260.0. "The Third Decadenal Field Trip" by CSCMA::M_PECKAR (spinning that curious sense) Tue Jun 02 1992 14:15

Figgured since so many folks in here are planning on going, and the rumor note
is really getting poisoned by veneta discussions, it deserved its own note...

Once again, the _unconfirmed_ show dates are August 22nd and 23rd, the
location is the Oregon Country Fair Grounds, formerly the Olde Rennaissance
Faire grounds in Veneta, Or.

No ticket info is available yet, but there is a rumor there will only be local
sales.

FWIW, I checked with Ticketmaster here in Seattle yesterday. They
didn't know when tickets would go on sale, sort of alluding to not
being able to say anything until a hotline announcement is made. I am
assuming they will handle Seattle ticket sales (Seattle being 300 miles
from Veneta but still considered "local"). If not, then I'll be in
Oregon standing in line someplace.

Per mail with JC, I intend to get tickets for him. Who else might need
them? so I know how to handle it for other people if only-local-ticket-
sales really happens.

I just called a phone number for ticket info ... a number I got earlier
today courtesy Bob Hapgood... (503)689-6344. It's a tape by Kit(?)
Kesey, related to Ken I presume...

The "good news" according to the tape: tickets will go on sale July 6,
through all normal Grateful Dead outlets.

If you can't trust a prankster, can you trust his relatives?

260.26GUIDUK::FLOODstronger than dirtMon Jun 15 1992 18:4012
Okay, another update. A friend just tried the number I gave in -.1 He
got to talk to a real live person! who confirmed that tickets go on
sale July 6, via GD mail order, Ticketmaster and GI Joe's in Oregon and
Washington, and Hult Center ticket outlets in Portland and Eugene.

Remember this comes from Key-Z Productions so may need to be taken with
that in mind but MAYBE open MO and no-hassle local ticket sales will
mean that everyone planning on making the shows will have it happen!

More info/rumors as I get them. Or try the number yourself.

A friend dropped off the May-June edition of The Coconut Telegraph at lunch. It
has Jimmy Buffett's tour dates laisted (as of May 1) and has him playing in
Portland, OR Aug. 21 and George, WA (real town?!) on the 22nd. While he is
playing Vancouver, BC the 23rd, would be interesting to see him make a jaunt
down to the Eugene area. All those Parrotheads and Deadheads in one place would
be alot of fun, and probably enough to make Ross Perot start some sort of
para-military operation.

The giant of the area's summer musical events, probably
will be the Third Decadenal Field Trip, a two-day concert
by the Grateful Dead at the Oregon Country Fair site near Veneta.

Formed in 1965 as the Warlocks, the Grateful Dead became the
house band at Ken Kesey's Acid Tests, a series of public LSD parties
and multimedia events held before the drug had been outlawed.
This is the legendary San Francisco Bay Area rock group's third
"decadenal" visit to the rural site.

"We did one in '72, same site. We did one in '82, same site. And
now '92, and here we go," said concert promoter Kit Kesey.

The Grateful Dead concerts will be held Aug. 22 and 23. Up to
40,000 tickets will be issued each day. By comparison, the three-day
Oregon Country Faire in July draws 30,000 to 35,000 paid admissions
with its musical entertainment on 10 stages.

The Dead concerts will have a Native American theme because
the event is being held on land once used by the Chelamela branch
of the Kalapuyan tribe and because the Oregon Country Faire plans
to use the money from its lease of the land for archaeological research
there, Kesey said. He said his uncle, Pleasant Hill author Ken Kesey,
is serving as ringmaster for the event.

"I'd kind of like to have it be like an old-fashioned rendezvous
or powwow," Ken Kesey said. "I'm trying to establish it around the
Northwest Indian look and lore as much as I can."

For entertainment, Kesey said he is inviting Ed Edmo, a Native
American poet from Portland, and Anne Waldman, the Boulder,
Colo., poet who wrote "Fast Speaking Woman and Other Chants."
Kesey said he also plans to audition other acts.

