    well, Rockingham North Carolina for a 2 day rock-fest in 1971 comes to
    mind...about 15 bands, everyone from Fleetwood Mac to Alice Cooper,
    didn't sleep or eat much for 4 days, first major road trip concert for
    the kid...
    
    Then a memory of Jethro Tull in 1971 in Charleston South Carolina 
    creeps in from the fog....what ashow! the Thick as a Brick Tour
    
    Genisis for space and time distortion twice in the late 70's
    
    
    Feat/Buffet in 1990 at Fiddlers green in Deenver for dancin till ya drop...
    
    
    
    But AHHHHHH, Telluride  %^)
    
    

    
       definatly the '88 oxford plains run. being a resident of that
    "city" for the weekend was the ultimate, too bad a scene of that
    magnitude will probally never happen again. 
       second place goes to the mighty mighty bosstones at club babyhead
    a few months ago. major league slam dancing and nonstop crowd surfing,
    what a scene, i never had so much fun. the band sucked but the crowd
    made the whole scene. as soon as the music started i was seperated
    from my friends, swept away in a current of peolpe. hey, what can i
    say, i have a very diverse taste in music and an open mind.

 Hmmm...this is a tough one for me, partially because I've seen so many more
 musical acts in the last year that I  had never seen before and to me each of
 them was a favorite for various reasons..

	10/20/83 Worcester, the first dead Centrum show. 

	I had seen the dead January '79 for the first time in Providence,
	at least that's what my oldest ticket stub says, but things
	changed when Mindy and I saw the band in Worcester that night.
	This show really did it for us, surpassing even the 4/17/82
	Hartford show we were at with Phil's earthquake space.  That was
	great, but it must've been the "roses" in Worcester *-)  We were
	catapulted into live deaddom in a big way.  Synchronicity with the 
	band, with each other, with the audience, with *everything*, it all
	hit that night, as in "I can never ever get enough of this!!!!".

	Ahhh, thanks for rekindling that memory!

    My absolute FAVORITE show had to be SRV and Joe Cocker at the
    Manchester Memorial Auditorium (and outdoor venue which "seats"
    maybe 3,000 tops).  July XX 1990.
    
    The finale was intense, with both Stevie and Joe jammin' together.
    I was twirling, dancing, prancing.  Caught up in the fire.
    
    Some incredible notion made me buy 2 tickets two days before the
    show (there were only 5 tickets left when I called the place).  
    One month later Stevie died.

    I took a look back into my vast list of reviews and this show was my
    1st front row seat show (for the Dead)....April 9th 1988, the last
    Worcester show.....and now in the words of Wayne and Garth...dodododo
    dododododo dodododo dodododo
    
    
	Well I'm back down to earth now. I had a great time Saturday night
saw a lot of friends in my travels too. Now for the review from the front
row, Very quite down front in the 1st set (no one pushing for space).
The 2nd set people came from everywhere......but I didn't lose my section
of the stage wall.

It was not as loud as I would of thought it would be but loud enough.... 
I noticed a few things I didn't seem to see before from far away like
these guys seem to joke with each other all night. Jerry and Brent were trying
to screw up Phil when they were do back-ground vocals which Phil gave up
because Jerry and Brent made him start laughing. Watching Jerry play was a big
treat all I can say is WOW ! Jerry's voice sounded a bit better too from Friday
nights strains. Bobby was great to see up close and he did a lot of SCREAMING
for me. Phil was having a bit of fun with us, at the beginning of the 2nd set
we were shouting to Phil to turn his volume up because we couldn't hear it,
so he did turn it up, with a little smirk on his face, to our delight !
I couldn't see Bill to well (a cymbal was in the way) but Mickey was visible
most of the time, Drumzzzz shooooook me to the bone, I even had to check and
see if the roof was still on the Centrum, I could feel my hair move.....
Brent is such a quite guy until he gets to sing and then he pours his heart
out with his voice and keys.

