| Well, I'm *trying* to get my hair (on the top of my head) to grow long...
The problem is getting it to grow down, without getting that
mid-seventies-mod-squad-afro-look. I want it to get long enough to
cover the hair on the back of my neck :-|.
Now, the hair on my back...For that, I'm considering dreadlocks... :-)

| I've got hair that's a bit wavyish/curlyish in some places. It's
just...hair. :) Kinda short. I like to keep it a little short,
because it gets dry and a bit hard to comb when it starts getting
longer. And the hair on the back of my head starts getting REALLY dry
and it sticks up and it doesn't like me at ALL. :) So I keep it
relatively short when I can.

| My understanding of Dreds:
My friend Tammy had her hair cornrowed in Jamaica, she didn't take
them out for 3 months. They dreadded big time. I think you either
need some braids that are there for eons, or you can not wash/comb
it very often.
Hmm, I really don't know.
I do know that when she wanted her hair to be normal, she ended up
having to cut out all the dreds. You could not simply comb or brush
them out.

Re: Dreads
Your hair will dread if you don't comb it, but for your neighbor's sake,
please sponge it out!! ;-) Finer hair tends to dread better. My hair
dreads easily if I don't comb it everyday. One thing about getting dreads
though is, like someone mentioned, keeping in mind the fact that you would
probably have to get a crew cut if you decide not to have dreads anymore.
Something to consider at least if you're female 8-).

| I got hair and real bad cut this spring. So now its growing out
and it can get shaped better around September. It's curly and goes
blondish in the summer the more I sail. It usually reaches my shoulders
and takes a lot of time to look longer 'cause it curls up to shoulder
length for a long time. But wet, before this really bad cut, it is
normally down between my shoulder baldes, actually almost to the bottom
of them right now (I guess I'm getting over the bad cut). More than one
woman has made a remark of something like, "I'd kill for that hair" or,
"It's so unfair".
Moustache is permanet, but the beard is only a winter thing. It
really does keep your face warmer and the amount of time it takes for
ice to form on it is a good indicator of how cold it really is. The pony
tail is summer thing for the same sort of reason, but also because
between sailing and driving a pick up with a rear slider, I've always
got the wind at my back, blowing hair in my face and mouth.
Glenn, warning! Don't cut your hair in November if you like to play
outside in the winter. I had cold ears one winter and was really
surprised.
Never perm, let your hair do what it wants and it'll look the best.

comfortable and cool, in the winter I grow it a little
longer for warmth. People have said to me that I can't
be much of a Deadhead cause I have short hair....what kind
of mentality is that??? I then wip out my 34 ticket stubs

This applies for the other way too, cops will probably tend

um, err... I think January 1989. But my hair pretty much maxed out
in length about a year ago, and floats right around armpit level
(though it's curly, and looks longer when wet).
My body's pretty confused about what color it wants my hair to be,
anyway. My head hair is light brown, my arm hair is blondish, my
sideburns (and beard, when I had one) is red, and the stuff on my
chest & back is black. But then, since I was blonde haired & blue
eyed until I was 10 or so, then drifting into somewhat red-haired
& definitely green-eyed after that, what should I expect?

Wonder if that has anything to do with it? :-)

to be short. So get a cut that's designed to grow longer and you'll
only need one. Let it grow (isn't that t tune?) and then let it keep
your ears warm over the winter. Then next summer you can wear a
pony tail. Sonds like an easy solution to me.
Now that I'm here replying I have to admit. My hair does not reach
the bottom of my shoulder blades when it's wet, more like the middle.
I guess that was an optimistic, maybe with my head tilted back,
measurement. I'm really not over this bad hair cut of the spring,
these things last so longgggggg!
At least it's not like Don, who just walked by my office, who
claims to have had hair like mine once, but now it's less than 1/4 inch
all around and he says he doesn't like it.
Good morning

I can relate to this! One time, a hair butcher hacked about 6-7" off hair
off the back of my head with I only asked him to cut about 1/2" off! Man
was I bent ... took what seemed forever to grow back to any decent length....
This winter, I'm pondering on letting it _really_ get long.... deb is gonna

278.64 | Hair brained ideas | NAC::TRAMP::GRADY | Short arms, and deep pockets... | Sun Dec 06 1992 12:10 | 28 |
| I've been on the fence for a couple months about getting clipped, and
finally decided to do something about it this weekend. I've got this
curly/wavy/frizzy kind of hair that begins get really frazzled looking
as it gets longer, especially in damp weather. After a while it looks
sort of like a brown dandelion.
So, it was a choice of either brush up on my Rosanne Rosannadanna
impersonations, or get clipped. Out of respect for the late grate
comediene, I got it cut - just enough to make my hat fitt a little
better, though... I can't do a decent Rosanne with a beard anyway, and
it's too cold to shave yet...
You see, I hate haircuts. They make me take off my glasses until
they're done, and as a result, I can't see what they're up to. I can
never decide whether to tell them this, though, for fear they'll take
advantage of me. ("Ha ha! We'll see if you tip THIS time!"). So,
I sit there and wait for the surprise at the end of the session - like
Sartorial Roulette. I suppose I should be more trusting, and I know it
will grow back anyway (so far), but I have this recurring nightmare of
showing up at work with a 'temporary' reverse-mohawk, and I just can't
shake it....
;-) ;-) ;-)
Brrr. Has anybody else noticed how much colder it's getting?

years ago. My ears had never been quite so cold on a chair lift as they
were early that season. I resolved then to refrain from cutting my hair
too much later than September. I'll bet it was colder for you this
weekend than for me!