"Usually at regular Dead concerts people just do a lot of
hanging around," he said. "It's my theory that once you've
got an audience, you're kind of obligated to entertain them
from the time they are there to the time they leave. So I
figure we'll start in the morning as quick as we can get
rolling and have speeches and acts and whatever seems
appropriate, and the Dead somewhere in the middle of the
day. And then in the evening I'm going to do a performance
of my little kids' story, `The Sea Lion,' and we'll just see
what also happens."

Kesey said he expects the Dead put on at least a four-hour
concert each day. "I think it's their last concert before they
kind of break up into splinter groups," he said. "They are
going to go on a long hiatus and not do any more performing.
They're worn out."

This third field trip may be billed as The Field Trip Final,
Kesey said.

I don't know, but I'm putting the emphasis on the words, "I think",
"hiatus" and prankster. It may be the final decadenal as 10 years
down the road is, well 10 years ;-)
I suspect (hope) it's all just hot air at the moment, but we should
know soon. If the rumored Fall tour is going to get going,
mail order should start withing a month or so.

Later,

"Field Trip Productions", which is organizing the veneta shows, now has its own
hotline. According to the message I just listened to at the other end of the
phone at the below number, tickets will be available after the 1st of July both
through Ticketmaster and GDTS, and both the GTDS and FT hotlines will carry
info RE: ticket ordering.

The message implies that vending is sanctioned for this event if you contact
them through this number.

source of info on this event over on rec.music.gdead.

far there is no info on price or p.o. box #. I left a

Good questions t!ng ! Maybe the mailorder will start sooner than
the 15th, but certainly not soon enough to hear back before the on sale
date. Or maybe they figure they'll be plenty of tickets to go around,
like no chance to lose out. 40,000 per show is alot of tickets for an
event that's really no where near any population centers, probably won't
sell out super fast. I'm sure it'll be GA too, so any tic is as good as

As of last night, the Field Trip Productions' hotline hadn't been updated to
indicate the newly-rumored change in ticket agencies.

Just for clarification, Fastixx is a subsidy of Fred Meyer, a Food and General

Mail order instructions

Please send your orders in a #10 sized envelope. Include the following:

Index Card:

A 3x5 index card-NOT PAPER!-, any other size will not fit in our
files and may get lost. On this 3x5 card, write in the upper
left hand corner:

Your FULL NAME
Your Address
Your Area Code and Phone Number

In the middle of the card, put your ticket request by preference

-if you want tapers tickets make sure to write TAPER
next to your request
-"ANYTHING AVAILABLE" as your last preference lets GDTS
know that you want them to make reasonable substitutions
if your request cannot be filled by the time they get to
it. Otherwise, if any part of your request cannot be
filled, none of it will.

Return Envelope:

Include a #10 sized Self Addressed, Stamped Envelope for
your tickets. PLEASE do not decorate your return envelope
with Grateful Dead art or mention of tickets, it only invites
theft. (For example: Tickets Enclosed) We do love and display
the artistic and colorful incoming order envelopes!!!

Make sure to include correct postage. Currently this is $.29 for
1-8 tix, $.52 for 9-16 tix. We recommend that you have your
tickets sent back by registered mail. Include the fee for this
in your money-order, do not add extra postage. This fee does not
include postage, you must still put a stamp on your return
envelope. The fee for this service is currently $6.25

Payment:

Include a POSTAL MONEY ORDER or an AMERICAN EXPRESS money order.
Make payable to: GRATEFUL DEAD TICKET SALES-CONCERT NAME
for the exact amount.

No other money orders will be accepted. Make sure your name and
address are on the money order. Keep your receipt!! If your
order is not filled your payment will be returned to you.

No personal checks or cash EVER!!

Other:
Please include your name, return address, and the dates and # of
tickets for each on the OUTSIDE of your order.