	Somehow I feel like I went to see a band I've never seen before,
Maybe because I never really watch them play. I sometimes caught myself
watching them in a daze (not moving just watching) then I would look around
me and see 13000 people dance up a storm. What a strange feeling......

	Now whos got a tape of Saturday night ?

	Favorite show ever?  There are many favorites but one in 
	particular was June Tabor & The Oyster Band at Nightstage in
	February 91.  Incredible show.  I'd love to have a tape.

	Favorite Dead? Probably 15 Jul 88 at the Greek Theater.

	Garcia Band?  Hmmm...  25 Jul 80 was rather memorable but the
	synapses were rather altered in their functionality.  The 
	9 Sep 90 show at Worcester was excellent.

			Ringo , He's the Greatest !

	How do I start to tell you all about the Ringo Starr and his All 
Starr-band concert last night at the Greatwoods Arts Center. hum ???

	Oh yes, try to imagine having some friends over on a warm summer night.
You put on some music that makes you feel like you wanna sing a long, you laugh
and smile and laugh some more ! Well thats what it was like for me but with
a bit more then a few friends ,say about 12,500 of them !! 
	Just sitting outside on the front of my car I notice the wide range in 
ages, from little babies to a pair grey haired ladies who had to be in their 
late 60s ! Deadheads were very noticeable, and so were Yuppies ! 
	The Nazi beer taken morons were out too, they asked me to empty my 
open beer so I say sure, and I did, right down my throat ! which by the way he 
didn't find too funny (wonder why ?) this was the only bummer of the night !
	The show started off with a bang and kept on rolling right up to the
end. The first thing I noticed was that the crowd was just as much a part of
the band as were the great line-up that was on the stage !
	The highlights for me were ....
1st) the first solo by Nils Lofgren, as the crowd settled back into their seats 
there was this girl in the front row that jumped out of her's to the opening 
notes of "Shine Silently" and danced her shoes off to the delights of Nils, who 
in return played the ending solo part (it seemed) right to her. He was within 
arms reach of her....
2nd) Dr. John's Iko Iko complete with a big feathered hat ! and a nice little 
dance down the front of the stage ! what a hoot !
3rd) "Yellow Submarine" just pure fun ! what a sing a-long song this is and with
Ringo who seemed to conduct the crowd through the verses , what a smile maker
this was :')))))))))))))))
4th) "Raining in My Heart" with Rick Danko on 6 string acoustic, Nils on 
accordion and the Doctor on bass. just wonderful !
5th) the NO NO song , which must mean more to Ringo now more then ever.
6th) this little girl no older then mine who turned to me ,with a big smile,
and happy said "this is my first concert !" to which I replied "I wish it were
mine too !" her Dad got a big chuckle out of that !
	Gee if I could remember the whole set list I'd say all of them !
every song had its moments, just I don't have time to tell them all !

Any one of the several shows I've been to where the lead guitarist was peaking 
on a heroin rush...

The Doors:Spring, 1969; Philadelphia Spectrum;
	- my first concert ever, just after Morrison was busted in
		Miami for that scene in the movie...indecent exposure

The Dead: Summer, 1974; Miami Jai Alai Fronton
	- the Wall of Sound; Seastones during the intermission; an
		overall incredible time, including an interesting tour
		of Miami...

David Bromberg: Summer, 1990; Old Vienna Kaffeehaus, Westboro Ma.
	- after being a fan for nearly 20 years, I got to meet him in
		a small, intimate venue....grate time

Crosby, Stills and Nash: Summer,1990, TBPAC, Tampa.
	- Front row seats, backstage passes, etc...
	- Met each of them, and their families, even walked out to the
		limo with them after the show...after more than 20 years
		as a fan...an amazing time...

Jethro Tull--December 1970 @ St. Lawrence University, Canton, NY

Ian Anderson put on one of the wildest shows I've ever seen. They
played in the hockey arena and someone had the brilliant idea of
setting the stage up in the middle of the ice, figuring that everyone
would stay in their seats for the show--WRONG! By the third song,
most of the crowd had jumped onto the ice and sat or stood for the
rest of the show. The hockey team was less than thrilled. They had
a game the next night but had to cancel. There were hundreds of little 
bumps left in  the ice from where people had been sitting that ruined
the level playing surface.

