One Thing To Try by Robert Hunter
Break out your bottle, be in trouble by noon
Never get satisfaction cause ya boil too soon
Them downtown chippies know your weight to the ounce
But the harder you fall, Jack, the higher you bounce!
Stoke up your get, be ready to ride
Keep your head and your heart inside
Take it as far as you wanna go
Until we can't see the desert for the burning snow
But if you're in a hurry, I really got to go,
If you're in a hurry, might have to find out slow
That it's one thing to try, another to fly,
You get there quicker just a step at a time,
It's one thing to bark and another to bite,
The show ain't over til ya pack up at night.
Ah well, ninety-nine people all running around
Not one in a hundred got his feet on the ground,
In fact one in a thousand holding some in reserve
For when the real, true action comes around the curve.
Take care of your people, get some of them fed
Hide the ones in trouble out under your bed
Keep an eye to the future, an ear to the past
Cause after thinkin' it over, know there's nothing much lasts.
So if you're in a hurry, I really go to go,
If you're in a hurry, might have to find out slow
That it's one thing to try, another to fly,
You get there quicker just a step at a time,
It's one thing to bark quite another to bite,
Ain't none of it over til ya pack up at night.
Don't ever let it get the best of you
Plan what you can, let the rest shine through
Just so many angles you can possibly see
Got to figure on those let the other ones be
Don't be a collector of more than you need
Got a lotta things growing but keep watching your seeds
Got to SPROUT in December what you planted in May
If the harvest is empty, find some other good way
But if you're in a hurry, I really go to go,
If you're in a hurry, might have to find out slow
That it's one thing to try, another to fly,
You get there quicker just a step at a time,
It's one thing to bark quite another to bite,
And none of it's over til ya pack up at night.

Wow! What a great way to come in on a Monday morning! Thanks for the
good wishes everyone, and thanks for posting some appropo lyrics Fog
and Tim. I'll be sure to extract these replies and bring them home to
Stace.
This'll be yet another of those life experiences that you hear a lot
about in anticipation of doing it yourself, but until you actually do
it, there's no way to abstract meaning of any relevant significance
from the words of others.
It's interesting, even though it's early, my mind has already deeply
tread through some of the untouched space that sits in the corner of
the mind awaiting one's child bearing experience... The first thing
I've pondered:
Most of the things one "does" in life, they have full control over.
This is not the case in having a child. The creation of life is
something that I can affect, but when it comes down to it, I have to
accept what will be... I can start to see why people fundamentally
change (not just in their routines) when having children.
Life is a pattern... cycles, birth to death, death feeding birth and
on and on. In this universal pattern, the human being is nothing more
than a blip of infinitescimal probability (I don't really want to
address the religious aspect of our existence, just the fact that we
do exist), and within that blip, you and I are happenstance creations,
beings that grew from our parent's togetherness (or lack thereof).
Now, I have made an effort to make this pattern continue THROUGH me,
with good fortune, the fractal geometry of life itself does not stop
here!
Thanks for indulging me...

this is so true Tree...when you think your not ready for a kid to
become part of your life, think back to your 1st day of school (1st
grade) that was a big change in your life and you got through it
alright or so it seems :')....I can only say this "Hell if I can do it
anyone can !" thats about the only advice I can give to a soon to be
Daddy....its very cool watching the kid grow learn and understand new
things....and what is most cool is how much you will grow learn and
understand new things too :')
take what everyone tells you about babies and all the fun stuff that
comes with having one living in your house and forget it ! kids don't
come with a manual.....you have had it all along, its your heart...it
will tell you how to raise the little one.....

the little sapling due? JC (? I think) asking a few notes back
reminded me that we didn't tell our family (or was it just my family :)
about our 2nd one until about 1/2 way through the pregnancy. It
started out that we just didn't want to draw any attention away from
our sister-in-law who was expecting her first, and then we just fell
into the habit of not telling. I think we sprung it on my folks
a bit earlier, but the rest of brothers (4 and no sisters, my
folks kept trying to no avail ;-) found out at bro #2's surprise
40th birthday party. Surprise, and surprise!
Best of Luck,

| Congrats to Glenn and Scott too. Heard on the radio the other day
someone calling in to wonder if there's going to be a baby boom
in central MA. in about nine months :-) Kids are wonderful. But
everyone reaches their limits sometimes. Like last night when Dan
was screaming his head off everytime we put him back in his crib.
He goes down for the night in it fine, but when he wakes up at
2 or 3 or 4, he just wants to get in bed with mom and dad. Guess
we'll try to Ferberize him after the holidays :-) Of course he's
been coming off colds and possibly antibiotics related diarrhea,
so we're trying to be tolerant. Tempers do work a little short
sometimes when nobodies getting a good nights sleep. Actually the
kids get good sleep, but the adults have been suffering. Don't
worry though, we don't take it out on the kids.
Another thought for the soon to be dads and re-dads. One thing I
like about being a father of a new-born (and not so new ;-) is that
you get to act like a complete idiot, and everyone thinks it's
wonderful!
