	... so, i bet ya'll are wondering what i'm listening to or wondering
what the hell ever provoked me start this topic!!  :-^)


	anyway, i'm listening to 4-17-84 at Niagara Falls... h->s->f,
woman are smarter, eyes ... my copy is really cruisin' (fast) but it
sounds like a great show.... they also did the take a step back thing....

    I'm not listening to anything right now. I left my desk keys at
    home and my walkman is locked in my desk with about 250 tapes. :-/
    
    I've got my taping equipment stashed in a railroad station locker 
    along with a few tasty tapes for Phyllis to test her new Nakamichi 
    on, but that doesn't do me any good here.
    
    If I had my way, I'd be listening to a healyboard of MSG 9/18/87,
    but I'll just have to save it for the train.

well I'm listening to my fingers tape the keyboard, a whirrrr of a tk50 in
one of those "leprachaun" boxes, phones ringing off in the distance, the
people in the office behind me giggling, other peoples fingers on their
keyboards a 60 cycle humm from something or other.....

just to name a few :)

    "Touch of Gray" (refer note 185.) Got the CD yesterday, taped it last
    night... (Also got deadicated, and the new Jethro Tull  -ooops am I
    allowed to mention other bands in here....)
    
    (Actually like the song (ToG) so much, I have recorded it have a dozen
    times in succession onto the same tape, so that I dont have to

Hey, funny you should ask!  This morning I just took out my quasi-Walkman for
the first time in months ....

I'm listening to a Moody Blues tape I made for myself ... bunch of different
songs (all pre-1975).  I would be listening to Dead 5/18/72 but I left it in
my truck.  :^/

    Just starting 6-18-74 - I am gonna rock while doing some tedious 
    tasks that I have saved for today.  Eyes-->China Doll, weather report
    Suite a bit later!!! :-)

I'm listening to the noise from the drills, jackhammers, etc. upstairs in PKO3
as they make room for Ed Services.  I don't know this guy Ed, but he must be
really important. :-)

i've been listening to the moodys a lot lately.  mostly in search of the lost
chord and a question of balance (a terrific album).  matter of fact, the
person that works below where i live hadda call me up this am to lower it a
bit... ooops...

I'm listening to the whirring and clicking and other building noises around
me and trying to drive "harvest" by Neil Young outta my head.  I love the song
but can't get the damn thing outta my head :^/

Cassidy.  At a good volume... sure sounds nice!

Was listening to 6-15-76 I on the way in...can't remember what songs I listened
to though :^/

"Badge" from 24 NIGHTS -- my wife just *knew* I couldn't wait for my B-day 
for this CD... :)

On the way into work this morning, I listened to 6/5/82 Jerry + Kahn.  This
is an excellent acoustic "Jerry" tape for those of you who are into acoustic
dead_based music!

Great tape, and the audience in the tape has quite a bit of respect for the
musicians (very quiet during the songs!).  Even Jerry, at one point, says,
"It is really quiet in here."

If you're interested, perhaps I'll make ya a copy (if ya ask, that is!).

Listening to 5-6-81 (thanks Mr Henderson) right now.  In my group, we're trying
a new thing: allowing some people to work from home 1 or 2 days during the
week.

Today is my first day working from home.  My group has set me up with a 3100
and a 9600 baud modem, which I use for asynchronous DECnet.  I have plenty
of disk storage and CPU power to do my work ... I use the network to stay
in touch and xfr files back to my site.

The hope is to accomplish more in less time, by avoiding the daily distractions
at work....

We'll see how it goes....

Ronnie's latest album.  Some really great stuff on there - about 54 mins worth.
It is split about 50-50 between instrumentals and vocal arrangements.  The
photo on the cover was taken by a guy who claims to be from my hometown too!
If you've been seeing Ronnie on a regular basis, you'll recognize a lot of
the tunes....

Hey JC, is Ronnie paying you or what??  ;^)

How was the show last night?  I really gotta get to the Bull one of these

VERY HOT.  On a scale of hotness from 1-10, I rate it at an 8.  Those shows
last April right before he went to Europe are going to be very hard to beat.

    set is out.  Two discs of music and the interview disc, on sale for $27
    and change.  Comes in a nifty hardcover book.

Today it's a "best of" tape sent by a friend...
labeled "San Bernadino, 2/77", it claims to have the
first Terrapin and first Estimated Prophet performance.
The original must have been a soundboard, sound is good,
but there's an annoying number of dropouts in the tape...

    Right this minnit I'm sittin' here with headphones on trying to figure
    out the setlist for this Allman Bros. tape I got yesterday ... it's
    from Shoreline ... 10-06-91 ... and if anybody's got the set list I'd
    really appreciate some help, cuz there's a coupla tunes I can't
    identify.
    
    It's got this real folksy-bluesy version of GDTRFB on it ... odd to say
    it's probably the most laid-back tune on the whole tape.  Not even the
    same lyrics as the Dead use.
    
    Grate tape ... it's inspired me to do something this weekend that I
    rarely do.  I'm taking my walkman, and this tape, to Sunday River with
    me.  Elizabeth Reid and I are gonna head over to Shockwave and defy us
    some gravity ... ;^)

	I just bought Blues From The Rainforest by Merl Saunders with
special guest Jerry Garcia.  Some very nice, melodic stuff on that cd.
64 minutues.  Great stuff to crank through the klipsch when nobody is

    	Going Down the Road is a "traditional" song meaning its been sung
    for so long that nobody can quite figure out who wrote it. It has about
    2,396 verses,... give or take. I have a traditional blues or blugrass
    music book at home that lists about 100 verses or some such,.. some are
    pretty funny. Dicky Betts introduced the song at SHoreline as "the
    first song I ever learned to play",.. (can you hear that on your
    tapes?) I actually like his approach to the tune A LOT! Seems like 
    thats more the way it was intended to be done than the "rockier
    rollier" dead version...