Page left and formed Led Zep.

The band had been on the Ed Sullivan Show promoting Crown of Creation
a week before they played here. It was a thrill to see them in their 
prime, complete with light show, and then get to meet them backstage 
courtesy of a family friend that had booked the show. Looking back, 
they were a very spaced group of people.

The monsoon show with the best Wharf Rat>Sugar Magnolia ever. The
lightning kept knocking the power out and it just made Phil play 
louder and better than I've ever heard since. Bob did his Aborigine 
rap near the end and just didn't want to end this one. Wading through
knee deep water to get back to the car was a first too!

to the term lost weekend:-)

The Cramps--1982 9:30 Club Washington, DC

My first encounter with slam dancing and it was one of the best nights
I ever had in a night club. It took a little getting used to, 
especially the part where after slamming into you people would excuse 
themselves and slam into someone else! The Cramps still put on one of 
the strangest yet funniest shows around.

U2--1983 Ontario Theater, Washington, DC

The best non-Dead show I saw in the 1980s. They walked onstage and 
launched into "I Will Follow" and blew the roof off the place. After 
the show my roommate at the time said we had seen them play on
their last theater/club tour. He was right.

    from that show for days.

    Incredible Sunset, excellent road trip, after that show I knew

        of Boston occured.  They finished the song on backup power but had

     Wow, how could I forget that show?  That rates up there near or at the 
     top o' the list.  From start to finish the man was incredible.



     Another favorite of mine was a show I saw with Albert King, BB King, and
     I believe Buddy Guy in or around ninteen hundred and seventy two..they
     played 3 nights and I saw 2...Albert King was the best I'd ever seen him
     both nights.

    watching Eddie play for 2 hours was down right cool ! they have a rill
    fun roadcrew too, they like to throw stuff at the band while they
    played :') (stuff like pics to water ballons) must break up the
    boredom of the road I guess....

    Yukka.  Poo.  I guess disliking that show had to do with
    disliking the people I was with.
    
    Sammy did have a fun time swinging from the scaffolding
    by his knees!

    As for the Dead...
    
    Lewiston '80 was a favorite of mine for a long time. *Any* show at
    the Springfield civic center (still can't believe they ever squeezed
    the Wall O'sound in there!), Zenith Theatre in Paris, Silver Stadium 
    in Rochester, Pittsburgh '89 shows. Too many to call, actually.

I forgot one, probobly tops the other two I listed.

Marshall Tucker Band, baseball field at Assabet Voc High School, Marlboro, MA, 
fall 1981 or maybe spring '82 I think.  This was my first concert ever, I was 
a freshman in high school, and it was amazing.  They played some wonderful 
music that night, and it's what really got me into music outside of what I 
had been exposed to playing in an orchestra (I played clarinet and trombone 
back then).  Not to sound melodramatic, but it really did change my life.

    My opinion was swayed when I was reminded that the band and the
    show they put on wasn't all that bad, just the boring, sit_through_
    the_whole_show people I was with made it an incredible waste of

    I've been to so many concerts I can't remember them all 
    either (cept the DEAD ones!) and they all rate as my
    favorites!!!  I have a hard time categorizing the dead showz
    I've been to cause each of them are favorites in a certain
    way....  state of mind, company, the music, the funnyisms,
    etc etc etc....  
    
    The past year has definately been my favorite year for 
    shows....  and I suppose Albany rates up there at the top
    for this year....  and Giants Stadium this year - although
    not the best show I've seen, being in the front row is a
    standout memory in my mind....
    
    My favorite non dead is Rolling Stones at Sullivan Stadium...
    Steel Wheels.

        pink floyd at sullivan stadium. went the first night i believe
     when it rained all day but stopped right before the show and there
     was a full moon and the clouds were racing through the sky. perfect
     floyd weather, really set the mood. was on the floor about twenty
     rows back, and i swear everytime david gilmore kicked in with his
     guitar the wind picked up (i still think they had wind machines
     and were messing with people's minds ;^) ).
    
        black crowes at the channel club two years ago, front row. very
     loud though, my ears were still ringing two days later. i doubt
     you'll ever see these guys in a club again.

