207.0. "How would you change the rotation of songs?" by MR4MI2::REHILL (Call me Mystery Hill) Tue Oct 15 1991 21:45

I got his idea from the Well, but figured we could do it too.
In the RS interviews, Jerry talks about songs being stale, and that
    they should write new ones.

So, in the replies here, nominate two, and only two songs that
you'd like to see the dead "retire", nominate two songs that are out of
rotation that you'd like to see added, and for the fun of it,
nominate two songs that you'd like to see more of that are in the
    rotation.

I'll summarize the results in a week or 10 days, and the write
    lock this note.

I *like* Picasso Moon, but I've only heard the album version. The
lyrics rather put me in mind of William Gibson's first three novels
("Neuromancer", "Count Zero", and "Mona Lisa Overdrive" for the
    interested).

I'd like them to retire *the entire repertoire*. Sure, dozens of the
songs are fantastic, but how many of them have large uncharted areas?
As far as serious experimentation goes, they're mostly done.

Scrap 'em all and build something new.

From what I can see so far, it looks like we want Bob to get a whole
new selection of songs...not a bad idea,IMHO...but maybe they wouldn't
sound so stale if they mixed up the songs alittle more like back in the
early days...how about a set like this for example:

Set I- US Blues, Women R Smarter, Scarlet>Touch>Maggies
    Farm>Cumberland, El Paso, Shakedown
Set II-Loser, Black-Throated Wind, Loose Lucy, comes a time, Lost
Sailor, Space/Drums NFA ,Bertha, Attics, St. of Circumstance
       Encore: Golden Road :-)

    Retire: Saturday Nite, U.S. Bluez (& Drums/space)

Bring Back: Cryptical, Cream Puff War, Golden Road...........

More of: Loose Lucy, Comes a time....

It's not so much (to me anyways) whether they retire, bring back,
play more of, I would just like to see them mix it up more often.
I'm tired of seeing the same songs in the same position every time
it's played. And get *RID* of the complmentary Dylan spot in the
first set. Out of the 18 shows in Sept, Dylan showed up as
the second to last song (two songs followed) 9 times.

Even if you can't predict what they will play you can predict
what WON'T be played in the first set and ditto for the second set.

I really don't hate drums/space in fact I've always loved drums,
but again, mix it up. Do they always have to be in the same spot.

When things get predictable they get stale awfully fast.

I can't count the number of times I've read reviews that contain
this line, "...then I settled down as the drummers took over."
(I think I even seen something to this effect in a T!ng review ;-)

Well, enough babbling for now.

Shawn

hey all you folks who want them to retire songs: sometimes you just
have to go tothe bathroom ya know! :)

or as one grateful noter said to me in MSG this year as Weir was
staring up "Stuck inside of....", "See ya by the 7th verse" or something
like that :)

retire: throwing stones > nfa*
bringback:	Viola Lee Blues**, Spanish Jam (supplication jam for a 3rd pick)
play more: Loser**, NEw Speedway (cause the BosGarden night I missed
was the night this was played :)

* = retire the pair it's been well worn and while I'm not sick of NFA
I will be if they keep doing it....

** = thanks for the reminders

but if I could make more bring back selections I'd add in hand jive,
st stephen, the whole cryptical, lazy lightning>supp. jam, mind body
jam, a rap to good lovin' and on and on and on...

dizzy with the possibilities,
retire that resemblance of a lyric!

I agree totally with Shawn. They really should mix up the combos. If they are
worried about pairing songs in the same/similar key, that's no problem. They
have lots to choose from. I 'called' a lot of songs at MSG and BG, but mostly
because I knew 'patterns' from seeing (via this file) every set list for the
past 4+ years.

I don't *like* being able to call tunes. I want to be surprised with every
tune. Granted, there are many surprises at most shows, but they could do more.
This could be the biggest factor, IMO, contributing to the 'staleness'.

Some people viewed the Help->Slip->Fire like it was the coming of the Messiah.
Personally, I was surprised but not awestruck. This is the kind of stuff I'd
like to see them do more. Uncle->Mex? Scarlet->Fire? Estimated->Eyes?
Truckin'->(Spoonful)->He's Gone?  Cassidy->Deal?  Throwin->NFA?
Wheel->Miracle?  C'mon, mix 'em up!!

Yo Marv,.. Bobby sings (lead) on Bobby McGee,.. so you can't say those
    are all "Jerry" songs.

Whats the beef with Throwin Stones. I mean yah,.. they've played
it a lot,.. but what other "recent" Bobby song even comes close to
being this good. By recent, I mean something that was written in the
80's at least? I understand they have played it quite a bit,.. but
if you are going to ask them to retire something,.. shouldn't it be
something of a lesser calibre with a longer "having been played"
history,... like Sat. Nite I understand completely wanting to retire,..
but Throwin Stones is one of his very few relatively new tunes. I
wouldn't want to ask him top retire that. Its like asking Digital
not to sell any more 9000's.