One order per envelope and one order per person. Each person
must fill out their own order. Duplicate orders of any kind
will cause disqualification of all involved orders.
(Which means: If we announce 3 concerts in the same city,
you may order the maximum number of tickets to all 3 concerts
in one envelope, unless we state otherwise. Mixed orders or
orders for more than one city in one envelope will not be
accepted.)

All orders will be filled on a "first come, first served"
basis by date postmark, NOT by when we receive them.

NO METERED MAIL, EXPRESS MAIL, OR FEDERAL EXPRESS ACCEPTED!!

(Express Mail and FedEx are never accepted and are a waste
of your money)

If we decide to do a random selection mail order we will
announce it on the hotline before hand. (If we receive more
mail postmarked the first day than we have tickets for,
then the mail order automatically becomes a "random selection"
mail order.)

The address to send your order to is:

Grateful Dead Ticket Sales - Name of Concert
P.O. Box C-S 8150
San Rafael, CA 94912

Always confirm it before ordering.

The mail order hotline (415) 457-8457 will give the correct
information and address to mail for tickets. Do not use any
other address or your request will not be filled!! If the
hotline instructions are different from the above, then always
follow the hotline instructions or your order may be canceled.

Is there anyone going to both veneta shows who would be willing and
able to transport my D5, batteries, blanks and cables to veneta, hand
it off to a taper god for me, then transport it back? I will arrange
for the deck to be run by said deity, you just have to bring it into
the pit early enough so that it isn't a pain for them to hook it up.
Drop it off on 8/22, pick it up on 8/23. You, of course will be free
to copy the tapes. Must be reliable.

260.66help... I need helpGUIDUK::FLOODstronger than dirtMon Jul 13 1992 12:1533
I don't believe it... I took Friday off (to go down to the Oregon
Country Fair in Veneta, of all places) and MO was announced.

So now I have a dilemma and I need some help.

I had planned to get tickets locally thru Fastixx phone order or
over-the-counter rather than MO. But after hearing about MO starting
last Friday, and calling Fastixx 10 minutes ago and talking to someone
who said they still don't know when they will be handling tickets
(actually what he said was, the shows still aren't confirmed; when I
told him about the hot-line announcement he said that was preliminary
and wasn't "real", that Fastixx was hearing that mail order wouldn't
start until the 25th... in other words, this guy knew NOTHING) I need to
re-think this. Maybe I should mail order.

Things I need input on to help me decide:

. is it too late already to MO?

. "traditionally", are most GD tickets sold thru MO or are plenty
usually available thru local outlets?

. I have never MO'd before. Not to cast any doubts but are the
instructions in .57 full and complete so that a novice won't screw
things up?

. or would it make sense to wait until Fastixx gets it together and go
with my original plan to get tickets thru them?

Thanks,

Chuck

There are 20,000 tix/show available from GDTS and 20,000/show available
thru Fastixx. I'd MO anyways, you'll get your money back if they sell
out. You may get rejected, however, since this may be a hot ticket.
It doesn't seem to be, though, and lots of people were caught off
guard by the MO announcement.
260.68I'd bet lots of people missed FridayMR4DEC::WENTZELLDon't say I didn't warn youMon Jul 13 1992 12:4033
FWIW, when I called the m.o. hotline on Friday it said outlets on-sale date is
July 25 at north west ticket outlets (did not say which company will handle
it).

RE: Chuck's questions

>. is it too late already to MO?

They said they expect to have plenty of tix to fill all orders, but didn't say
if they meant first day orders or what. I would imagine though that since it
was a Friday and basically a same-day announcement, that quite a few folks
might be in the same boat you are and it would be worth sending in your order.

>. "traditionally", are most GD tickets sold thru MO or are plenty
>usually available thru local outlets?

I believe (and may be wrong) that it's usually about half and half. But who
knows if they are handling this in the usuaul manner.