I feel the same way. You are totally vunerable in the Barber's chair,
especially if you have poor eyesight. I need a haircut pretty bad now, but have
been avoiding it like a barium emema.
Unfortunalety, just like with pee tests and "I've tripped and I can't get down"

country, its a pretty high price...

i too don't like getting chopped; foretunately, my eye sight is good so i

| I was talking to Lisa about hair on Friday night. It's the
reason I look so different now - I was in a field sales office
from '85-'91, and had to keep it REAL short, and no facial hair
either. I think of it as my 'John McLaughlin Period' ;-) (the
guitarist, not the writer). Deane has a point - it was easy to
maintain. On the other hand, there's always a non-zero probability
that someone will mistake you for Ross Perot, and ask you for
money. ;-)
20 minutes, huh? When it gets that long, you get headaches from
the sheer weight, I'd suppose...;-)
Now, don't get me wrong - I didn't shave my head or anything.
I mean, I still have to screw that size 8 hat on, 'cuz I can't
get one any bigger anywhere. Some of that is just a genetically
fat head, though. ;-)...it was just a collection of funny
ideas that I get about haircuts, and a dull Sunday afternoon,
I guess. I still have what most non-deadheads would consider
long hair - shoulder length in the back - but it's the process
that always rattles me, and only sometimes the results.
It must have been a bad experience when I was a kid that still
haunts me. I distinctly recall going to my first day of high
school with a haircut that made me feel like Howdy Doody.

customer interaction does not mean hair needs to go... speaking as one
who has plenty of interaction with some big ticket customers, it is
what is IN the head, rather than ON it that matters... treat a
customer like a customer wants to be treated and that will bring you a
win... i work with our customer integration group here a lot bringing
people thorugh the site, sitting in on meetings and giving
presentations etc... no one has ever given me a hard time about the
length of my hair... sales reps with big internatational accounts
worth many millions ask for me by name (and don't ask if i've cut my
hair)...
if i can keep my hair while i visit with generals from the pentagon,
CEO's of customer companies (and members of their boards of directors),
highly placed government o-fish-als, CEO of our own company, the
governor of MA etc, then i should think you could keep yours while you

| Sometimes appearances matter. It depends on the audience.
In 1981 I transfered from Engineering into my first field
job. The job was a 1-year consulting position at
Price-Waterhouse. I dressed up - sport coat, tie, new
shoes. When I got there, they told me that normally
if an employee doesn't come to work in a suit, they ask
them to go home and change, but they understood that I
was new, and came from Digital besides, so they'd give me
a break.
Long hair wasn't even a question - they wouldn't tolerate
it. Period. Some customers are like that, some aren't.
Racal-Milgo in Miami would go drinking at lunch. PW fired
people for that (and then drink their asses off all night).
I see no reason for engineering to dress up, though. Hell,
some of the best engineers I've worked with didn't even
bathe regularly.

I have a friend whose a consultant with them. PW employees are not even
allowed to have mustaches! Most other consulting first (e.g. Arthur
Anderson) don't allow beards (mustaches, ok). I will NOT work for
anyone who tells me to cut my hair (which isn't long at all, from
a hippie-standpoint), or shave my beard or mustache. They can ask, and
I'll tell them no. If they don't like it, they can fire me...they'd
be losing a good employee. Must be something in the genes. My dad
was a stock broker. He refused to wear a tie. (blasphemy in the world
of big $$$). Back in the mid-70's, everyone wore 3-piece suits and
ties. My dad would wear slacks and a shirt, and sometimes a sport coat.
Never, ever a tie. Every week, one of the partners of the firm he
worked for at the time would come into his office and have the same
conversation with him:
Partner: You know, Ed, you really should wear a tie.
Dad: I don't like to wear ties.
P: I know *your* clients don't care, but other brokers' clients also
come in the office...
Dad: You have a choice, you can have a tie, or you can have me. Take
your pick.
P (leaving office, grumbling): &$*8#&$^1Weiss*#(@_@!tie(#&^@%#
BTW, Dad was a very good stock broker. Made lots o' $$$ for the firm.
I've got the same attitude: You want someone clean-shaven or you want
someone who does the work I do. My job will NOT dictate my lifestyle.
Sorry. Life is more important than work...
Of course, *I* can't figure out how to make money on stocks... :-(

