185.0. "New at this..." by BUNYIP::QUODLING (I'll have some of what Marketing is Smoking...) Thu Aug 22 1991 12:27

OK dead heads, I am a neophyte at this. I was listening/watching VH1
the other night, and heard a catchy tune "I will get by" with an
incredible video of skeletons playing. It just came on my walkman that
I am listening to in the office, and the "Noteworthy CD Catalog" is
    sitting on my desk.

What album is this on, and what is are the best GD albums to buy (And
I'll ignore anyone that says "All of them" for the time being...).

    Thx

To answer your question ... the song is "Touch of Gray", and it's on
"In the Dark". Best albums is a touchy question ... my personal
favorites are "Europe '72" and "Without a Net". But "real" deadheads
prefer live bootleg tapes. If you want to send me mail, I'll bet I can
arrange to get you some truly fine live 'Dead music on tape ... ;^)

The song you heard is called Touch of Grey and is on the In the Dark album.

Hope this helps!

LIVE/DEAD is quite a fine album -- demonstrates the "acid" era of
	the grateful dead quite nicely.

EUROPE 72 is much "toned-down" (music intensity-wise) compared to
	LIVE/DEAD

ONE FROM THE VAULT is very nice. This is a very-well mastered CD
of a 1975 grateful dead concert. The general sound is different
	than EUROPE '72 --

WITHOUT A NET, the Grateful Dead in their current musical format.

LIVE is the only way to go for Grateful Dead music, IMO

Thanks, I was just about to order "Skeletons from the closet", thinking
it was the most likely sounding title. I'll change the order to "IN the
Dark", and put "without a net" in on the next order.

    "Cow is givin' kerosine
     Kid can't read, he's seventeen
The words he knows are all obscene but,
     It's alright!
     I will get by..."

    Love these words!

Europe '72 is certainly worth buying. I think it is one of my favorite
albums, certainly what come to mind as a reaction. When you have to
start thinking of a favorite that's when you give up and just say
    "Good quality tapes".

185.7no new notes ? NO WAY!RGB::SHERREDGive it just a little...Fri Aug 23 1991 02:4010
Well, this isn't the name of an album or the date of a show, but
maybe it pertains to being new at this...
Whenever I enter Grateful, its seems I am always up-to-date. That
is, there are always no new notes. Has something changed? Am I
doing something wrong that others are familiar with? Is this all
some kind of problem here at my end (what I will have to assume if
no one recognizes my problem) ? This has been adversely affecting
    my enjoyment of the conference.

Jon, do a SET SEEN/BEFORE=(put some date in here, or YESTERDAY). That
usually works for the problem you describe.

To restate what the other replies indicated, live tapes (I don't like the term
"bootlegs" because they are 100% legal) are definitely the way to go. Several
of these are available on CD.

My favorites are
One From the Vault (Great American Music Hall, August 13, 1975)
and
Live Dead (Fillmore, I think Fall of 1970)

Other good ones are
Dead Set
Europe '72
Reckoning (also sometimes titled "For the Faithful", I think)

I'm not a really big fan of Without a Net, although I like the addition of
Branford Marsalis on sax on "Eyes of the World"

Then there are literally thousands of shows available on tapes. I only have a
couple of dozen live tapes, but I know of several people that have several
hundred tapes apiece. Of the shows that I have, my two favorites are:

Barton Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 5/8/77
Miami Pop Festival, sometime in 1969 (although I only have about 50 minutes
worth of music from this, I'm wondering if anybody knows if they played any
more, and I'd really love a better quality recording)

LIVE/DEAD was pre-1970, I think '68 or '69

IMO, the most riviting guitar work Jerry has done, especially when played at
volume 11.