    Both are killer 1st gen soundboards from DAT masters (they're belated 
    birthday presents from DAT snobs (tm) who are still tempting me to

    If I wanted to tease you, I would post something here every time
    I bring rare and relatively uncirculated vault tapes to work to 
    listen to. Now *that* would be teasing. I suppose I deserve that 
    remark despite the fact that I working on clearing up my queue.
    Oh well, c'est la vie. 
    
    FWIW, only 4 people I owe tapes to responded to my offer of Buffalo 
    and Albany tapes as compensation and you weren't one of them. The 
    alternative, I believe, was to return blanks. 
    
    What the hell, I hereby declare this to be open season on Ger day.

    Back to the subject -- I was listening to the Cal Expo Baba O'Riley ->
    Tomorrow Never Knows encore from the Grateful Dead Hour.  Sounded good,
    but Keith Moon's manic drumming was missing from BOR.  Sometimes I wish
    the percussionists would go back to being drummers and bang some skins! 
    Bobby was pretty lost on his vocals to TNK, which was no big deal since
    Vince was mixed MUCH louder anyway.  I suspect that Vince wanted to do
    these songs for the same reason "Passenger" was written -- to give the
    band a chance to "rock out."  If someone played this encore for me
    without telling me it was the Dead, I might not have guessed.  What's next?

    These are the first tapes where i have had a chance to hear the new
    ear phone (?) sound system.  WOW they are really on as far as harmony.
    They can get almost to quiet with this new set up though.  This is
    also my first listen to the band with Vince and no Bruce - Vince is
    GRATE!!!!  He is fitting in great!!
    
    ALSO...
    my first listen ever to Phish - different but I like it - i need a few
    more listens.  It is from 4-29-92.

Doncha love that when that happens?  I jsut finished making 23 tapes for a
non-DEChead friend - a whole bunch of early stuff that I haven't listened
to in a while... nice to hear those showz again....

While listening to 5/8/77 on the way home from Shrewsbury (thanks CTW!), I
concluded that not only does that show have the best Scarlet->Fire I've
ever heard, but a mighty fine St. Stephen and Morning Dew, too!  What were
those guys on that day?

	June Tabor's new album/CD "Angel Tiger".  Excellent.  This will 
	be a new favorite.  The album starts with a tear jerking version
	of Bob Franke's "Hard Love".

	Of course, I like June Tabor so much that one friend of mine
	declared that I would probably be thrilled to hear a recording of
	her gargling :-) 

	The June Tabor was a birthday present.  The same friend also gave
	me Rory Block's new release, "Ain't I Woman", which is also 
	excellent.  I'd buy it just for "Silver Wings".  And to round
	out the gift - this person is quite the friend! - she gave me
	Greg Brown's "Dream Cafe".

	Well, I'm not listening to it now, but I did last night:
	Jimi Hendrix Experience - Live at either Winterland/Fillmore.
	*Incredible* stuff!!!  Man were they *loud*, and was Jimi
	talented!  A nice ~11 minute Red House sent chills up my spine.
	Some nice jazzy stuff on there too, as well as really good versions
	of his "hits" (later versions weren't all that hot when he got 
	sick of playing them).  Jack Casady plays bass on Killing Floor.  
	Some nice liner notes by Bill Graham (RIP).  Instead of a little
	hard-to-extract booklet with the cd, there's a hard-to-extract 
	mini-fillmore-type-poster that unfolds and looks *great*!

	I got this disc free, along with Hendrix Radio Days, Planet Drum,
	and a Miles Davis disc from joining the BMG CD Club. Not a bad deal!

CD clubs are good for the basics, but after that, well, I found they did not
have much to offer.

You can get a lot for free though!

I joined one, got 6 free.  Then, i recommended deb to join and she got 6
free for me _plus_ I got 2 free for recommending her.  then, deb recommended
me again, got 6 free, and deb got 2 free for recommending me!!  so, that was
a total of 22 free CDs... hadda buy 9 at the "regular rip-off club prices"
for all of these....

I agree with ya JC. 

After the Columbia House CD club aggravations, I said never again, but
I couldn't resist getting these particular CD's for "free".  The BMG deal 
is 8 for 1: 4 free now, obligation to buy 1 @ regla ripoff price within a
year, then 3 more free.  Then I'm out, as quickly as possible.

yeah, bmg is the best deal

they're best offer was 4 free, buy one at half price, and then get 3 more free;
that's it; you've got 8 discs for the price of a half, and your obligation is
done; and if you get a friend to sign up, you get 2 free just for that

bmg actually does run a lot of non-initial-offer deals which are pretty good;
i got crossroads (4 clapton cd's, each with about 70 min of music) for $30; one
spot on one track on one disc was skipping on my player; so i called bmg and
they sent me another whole set; i asked if i should sent back the original set,
and they said no; so i sold it to somebody else (after telling him that it
skipped on my player - i don't know if it skipped on his) for half of what it
cost me; ended up getting 4 70+ min cd's for $15; i also got dreams (4 disc
allmans set) for $30

    I joined BMG when I first got my CD player.  The deals seem really
    good but I questioned the quality of the CDs.  Almost every CD I
    got from them had a cracked case and many of the CDs had to be 
    returned becaused they skipped.  I finally got out because I got
    tired of sending them back for replacements.  I also wondered -
    why did I never have these problems with the ones I bought in the
    stores?  I kind of figured it was as they say - you get what you
    pay for.

