    subdudes are from Boulder Colo. They opened for Little Feat last year
    in Denver's Fiddlers Green. Albums better than them in concert, but the
    "drummer" was interesting....he played nothing but somekind of big
    Tom-tom looking thing, but it sounded rather like a full drum set???

My latest non-Dead CDs...

"Which Dreamed It" by Three Merry Widows.  This is a five member band from St. 
Louis which a buddy of mine manages.  They are outstanding, and play a fairly 
unique style of music the band calls psychadelic folk.  The album can be had 
at Tower Records.  If I had to compare them to anyone, I'd say they're 
somewhere beetween Edie Brickel and R.E.M

Also picked up The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions.  This blues album was recorded 
in 1971 and features legendary blues singer/songwriter Howlin' Wolf backed up 
by Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Bill Wyman, and Charlie Watts.  The CD quality 
is as good as any out there and the music is HOT.

I most recently scored Albert King's "King of the Blues Guitar".

Lots of good stuff on this CD, however, I can't really comment because I have
not listened to it enough (never home these daze).

    I heard the Subdudes the other day on the local radio station.  Neat
    stuff - New Orleans style...the only time in recent memory I've heard a
    tune I liked that included (what sounded like) a tuba.

    Recent purchase of Bob Marley and the Wailer(BABYLON BY BUS) live in

I second that!!!!

I've had Babylon By BUs for a while.  It has to be one of the finer sounding
CDs I have.

Ask my neighbors... they sometimes bang on the wall when Iplay it... so,
i usually take that to mean "turn it up!"

I just given one of Frank Zappa's "beat the boots" CDs (1974 Notre Dame).  
What Frank has done is taken 8 bootleg recordings and released them on CDs
without "cleaning up" the recordings at all.  In other words he's bootleging 
bootlegs.  The quality is marginal, but the gitar is amazing.

$15.00 for the double dead "one from the vault" and $18.00 for the new JGB...

It'll come down eventually....  anyone know how much music is on it ?

    I called Strawberries last nite for a price and was told 24.95 for the
    CD and 19.95 for the Video (minus two songs that the CD has) no tape
    price was given or LPs if they released LPs for that matter. I thought
    the 24.95 was high but I guess thats the sale price ! Ill be getting
    bot the Video and CD (Claptonfreak that I am).......

	Eric Clapton and Friends	-	24 Nights

	I'll start with the packaging, its not so great. The only good 
thing is its in a Jewel box. The art work is different but I would have 
like to seen a real picture of EC and the band(s) for the cover art. 
The booklet is also very sparse for info and pictures (three black and 
white pictures, more reason to buy the video).

	For the normal fan I would guess the list of performers for each 
set of bands is alright but for the obsessed fan (me) its very lacking. 
By that I mean I would have also like to know what night each song was 
recorded. I also just can't believe the blues line up, it must be true but
it just doesn't sound like the three guitarist (Guy, Cray, Clapton) playing
all together on some of the three tracks but maybe thats the mix or my ears.
(a Boot I have from one of the '90 blues show is broken down very nicely 
Clapton played for about 40 minutes, then Cray joined and lead the band 
for another 40 minutes, then Guy joined in and fronted the band for over 
an hour ! I'd like to see this come out on CD :'), to bad Clapton didn't 
like what he heard from the '90 run on tape.)
The big screw up with the booklet (its really not a booklet, its a fold out)
is a typo, the note states track 1-5 are the 9 piece band tracks and tracks 
6-8 are the orchestra tracks (actually there are only 7 tracks on the 
second CD, tracks 1-4 are the 9 piece and 5-7 are the orchestra)

	OK, now song selection, I like the songs on the both CDs but hey
these 2 CDs could hold a little over 140 minutes of music ! both CDs have 
under 54 minutes each :'( thats less then 2 hours, and for $24.99 on sale
I'm sorry but thats not such a great deal :'(. If I were asked what other
songs could have been added to the set........(I float off into dream here)
Layla with the orchestra for one, it would bring tears to your eyes even
if your sick of hearing Layla ! (how do I know ? I also have a boot with
the orchestra, and the concerto for guitar and orchestra is also very 
mind altering) also more Blues would have been great.