    	I can't call favorites well, there's just too much information to
    find and process. But, First one that pops into my mind is the Lewiston
    '80 show, it's certainly my favorite tape of a show I've been to. Not
    just my first Dead show, but my first "Concert" ever. There was a lot
    of music playing from like 11:00 AM to ,,, I don't know it was late. At 
    least two other bands played (Who were the other acts?) and I seem to 
    remember another band or so that wasn't annouced playing. I didn't know 
    if it was really a killer show or just a case of never having been to a 
    concert? 
    	It's the only show I have on tape that needs a third tape to contain 
    the entire show. Yup, that's a great show!
    	
    	Other than that Oxford '88 was pretty equally amazing, but I had a
    little better idea of what was going on now. RFK '86 was a great road
    trip. 
    
    Re: Who was that at Assabett? Was it the Outlaws or Marshal Tucker or
    something like that? 
    	I don't really remember the musical act as blowing
    me away, but it was at my High school.  I thought it was just after
    I finished in '82. When I read that I was trying to remember if I
    jumped the fence, distinctly remembering wantching Russ go for it. But, 
    I probably didn't, I think I remember security getting lax later in the
    afternoon.

    Other Favorite shows include the Allman Bros. a few years back when
    they re-united, EC in 1980 in Providence, the Who's first farewell
    tour at Shea Stadium, the Kinks in Prov. when they were recording
    "One for the road".....Basically you could say I've seen many, many
    good shows....

    Fave concerts:
    
    The Who at the Centrum in '82 - won good seats from the now-defunct
    WCOZ (94.5) in Boston.   Got my first speeding ticket on the way home
    that night - $25 for 55 in a 30 zone (and, we were pretty well wasted).
    
    The Dead at Albany, '90, Sat night.  The good Uncle Sydney blessed me
    and man did that show and my mind take off into the stratosphere. 
    Didn't (couldn't) get to sleep that night until 6am the next morning...
    Yowzah;  what a night of fun...
    
    Fave Bar shows:
    
    Matt "Guitar" Murphy at the Sit n Bull.  He only played there once, and
    man did he have a backup band.  Opened up the second set with a 30
    MINUTE jam that went everywhere - the band was _completely_ into it,
    sweat pouring off everyone _pounding_ the music out.  Burned the place
    down, IMO, and it wasn't jam packed.
    
    Many Ronnie shows at the Bull - most memorial were the "last days" of
    Tony Z on the Hammond B3 in April '91 (?)... Ronnie had 3 wednesdays
    left in April to play before hitting the road to Europe for a tour. 
    Each Wed was topped by a hotter show... these shows were VERY INTENSE -
    he'd start at 8:30pm, play until 10:45pm, come on again at 11:15pm or
    so and play until nearly 1am.  I think the last April '91 Ronnie show
    was played until after 1am, like, 1:20am.... amazingly HOT.  Hasn't
    been the same since Tony Z left, but, Bruce Katz is promising.
    
    
    