    I think that if you shop wisely - buy what's on sale, scoop up loads of
    $3 off coupons in Harvard Square, hit the used stores, etc, you'll end
    up with about the same deals as the clubs. Plus you don't have to deal
    with returning the "monthly selection" which is never something you
    want, their selection isn't that great (how many small labels do they
    carry?), plus you never know what you'll find by just browsing.
    And you're supporting your local merchants, not a multinational
    conglomerate.
    
    Great find last weekend: new copy of "Col Bruce Hampton and his
    Aquarium Rescue Unit" for $1.99.  Really good album.

yes, this may be true for the regular deals with the clubs once you're a
member, but i don't think you'll find any store that will give you 8 CD's
for the price of a half; with BMG, once you've paid for that single half-price
selection, your commitment is done, and you can immediately quit and save
yourself the monthly hassle of returning the card; granted, they're selection
isn't all that great, but they've got enough interesting stuff that i'd bet

p.s. you picked up an Aquarium Rescue Unit album for $2?  where?  cd or vinyl? 
i've heard about these guys and have been curious to give them a listen

    I'm a member of Colombia House CD club.  I got 8 for free and then
    bought 2 at half price (or maybe it was 6 free . . . ) now all I
    have to do according to the rules (which I thoroughly read for any
    catches) is buy 3 CDs at regular price in the next year.  That is
    supposeovely it -- anyone know otherwise?

	I was a member in that a year or 2 ago, and that's it as far
	as I know.   Just buy the obligatory-number at _regular_ prices
	(no sale stuff counts), and you're obligation is complete.

	Ken who bought Hendrix' Rainbow Bridge from that club after having
	 	wanted to see it for *years* (have had the album for a looong
		time).

    	I belonged to that club last year.  I figured that with the 
    	initial offer (for me it was i think 8 cds for a penny) and
    	the purchace obligation (for me it was 6 cds in a year) 
    	the cd price averaged about $7.50 per cd.  Not bad.  The 
    	trouble was that their selection got a little monotonous
    	after a while.  Like Scott said, they don't carry the 
    	small labels, and they definitely favor the stuff that
    	makes it to the charts.

CD clubs and the like start making the big bucks on you when you start buying
CDs _beyond_ your obligation.  That shipping and handling charge is pretty
high - not to mention the CD price.

I mostly buy from Noteworthy - a guy around here at DEC does a weekly order
so I can order one CD and not have to pay much more then 40 cents for
shipping and handling (around Xmas, it is more like 12 cents!!)....

    
    	Yeah, it seems like the shipping and handling charges
    	cancel out a lot of the savings on mail order CDs.
    	A couple years ago there was a guy here at ZKO who 
    	knew someone who worked for Noteworthy.  If you sent
    	him the names of the cds you wanted, he'd place a big
    	order about once a month and have his friend pick them 
    	all up.  He'd bring them into work, and you just had
    	to go and give him the cash.  No shipping fee at all.
    	I really got spoiled, and then the guy's friend left
    	Noteworthy.  :-(

One of the "Jefferson Airplane Loves You" boxed set CDs ... "Two
Heads" ... aaahhhhhhh :^)

At last, good sound quality ....

FWIW, I got set 1 (but not set 2) on DAT.  I think it's from a sbd reel, and
the sound quality ain't all that bad ...

nope.  I reckon 7-13-84 was the last d.s. before the 10-9-89 d.s.  apparently,
before that '84 d.s., a shooting star streaked across the sky and caused
quite a commotion.  the boyz just figured that d.s. was appropriate at that

that crowd reaction on 10-9-89 always sends chills down my arms.  must have
been a ______killler______ rush, espec. for the dose-heads!

    Listening to somebody's copy of the 66 stuff followed by two

So, how's the '71 tape sound?  What about the WG soundcheck?  I have both of
these and the quality has 'aged' a bit (that is, at the time they were good,
but as of today, that ain't that great!).

    Dillon Gym sounds very crisp except for the 1/2 dozen digital
    dropouts. I'll need to upgrade at some point. No hurry. It was 
    an extra tape someone gave me when they upgraded theirs so I
    know where to get the upgrade. 
    
    The Glen tape is the best available unless you have a DAT of 
    the master. Only one analog gen and that's from the reel master
    to PCM dub. The Glen check is a harse as far as Dead boards go 
    though.

    I think the story is basically correct, but I believe that the
    motivation was a little more involved.  From what I've heard, Phil
    had some contacts down at JPL, and was intrigued by the "face" on Mars.
    So he got some stuff together and this Dark Star was accompanied by 
    various astro and space shots.  So the meteor was a serendipitous
    occurence, not the reason to play Dark Star, which apparently had
    been planned in advance.

Well, not exactly listening to it now, but last night listened to 5/7/70,
MIT Dupont Gymnasium.  An audience tape, with a lot of audible conversation
from the taper and his pals.  

The taper (or his pal) notices at the beginning of the second set 
"He's wearing a strike shirt!"  5/6/70 there were nation-wide campus strikes
to protest the Kent State killings.

Jerry introduces Dire Wolf as the "ultimate paranoid on the streets song",
adding that "you can sing along if you like".