Best thing I did over 20 years ago was to grow a beard, the money I
saved on shaving and razors, must have been at least a case of beer by
now.....
Saves on soap and water, (only have to wash half your face)
This saves on time when your running late, and usually you can find a
snack hiding in there for times when hunger over takes you.....
Yep a beard is the second best thing you can put on your face!!!!

speaking of hair - I have a "Jerry memorial" in my hair.
a couple weeks after Jerry died, when I was up at Bread and Puppet,
one morning I sat next to the campfire and, while a didgeridoo
was played into me from the other side of the fire, my daughter
did a hair wrap...it was a gift and I decided to leave it in as
a permanent living memorial. well...over the months, this has
developed into a serious dreadlock on top ;-), but I'm sticking
with my decision to leave it in. (I barrette my hair back to

| Do men always want women to have long hair? I think so.
I say short hair is low maintenance and easy to care for. 10 or so
years ago I had long hair and it was nothing but a hassle. I had long
hair since the last time my father (USMC 33 years) quit dragging me
kicking and screaming down for the ole' "25cent on the base and
up to regulation blah blah blah for Marines haircut".
After 10 or so years of that I couldn't stand it any longer and cut it.
This notion of long_hair=cool_people is a bit dated in the 90's.

I got a late Xmas present from a real crazy deadhead we are good

He's a lousy photographer, just borrowed a camera on a whim when he
managed to scam 2nd row seats. He took about 30 shots, of which 3 or 4
turned out at all. Well, the one he blew up for me is just an upper
torso shot of Jerry, his head is down so all you can see is the light
from behind illuminating his hair and glasses frame..that's it, not
much of a face in the pic. But it is a real cool pic......

| Right after my divorce in 1991, I grew a beard and let my
hair grow long. I had always wanted to try to grow a beard,
and at age 36 I finally had a chance. Considering I was
still working for Sales in a district field office, this
didn't go over well. By 1992 I had moved back to central
engineeing in New England and it was reaching pony-tail
length...and I was starting to get a lot of Jerry Garcia
look-alike jokes. After awhile, it got old, though -- too
much effort and it looked pretty scruffy, although some of
that may have been simple social survival: I was single once
again and somehow fat, grey and scruffy wasn't going over
very big...;-)
Nowadays, I'm pretty clean-cut looking. Keeps them
guessing... But it's just a lot less effort to keep up
with. I ran into Bruce LaRue (sp?) last weekend, and he
didn't recognize me. This usually happens to anyone whom I
haven't seen in a year or more, cuz I tend to change my
general appearance, just for grins, every once in awhile.
Like I said, keeps 'em guessing...;-)

| da ve,
kombucha is a yeast culture commonly refered to as a mushroom.
kombucha tea is a fermented beverage made from tea, sugar and the
kombucha (or manchurian) mushroom. basically, you brew a gallon
of tea, add brown sugar, and float the mushroom in it for 10-14
days. Then you take out the mushroom (of which there now will be
two) and strain the liquid to drink on a daily basis. It's a
"health promoting" beverage.

tim,
it's bruce laru.
and the second time i met you i had no idea who you were. cuz the
first time i met you, you had a beard and bushy hair. it happens
to me a lot cuz i have a beard half the year. anyone who meets me
for the first time during the winter usually doesn't recognize my
if we meet again in the summer. ;-)

| well, a month late is better than never.
anyways, i *love* long hair on woman.
when i'm out and a woman walks by with long hair,
that's the first thing that grabs my eye. don't
know what it is, but i love it. and, i love all
the woman at crested butte 'cuz most of 'em wear
it long.
me.. my hair is pretty unruley. brush it once a
week if i'm lucky. no time. dont wanna deal, plus,
i'm married! :-) i get it cut when i cannot deal
with the pestering from deb, although lately, she's
been layin' off on that, and i get it cut when
it is so tangled and f*d up and i can't get it
straightened out!
beard will start coming off in phases april/may

Beard, mustache, long messy hair, skier tan/windburn....
People are coming in and asking odd questions like
"what happened?" and "are you okay?"
My response "I was okay til now" or "you must've not
had nearly as good a weekend as I did".

| There was a piece on one of the network magazine shows about a
neurosurgeon who had deveoped a technique to monitor pressure on
the brain, which is key to preventing permanent damage and death
from traumatic head injuries... the neurosurgeon was a quite
personable, clean-cut individual with sorta curly hair, in a
sorta-fro, about 1/3 the length of Einstein's, in the classic
poster shot. The interviewer, running out of things to say,
said, "So what's with the hair?"
I thought we had gotten beyond that!

good response to that kind of bs.

| one person told me that, but it was not unsolicited. i got
the cut, they said it looks good and as a side comment, they
thought i'd get more respect. in reality, it is probably true,
which is unforetunate. but no one here is telling me to get a cut,
which is honorable. if they told me to get a cut, that would be
a different ballgame.... so really, it is my choice.