    yeah, tough one to call.  So I'll just start with one of the fun
    ones.  Englishtown NJ, LaborDay Weekend '77.  Still living at home on
    Long Island, having graduated in the spring, without a clue what I was 
    going to do for work after lifeguarding ended for the summer.  Piled into
    our friends car and headed towards the fields of New Joisey about 10PM.
    My little brother had gone with his friends too, and taken my dad's 
    sleeping bag (which I'd been planning to take!).  Knew I'd never run 
    into him.  We had only a vague idea of where we were going, and the 
    motto of the trip soon became "Forward, never straight!" after 
    innumerable decisions to make at road crossings.  There were some 
    hand lettered signs which helped and we finally reached the venue
    about 2AM and sat outside the ring of railroad boxcars they used to
    define the "stadium".  There were so many people already there
    that they opened the gates at 4AM!  Yahoo, finish up the beer,
    cause we can't drink it inside!  Well, they never checked our cooler
    but all the alcohol was gone anyway.  Sigh.... Rush down this wide 
    slope to get as close as we could, which still wasn't all that close,
    but we were inside the inner ring of speaker towers.  Set up our
    blanket, got adjusted, and played, dozed, etc till the music was
    going to start.  Scheduled for 2pm, Marshall Tucker, then NRPS,
    then the Dead.  While waiting for the first act, resting a bit to
    catch up on lost sleep and get ready for music ahead, I was lying on
    my back, staring at the sky, when suddenly I saw this very familiar
    sleeping bag go by!  Jumped up, and sure enough, there was my brother 
    and his crowd of friends ;-)  Partied with them for a bit but they 
    eventually moved off to greener pastures.  What else do I remeber?
    Our cooler (my parents) became a stool to help see above the crowd,
    and also a foot rest for this guy with a broken leg who sat next to
    us.  Water hoses turning the surrounding area into huge mud puddles
    with lots of people having fun.  Buying a 10 dollar tshirt to add
    (or start?) my dead collection.  Nice cyclops skull with bone and
    feather from the back of Terrapin Station.  The stage people asking 
    the crowd to open a corridor to the back so the medical people could
    take out this women who was in labor!  Oh, and the music ;-) Lots
    of fun and music.  TLEO, Missippi 1/2 Step (a personal fave)
    Peggy-O and more than I can remember...  Tucker and NRPS were great
    fun too.  I think the show started at noon instead of 2PM because 
    there were already tons of people inside.  Left very tired and
    satisfied.  Just the right medicine after an intense relationship
    ended earlier that summer.  And we headed home,  forward, never
    straight ;-)

talk 'bout inflation; that would cost you $200 today; unfortunately i'm all
too familiar with the mass speeding fines :^(

as for the show that i've enjoyed the most, it's got to be the Phish New Year's
show at the World Trade Center in Boston on 12/31/90 (Chucklehead opening); it
was such a festive atmosphere; to me it seemed less like a concert, and more
like a huge party where Phish happened to be the band that was playing; there
was so much room to dance around, and we were dancing up a storm; and i kept
running into a bunch of the same people (that i hadn't known before) wearing
really wacky costumes; maybe by mental condition had something to do with it,
but i've never come anywhere close to having as much fun at any other show

as far as Dead shows, the precise moment that i can pick of "peak" musical
enjoyment (again, this probably has more to do with mental condition that with
the music) was during the summer of 1990, at Foxboro stadium, when they closed
the first set with "One More Saturday Night"; as corny as this may sound, at

    I don't really have one favorite show, but some stand out as
    "memorable":
    
    The Moody Blues at the Centrum, October or November 1983.  My first
    big-scale concert.  I was blown away by the opening act: Stevie Ray
    Vaughan and Double Trouble (in the trio days, no keyboards).
    
    The Animals (original lineup) at E M Loew's, November '83.  One of the
    most energetic shows I've ever seen.  At the time I was amazed how
    great these aging geezers were (well, Eric Burdon was almost 45 at the
    time), and how much history was right there in front of me.  Probably
    the only British invasion band I'll see in their original lineup.
    Chas Chandler (the bass player) really impressed me - after leaving the
    Animals he because a producer and got Jimi Hendrix his first recording
    contract and introduced him to Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding.  It was
    funny to see him and Eric side by side - he's tree-size and Eric's
    maybe 5'5".
    
    Crosby Stills & Nash, Boston Common Aug. 1984.  The best seats I've
    ever had for a big concert.  I didn't realize at the time the problems
    David Crosby had, and the tour ended not long after this show.  This
    was the second stop of the tour, and they were all so perfect.  I still
    get chills listening to the tapes of some of the songs.
    
