253.0. "What IS Rock & Roll?" by LEDS::MRNGDU::YETTO (child of countless dreams) Tue May 05 1992 13:15

Inspired by a discussion going on elsewhere in this topic ...

What is Rock and Roll anyway?

To my older relatives any of that loud music I listen to is rock and roll.
I think the prerequisites in their mind is
1> it has an electric guitar
2> it isn't big band, classical or jazz

I have a more discriminating view yet it is still hard to separate all the
types of music I listen to and rock and roll. Where do the Dead fit in?
JGB? Who draws the line between Rock and Blues? And while I am at it, just
what is Rythmn and Blues? Where does Bonnie Raitt fit in? How about Merle
Saunders and the Rainforest Band? The real question is; if I were to join a
CD club and had to pick one of six categories to describe my musical interests
what would I say? What would *you* say?

I don't think there would be an appropriate answer for you to give,
Lisa...unless one of the choices was 'eclectic.' :^)

I don't like answering that (I had to fill one one when I joined
Columbia Record Club, and didn't feel like any category really suited
    me).

    But....what is "Rock & Roll?"

To me.....Rock & Roll is blues-based, but not pure blues.....kind of
like a cross between blues and pop music. I don't like to say "pop
music", but say so because I think the effect is that it appeals to a
larger, more general audience that wouldn't necessarily enjoy pure
    blues style.

When I hear the term "Rock & Roll", the first group that comes to my
    mind is the Rolling Stones.

Its a hard thing to describe, because it in itself is very eclectic and
hard to describe or define. VERY hard to really define!!!

I wouldn't call the Grateful Dead a rock band, although my above
    description would call them such.

    I dunno :^) :^) :^)

    Very interesting question Lisa

You will always have trouble categorizzing artists,.. like saying
that the grateful dead are a rock and roll band is really ignoring
their folksy side, their bluesy side, their jazzy side etc.

Its much easier to categorize other artists. For Rock and Roll, the
first two images that come to mind are Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley.
After that, The Stones sort of put the next hard edge,. and then things
went the route of "hard" rock,. then "metal",.. then "heavy metal",..
then,. I don't know,.. Nirvanna? which is like,. heavy rust! :-)

Anyway,.. things are always changing. Rock as it was first
invented/defined is pretty much dead. We see lots of offspring like the
punk movement, and the metals, etc.... but very littel pure Rock and
Roll coming out today. Black Crowes are the clo9sest current thing I
can thank of that has a rock thing to it...

To me, these are "rock and roll"

    	Chcuk Berry playing:
    		Johnny B Goode
    		Roll over Beethoven
    		Promised Land
and lots of other stuff from Chuck

Elvis Presley doing Jailhouse Rock, Bill Hailey and the comets
doing Rock aroun the clock, the dead doing Alabama Getaway, The Beatles
doing Back In the USSR,... those are rock and roll.

Rock and roll has drums,.. big loud constantly beating drums
so that its basically impossible to lose the beat:

Just let me hear some of that rock and roll music
any old time you chose it
Its got a back beat you can't lose it
any old time you use it
its gotta be Rock and roll music
if you want to dance with me

But this is one of those things you can't define in words,.. you
can just point to things and say "thats rocka dn roll" and point to
    others and say "that aint"...

As for your other questions,.. I'll let one of my distinguished
colleagues on the panel try to sort it all out for you :-) :-)

    RE .5

I don't think the statement "The Grateful Dead IS Rock-n-Roll"
can stand on its own without addendums or something like:

    	... and a whole lot more ...

    			OR

    	... but that aint all...

Branford Marsalis said it best after gigging with the boys,.. his
words were something like "These guys can even leave a space for me,...
theres a lot more to what they're doing than just rock and roll",.. or
    something like that...

I want/need to add these addendums when you think about songs
they do like,... Dark Star,... or To Lay Me Down,.. or Victim or
the Crime or ,... Friend of the Devil,.. all of which don't have a lot
in common except they defy the 'rock and roll' categorization.

    re Marv,...

Yeah,.. I've been dabbling in rock and roll for N years,.. by now
if I don't know I must be in trouble.... well,. I'm in trouble anyway
come to think of it :-0

how's about this:

anything you played that your parents couldn't understand and
anything your kids play that you can't understand and everything
that falls in between.
