would read it as pounds (the cultural equivalent of
    pricing something at $9.99 instead of $10, I guess). There was a guinea
    coin, originally gold I think.
    
    A 5/- coin was a crown, hence the 2/6 half-crown. We also had 6d (6
    pennies), 3d (thruppence), 1d, 1/2d (ha'penny) and 1/4d (farthing)
    coins. The penny was huge and the farthing very small, which is where
    the term "penny-farthing" for those old bicycles with a huge front
    wheel came from.
    
    We had a 10/- note which became a dollar when Australia switched to
    decimal currency (14th Feb 1966, boy is that date burned into my
    brain). The pound note became a $2 bill.
    
    The term "quid" is somehow derived from latin (quid pro quo?), and if
    you can't type �, the abreviation for pound is L. Shilling of course is
    S and pennies D.
    
    The abbreviation for this monetary system is LSD - you know it makes
    sense.

    some tiny tid-bit o dead trivia that I'm sure NO ONE will guess  or
    knows.....

    Her mother was tight with Ken Keasy
    and the Pranksters, although I don't remember her (the mom's) name and 
    she's not mentioned in any of the books by Hank or in T. Wolfes 
    Electric Acid Kool-Aid Test, so this isn't a hint......

    I couldn't quite believe it either...but whos to say
    that just because you were raised in a loving caring environment like
    Keasy and the Pranksters MUST have provided (NOT!!<<---maybe???) that
    you'd turn out loving and caring. Love was apparently sorta abandoned
    when a child, I'm sure that didn't help with her growth and
    development. Maybe for all the "good" the pranksters et al did for us,
    there was some bad??? (we all know this already...there's a fine line
    ya gotta watch)

    Courtney Love was Kurt Cobain's (of Nirvana) wife. She is the singer 
    for a band called HOLE. (wonder where they came up with that name???  %^) )
    my kids listen..
    
    Hank Harrison wrote one of the original Dead books, i think there's a
    volume II now?? Bob will know...;^)
    
    Her mother ran with the Pranksters and the "magic bus" people as Love
    called them. Mom moved to Org. whenthe Pranksters did, then apparently
    left Love in the care of the bus while she moved to other countries...
    

I just got lucky RFB and happened to read that and it caught my
eye and I've been wondering if true ever since....

Hole - I think they are a Rolling Stones "Critics Pick of the Year" this year...
maybe not top pick (maybe so?) but one of top 3 bands picked by "critics".

Hank Harrison might have managed the Dead as well; somebody ought to know
this but as usual I'm not sure....

    The Globe had a rock Trivia question a while back that may have been
    where Bob saw it, at least its where I did.  It was something like:
    On what album cover did Hole singer Courtney Love make her first 
    appearance?  The answer was Aoxomoxa.  She's one of the kids in
    the family shot in the back.  Not sure of Courtney's current
    affiliation with the Dead, but her dad, Hank Harrison, has been on 
    the outs with them for a while.  At lest that's how I remember it.

    The first time I ever saw the Boyz was at Aspen Meadows, New Mexico,
    Summer Solstice, 1967... they were the break band for the times in
    between the bus race!

    electric and people sorta forgot to run the second race)

see eye to eye, but I wasn't sure how much was confabulation (nice term
for making up memories, "Oh yeah, it happened this way, I remember now")
and how much real.  Given that as a caveat, the way I think I've heard 
it is that Harrison may be a bit too much into himself.  He wrote a 
history about the Dead, "The Book of the Dead" which apparently goes into
how Hank did this, and Hank did that, and how Hank influenced the 
dead scene, etc, oh yeah, and the Dead were there too.  Now, I haven't
read the book, so I can't say how much this is true, or how much it 
contributed to the fallings out, but that's kind of what I heard, or 
remember having heard (which may well be two different things).
Seem to remember getting this from rec.music.gdead a while back.

    I have that book...he's never mentioned as far as I can remember except
    as the author. The book is written alot like Wolff wrote parts of 
    the electric acid koolaid test, weird sentence structure, weird 
    use of puncuation, etc....just fyi...

    Well, I told you I wasn't really sure.  That was the general 
    impression I got of things, without having read the book myself.
    Maybe I'm just mixing up some memories, or it was something else.
    Anybody else know anything, or am I just running on rumor and

    I have Harrison's other book, called "The Dead", in my office
    if anyone wants to read it. Not all that well-written, you can
    tell he stole a lot of stuff from other sources, but some good
    photos.

    According to a recent interview, Courtney Love was born in 1965;
    that would make her around 4 years old at the time of the Aoxomoxoa
    photo, right?  I scanned the CD jacket for likely candidates, there's
    one or two.  Where's my vinyl copy!

    I found he talked about himself a bit as well...good book of pictures
    have a signed copy, in green marker. It's the second book he did which
    includes the first book in the first half.