    King Crimson, Orpheum July '84.  One of the most amazing shows ever.  I
    wish I has seen them in '82 when they were probably even better, but
    this was a great show.  I missed the first 30 minutes because there was
    a Shriners parade-from-hell blocking off all access to the Orpheum, it
    was real hot and the Orpheum has no air conditioning, it must have been
    over 100 in there.  There guys were mind blowing.
    
    An of course all the Cropredy shows, but especially 1989 since it was
    my first, and Steeleye Span on the first night was great.  Maddy Prior
    still has one of the best voices.
    
    Club shows:
    Richard Thompson at the Iron Horse - any show.  The perfect place to
    see him.
    
    Pentangle at the Old Vienna.  The closest I'll ever be to a legend (3
    feet in front of Bert Jansch), and Jacqui McShee has the voice of an
    angel.  Makes me wish I could go back in time about 20 years and see
    their first lineup.
    
    As for Dead shows, I haven't seen enough for one to stand out.

    This is the never ending topic among my friends - what's your top 5
    concerts?  Of course, the top 5 never has 5 in it!!!
    
    Sometimes I mix up favorite concerts with the most memorable concerts!
    
    In the spring of 1975, I saw The Stones in MSG, last row blue seats and
    I thought I saw God in the person of Mick Jagger!
    
    In the spring of 1978, I saw Bruce Springsteen from the floor of MSG
    and I knew I saw God!
    
    Other memorable concerts were, Arlo Gutherie summer of 1970 (my first
    concert) at the Schaefer Music Festival, Central Park.
    
    Grand Funk Railroad, Shea Stadium summer of 1971 (we took the subway
    there!!!) the place was rockin' that night!
    
    Sly & the Family Stone, fall 1971, MSG great red seats (my first MSG
    concert).  I was under the very mistaken belief we'd always get seats
    like those!
    
    Benefit Concert for George McGovern, fall 1972, MSG with Elaine May &
    Mike Nichols, and a reunion of Simon & Garfunkel.
    
    Numerous Jefferson Starship free concerts in Central Park during the
    mid-70's.
    
    The Band at the Capitol Theatre, Passic, NJ, 1983
    
    Meatloaf, the Capitol Theatre, 1978 (12th row center) amazing!
    
    Marshall Tucker, Beacon Theatre, 1977
    
    and of course, SPINAL TAP!!!!!!!!!!!1
    
    Favorite Dead shows:
    
    Roosevelt Stadium, Aug 1974 (the rain delayed show) Wall of Sound,
    fireworks, my first Dead show, making my way to the front of the stage.
    
    Philly, Spring 1977
    
    Foxboro - Dylan & the Dead
    
    1st Albany show
    
    Giants Stadium (during the downpour) great Shakedown Street!

    a few of mine...
    
     Dead at Saratoga 6-18-83....this show blew me away, bought a field
    ticket for 8 bucks, really hot weather changed to lightning during
    2nd set, dosed hard and danced hard nonstop, it was like the music
    was controlling my body :-)  
    
     JGB at E.M.Loews Worcester...1982  my first ones, he did two the
    same night....snuck in to both, a bunch of us worcesterites used
    to sneak into just about every show there....
    
     JGB at Club Casino, Hampton Beach...1984 ?  great seeing him at a
    club...
    
     Radiators at The Windjammer, Misquamicut Beach, R.I. 1989
    great club, summer, on the beach, danced like a madman.
    
    Stones at Sullivan Stadium 1989....20th row on the field, couldn't
    believe I was actually there, great show.
    
    The Who at Shea Stadium 10/12-13/82  early road trip for me & my
    friends...first time in New York...CRAAAZZZY!!!
    
    Pink Floyd at The Carrier Dome, Syracuse N.Y. 
    Roger Waters with Eric Clapton, Brenden Byrne..86?

	I was there (and Mindy) too!  5th row for I think the early
	show.  Talk about a **HOT** show!!  We were totally blown away!
	Just got tapes of the early show too, 3rd copy and better than
	the last 2, though still echoey.

	8/12+13/84.  Went to the 12th, didn't know there was a 2nd show (!)
	Met a taper taping, got some nice tapes, and started tape trading
	in a major way as a result of that connection.

