You need to be more specific. There are tons of scanners out there, for PC's and even a couple for VAXstations. For text only, you'll need a bitonal (black & white) scanner - the cheapest kind - but don't expect to scan in anything but text and line art - no shading or colors. On VAXstations you'll need the VAXimage product(s), which generally require Motif as well. You'll also need DCRS (Digital Character Recognition System) to translate images into text. The last version I worked with last fall only output ascii text, but a newer version is supposed to output a modifiable DDIF file. This is much better, because a lot of text examples have more complex formats than just plain ascii can handle. For example, most magazine articles have two or more vertical columns of text, which plain old ascii character recognition tends to blend into one, nonsensical line of gibberish. Imbedded pictures and drawings can get in the way of character recognition too, without a DDIF type output format. PC's have cheaper scanners and software, unless of course, you're getting it all internally, which is basically free. Our scanners are called MD400 (bitonal), MD410 (greyscale, 300DPI) and there's a new color scanner out, called a MDsomethinggreaterthan410 (450? 500? idunno). Oh, yeah. Get tons of memory. Minimum on a VAXstation is 32MB, more if you're going to do color, or even 300DPI greyscale. A PC will also require a lot of memory, but not as much as a VAXstation. Scanners use tons of memory - the finer the resolution the more memory. Have fun. I hope this helps. tim

Chris, I know what hardware and software you have available, and also happen to be the only one whose ever used the MD300 that's attached to your cluster, so contact me offline... Fog
