    Since I already decided that I'm going to be the Drug Czar, I belive
    that i should interview any and all applicantes, so if any interested
    parties will send me a sample er resume of past experiences i will try
    er judge them equally and make a decision. 
    Of course i will have to include Jim in this process so be sure to send

 My esteemed domestic affairs advisor reminds me that in my administration
(should I choose to run) we will not waste the taxpayer's money on a
war on drugs, thus we have no need for a drug czar.  The funds expended for
this foolishness will be better spent on education and other more pressing
domestic issues.


So, Mr Smith, your resignation is cheerfully accepted :^)

Well, folks, in light of Mr Clinton's alleged troubles vis a vis his non service
in the Armed Forces, I must confess, that I too did not serve.  Yes, my defer-
ment expired in 1971, and a friend engineered a spot  for me in the National
Guard, and a week before I was to swear in the draft lottery came along and 
well, I got #322 (higher than Mr Clinton!), and said F___ the National Guard
and got out.  

So, does that mean I'm disqualified?

    I failed to even register up until i was close to 20. My dad "tricked" me
    into registering by showing up at my house and saying "wanna go to the
    post office with me?" "sure Dad." and he took me to the Selective
    Service Office IN the Post Office in Phx Az. When I realized where I
    was I looked at Dad and said "You S^& of a B^%$!" his reply..."well
    you're here , might as well." (Little did I know that  song title would
    appear in my then distant future). The lady behind the counter asked
    where I'd been when I gave my age. I said "I forgot". Got my card and
    went home, said see ya to dad,, and had a card burnin party! 
    
    My dad spent close to 30 years in the Air Force, the 60's and 70's were
    real hard on his perception of America. A couple of tours of Viet Nam
    turned him around. He did NOT want me going, but was torn between the
    love for his family and the love for his country. Thank God I never had
    to really confront that issue, for even though draft registration 
    was still active, no one was being sent over there by then. (Prob why
    they hadn't come looking for me at that time)

I registered when I turned 18, in October 1972.  The first year you were 1-H, and
when you turned 19 you got 1-A.  My lottery number was 10, if I recall correctly.
I had a student deferment until June of '74 when I dropped out (the first time),
so that would have made me 1-A, but they stopped drafting people in late '73 or
early '74.

I had decided that I was serious about consciencious objection, but went along 
with the legal requirements to register.  Instead of refusing to do the paperwork,
I looked up McGill University, and the University of Toronto, just in case. ;-)

    Personally, I started to learn French, so I could feel at home in
    Montreal, but, as happened to so many others, I got a 42 in the lottery
    (way before Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy), but Nixonx ended the

 One of the first pieces of legislation I will introduce upon my inauguration
 will be a bill to outlaw voicemail.  Once congress vetos that measure, I will
 settle for a compromise that all voicemail software be standardized so that 
 one pushes the same buttons at the same prompts for each.  And that when one
 pushes "0" or "00" when they want to speak to a human, that should the human
 not respond it is not forwarded to another phone so that one encounters some
 one else's voicemail and instructed to push "0" or "00" again...

This is actually corporate policy. Any digit whose voicemail does not give the 
caller the option of talking to a real person is in violation thereof...

I can't put my finger on the exact loacation of this policy, but it was stated 
to us clearly in voicemail training that this is an important rule. If the 
person you are refering to above is a digital employee, kindly remind them of 
the rules...

 I got the option of talking to a live person, only the live person to whom I
was supposed to speak wasn't there and I got forwarded to somebody else.  This
infraction took place a couple weeks ago and I don't remember the names, except
that it was someone in the field who had been yelling at me looking for infor-
mation and when I called him back I encountered the above.  Today I got angry
cuz I encountered a different group of instructions with different buttons to
push and when it came time to push them I forgot which ones to push :-/



Other than that, I love voicemail..

    As being a classmate of Fog's at Phoneschool U (PU)

This is true.  I was watching the show when Al was on.   Al's 44 now, which
would make him graduate college (at 22) in 1970.  I'm sure he's rolled a few
bones in his life.  I doubt Tipper would ever admit to anything like that,
being the soul of the PMRC and all.

Both Al and Tipper have "admitted" smoking pot in college.

Watch for the Bush people to make this one of the big character issues in
upcoming months.  It'll probably help to keep Clinton from being elected,
but I think it's an encourage sign that the public isn't completely 
discounting Clinton because of this, right now.  Looks like things are
getting better.

Just in case a zillion others don't post this:  Weir and Wasserman were
featured on CNN this morning (actually I caught 'em on Headline Snooze).
They showed excerpts of Victim and Eternity.  Haven't seen the boys'
perform yet, but Eternity sure sounds like a real nice blues number!
Bobby commented on how Eternity at first seemed too simple, almost
silly, before his eyes were opened and he realized the genius of Willie
Dixon's songwriting... to which Dixon replied (at the time),  "Now you
see it, see it... that's the wisdom of the blues!"