    Looked up, saw Jerry was playing, pushed car into parking place,

    I was at the Club Casino show as well!!!
    
    Went with my college friend who turned me onto the Dead.....I was 20,
    he was 19.  I got a handstamp for booze, he didn't :^(  Jerry opened
    with "Cats under the Stars", the first set was good.....during set
    break, I started buying Pete and I beers at the bar overlooking the
    beach.  When the 2nd set started, we stayed in the bar :^)  :^) :^) 
    Jerry opened 2nd set with Sugaree and we sat with our feet up listening
    to the band and drinking ice cold Budweisers (pre-beer snob daze :^).
    
    First Jerry show, and one of my best times at a show!

	it was almost 20 years ago now (unbelievable!) that
	word started spreading across the airwaves about this
	weekend-long event happening in upstate NY with the Band,
	the Allman Bros and the Grateful Dead.  I was 17, still
	living at home with mom&dad, just starting in my
	relationship with Guntis (unbelievable!!), Woodstock had
	happened in upstate NY 4 years before which was 4 years too
	soon for me otherwise I would have been there too, I -loved-
	the Allman Brothers, figured Dylan (whom I also -loved- ;-)
	would show up with the Band, enjoyed going to a few Dead shows
	already, and absolutely positively -had to- talk my parents
	into letting me take off for the weekend with my boyfriend
	for this happening...I did...somehow...

	I lived near Hartford at the time - the anticipation leading
	up to actually taking off for NY built up till I was about
	to explode from excitement.  I guess it was a Friday afternoon
	we headed out, and as -soon- as we were on the highway, we saw
	people hitching to get there!  Hit a major backup going across
	the Hudson, cars came to a standstill.  It was obvious that
	most (if not all) of the cars sitting their with their engines
	turned off were headed to Watkins Glen.  We got out and strolled
	around (this is on I-84!), stretched out on the side of the
	highway for a bit, walked up and down amongst the cars where
	there was already a great feeling of comaraderie and excitement,
	and sharing of, well, everything...

	My (now)brother-in-law was going to school at Cornell, so
	we stopped into his place first.  He was working 3rd shift
	and was planning to go with us (and other friends of his), but
	after sitting around for a few hours, the adrenaline just
	pushed us out the door and we continued on without him.

	I remember how beautiful it is in the FingerLakes region -
	beautiful countryside.

	We arrived in the town of Watkins Glen in the middle of
	the night and the town was ALIVE with cars everywhere and
	hippies with sleeping bags under their arms walking towards
	the same general direction.  We parked along a suburban sidestreet,
	grabbed our gear and joined the crowd figuring they knew where
	they were going.

	The walk up the hill to the racetrack was quite a long one.
	Only pedestrian traffic was possible as the road was a continuous
	throng of people from one side to the other.  I remember
	Bozo the Clown sitting on the side of the road handing out
	watermelon...and the rest of the weekend is a blur!!!

	(not really)...I remember bits and pieces here and there!
	I remember sitting on the side of the road at one point for
	what seemed like a few hours watching the crowds passing, hoping,
	I guess, to see Guntis' brother.  I sat there a watched a continuous
	flood of people walk by me for -hours- without seeing one person
	I knew.  It was incredible.	

	When we got into the raceway (by this time there were no more
	fences around the place), the two of us moved in until we found
	a little, teeny, tiny spot where we both could sit with our
	legs pulled up against our bodies.  It was amazing just watching
	the people all around, the music was definately in the background.

	At one point (I guess it must have been during a little shower),
	I went to a water spigot to get some water while the lines were
	shorter.  Standing there (with a BIG smile on my face), I heard
	someone call my name!  It was Guntis' brother.  UnBeLievable!
	There were 500,000 people there - I never saw another person
	I knew all weekend long - and we found eachother!  His
	friends had a nice comfy area set up, so we gathered our stuff
	and joined them.  The Dead were playing, the sun was hot,
	people all around us rose off their blankets or out of their
	tents and danced, the partying was intense, laughter filled
	the air...