>. I have never MO'd before. Not to cast any doubts but are the
>instructions in .57 full and complete so that a novice won't screw
>things up?

They look like they are indeed complete. Check out note 15.* for other
explantions (says the same basic thing, but there may be examples as well).

>. or would it make sense to wait until Fastixx gets it together and go
>with my original plan to get tickets thru them?

Hmmm, that's going to hasve to be your call. I've never even heard of Fastixx
to know how reliable their system is...

The ticket outlet GI Joes has tix on sale today. Rae is going to go

All for now,

Isn't GI Joes one of those places that takes *your* money, holds on to
it until tix go on sale then buys them from Fastixx (or wherever) when
they go on sale, then sells them to *you* at a markup? Seems I heard
of this before from them.

No ticket outlet has them for sale that I know of, but then again, what
do I know?

Okay, I just MO'd... my first time... hope I didn't mess up... I have a
feeling that come the 25th, I'm going to be in line at Fastixx "just to
be sure"... :-)

FWIW, it was in the Portland OR papers on Friday that the day before
(Thursday), a judge ruled against an effort to block the concerts. A
group of residents and property owners in the Elmira-Veneta area had
appealed the permit issued for the concert by the Lane County
Commissioners under the Oregon State mass gathering permit process.
According to the article, it was this dismissal that once and for all
cleared the way for the concerts to take place. This explains why it
took so long for things to become clear and the official announcement
to be made.

G.I. Joes has a Fastixx outlet, and did _not_ have tickets go on sale
yesterday. Apparently, some form of media (radio or newspaper) said
otherwise Sunday night.

Gerry's speculation was not correct, either: G.I. joes is apparentlys a
reputable dealer of tickets...

What I meant was, if they were on sale at GI Joes yesterday, then they
would be selling vouchers because I know of no one who would have been
selling tickets yet.

This covers about 60 miles north/south of Eugene. I can send listings
for Portland and other faraway places if needed.

Room prices for B&B's appear to start at $45-55 and run to $75-95. For
motels and hotels, same range with some exceptions.

I don't personally vouch for these B&B's and motels except for the few
that I have stayed in. This list comes out of reputable sources,
though. Most of the larger towns (Eugene, Corvallis, Albany, Salem and
Roseburg) will have motels not listed here. I can get those listings if
none of the above are available.

I'll post camping listings later.

The Saturday Veneta tickets say "Grateful Dead and other stuff",
the Sunday tickets say only "grateful Dead" ? I guess there will be no
other stuff on Sunday. The Message with the tickets talks about a
shuttle bus from Autzen Stadium in Eugene to the fair grounds, which
is the recommended mode of transportation. Car pooling to the fair
grounds is also recommended due to the fact that there is only one road
from Eugene that will get you there. They say there will be "limited"
camping available at the show site and they also list a bunch of hotels
and campgrounds which seems to match the list already posted by Chuck a
few replies back, only not as comprehensive.

Mine was registered mail, but of course since I'm in California, it
probably takes less time. You should probably call the problem hotline
at 415-457-8034 tomorrow between 11am-5pm California time and ask them
if your order has been filled. Then, you'll know if you should get tix
on Saturday or not. BTW, last time I talked to Coz, it sounded like she
was low on cash and she's hoping to have enought cash in time for the
on sale date Saturday, but she running her own business and all, you
can never tell. If anyone feels like getting two extra tickets for
Coz on Saturday, she'd probably appreciate it (but you should probably
check with her if you were going to do that to see if she needs it ->
hate to see you get stuck with extras 8-}) Email me if you need her
number.

Back at work and reasonably well today.

Status of my tickets:

I definitely have 2 per show (extras from a friend who MO'd for
more than he needed)

I nearly-definitely have 3 more per show (my own MO, not yet arrived,
but I called the ticket problems hotline yesterday, they checked and
told me my order was filled even though I shorted them on the
registered mail fee. I assume they are lost in the registered mail
void at this time.)