On 5/7/70 the Dead played _every_ song from Workingman's Dead (!), which was 
released sometime in May, 1970.

at Buffalo on the same tour.  Great stuff, but I was so exhausted I was
falling asleep during some of the second set.  Martin, of course, is
now with Zero, though had also played in the Legion of Mary incarnation
of the JGB.

The Dead probably got their version of Ain't It Crazy from Lightnin' Hopkins,
who was doing it in the early 60's and well before I'm sure.

The riff is one of Lighnin's 2 or 3 favorite riffs, that is, about 1/3 of
each of the Lightnin' Hopkins CDs I have has a tune to that riff! :-)
Kinda similar to how Bo Diddley has "his" riff, and Elmore James has his
riff (Ahh believe, Ahhh believe Ah dust my broom DA DA DA  DA DA DA  DA DA DA
DA  DA  DAAAAA!!! [and repeat])

    Listening to the 9/26/93 show from Boston Garden.
    
    I've got chills after listening to the best "Standing On The Moon" I've
    ever heard.  Jerry's in excellent form, especially at the end, just
    wailing "I'd rather be with you," then he builds on that with the
    guitar to an incredible climax.  
    
    When I saw the show, I thought I had just witnessed something great;
    it's even better than I remember it.
    
    Jeez, I've gotta go change my underwear.  Too good.

    When I was younger (I won't get into how much younger), I used to head
    into Boston on Friday nights, and go to a place called The Boston
    Tea Party. It was a swell place, it usually cost $2.50 to get in, and
    you would see three bands, and four sets. The first band would also be
    the last band of the night.
    
    My second time there, the opening band was called Mountain. They had
    this monster of a man, Leslie West, playing lead guitar. Leslie had on
    a leather jacket, with long fringes on it, he had long hair, in an afro
    type style, all bushy, and when he strapped on his Gidson Les Paul, it
    looked like he was playing a ukele. He was big. But boy could he play.
    
    So, for Christmas, I got two Leslie West CD's, both produced in
    1993.One of them is live, and one is a studio CD. I was recently
    wondering what he has been up to. From the live CD, it looks like just
    the same, to whit: Mississippi Queen, Never In My Life, Roll Over
    Beethoven, Nantuckett Sleighride...all of the Mountain classics...
    
    But the studio CD shows he's also been writing songs. And he still can
    play that Les Paul.
    
    Extra Bonus Question: What is a Nantucket Sleighride?
    
    

    The wild ride in the little dinghys they used to hunt whales in that
    happened after the harpoon would hold in the whale. The whale would 
    take off like a wounded animal and the little boat would be dragged for
    a Nantucket sleigh ride. How they ever rowed those boats back to a 
    mothership dragging a whale carcass is beyond me. But, at least in 
    those days it was a fair fight.
    
    What do I get?

    I saw Leslie West and Mountain (Jack Bruce, Felix Pappalardi) play at
    the Philly Spectrum in 1969.  This was so long ago that the opening
    band was Ozzie Osbourne with Black Sabbath...I don't often admit to
    ever having paid to see that idiot, but Mountain was the reason for
    going, not Ozzie.  I remember listening to this enourmous man playing
    a tiny little guitar (we were in the balcony, opposite the stage) and
    he made it sound for all the world like a violin - and in 1969 there
    was no such thing as a synthesizer, much less a midi.  He was amazing.

    A good buddy of mine loves to tell the story of how Leslie West
    started a show one night at the Fillmore East by playing Mississippi
    Queen while being suspended by a rope from the rafters!!! Must have
    been one He!! of a strong rope, eh??? Sounds like Leslie was tripping
    one night at a performance of Peter Pan...

    	Wow, I didn't think I'd find so many Mountain/Leslie West
    fans....
    
    	Mountain and Canned Heat were my two earliest musical
    influences...and  of course, Grand Funk Railroad, but that
    goes without needing to be said.
    
    

    I can remember seeing Mountain in May 1970 when Felix Pappalardi
    was still with them. (He produced all of Cream's albums from Disreali
    Gears to Goodbye.) He had a Les Paul Jr. which did look like a ukelele
    in his massive hands. They were warming up for electric Hot Tuna and
    were louder than Tuna!
    
    In '71 I saw him with the West, Bruce, and Laing band. Their new
    material wasn't that great but it was a thrill to hear Bruce do
    "Sunshine of Your Love" and the other Cream hits along with the
    Mountain hits "Missisippi Queen, "Flowers of Evil" come to mind.
    Actually, we didn't hear them we *felt* them. We were in the second row
    in front of these Marshall stacks that were cranked up well past 10.
    
    I saw the new West album but didn't recognize him. He's lost a lot of
    weight and looked years younger than the last time i saw them.

    	I was given "Dick's Picks" for Christmas and last night was the
    first time I got to listen to it with the volume turned up. That makes
    a real difference as I went from, "Yah it's pretty good", to, "Wow!!!".
    That's some really nice stuff and I hope my neighbor across the street 
    liked it because it was probably audible over there. I really like the 
    way Phil was shaking my seat.

    Hey, I saw Mountain at the Boston Tea Party, too.  In fact, I think I
    saw them twice -- in '69 and '70.  Or was it '70 and '71?  Can't
    remember.  That was quite a while ago.
    
    What I do remember is sitting on the floor about six feet in front of
    this massive guy with the most bloodshot-red eyes I've ever seen.  And,
    man, they were LOUD!  And Leslie West just wailed on that thing.  Made
    it scream.
    