	Now let get to whats on the CDs, Badge opens the 1st CD with a
very bouncy guitar,keys,bass, and drum line up, simple and to the point, 
just how Badge should be. Running on Faith is such a fine song from the 
Journey man CD, it is done very well live. White Room heats up the tempo
of the CD with all its raw power. Sunshine of your Love cranks out the end
of the four tracks from the 4 piece band of Clapton,Phillinganes,East, 
and Ferrone. Now the Blues set starts with a very tasteful Watch Yourself
with Eric singing (wonder why Buddy didn't do a verse or two) then Eric's
life in a song "Have you Every Loved a Woman" this blows away the CROSSROADS
6 CD set cut to bits and pieces ( you need headphones or very understanding 
neighbors for this track ! as Buddy might say "Play it so yous can smell it" 
Whoa !!!!! )then a sweet "Worried Life Blues" I swear you can hear God 
tapping his foot to this cut. The final track of the blues set and the 1st 
CD is "Hoodoo Man" which is done with a slightly different line up then 
the other three tracks (note end of review)and gets down right funky with 
the boogie piano and harp, just fine. Like I said before a complete CD of 
BLUES would have been worth $24.99 alone !

	CD 2 starts out with the 9 piece band, Pretending begins with a short
piano tune up into a rock hard crunch, just strait forward. Bad Love heats up
the CD a little with Eric's fine tone (maybe its me but with all those people
on stage it takes something away from the songs strength) other wise a hot 
version. Old Love I don't think can be screw by anything, to bad Cray didn't
add his touch to this track (he co-wrote this song with EC) no telling what
might have happened to this 13 minute track, pure Clapton magic. 
Wonderful Tonight is OK but this should have been one of the cuts with 
the orchestra not the nine piece band, Katie Kissoon didn't add much to it 
for my taste either, this is where Layla should have been put in anyway :').
Now the tuning up begins, The National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by
Michael Kamen swarm in with Bell Bottom Blues, close your eyes and be whisked
away by the strings, and Kissoon really is wonderful here ! Hard Times, the Ray
Charles tune, is nicely done but I would have thought it would belong in the
blues format. The tease for anyone who has heard the Concerto for Guitar and
Orchestra (and wished to see it here) is Edge of Darkness (I thought it was
Lethal Edge of Darkness, even Eric couldn't figure out the name on the boot)
a very haunting song and Eric really sounds so soulful and colors the picture
your mind paints, the song was composed by Kamen and Clapton for a BBC TV 
program, until it kicks in with the power of the 65+ member orchestra and band.
Mind boggling to say the least.

	Well thats it, I might not sound like I like this package but for
a crazed lover of Clapton music I expect a lot but I'm very pleased with this
two CD wonder. I do know that the Concerto with be released but not the live
over 20 minute offering from the Feb. 10th 1990 debut just a studio offering 
which will be very nice anyway I'm sure.

    Looks like I'll have to be satisfied with the BBC tapes (and very
    satisfying they are!). They also missed out on an excellent version of
    "Can't Find My Way Home" with Nathan East hitting some real high notes.
    I bet even Steve Winwood would have been impressed.
    
    I read somewhere (prob the recent Rolling Stone) that the "Concerto"
    debuted in 1991. Hah! It was the second set of the '90 RAH show.
    
    BTW, is there any interest in a tree for tapes of the two '90 Clapton
    shows? I believe all those in circulation around here came from my
    tapes. I could get it going after the Garden trees are done.

    Scott. anywho, I was thinking this morning that Clapton should have
    released a 4CD package with a CD for each band lineup, I would care

    that I am having a hard time deciding if I should get 24 Nights.
    Like Scott Abbot said I will probably stick with the tapes. $25 is

	I checked out the CD at Lechmere's last night.  They have it on sale
for $22.49.  I did not buy it... the content of the CD is pretty standard;
I would have liked to see more "off the beaten track" songs... and, for the
price, I would have liked it to be 2 73 minute CDs!

An EC tree?  Where?! Where?!  Sign me up!

I would prefer to be a branch (have Nak's, will dup! ;),
but would settle for being a leaf!

    	Well, for those of you that are completest, get this CD, why ?
    