There are few things worse than a newsfeed that delivers the responses before
the originals (I know, I know, at least I get News, etc.)

In this particular case, I've seen numerous replies quoting and refuting
individual sentences in Jordan's article, and thought "Man, this guy could
ghostwrite for Goebbels, or maybe even Newt Gingrich."

Now, after getting to read the complete article, I feel much differently about
what he has said.  I don't agree with him in many cases, but I also see that
the tone and the words chosen are more conversational than legalistic.  Now,
you can argue that they are imprecise, such as equating a right with a 
priveledge.  And in a legal argument, or coming from a politician, this would
indeed be constitutional fighting-words.  But I don't think Jordan was trying
to slip us a fast one; just was a little lax.  Some replies I saw went beyond
pointing out the difference (IMO).

To extend the discussion, I feel that some uses of free speech can be labeled
abuse of free speech; the question is -- how should society or an individual
react?  Not by banning or repressing that abuse, but by using free speech to
counter and expose it.  This is where the PC crowd becomes as big a problem
as the artists and rappers: They seek to prevent or chill expression, so that
the person who says "Kill xxxxxx's" or "xxxxxx on Jesus" is attacked, instead
of the words or the message.  It is fine to move society toward disapproval
of ethnic slurs in discourse.  It is repression to hound an individual for
expressing an idea, by implying that this exercise of free speech "proves"
that he or she is a racist, chauvinist, or whateverist.

The irony is that we allow Supreme Court judges to be appointed who say:

Yet we crucify a fool like Jimmy the Greek for making a comment that repeats
a (granted -- damaging and reprehensible) racial stereotype.  Look, the guy
said something stupid verbally, and he may personally be an asshole.  But
he is no David Duke, who has said such things -- not off the cuff, or foot
in mouth -- but in printed and distributed material as well.  Yet he almost
ends up running for president!

Personally, I disagree with a number of things Jordan said, or what he seems,
unwittingly or not, to be implying (actions = speech under law). It`s important
that people who disagree with spoken or published speech (be it Duke or Ice T
or Danny-boy) should take it to task, and encourage others not to support or
purchase the product, if they wish.  But they must not try to repress it.

As for Tipster, there are valid analogies between the entertainment industries,
and our society has generally accepted (or ignored) the use of warning labels.
But their use must be legitimate, and they must not be used to supress, merely
to inform.  If a toy is intended for kids 5-9, and judged safe for such but
not for under 5 (or too boring for over 9), that is useful information, but
it does not stop the parents of a 4 year old from buying it.  A record label 
that states the artist's intended audience could be designed to be helpful,
not chilling.  But this was, unfortunately, not the tone of the Tipper
campaign. 

Others have complained because Al Gore supported her. Oh, what a
shit, to support his wife!  Better to stand up in Congress and call her a
stupid bimbo, right? Maybe he disagrees, but is willing not to interfere with
her right to express and promote an opinion?  Maybe he thinks that women can
make such choices?  Maybe that's too much for PC pinheads to grasp?  
But nooooooooooooo! (at this point, the late John Belushi would fly off his
chair, and flailing arms and legs, disappear under the table.  I shall do 
the same, having far overextended my daily alloted bandwidth.)

ODC: If you don't think this discussion is relevant to the Dead, then kiss
your favorite venue good-bye.  Oh, and could you please wear this warning
label -- Deadheads are a dangerous influence on youth under 18 -- just apply  
it between your nose and your chin, like this.

I beg your pardon, I did not 'get an education to get a job'.  I happened to
be more interested in the science area than the liberal arts area and I saw
no reason to spend 4 years studying something that didn't really excite me to
do something that I didn't want to do for the rest of my life.  Opinions like
that rank up there with "He/she is studying sociology, of course that's not a 
real major..."

My comment here is: the idea or thought that all Deadheads are

is indeed dangerous, though perhaps not intellectually so.  It is a general-
ization that can be easily disproven, but so what?  Once shouted to the masses,
an exponential volume of refutation is required to counteract it.  This is 
why juries are often ordered to disregard statements made in court: their mere
utterance can prejudice the case, even if they are later disproven.

Dangerous to power?  Yes, but not only.  The Rodney King verdict (as an idea
that those cops were not acting illegally) turned out to be dangerous and 
costly to many non-powerful people.  An idea became the basis for the 
Holocaust!