    BTW, also saw Allman Bros. (w/ Duane), Traffic, and Jethro Tull at the

    their big audiences, and the Tea Party was a great small club to see
    them all.  No chairs; everyone just sittin' cross-legged on the floor.

    I remember driving by Juniper golf course in a '63 Ford Falcon wagon,
    equipped with Panasonic Thrusters, playing Several Species at intense
    volume, holding the speakers to the windows, so all the golfers could
    share the madness...I can still remember the puzzled looks of the guys
    sitting in front of the clubhouse, having a drink, hearing us drive
    by...aaahh, this was not last week by the way, but probably 1978 or
    so...the good old Daze   :)

to me.  Many images come back of high school dazes and lying 
on my brothers bed listening to this stuff.  Sigh....

    secrets and the piper at the gates of dawn. both are available on 
    cd from capitol. two others worth considering are the soundtrack to 
    the movie more and obscured by clouds. the piper cd has the studio
    versions of astronomy domine and interstellar overdrive. the saucer
    cd has the studio versions of the title cut and set the controls...

Yeah, that brings back some nice memories.  Best one was a free outdoor
concert on my birthday in '74 back in college.  Jonathan Edwards, 
David Bromberg, and John Hammond Hammond.  Not a bad line up.
At least I think Jonathan Edwards was at that one.  Memories of those
times are open to suspicion, perhaps due to the song theme previously
mentioned.  I do remember Bromberg giving John Hammond a big hug, so
I'm positive of those two.

Iris DeMent - "Infamous Angel".  Didn't know her stuff really, but I'd heard 
some good things and there was a CD sale, so...  I haven't been disappointed.
Acoustic folk tales of the heartland kind of thing.  As I was buying it
the sales person said her voice took a bit of getting used to, and I can
now understand that, and appreciate it.  Sort of in the same genre as 
Nanci Griffith (she appears on one song of Nanci's "Other Voices, Other Rooms"
album, also an excellent selection).  And John Prine writes well of her on 
the back of the CD, so it seemed a safe bet.

Doesn't the term "record album" originate from when an album was actually a 
book of pages where each page was a 78 speed records? I seem to think I've
seen one of those once. 
	And, why should record refer to the memory medium when it's spelled 
just like  record, like they made a recording and put it on some kind of 
memory medium. 

	Re: what we did before CDs
	SOme of us had to endure long spaces in the middle of songs while we 
waited for the tracks to change. 8-) I don't miss those spaces, but I still 
know where they existed in many Aerosmith songs.

The tune is actually titled "She Belongs to Me"  and is listed in my Deadbase V
(which only goes up to '90) as having been played 10 times in total. Nine
times in '85, and once in '66.  The 4/4/85 show was the first time it
had been played since 66, and it was definitely a crowd pleaser.  At least
I remember being pleased with it as I sat in the tapers section with me
itty-bitty sony stereo mic ;-)  Good show overall, but I'm sure there are
better copies than mine.

Tape/Song of the weekend is 6/23/74's U.S. Blues.   Bobby unreels an
_amazingly_ smooth, _long_ solo about a minute before the vocals of U.S. Blues
start.  Bobby gets going on a riff, and Jerry fades back to let Bobby do
his stuff!  You know its Bobby soloing, cause in the middle of his riffing
Jerry plays along a bar or 2, and you can clearly pick out Jer's guitar tone...
so then that OTHER guitar soloing has to be... Bobby!

Bill Monroe Box Set (1936-1994)

Bill Monroe is credited with inventing bluegrass music.
The 4 CD set is a pretty definitive overview overview
of the history and development of bluegrass music.
Mix Bill Monroe with early blues and you get rockabilly.
One page of the liner notes is a tribute written by
Jerry Garcia.  Easy to see where the inspiration for
Old and In The Way came from (in fact, Peter Rowan plays
on several of the cuts from several decades ago).
Despite the 58 year timespan, Bill Monroe is still touring.

Highly recommended.

    I remember Rocketman being blasted between the sets....especially 
    toward the end of the song....they did Yellow Brick Road too!  I was 
    pretty major at the time (if you know what I mean) so as a result I 
    do specifically remember that being cranked....knocked the wind outta 
    me.  
    
    That was such a good show I was having problems speaking afterwards...
    blah blah blah blah.....ya know?

I remember that Rocketman too!  One of those nights where I didn't really
feel like moving much from my seat during the break, even though my Uncle
_hadn't_ come with me to the show.  :-)

Was that the tour it rained like hell going into the show?
I remember getting soaked a few times, those damn lines into the Centrum.

    Its a good thing I'm at home when I try to answer these questions re
    the famous elbow incident.
    
    My error - the book in question is Playing in the Band by David Gans.
    For those of you who own this book, check out page 51 where there is a
    three picture sequence of the boyz (without Keith & Donna) checking 
    out Billy's elbow. The caption under the pictures reads 
    "The mysterious 'elbow sequence' at Boston Garden, May 1977."
    
    Perhaps Billy was attacked by one of those rats in a leather jacket
    that have been note to frequent this venue:-) :-) :-) Judging from the
    smiles on their faces other explanations are more likely

    Alright....yup, touch me now is from The Musical Box, from Nursery
    Cryme, their 3rd album, but the 1st that added Phil Collins on drums,
    and Steve Hackett on guitar...this is the "classic" Genesis lineup that
    we all know and love...
    
    some of my fave music to play on keyboards...and fyi, the entire
    Genesis catalog is being re-issued on remastered cd's...look for
    "definitive edition remaster" on the back of the cd...I just picked up
    Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot remasters, and they are cooooool...I will
    replace my entire Genesis cd's with the remasters at some point...
    
