I think this CD deserves its own note! I picked it up at Rockit in Nashua last Friday. If you see Drums/Space as an opportunity to go to the bathroom and visit the concessions, then you should not buy this disc. If you think Drums/Space is just ok but sort of boring, you should not buy this disc. However, if you look forward to Drums/Space as an adventure that can lead to interesting and evocative textures and mindscapes, then this disc is for you. It certainly is not "easy listening" or "accessible". It requires you to let go of your ideas about rock music and allow your mind to flow with the imagery of free-form music. The production of the disc is superb. Instruments are clear, stereo separation is perfect. Musicianship is wonderful! I can't really describe the pieces, other than to say that they've been arranged in a way that makes musical sense (to me, anyway). This must be played on a good system at decent volume to get the full effect of The Beam! Can you tell that I like it? ~dave

As a read-only type, I just wanted to say that for me this is the best Dead album I've ever heard...seriously! I get the feeling from the liner notes and the music itself that this thing is heavily edited, i.e. it aint just tapes of "Space" strung together, but a lot of studio tweaking has been done. Compared to other people operating in the avant garde/electronic space, this album needs no apologies. Brian | |||||