So that gives me a total of 5 per show, enough to cover all who I was
working with except for 2 for Deane Smith on Sunday.

JC - will be covered by what I have

Phyllis and t!ng - mo'd and got all you need, right?

Scott - mo'd, hasn't received them yet, but we worked out a
way to figure out how to handle this

Deane - needs 2 for Sunday only

Tom Lawlor - mo'd and got them.

Since I am going down to Oregon tonite to get Deane's and maybe Scott's,
I can also get additional tickets for anyone else who still needs them.

Let me know today please. I will be at work until noon then I am
hitting the road. Email me by then or call me DTN 545-4221 and leave a
message. If I have already left I will still be checking voicemail
tonight from Oregon.

Gather around me. :-) I'll be towards the back, and real easy to spot, since
Charlie will be on my shoulders; there should be plenty of room to move around
back there too, and the music wont be so loud that we'd have to scream at each
other just to say "hi". I'll be hanging so far back for Charlie's sake, btb.

Meeting before the show will be impossible for me, since I'm coming in from the
coast via backroads, where most of you will probably be taking in the buses
from Autzen; those who are might want to ask someone whose been to Autzen for
advise on meeting places, though...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 10, 1992

Grateful Dead must unfortunately announce the cancellation of the concerts
planned for Veneta, Oregon on August 22 and 23 and Shoreline Amphitheatre,
Mountain View, California, on August 25 through 27, to give Jerry Garcia
sufficient time to recuperate from health problems brought on by a too-heavy
tour schedule. In other words, he's just plain axhausted.

We certainly expect his full recovery, probably by the time planned for
these concerts, but are unwilling to take even the mildest risk.

Tickets will be refunded at their place of sale. No make-up dates are
scheduled.

We regret the inconvenience of this change to our fans and the business
community of Eugene, but we know that they all will join us in wishing for

Decadenal Field Trip postponed because of musician's illness

(Portland Oregonian, Aug. 11)

The Third Decadenal Field Trip, featuring the Grateful Dead, will be
postponed because band leader Jerry Garcia is not well, concert
organizer Ken Kesey announced Monday.

"Apparently his doctor advised him to take three weeks rest", Kesey
said. "If it's off a few months or a few weeks, it's not going to be
that devastating."

Kesey said it might even be better to hold the gathering in rainy, cool
weather, rather than the 100 degree heat of high summer.

Kesey said they would go ahead with performances by acts hired to play
before and after the appearances by the Dead, which was scheduled Aug.
22 and Aug. 23 in Veneta.

The Field Trip is a repeat of gatherings held on the site of the Oregon
Country Fair in 1972 and 1982. The event was sold out within five hours
of tickets being offered, Kesey said.

Kesey, the author of the American literary classics, "Sometimes A Great
Notion" and "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", had been planning to hold
the party to celebrate the publication of his new novel, "Sailor Song",
at the same time. He said he might have to schedule something else.

Neighbors, worried about the estimated influx of about 40,000 fans into
the rural community, tried unsuccessfully in court to block the
concerts.

I'd like to meet someplace in the Eugene area or Portland that weekend,
so if something gets decided please let me know. Or earlier that week
if people are passing through Seattle.

In both Portland and Eugene, are places similar to the Blue Moon, called
McMenamin's. There's a chain of about 12 of them in Oregon, some being
named something other than that but all part of the same outfit.
They're brew-pubs, make their own brews particularly fruited ales (like
one called Ruby Tuesday which is a raspberry ale). Not quite the same
as the beloved Blue Moon in Seattle but close.

Meeting points midway between Portland and Seattle are another story.
Other than open road there's not much of interest gastronomically in

cancelled Third Decadenal Field Trip. It has absolutely nothing to do
with Oregon Country Fair or Field Trip Productions. This is a
community/family event. The purpose is to recoup some of the economic
losses to the community and turn an unfortunate situation into a good
time.