    I also have some grate Genesis boots...audio and video
    
    I'm a big fan of Peter Gabriel's music, but to me his best work was
    back in the Genesis daze...well, at least my fave PG music was Genesis,
    fwiw

    There is a double CD set of Genesis live cuts, "The Way We Walk", that

    tape from Europe 72, Copenhagen...the Good Lovein-->caution-->who do ya
    love-->good lovin that Pig does is one of his best raps IMO. Also like
    the NFA-->GDTRFB-->NFA from that tape.

    I also like Wind & Wuthering, really liked what Steve Hackett added to
    the band.  I like the "Seconds Out" phase of Genesis best, as I
    preferred Phil Collins' voice to Peter Gabriel's.  When Phil went solo,
    Genesis went pop with him.

    ahhh yes....Wind & Wuthering..."Seconds Out" was actually recorded
    during the '77 W&W tour (except for The Cinema Show, which was recorded
    during the '76 Trick of the Tail tour)  I feel that the W&W tour is a
    peak for Genesis, they were playing beautifully, Phil really does a
    fine job of performing the older PG material, including Supper's Ready.
    
    Trick of the Tail is my fave album from Genesis, maybe 'cuz that's the
    1st thing that got me into the band...TOTT was the 1st studio album
    after PG's departure by the way, and W&W was Steve Hackett's last
    studio album...he decided to leave the band during the mixing sessions
    for "Seconds Out"
    
    And coincidentally I'm listening to The Lamb right now, celebrating the
    20th anniversary of its' worldwide release....but the real celebrating
    will be at home later with a sam adams and.......:)

    Tim, we're talking about Genesis, a band I'm very into, and apparently
    a few other noters are familiar with their older material, back when
    Peter Gabriel was the lead vocalist, and Phil Collins was the drummer,
    and the backup vocalist...altho Phil did sing lead on a few toonz here
    and there...I understand the sentiments against Phil's recent work, but
    he is not just a pop singer, he is one top-rate drummer, and the old
    Genesis material proves it...
    
    so, rfb, you saw the Selling England & the Lamb tours...lucky you...I
    didn't get into them until 1978, and my 1st tour was the Duke
    tour...and I'm lucky enuff to have a tape of my very 1st Genesis show,
    6/18/80 Orpheum Theatre, Boston...
    
    the "old" Gabriel era Genesis music could be grouped under the "70's
    English Progressive" label....it goes Very Well with oatbran :)

I was just teasing - I have Selling England by the Pound, 
and I've enjoyed it ever since it first came out ('74?),
but frankly I lost interest when the "Lamb Lies Down" 
album came out...then Phil went pop, and that sealed it
for me.

I had similar feelings about the Airplane - up until Baron
Von Tollbooth, which isn't really Airplane, but after that
especially once Octopus came out, I thought they sold out
to make bucks.  Of course, I've always thought Marty Balin
was a whining, narcisistic putz anyway, and blamed him
for the whole sellout, much like Collins did for Genesis...
Similar transitions - a switch from songs with social
context, to sappy, bubblegum, romantic ballads aimed at
teenage girls.  No thanks.

No offense intended to those who still follow Collins,
Genesis, Balin or Starship...just my opinion.

On the other hand, I found it encouraging when my twelve
year old son developed a taste for Genesis - as opposed to
Dr. Dre, and Boyz II Men....etc. etc...;-)  It could be
worse...

How can you pick a favorite Genesis, they are all great, at least all the 
ones with Peter Gabriel.  Phil Collins is an excellent drummer and back-up 
vocalist, and I actually liked the Genesis Concert that I saw with Phil as 
the leader but not as much as when Peter Gabriel was Genesis.

Two of the best concerts I've ever seen were Genesis on the Lamb Lies Down 
tour and Peter Gabriel on one of his most recent tours before WOMAD.

    Geoff, I wish I had seen the Lamb tour...fortunately, I've gotten into
    boots, so I can see what's available from the old daze...there is no
    full boot of the lamb live (video that is) but plenty of audio...I've
    seen them 7 times, Duke was my 1st tour, 2 times on the Abacab tour,
    2 nights in a row on the "Mama" tour, 1 Invisible Touch (sometimes
    referred to as invisible band) and We Can't Dance...yawn...
    
    seen Peter 3 times solo, Phil twice...I still like any of those shows,
    but my fave of their music is the old stuff...keyboard wise, I've
    worked on a lot if it over the years...

    This is a great bluegrass album by Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, and
    Russ Barenburg.  All instrumental, and what instrumentals!
    The liner notes are pretty decent too ;-)
    If you like the Garcia Grisman stuff, you'd love this one.
    Someone a few years back had a bluegrass tree from Mechanics Hall
    in Worcester.  The lineup here is a partial subset of that
    group, with Douglas on dobro/steel/slide whatever, Meyer on 
    bass, and Barenberg on guitar.  Sam Bush joins in on mandolin
    for a few numbers.  Great christmas idea...

    This is the best SMR I've ever heard.  Comparable to B. Gahdin 10/1/95, 
    but longer and more intense.  Jerry takes it up and down like a roller
    coaster ride of emotion.  He tells us a story, then let's us know that
    so many roads do indeed tease his soul.  Anticipation->joy-> sadness,
    ->joy again->chaos, and then a very solemn closing.  This is good shit!
    