Again, the issue is not the content of the idea itself, but how that idea and
its aftereffects are treated in US society.  This is the part of the excerpt
that I agree with -- democracy defies control, meaning (to me) that it provides
the forum for advancing good ideas and beating the shit out of bad ones, and
it should provide the urge or instinct to do so.  This urge may be fully 
exercised by few (comparatively), but it is the duty of the rest of us to
protect those who speak out.  Power, on the other hand, often tries to supress
this (look at what whistleblowers vs government contractors have gone through).

Look, Jordan isn't wrong to state that free speech can be abused (if abuse
means to spread ideas that will have harmful effects -- harmful is another
subjective word; let's not fight about who defines what is harmful yet.  Can
we agree that ideas can cause effects we consider to be harm?).  Not many of
us (I hope) would argue that Hitler's use of media wasn`t harmful, once
you have the historical perspective to see where the Fascist revitalization
of Germany was steered.  The problem is the use of "clear" and "intuitive"
here, which makes Jordan's opinion sound too much like the slick slime we
get from politicians and tv evangelists.  I hope this is just "conditioned
response writing" and it is not his real intent to grease us up for the big
broomhandle ("Now that I've gotten you good folks to bend over, I'm sure
you'll enjoy what comes next").

But I think we almost all agree that we don't want to see a Judge Wapner 
residing over the People's Free Speech Court either.

complex).

Does anyone have any info about the current music scene in
Budapest ? What sections of town are the most interesting ?
I am most interested in bluegrass music and its derivatives,
though I also enjoy most other musical forms.

Red Rocks and Telluride were totally different in terms of the scene. I remember
that at Red Rocks, there were ALOT of people without tickets, but everyone was being
told you would'nt be allowed into Telluride without tickets to keep the ticketless
hordes away. However, some friends of mine went anyway, and found that many tickets 
were placed on sale at the venue the day before the show (unannounced, of course).
The message did get through though, and the place was not overrun with miracle-seekers.

Telluride offered free camping down the road from town, and also offered 
camping right next to the park for a very reasonable rate (I think it was $10
per site for both days). Also, at Telluride, I clearly remember Bill G. riding
around his Harley, and talking to all of us about why the Dead were allowed
to be there. It took a town referendum, and cleansliness was a prerequisite
of approval. We were informed of that when we drove into town (there's only one way
into the box canyon, unless you've got 4WD and a death-wish to go over the mountains).

Telluride set things up so that it would be clean: you parked the car on the edge of
town, and took a bus to the campsite (next to the park...easiest access to a venue I've
EVER had, and I got 4th row both nights because they had a separate line in for people
at the campground!!!), so people would'nt be driving around for the two days, and
as I said we were TOLD to keep it clean (given garbage bags, and drop-off points, etc.).

At Red Rocks, there was no camping within a few miles of the place, and the US Park
Service folks kicked us out within an hour of the show ending, so everyone was driving
in and out every night (we'd drive until we found a good mountain, pull the car over,
climb it, and camp...what a trip). Also, there were big problems with hot-shot rock
climbers trying to climb into the venue. I remember looking up at the rocks to see
people playing cat and mouse with park rangers dangerously close to a 50-75 foot fall
onto us. So I do think the heads did ruin Red Rocks. Also, remember that Telluride
was a 7-8 hour drive from Denver, a long-haul for the ticketless hordes.

The League of Woman Voters usually puts together something right before the
election that is supposed to present the facts, period.  No bias towards any
one candidate.  This should appear in the big Boston newspapers (Globe, etc).

As for can you change?  Call your town hall; you might be able to change your
status.  After you vote, you may change your status.  I recommend changing
your status so you don't get roped into voting for one party after each time
you vote.  "Undeclared" (?) is the "you can vote anyway" status in MA.  Usually
there is a table where you fill out a little form that states your status
after you cast your votes.

  Just because you are registered as a Democrat (whatever) doesn't 
mean you have to vote that way.  You just need to declare a party in
order to vote in the primary for that party.  And you can only vote
in the primary for 1 party/election.  I'm currently a registered Dem,
only b/c I wanted to vote in the Dem. primary, and I've been too lazy
to go to Town Hall (tm) to change back to independent...

Of the 3 big ones, the only one I think (note, my opinion) who is
remotely interested in women's issues (probably b/c of the party 
affiliation, tho') is Clinton.

IMO (which doens't mean much b/c I'm a guy) being a woman (unless, of
course, your a Phyllis Schlafly follower) and voting for GHWB is
hypocritical...

cause ... I don't get it ... ?

I would strongly consider voting Libertarian if I could get a good answer
as to how they would protect the individual citizen and the environment from
corporate greed, among other things.  I reckon I'm going to try to talk
to John Lewicke soon ....

    want even a write-in ....for the primary elections you must choose a 
    party to vote in but after you have voted you may change your party to 
    REP or DEM or IND before you leave....or go to the town hall and change

He's running for Congress against Bill Hatch and Dick Swett, in NH.  Kate
Alexander, another Libertarian DECcie (running for the Senate) and he 
are open to answering questions about Libertarianism ....

