296.0. "DEADTRENDS AND FADS" by JUPITR::OCONNORS () Sun Sep 06 1992 05:56

This topic is to discuss "Trends or Fads" at Dead shows....

a few I've noticed over the years.

Hacky Sack.....big fad, kinda faded out
    Clove Butts....
    Pet's on tour....still gaining momentum
Guatemala bracelets....not as big as they used to be
Drum circles....seems more people are bringing drums & stuff to jam
    with

I'm sure there are others I've missed....were there any during
    the 70's

    >Has tie-die evolved from a fad into a tradition?

Well, I'm not sure what you mean by "tradition" here, but IMO it has evolved.
One reason I say this is that I live in a neighborhood with lots of kids, and
they were always out and about this summer (I live on a lake with lots of
activity). I was amazed by the number of kids I saw wearing tie-dye shirts.
Especially the girls, wearing them long (like to the knees) as sort of a beach
shirt I guess. Generally they didn't have any graphics on them, just regular
'ole tie-dye t's.

A big one these days is rainsticks. Must cost, oh, I'd guess 12 to make and
they sell for, what, $25-50 depending on their size??

They drive me crazy, I think they must have been used as torture devices at
some time...

to Dead shows, for some reason. ;^)

I've noticed a trend in pierced nostrils - can't imagine that
that piercing process would be too comfortable... can't imagine that

then died her hair jet black...she thought she was a real rebel, then I
told her "you look like any other normal, young, college deadhead..."
she didn't like that too much.....

Today I feel really up and great so I believe that the rather
loose way my children were raised has made them happy people.

My 3 children were raised Unitarian in a semi-hippy household .
My son turned into a born again christian and no matter what I
personally think about that - he is a good decent hardworking
responsible guy who is a democrat!

One daughter has become an entrenched home owner in Georgia,
building littleponds and fences and growing good stuff in her
gardens:-) She is apolitical at this writing.

The other daughter went to Rutgers for two and a half years and is
now in beginning her second September as a semi vagabond, waitressing
at resorts and skiing her brains out. She is passing thru the area
even as we speak - on her way to begin the season at Loon this
        weekend. she is a democrat.

They all chose some way to be different from their friends but not
so terribly far out from me.

worse than shedding their skin and becoming a republican, a child
could rebel and disregard all they've been taught (shown) about peace
and love and start supporting hate, fear and violence....course, some
argue that those ARE family values for republicans....

    back to "fads"

friendship (guatamalean?) braclets are still 'hip' out here at shows,
and in general with the college crowds.

    so is hack-ball and devil-sticks

i've seen more partially-shaved heads at the few shows I've
attended lately than in the past.

what is it with those big, useless buds that are burnt like incense
that stink up the parking lot and shows anyway? is that
    sh*t sage-brush er what?

pets on tour -- sorta cruel sometimes, but a lot of heads really see
that their animals are safe and sound before the show. Saw parrots,
lizards, ferret, dogs and cats (some BIG GAURD dogs at Vegas from LA
last year, noone dared reach into the camper for that hamburger, it was
held out to you!of course there's always the fool taht asks "can i pet
him?" ya right, you'll be dancin one armed at yer next show bud!)

My favorite re-occuring fad of late is MORE NAKEDNESS! %^)

I've noticed that Deadhead-like clothing has become a
fashion statement, not only at shows (of course) but
on the street as well. Cept for the DEChead T-shirt,
I'm not really into the garb, I find it impractical.
It contradicts very reason that I joined the Dead
scene;.......to rebel against societal trends and norms.
Or, was joining the Dead scene a societal trend on it's
	own......geez I'm wicked confused now :-/

Oh God, what happens if people stop wearing the garb
to shows?????? I guess thats when I start to wear the
garb.....Or maybe no clothes at all????? I like that!!!
296.24CXDOCS::BARNESWed Sep 09 1992 13:274
impractical????? I understand the "contradicts the very reason I

    rfb
296.25EBBCLU::SMITHwe were meant to be hereWed Sep 09 1992 14:4914

yeah, I guess impractical is not the correct adjective,

It's kinda like those big wooden sandals that alot
of folks have on at shows, I didn't find them to be
practical for my needs, the price of em was right
	up there too.

The DEChead t shirt is functional, it allows me to
identify fellow DECheads.....Dye's used to be really
good to help identify fellow deadheads, now a days, if
you give someone a peace sign cause they have a dye on,
the person is bound to give you some bizzare looks :-)

they are comfortable!!!!! except for that occasional loose stone that
gets trapped between yer foot and the sole. don't recommend them for

re: sandals

i tried on both teva's and birkenstock's; i thought the teva's were more
comfortable, they're cheaper, and they're meant to beat around, get wet, etc.

i think they fit me better because i have a pretty narrow foot; even though
birkenstock's come in widths, you're limited to the pre-punched holes in the
strap (quantized, if you will); yeah, you could punch your own, but that could
be a real pain to get it just right; besides, i want it at a different width
depending on what i'm wearing (i.e. socks or no socks); the teva's are real
handy because they close with a velcro strap; make it whatever width ya want

- a very happy customer of the teva contour

another couple of pennies worth on rainsticks...

i use one as a musicall instrument in one of the tunes i wrote...
the indigo girls use one on at least one of their tunes... (i think the
name of the tune is "welcome in"?? on the third album??? nomads saints
indians and other various and sundry folks???)

the rainsticks i have seen have been of two types of construction...
the most common (and what i have been told are more durable) are the
ones similar to what Marv described... they are actually not "logs"
but rather are pieces of a particular flavor of cactus... the spines
of the cactus are pushed in (sometimes other pieces of metal are
inserted as well)... inside can have a number of different fillings...
many are filled with seeds and stones and such... mine is of this
variety... it's about 3 feet long and was bought at the blue planet
on newbury st for about $40...

the other type i have seen a lot of is made from bamboo... if you saw
Mickey on the planet drum tour you saw him use one about 6 feet long...
made of bamboo it has metal pins driven through it... when turned on
end litlle ball bearings fall through the pins (like the seeds fall
through the thorns and such in the cactus ones) and bouce around like
    little pin balls...

sounds like rain when turned over... hence the name... :^)

I've heard bad stuff about clove cigarettes. Apparently some chemical
in clove smoke causes your lung to secrete some kind of acid. Your
lungs kind of eat themselves. Much worse than normal cigarettes.

Believe it if you want - the info I think was in the New England

Sounds a bit suspect to me, although who knows what else may be in them.

However, the essential oil of cloves, eugenol, does behave as a local
anaesthetic. It is still used for this purpose in dentistry. Smoking
clove cigarettes will deaden the nerves in your lungs somewhat, so if
you are damaging them you may not notice until much later. What little
I've read about clove cigs has attributed lung damage to this
    interruption of feedback.