    Music Never Stopped is interesting cause Bobby plays lead for the last
    segment (the jig, as I like to call it).

    Well, *technically* I'm listening to Todd Rundgren's Utopia, (no wonder
    my foot is tapping) but *yesterday* I was listening to 4.28.87 Brendan
    Byrne Arena (radio broadcast) which the Great Russell Surace (take a
    bow, Russ) so generously donated to the modest but growing Westervelt
    Live Dead suite!

    This very high quality show blew me away, I've only heard it once but
    it was great fun.  Alternate rendition of something or other from
    American Beauty, it escapes me just now with this other music blaring
    in my headphones.

    This is tape #2 for me.  I'm a newbie!  Really looking forward to
    picking up some ace shows [hint hint! ;-) ]

    I also listened to Europe '72 part 2 this morning, courtesy of WesO.
    It was one of the first albums recommended to me and it surely lives up
    to the advance billing. 

    I really dig discovering new bands.  All that music just laying there
    waiting for me!  Yum yum!

	the encore is, appropriately, 'Werewolves of London', and
	I understand after the show, the audience spilled out into
	the streets of London howling!

	I've been listening to some '90 tapes recently, one from
	France on my way in yesterday, one from MSG on my way home
	last night and this one from London coming in today...all
	three have 'Stella Blue' on them (even though the London
	setlist did not have it written on it - it was a surprise)...
	the one from MSG is especially intense, the anticipation
	Jerry creates for the jam after "gonna make 'em shine..Shine!"
	is like none I've ever heard before...but in any event, this
	song is really getting to me lately and to have it pop up on
	the 3 most recent tapes I've listened to is, well, cosmic ;-)

    "Terrapin Station" - the album and the song.

    It looks like I'll be the sort of fan who likes the studio albums
    a lot.  I usually start there.

    I'm just discovering the Dead.  Listened to "Reckoning" this
    weekend (double live album I bought years ago and never got
    around to).  It's rapidly growing on me.

    "Terrapin" makes the second studio album I'll be getting into
    heavily, judging from side 1.

	last night, in honor of Valentine's day, we listened to some
	old records (yes, records), just some stuff from when we were
	first getting together.  "Wake of the Flood", "Mars Hotel",
	"Desire".  Great memories.

	so I got to thinking and have lots to talk about and lots to
	wonder about.

	like, who preferred the way that "Here Comes Sunshine" was sung -
	with the "refrain" starting it off, like they sang it when they
	brought it back a few years ago?  Or like they used to sing it
	when it first came out?  I prefer the old way, myself.  Like
	to hear them "warm up" their voices a bit before they try harmonizing
	on that refrain.

	like, who plays records anymore?  I don't very often.  But, do you
	remember the whole ritual involved - hold it by the edges, wipe off
	the record with your handy record-wiper-downer thing, blow the dust
	off the needle!

	I don't know if it's because "Wake of the Flood" was probably the
	first studio Dead album we bought and we were so newly involved with
	eachother and the Dead, but this is my favorite studio album.
	Eyes, Let it Grow, Stella... this whole album has such a jazzy feel
	to it, and I don't like jazz!  go figure!  Probably lots of people
	who like jazz were drawn to the Dead because of this kind of playing.
	That's not where I was coming from...I came from the blues, bluegrass,
	folk, rock'n'roll side...but makes me wonder where everyone else (y'all)
	came from musical-taste-wise... did you get turned on to new directions
	by the Dead?

	anyways, there are no credits (except for songwriting) on the album...
	who was playing the horns?  who sang "Let Me Sing Your Blues Away"
	(besides Donna) - I can't figure out who the male singer is?

    early seventies they played it with a fast Motown groove,
    much different than the more recent slow/funky way. I always
    liked it as a fast tune a lot more. 
    
    Before the Dead I was mainly a Sabbath/Deep Purple kinda guy.

    Last night before dinner one of the kids showed me one of their
    V-Day cards from school, and it was titled "My Funny Valentine".
    This was the perfect queue to play the Jerry + Merl tune of the
    same name Volume II Live at Keystone.  Nice disc!

    Later Timmy asked me if there was tune called "You're Mine", from

    This version is flawless, long, light and smooth.  Noone
    is turned up too much.  The instument volume is low (IMO
    appropriately for UJB), the vocals are turned up.  Drums 
    are very soft.  Jerry's solo is longer than normal, flowing 
    well with a little delay thrown in here and there for color. 
    Vince and Bob are quick in response to Jerry's queues.
    
    I'd give this a 9.8 on the calypso scale.

    I remember back when I was 12 yrs. oldish, and I went with my mom
    to see the Prince 'Purple Rain' concert in Syracuse, NY.  Sheila E.
    was the opening act.  They were doing some crazy things on stage,
    all the time my mom was sucking face with her new boyfriend.  My 
    eyes were glued to the stage.  It was pretty interesting, an amazing 
    concert.

Sheila E...."  Ya had ta be there.  Live on the Double Planet -
great album/CD...

I was really into Hedges about five years ago - an interesting
artist.  Prince never did much for me, though...

    	WOW!  Prince, Purple Rain was my first big concert ever.  I 
    	don't normally like to admit to these things.
    
    	My Father and I went to see the Purple Rain movie and liked it 
    	a lot, so for my Birthday (probably 1984 or 1985) he bought me 
    	a ticket to the show.  I thought it was awesome!  
    
    	I have 3 Prince cassettes.  Purple Rain, 1999, and Delerious.	
    	