    There's never been a balanced Supreme Court.
    
    Just to clarify the Mass. primary process: what used to be called
    "independent" is now "unenrolled."  There's an Independent party now.
    
    My wife was surprised when our town's ballots were the put an "X" in
    the box type.  I was surprised that there's another way, I'd never
    heard of voting machines before.  Seems a bit impersonal.

Growing up in NYC, I was used to the big grey metal booths being rolled into
the gymnasium every year.  I always looked forward to stepping inside one
someday.  Unfortunately, being a New Enaglander, I've never done it that way
(yet).

Sure makes couting votes easier.  In a city with 9 million people, that's a big
deal.  But it is a bit impersonal, plus open to rigging by some clever
mechanical engineer.

I don't know, we used the big machines for our eight grade election to
get used to how they work.  Everyone remember how they felt in eight grade?
Adolesence-R-Us where *everything* is awkward.  One of the people got stuck
(couldn't open the curtain) and crawled out beneath it.  I was terrified.
Since that was the last time I used one of those machines I am still terrified!

An additional 'factoid' from the other night...

    Guess who was chairman of the Republican National Committee during the
    re-election campaign for Richard Nixon, and therefore during the
    Watergate breakins?  Right.  George.  He must have been out of the loop
    back then too.

Also saw some old footage of Clinton from 1978 when he first ran for Governor.
I kind of like the idea of an ex-hippie on the White House.  I doubt that
Perot fits that category, though...;-)

P.S.  I submit that typing "Vote for Clinton" is, in fact, stating an opinion,
      despite its imperative semantics.  In any other media, such a statement
      coming from an individual is considered an opinion, and not an
      advertisement.  I see no reason why Notes should be different.  In fact

    While going to watch "Moose and Squirrel" last night we got a piece 
    by Linda Ellerbee about the presidential candidates.  Gerald Ford was
    there as a concrete example ;-)  This was on Nickelodeon.  I asked 
    Hannah if she knew what all this president stuff was, and she went
    "Huh?"  So I explained in simple terms what it was and that we 
    got to chose this year and asked her who she wanted to be president.

CNN has been doing a bio on Clinton and his terms as Gov.  What they said 
in a nutshell:  First term he was committed to environment (and many other 
things) but tried to do too much and spread himself too thin.  He got ousted in 
the next election ('78?).  Next election ('82?) he came back and won, and 
changed his stand to focus on a few things he could accomplish, those being 
for the most part education and creating jobs.  He did a pretty good job with 
both but as a result the environment suffered (amoung other things), mostly at 
the hands of the paper/pulp and poultry industries.  Within the last year and a 
half he has finally started to support/propose environmental protection 
policies.

    Having a wife who is a librarian, I get to see lots of catalogs of new
    books. There is one due out, which examines the 44 or so VP's we have
    had. It seems the VP is never a consideration when voting for
    president. We have had convicted criminals, idiots, shakey people, some
    VP's (can you say Spiro Agnew) get convicted while serving.....

I agree that Gore balances Clinton on the environment politically. What 
matters though is not the individual's intentions, but whole ball of wax. 
Simpl;y put, a democratic pres. and a democratic congress will pass more

Well, the Usenet Straw Poll is over and the results are below.  Only a
few people  attempted  to  vote  multiple times  and  their votes were
disqualified.  There were over 2000 votes cast. I believe I got enough
of a  cross-section of the  Usenet community by   announcing this on a
number of different groups.  I doubt,  however, that the results below
are representative of the voting population of the United States.
Beyond this, I think the results speak for themselves.

Jum,

You could hire a committee to appoint someone to look after your desk
cleaniness for you mon.  You know, a committee of 10 or 20 people, be sure
to include some lobbyists and don't forget to take PAC money!  The results
will make a big diff. on your Prezidential Career (tm).  :-)

    boys and your geetar.  And no more "Hail to the Chief", the Monkee's
    theme song (with the fancy steps) would be more appropriate.
    
    I gotta admit, Jum, that I didn't write you in.  However I did vote
    (for state rep) a guy who used to be in my high school electronics
    class that used to put "Big Mac Attack" stickers all over the place.

     Well, my geetar will definitely be there..I don't have company over without
     playing the thing while conversing..so I'll be plucking away at cabinet
     meetings (scuse me mr Secretary..how do you play a Bbdim7)..and a couple
     pictures of the boyz of course..*and* the ALF poster that da ve an Lisa
     gave me :-)

        Well, I waited til he had finished his victory speech, and then added
        on a couple hours til I figured he was asleep, then gave him a buzz..
        His response was "Zzzzz...huh? Me? I won?..Who is this?" and then a