	I remember it started pouring, as it got dark I think.  Lots
	of people decided to leave at that point and lots more space
	became available.  Guntis had a 6-man tent (which we set up),
	a backpacking stove (which we cooked a nice hot meal on), and
	the 6 of us were able to keep relatively warm and dry as
	the rain storm raged.  I think the Allman Brothers were playing
	then and we were listening to them from inside the tent.
	Later on, when members of all the bands were jamming together,
	we came out and wandered all the way down to the stage.
	Wow!  That was really intense!

	It seemed after the music stopped, that we were in some
	sort of vagabond village.  No longer the throngs of people
	filling up every available space, but now tents set up
	here and there and campfires with huddled masses around them.

	When we woke up the next morning, what a mess.  It was pretty
	amazing to see the abandoned muddy camping gear everywhere.
	Naturally, we spent a few hours scavenging.  We found
	sleeping bags, blankets, cooking gear, coolers, clothing,
	money, little treasures wrapped in tinfoil, -and- a grocery
	cart to pile and tie all this stuff onto for the walk back
	to our car.

	On our way down the hill, we were stopped by the local authorities
	and arrested for stealing the shopping cart!  SOMEhow, we talked
	ourselves out of that one, unloaded the cart and tried to figure
	out how to get all that stuff down the hill.  Some of it we
	carried, the rest we threw on to the back of a pickup and asked
	them to toss it to the side of the road at the bottom (they did).
	I remember some very paranoid locals who got stuck in the line
	of traffic with wall-to-wall freaks walking past their car on
	all sides - they kept their windows rolled up and their eyes
	forward!  But most folks were pretty friendly.  Some had 
	garden hoses going if you wanted a drink, and when we got
	down into town, they were sitting in their front yards on
	lawn chairs watching the circus, real friendly and happy to
	talk and laugh with us.  Times have changed, haven't they :-(

    debess, yer story of Watkins Glen reminds me of the Rockingham North
    Carolina 2 day fest I entered in this note...esp. the part about the
    locals..."they" came to see "us" too. SOme of "them" became "us"..and
    with some of the freak-outs, probably vice versa too. 
    
    I left upstate New York a week before Watkins Glen for Ga.

              I have only seen 1 Dead show, but it is still my favorite
      concert!! I saw them in Pheonix this summer(on saturday). I'm 
      bummed that they are not stopping in Colorado :^(

    Hol-i-Dead Inn right by Mile High Stadium, but I'll be jobless by then,
    so who knows what's gonna happen. We may just all cram into one room!

    ...two years ago at the Silverbowl in Lost Wages...can't remember which
    night it was 8'}...Friday me thinks...thunderstorm brewing off in the
    mountains beyond the stage...the band winds it's way into a 'Box of
    Rain' and about half way through a bolt of lightning strikes in the
    distance right above Jer's head...                            
    
    It was a moment in time, frozen in a flash....
    
    			ya had to of been there
    	
    				yet again, maybe we all were....�

    I remamaber that too -- I was at the farthest point directly back from the
stage at the very top of the stadium - brain_matter_windsurfing (the wind was
really whipping up too if I remember correctly)  with Danielle 
tugging on my arm saying "let's get off these metal bleachers -- there's 
lightning around here"  :^)

    Yea...remember the boyz finishing the sequence, thinkin' bout doin'
    another when some of the stage decor banners started makin' like
    para-gliders and tearing down lighting and stuff...i was a little
    nervous at that point that someone on stage might get clobbered...but
    all worked out well...i was buzzin' so hard i waited around for an hour
    while everyone headed for the exits thinkin' fur sur the band would
    come back....

    My favorite show?  Last night's!  (well, so far..;-)

	reading through some -old- notes.  I came across this one of mine
	and this made me remember : has anyone bought the CD that The Band
	came out with this year Live from Watkins Glen?  In the liner notes,
	there's lottsa great pictures from the event AND there's a picture
	of this Bozo guy in there!!!  Guntis remembers him too...