For additional information, call Bill Conde at 503-995-6164. I suggest
you think twice before calling him. He has less than 100 hours to get
this whole thing together.

is all the info I have. Please do not send me email regarding this.

There is absolutely no connection between myself or my employer and the
producers of this event.

phone call that said they were playing in Portland on Thursday night.
If that's true, we'll go then. If not, maybe Friday night in Eugene,
or maybe we'll miss them - depends how things go. The hotline's got
nothing about a Thursday Portland show so it just might've been a

I believe DeadRingers is the same as Kingfish. The difference is that when Tom
Constenten plays with them they are Kingfish and when ????? plays keys with
them they are DeadRingers, at least that's how Mystery explained it to me I
think (and maybe I have it backwards).

We just got back from Eugene this morning. We caught the Rads on
Friday and Saturday nights. Saturday night was our friend Lori's
birthday, so we had a cake brought up for her during the show. Reggie
said to me when he walked on stage "Boy, you sure get around!!" 8-)
Who me?? ;-) I was "on the rail" for both shows. We didn't make it
down to the "Life After Dead" thing. On Saturday, we took a drive to
the Oregon coast. It was beautiful - kind of a giant version of La
Honda. I can definitely see ourselves moving up to Oregon if there
are more jobs up there. On Sunday, we went with our friends Bob & Lori
to the Terwilliger Hot Springs about 50 miles from Eugene and soaked in
Nature's hot tubs for a few hours. We saw a sign on the way into the
Hot Springs that "some nudity will occur". Some nudity?? *Nobody* had
any clothes on. I hadn't been to any public nudist spots, but I felt
very comfortable there, so for those of you who have qualms about nudist
spots, I say take it off (but leave it off at your own discretion)! ;-)