    	My favorite songs are "Purple Rain" and "Take me With You"
    	although, I always liked "The Beautiful Ones" ...so true.  

Incidentally, here's a blatant plug for WERS Coffee House - this
is a terrific acoustic morning show...I set my clock radio alarm
to it.  It's community radio - non-commercial, not even PBS, and
run by Emerson College in the Back Bay.  Their programming is
really diverse, so you don't always hear the same kinda thing -
that means that sometimes you'll turn them on and hear stuff you
don't really care for, but once you get in synch with their
schedule, they're terrific.

I can do without the Polka hour, but my daughter gets a kick out
of their children's program on Sunday evenings, and like I said,
the Coffee House is M-F, 6am-11am, and really terrific.

  Actually I hear Prince more as post-funk, or black rock, than disco...
  Kind of a sum of his influences, which include James Brown, P Funk, Jimi
  Hendrix, Joni Mitchell.  I like his guitar stuff best (albums like Purple
  Rain).  IMO he has as much rock potential as anyone around, but appears to
  be frittering it away.  Anyway...

    "Rough Mix", by Pete Townsend and Ronnie Lane.  Heard this out of the
    blue in a music store last week, and then the recent Townsend post in
    here clinched it.
    
    Have you ever heard something that you absolutely loved years ago and
    thought to yourself "why did I ever stop listening to it???"  I guess
    in many cases it's a disappointment when you encounter one of these old
    friends, but a few classics have stood the test of time.  This forgotten

  familiar with the likes of Alison Krauss and Iris Dement.  Gillian Welch
  is kind of like Dement in that she writes her own stuff, some of it with
  an "old time" quality and sense of values...  But with a vocal sound
  that's closer to Krauss.  (She's different than both -- not sure why I
  lump them together.  Guess it's the folk-wunderkind hype...  8)

  The album everyone seems to be talking about is "Revival", produced by
  T-Bone Burnett.  For all its Appalachian bluegrassy qualities, it also has
  electric or larger ensemble cuts that are weird little sidetrips.  High
  lonesome keening 'morphs into reverb-heavy whining.  The front porch meets
  the basement, as I said in my comments in FOLK_MUSIC.

    I've been listening to Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" a lot lately. 
    I'd heard and liked the hits before (the title track and "Mercy, Mercy
    Me") and finally picked up the CD.  It's an extremely powerful,
    although depressing, and personal piece of work.  Gaye put it together
    during a hiatus after his Motown singing partner died.  Berry Gordy
    didn't want to release it at first, but he did and it's regarded as one
    of the best LPs of all time.

funny that.  I've never heard her, or at least that I know of (sometimes
when I'm buying gas and WBUR cuts out, or they're heavy into donation
time, I'll change to WCUW, Worcester community radio, and hear some 
folk that don't get identified till after I'm beyond station range),
But I did run across that note in FOLK_MUSIC.  And I only found 
that by checking out this internal WEB page that shows everyone's
note writing activity.  A little scary that, but I checked in grateful,
and Barnes is the most active noter I think.  Oddly enough, or perhaps not
so oddly, several people no longer here are listed in the top 25 noters,
Phylis(s), Bob Bailey, Slashmon/, etc.  But I was poking in other 
peoples business to see where else they hang out.  Home_brew came in
for a lot, not too surprising.  But I found at least Danielle had checked
out FOLK_MUSIC, which lead me to track that down, and hence found out
the Gillian Welch note, and Jay's reply (hey, I know that name!)
Which may, in the course of time (and money) lead me to check out 
her album.

But, if you liked Gillian, but were not that enthused over Iris,
have you heard Dar Williams yet?

Black Crowes latest - 3 snakes and a charm.  Great disk.
Also,  a 3 song "ep" by them....with an excellent cover of Marley's
"Pimper's Paradise" ... heard it live...better on the disk!

  Actually I am enthused over Iris Dement (and Alison Krauss too).

Francis Dunnery...not familiar with his music, but he was mentioned on the
Genesis newsletter, "Paperlate" As a possible new singer for the band, and he
got glowing reviews from the Genesis fans who know his music...gotta check him
out.

to check out Mica Richards...  i heard her over my vacation...
she was the feature act at the open mic at the plantation
club...  she's a 22 year old piano player with a big voice...
kinda pretty too, if that matters...  some were making 
comparisons to Carol(e?) King...  maybe a little bit...

Who is Dar?

Singer/Songwriter who grew up in Westchester NY, now based out of Western
MA.  Great voice, decent guitar work, amazing lyrics.  Her second album
came out recently, Mortal City.  Her first album, The Honesty Room was
originally put out by herself, but I think was then picked up and
with some additional songs, was re-released.

I haven't seen a lot of changes on this one for a while, but if you've
never seen it before, it has lots of interesting stuff.  

I'm a big fan of Iris, and Nanci Griffith, and the like, but Dar's
currently at the top of that list.  Looks like she's out in 
the Midwest and Canada at the moment.  I'd love to see her
live someday.

  Someone in FOLK_MUSIC observed that predominantly guys seem to go loopy
  over Iris.  Some particular quality (of mind no doubt) seems to be
  attracting 'em...    8)

  Don't know if that's true about the "guy" portion of Iris Dement's
  audience, but I do know my girlfriend and a couple girl <pause> friends
  aren't nearly so taken with her as I am.  I woulda thought songs like No
  Time To Cry and the songs about her dad woulda done the trick, but they
  only "liked" her.
