43.0. "Rex Foundation" by CSCMA::M_PECKAR (spinning that curious sense) Wed Jul 15 1992 12:40

This note is reserved for discussion of the REX foundation, an organization
founded, I believe by the Grateful Dead. Keyword REX added.

It's the Dead's charity - they do all sorts of cool things. One recent
project was to help finance the recording of lots of unpublished
symphonies by modern composers. Their work would most likely be
forgotten since most recording companies wouldn't take the risk.

The Rex is Rex Jackson, I believe.

43.3As well as the cultural giving...CSCMA::M_PECKARspinning that curious senseWed Jul 15 1992 12:306

The REX foundations' biggest benificiaries are bay area non-profit
organizations which help the poor, like the Haight Asbury free medical clinic.

43.4Bill Walton's on the staffSMURF::PETERTWed Jul 15 1992 14:4517
Yes, it is named after Rex Jackson. Gans went over this with Dennis
McNally in a recent GDH. It basically benifits those things that the
boyz think are worthwhile. The obscure composers note refers to
English classical/symphonic composers that recieved money unsolicited
from Rex. This was due to Phil's interest in classical composition.
Several AIDS organizations have benifitted I believe. In Boston, I
believe the Carol Stuart Dimatti Foundation was a benificiary.
I suspect the Lithuanina Olympic basketball team (as documented in
the current Sports Illustrated) was another. So they do some
widespread support, following their varied interests. One interesting
note is that it is all managed through volunteer work, with no one
collecting salaries. No overhead, so the money all goes where it's
needed. Hmmm, I wonder if we could write off ticket prices as
    charitable contributions? ;-)

43.13What is the Rex Foundation Anyway?SMURF::PETERTTue Aug 18 1992 17:0014
Seeing as how the shows are cancelled, but two of the shows were
supposed to be Rex Benefits, does anyone (Ger ;-) have an idea
if it might be possible to donate the money towards Rex, rather than
opting out for the refund? Of course I could always use the money,
but I don't mind donating to a worthy cause.
Would GDTS be able to handle this? I'm wondering if they'll cut
new checks back to us, or if they haven't yet cashed the MO's
and we'll just get those back (which might make it harder to donate
if you mixed the money order instead of separating it for the
Rex show. I did a $110 + $10 for series one, instead of
    $55 + $65)

    PeterT

43.14RAISE::GLADUTue Aug 18 1992 17:393
You can dontate money to the REX Foundation but GDTS and REX are not
one and the same. You would probably have to receive your refund first
then mail them (REX) a check (tax deductable, BTW).
43.15Rex raffle!!TERAPN::PHYLLISin the shadow of the moonTue May 11 1993 10:4471
    from David Gans:

Ten years ago, members and friends of the Grateful Dead started the Rex
Foundation, a charitable organization named in memory of Donald "Rex"
Jackson, a GD roadie who died an untimely death in 1976.

The band plays several Rex shows a year, donating the proceeds to the
foundation. Over the years Rex has helped hundreds of people and
organizations in the arts, in the environmental and cultural survival
movements, in communities and on the streets.

Some of the beneficiaries include:

Bay Area Blues Society
Bread and Roses
California Center for Wildlife
Children's Cancer Research Institute
Coalition on Homelessness
Earth Island Institute/Valley Keeper
Families Against Mandatory Minimums
Friends of the River
Haight Ashbury Free Clinic/Rock Medicine
Heart of America Bone Marrow Donor Registry
Hospice of Petaluma
Hundredth Monkey Project
Marin Center for Independent Living
National Bone Marrow Transplant Link
Native American Health Center
Oregon Trail Special Olympics
Pacifica Foundation
Prison Bible Studies
Rainforest Action Network/The Coral Forest
St. Anthony's Dining Room, San Rafael
San Francisco Food Bank
San Francisco Mime Troupe (Ralph J. Gleason Award)
Tides Foundation/Rhythm for Life Project
Washington State Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence
Wyoming Outdoor Council

As we know, there is so much more that can be done. Starting in this
tenth-anniversary year, the Rex Foundation will be developing new
fund-raising ideas that should prove to be fun and in keeping with the
spirit of the Grateful Dead.

The first event will be a raffle. The winner will receive four laminated
passes, VIP parking, four primo seats, dinner backstage, picture with band
members, and souvenirs. (Grand prize will be good for one show at Shoreline
in August, or other show of the winner's choice.) Twenty other winners will
receive signed artwork.

Tickets are $3 each and will be sold at Shoreline May 21-23 and Cal Expo May
26-28. Look for the Rex tables and some good folks in blue Rex t-shirts
selling tickets in the vending areas.

Help us help the world: buy some tickets!

since we had so many Rex questions/discussions/digressions/puns/etc

a lot of the flyer was info on the various charites that the Rex

Yeah, really good show. Phil was definitely in it and was the major spokesman
for the group on this one. Jerry and Bob had a bit of input, mostly about
explaining the Rex Foundation and other things that the band was interested
in helping out. But the main focus was towards the English composers, and
since it was Phil's interest that cause Rex funds to head that way, Phil
was the main Dead interviewee (though I thought the foreground of the
Skeleton in the first part of the show when interviewing Phil was a
bit, ah, silly?) I must say I really like Phil's taste in music, and
it certainly gives me cause to re-examine just what is going on during the
space segments of shows. I think that Healy should play some of these
composers music during set breaks. They would certainly fit in well.
My only regret is that I don't know enough music to follow what Phil
was talking about. Though I don't read music, the few glimpses they
showed of the sheet music (over the shoulder of the players/conducters)
looked rather intriguing.

>My only regret is that I don't know enough music to follow what Phil

Don't underestimate yourself. As a former conservatory student (3 semesters
anyway), the thing that has always attracted me to the Grateful Dead is the
"pure music" aspect of their performances. That is, the presentation of the
music and appreciation of it as a gestalt. Most of what he was talking about
was the imagery the music presented. Nearly everyone can get behind that.
The technical stuff about 12-tone scales and stuff is just that...technical
jargon.

>Though I don't read music, the few glimpses they
>showed of the sheet music (over the shoulder of the players/conducters)

20th century composers have found some interesting way to notate things.
Sometimes it's presented pictorially in order to suggest an improvisation, etc.

This is why I *love* Drumz>Space so much. It's about the ONLY place to hear
this kind of stuff presented in an improvisational format.

Bostons channel 44 is 17 for us here in Nashua.

Great show last night. I thought the presentation of Deadheads and the concert
scene was very positive (plus British accents make every thing sound better).

Great Stagger Lee and Estimated clips from Cal Expo (last year's Rex benefit)!
They showed almost the entire Stagger Lee, and a good part of the Estimated! I
regret that they didn't show any footage of Rex Jackson (perhaps none exists
with him in it). Jerry said he was "one of their favorites" (roadies that is).

I must admit the spacy stuff performed by the two young British guys in the
auditorium was a bit hard to handle. I couldn't listen to that stuff too long.
Too Laurie Anderson-ish.

I didn't like their stuff either ... it sounded too "chaotic" or something
for me. Nothing in it clicked for me ... I guess it depends on whose brain
is processing what's coming in.

I love Laurie Anderson's stuff, though. If you get a chance, watch her