Dead Ringers didn't play cause one of the band members lost a parent.
Don't remember who..sorry. Sounds like they would be part of what was
Gratefully Yours. When we saw that show, I think it was Kingfish, Tom
C. solo, and then Merl and the Rainforest Band.

~~~~~
Oregon was incredible!  We flew in on Thursday, and spent Thursday
night hanging out with Jerri & Roger in Portland.  Friday we checked
out Portland for a while, hooked up with Fog, Rachel, Charlie, and some
friends from New York at a VERY COOL brew pub called The Barley Mill.
Yummy "ruby" raspberry ale!!  We even bought a mason jar full to go!
Then headed down to Eugene.  Met up with other friends at our motel who
had come in from Seattle.  Jerri, Roger and I went to the Rads.. I
thought it was a great show.  Also a good opportunity to see most of
the friends from the east who had come in for the week and also some
west coast friends we don't see that often.  After this weekend
everyone pretty much had different vacation plans so it was nice to
have a group party spot for at least one night.  Saturday, Jerri &
Roger headed out to the "Life After Dead" festival but I stayed at
the hotel for a chance to party with the Seattle folks.  After a pool
party and TROUBLE championship (next time we're getting SORRY :-) we
checked out the Eugene Saturday market for a while.  Lots of freaks
around.  Saturday night we hit the festival for a while, and then went
back for the day on Sunday.  It was pretty fun, but the music was just
mediocre.  Little Women weren't scheduled until late Sunday and by then
we were heading back up to Portland.
The rest of the week was spent checking out one of the most beautiful
states I've seen.  The coast was incredible.  To get there you drive
through these beautiful, windy, mountain roads, and then all of a
sudden you round a corner and there's the ocean!  Really breathtaking.
On the east coast, almost all the land leading to the beach is flat.
And the beach itself was wonderful.  Miles of sandbars you can walk out
on and play in the surf.  We spent a day at Cannon Beach where Haystack
Rock is.  Haystack Rock is a huge rock that stands up out of the ocean
and it's a protected bird sanctuary.  It looks just like one of Monet's
haystacks! You can walk right up in the water to it and climb around on
some of the smaller rocks near it.  Lots of neat creatures live there
too - whole clumps of live starfish.. really beautiful.
Another day was spent at Silver Falls State Park.  This is a big
wilderness area about an hour or so outside of Portland in Silverton,
OR.  There's miles of hiking trails throughout the park that pass by 10
natural water falls.  We took a nice 4-5 mile hike and saw about 6
falls.  The best part was that there were hardly any people there, so
you could really just enjoy the sights and sounds of nature.  I love
listening to waterfalls.
Another great day - visiting Bagby Hot Springs.  This was the most
beautiful drive yet - more mountain roads and winding rivers.  For
about the last 15 miles or so that lead to the springs there's no signs
of civilization at all (other than the cars and road :-).  I was really
psyched to check this place out - friends from California went last
summer and raved about it - but Jerri had been hearing some
not-so-great things locally.  Seems like the place had gotten very
popular lately and there'd been some vandalism.  Also, a friend had
been there the week before and said it was more crowded than he'd ever
seen it.  Well, we decided to try anyway.  When we got there, the lot
was full of about 15 cars - we were kindof bummed.  Then we started on
the 1 1/2 mile trail that leads in to the springs.  As we're walking,
(through an intensely beautiful, old, peaceful, forest) people keep
passing us the other way, heading out.  First two, then three, then
another two... they kept on coming.  By the time we reached the
springs, there was only one couple left there out of all those cars!
Bagby is set up more like a spa - there's all these tubs carved out of
cedar logs.  Individual ones and group ones, and you can regulate the
amount of hot spring water that flows in.  There's also a well of cold
mountain water to mix in so you can get the temperature you like.
Really beautiful and very different from other hot springs I've been
to which was nice.
Spent some time on Mt. Hood - easily the most impressive mountain I've
seen.  Almost everything around it is very flat - so it looks even more
majestic!  Watched the sunset from one of the ski areas near the top
but unfortunately my camera was acting weird.  (I also caught a
beautiful sunset on one of the flights - and took pictures.  Think
they'll come out?  I was using one of those throwaway cameras that I
bought when mine quit for good at the beach so we'll see..)
The rest of the time in Oregon was spent checking out the Columbia
River Gorge and hanging out in Portland, downtown and at the rose
gardens.  I had planned to head down to Crater Lake for a couple of
days but couldn't get to it this time.  I guess I'll just have to go
back!
Friday night I flew in to Oakland and met up with a bunch of friends at
the Zero show at the Last Day Saloon in San Fran.  Then Saturday we
just hung around the Haight, went to Art Rock, stuff like that.  We
wanted to spend the day in Marin and drove out to Muir Woods and
Stinson Beach, but Muir Woods was so crowded there were no parking
spaces for a mile around the place, and then major fog rolled in and
we couldn't see anything from Mt. Tam, so we just checked out the beach