    	Just my lousy opinion

I dunno slash, maybe people are just tired of it - I can't comment because
I personally like the song. I like some others that people want to retire
for example Walkin Blues ... I wait to hear this song but lots of you would
like to see it gone, similarly I'd like to see Black Muddy River go away but
I noticed a few people wanting to see it more. It's all subjective........

Interesting.......I agree completely with /mon, as Throwing Stones is
one of Bobby's best from the 80's (though Lost Sailor is from 1980, but
is that actually considered part of the 80's :^).

I haven't caught many Throwing Stones->NFA at all, maybe
one......however, I've caught more "Playin's" than anything. That to
me became predictable, though its been played less lately.

To answer Andy about my request to retire "Playin'".....I don't like
the way they play it anymore. I loved hearing the old versions from
the 70's, with that slower, steadier beat and the heavier sound, and
the intricate sound created from it. To me, when they play it so much
faster, it gets glazed over, the licks fly by too quickly, Bobby spits
out the words......it gets on my nerves.....and they seem to ALWAYS
play it fast.......wouldn't it be cool if they played it DIFFERENTLY
    every now and then?

That may also be a refresher for the boys......not only take a look at
tunes to rotate in/out, but take a different angle at the existing
    tunes.

    Dave

PS: Sorry for adding to the digression, Mystery.....hope you can still
complete your survey from this here note....:^)

this is tough to vote for only two of each ---

Retire: MIRACLE,
        Black Peter

Bring Back: Passenger, Lazy Lightning

More: Promised Land, Let It Grow

---------

More retires: US Blues, (all the current combinations, not the songs - just
break up the same combos) Move/break up drum/space -- mix up
drums into other parts of the show - get rid of space --
              the slow version of FOTD

More to bring back: The fast version of FOTD,
Acoustic sets (i.e. anything and everything from Reckoning
                      - For The Faithful... Ripple, Jack-a-Roe, Monkey, Bird,
                      Cassidy, Roses, Rosa Lee, ahhhh....)
Dead Blues (Pig and Brent) - just because there not with us
doesn't mean their songs can't live on more often!

More to Play More of: Comes a Time,
                      Black Muddy,
                      Eyes w/ Branford ;^),
                      Uncle Johns

Come to think of it it's amazing they're not TOTALLY bore, considering all the
dizzying possibilities...

Since I put Throwing Stones on the same category at Day Job, I still
say retire it! It's not that it isn't a good song, but I'm sick of
it. They're playing it to death. Once per run average is *too*
much!! I didn't miss Day Job when they retire it - I'm pretty sure
I won't miss Throwing Stones. Just my opinion though.

For me, Throwing Stones just doesn't fit the "image" I have of the
Grateful Dead's music. Sort of an outcast I suppose. And, every time I
hear it, they play it just about the same way. Bob always stretches/screams
the lyrics at the same places... the jam is relatively the same, etc...
perhaps this is the reason why I dislike it vs. the non-fitting image thought.

Perhaps what I see w/ TS is what others see with Playin' In The Band.
I like Playin', I don't like it when they cut it short. If you want to hear
is very nice Playin', check out the version on 3-24-90, Albany. Very nice
and very long (I have a very nice tape [thanks Mystery] of this show if
anyone is interested.

I've been getting back to listening to some '71 tapes, which used to
be my fave "dead_year". Great stuff! My rental car here in Ireland has a
nice Kenwood stereo.... thanks Avis!!! I listened to a great rendition of
Easy Wind from 2/21/71 (?) this morning... Bob actually take lead and does
a decent jam!!!!

> Space!!!!

...well, not to disagree with "the one true Dave" or anything...but not
EVERYone wants to say that ;-)...while it may not "have a good beat and
be easy to dance to" ! ...there's something about that portion of a show
that -I- personally find very compelling...it can contain moments of great
inspiration, experimentation, imagination...it can let you "see" into
the musicians' souls, maybe, read their moods, whatever you want to call it...
I think it gives them a point where they can REALLY let go and just let
"the music play the band"...they don't know what it's going to be like ahead
of time but it's interesting (to me) to hear what they make up and how it
comes together (and, certainly, how it doesn't too!)...and it just might
be (for them) the most "fun" because they are really on the edge there,
listening to where eachother is going and going where they want to but also
trying to make it all fit...

but, anyways, I like to hear that "everyone wants to say" something that
I (again) don't agree with...cause I don't WANT to be like everyone else!

Debess_the_rebel_without_a_cause

oh, and by the way, I'm kinda partial to "Victim or the Crime" too ;-)
yeah, and I miss Donna Jean's wailing in "Playing"...I REALLY do!

Maybe they should give Bruce a crack at coming up with some new
arrangements for some of these "retired" songs ... for example, I'd
really like to see 'em bring back "Passenger", but with a slower
tempo and more of a "Hornsby" arrangement ...