a little and went back to the city.
Flew the red eye home Saturday night.  Absolutely one of my best
vacations and a place I will definately return to.
260.207Trip report.....I think I'm moving to Oregon!!!!!!!!EBBV03::SMITHwe were meant to be hereTue Sep 01 1992 15:40100
When my friend Steve and I arrived in Portland Oregon we
hadn't the slightest idea what I was in for.
The folks at the airport were great, even the baggage was
put out quickly and kindly.  I picked up my rental car from
a smiley girl at the counter and headed south on Rt 5.
Driving down to Eugene, the countryside was rolling with
an occasional farm here and there.  When we ascended the
Cascade foothills I could clearly see why they named
these mountains such a wonderful name, the mountains
were lush and green and actually seemed to cascade into
deep valley's with rivers in them.  It seems as though
we drove upward for hours, the vegetation switched to
a sort of high country alpine forest with stunted conifers
which lined the roads for miles and miles.
Diamond Lake campground was the destination for the evening,
the cost was a mere $7 for the evening.  The ranger there
was a superior host and after reciting the rules and regulations
reminded us "most important of all, have fun!", and that we
did.  The views were stupendous and the mountains surrounded
the lake.
The next morning the sky was as clear as could be, we embarked
for Crater lake which was close by (10 miles).  Driving to
Crater Lake we passed through Pumice Desert, which had been
covered with 50' of ash from the volcano in which the Crater
has replaced.  Upon looking over the edge of the 7500' lookout
onto Crater Lake I stumbled in my footsteps because I was
dazed by how absolutely INCREDIBLE Crater Lake is.  The ridge
around the lake had a reddish brown appearance where the crater
itself was nestled an average 1500' below the ridgeline.  The
bottomless lake was such a color of blue it hurt my eyes to
look at, not to mention the hughes casted by the shallower
water along the shores.  I wanted to stay there for days
but unfortunately we only had a few hours.  An incredible place,
I would recommend it highly, so quiet.
We travelled through a very hot valley onward to Mt Shasta for
a fine evening at a KOA campground which wasn't all that great
but it was ok.  The summit of Shasta was topped off with snow
fields that draped down almost 1/2 way.
Yosemite was beautiful as well, I was amazed at how far El
Capiton loomed over the valley.  We stayed at the Crane Flat
campground which was about 15 miles from Valley, we were alerted
by the ranger there that bears have been in the campground for
a few nights now and two of them were in jeopardy of being shot.
We saw none.
The valley was nice, but much to crowded for my liking.  We
sought relief by hiking up to the top of upper falls.  It was
a very difficult, steep, hike with lots of switchbacks that
weaved back and forth around and across the steep cliffs that
surrounded.  We bathed underneath upper falls, the fall itself
was flowing, but not that strongly, made for a great shower
spot.  We were accompanied by two German couples where the
women had no problems with er...um...ah..revealing themselves
to us.  Leaving the National Forest was tough, but I didn't
miss the crowds one bit, being the non-people person oriented
that I am.
Arriving in Mountain View to stay with relatives was nice, a
real bed was a welcome site.  I was promised a NASA tour
from the people I was staying with next time I come out and
have more time.
San Francisco....I am sorry to say it but I didn't really like
it, we drove down the windiest street in the world, and then
I just wanted to get out of the city.  I guess I go on vacation
to get away from people, and this was not the place to get away.
I'll save SF for a business trip someday.
Wine country was intense, hot springs, grapes, gotta love it.
We continued to head toward Humbolt county and it was the *kind*
place...yes indeed.  I know now why they call this place the
Emrald Triangle.  The Redwoods smelled so nice and so did other
things.
Alas, the Oregon coast, the most beautiful part of my trip.
We spent Friday and Saturday checking out rocky shores,
beaches, cool water, cool air, beautiful views, and even
rented a pair of dune buggy's at Dunes City.  A remarkable
place indeed, so quiet, so nice.  I WILL live there someday,
I am convinced, that is the place for me.
Now my trip is over, back in the office.....kinda sucks, at least
I have some terrific memories to look back upon.  Oregon
has left a very desirable mark in my soul.  It is enlightening
to know that America has such a place and there is so much to
be seen.  I have determined that I will spend my vacations in
America, always, we have so much right here in our own back yards.
This land was made for you and me!
only I didn't drink that extra 20 Portland Ale's Saturday
Night, I would have been alive and well to make it to Mt Hood
to catch the 7:00 lift.
Well, when our airplane from hell flew over Mt Hood and things
got really wild from the turbulence, I lost all 20 Portland
Ale's in a record 2 minutes..... ;-)
Did you make it up there?
260.213No wonders its tough to make it in that business!CSCMA::M_PECKARWed Sep 02 1992 17:2212
Nope, I sacrificed skiing day for a return visit to the Elk Cove
Winery, a place run by heads who pour as many 6 oz tastings of their _vintaged_
wines as you want (if you get them going about keeler soundboards, that is)...
True Fact:  There's a new winery in the Willamtte Valley whose pinot is called:
"Grateful Red".