    1. DDD
    2. I'm guessing here but maybe 75% of the songs are from the '91 run.
       meaning that some of the songs are not on the tapes you've signed
       up to get. Badge, Watch Yourself, Hoodoo Man are not on the tapes
       and all the blues tracks are from the '91 run I'm sure. Edge of
       Darkness is from the '91 run. Bell Bottom Blues & Hard Time are on
       the '90 tapes but I'm not sure if they are from that show.
    3. The sound is wonderful and it will fit nicely on a 110 metal tape
       for the car and work (thats if you don't have a portable CD player)

The last  couple issues of Rolling Stone have had great covers - the latest 
has Jerry on the cover and a pretty good interview (it's where he made his 
comments about not understanding where all the teenage fans are coming from, 
you really should read it in context IMO).  the one before that has Eric 
Clapton on the cover.  Good interview - he talks about the death of SRV and 
his son and about "24 Nights".  kind of gave me the feeling that he didn't 
have much control over it, other than final editor.  He was asked "why not 
Layla?" and he didn't even know his has never released a live version of 
Layla!  Way too long for me to type in but I'd reccomend readin it if you're 
an EC fan.

Having yet to hear this release I was interested in the comments in .250  
particularly regarding the packaging as, by coincidence, I had just 
received (by post) some info about a 'limited edition'.  The following 
info comes from the promo literature:

    Browsing thru Rockit Records today (to get Neil Young's Arc-Weld - 35
    minutes of bonus feedback!!) I saw a cd by "The Good Old Boys", on the
    Dead's label. Anyone heard of this? I think Dave Nelson was in the
    band, and lots of the tunes were the Old And In The Way style.
    Copyrights on it were 1975 and 1991, and Jerry Garcia was mentioned as
    a guest artist.
    
    Weren't they in the Blues Brothers movie? ;-)

I heard on 'BCN this morning that the Blues Brothers is going to be on
either tonight, tomorrow night or Sat. night (I forget which :^/ check yer
TV guide).

ps.  hey you folks - please don't digress about bands in just any ole note- 
use this one...why not?  I like to look here and maybe think about things 
to buy when I don't have anything in mind (yea sure,  happens all the time,
that I don't have anything in mind).  Especially for new music reviews.

I was checking out CDs the other day and noticed a new one that is a 
compilation of Elton John/Bernie Taupin(sp?) songs done by different 
artists, similar to Deadicated.  Anyone have this or hear any of the 
tracks??  I almost picked it up, but thought I'd try to get a review first.
Can't remember who plays on it.

I've heard The Who doing Saturday Nights (all right for fighting) which
sounded like it shoulda been a who tune.  Kate Bush doing Rocket man is
very good too!  I heard the Hornsby cut and a cut by Rod Stewart....

that's all I heard from it and fwiw the "music reviewers" in the globe
panned it saying the Rod Stewart cut was the best and that the rest
of the disk was pretty much missing the mark.

    If you just want the Kate Bush track, there's an import cd single out
    (at an impost cd single price) of her doing Rocket Man, Candle in the
    Wind, and an instrumental. If I can find one for under $10 I'll buy it.
    
    BTW, I went to a record show Sunday and bought over 20 albums for less
    than the price of 3 cds. Everything I bought was either $1 or $3 (even
    the double David Bowie Live was only $1), and the most I paid was $5
    for a Dylan boot. So, if you still use your turntable these some good
    bargains out there.

    Hey Bob, do you have Roger Powell's Cosmic Furnace?  I've never seen a
    copy of it (fairly rare album) but a guy I work with says it's the
    greatest thing since sliced bread.  I've found some rare Todd albums
    for cheap prices - like a copy of "The Ballad of Todd" (the one with
    him sitting at a piano with a noose around his neck) for only a buck. I
    have the other Runt album but it's a counterfeit.

Yeah,  I have a copy of that,  took me a while to hunt it down and it's in
great condition (as I recall).  Those were the days, I believe, when Roger 
was a demo person for ARP synths.  He used to tour shopping malls and music
stores giving demos :)  Definately showing you what he could do with a 
polyphonic synth (he was doing the touring and 1st solo lp when polyphonic
synths were big bucks and brand new!).

He's got another one called "Air Pockets" that's good too.  While I wouldn't
call either of them the greatest thing since sliced bread - both are good.

It's hard to find those 2 - "runt" and "the ballad of todd r".   Rhino,

disk.

As for the "New York Rock and Soul Review" - well let's just say one of
my least favorite singers is Michael McDonald .... :)  but I do like
what I've heard (even if they do let him sing :)

I bought this one - it has a hard edge to it and at times sounds an awful
lot like Living Color (no kiddin'!).  I like it.

I want to get Achtung Baby - after the last one I wasn't too thrilled.
When I heard parts of this one it made me want to buy it.

John Lee Hooker's last one (Mr. Lucky) is good!! There is a cut on there called
"On the Waterfront" where John Lee and Van Morrison sing together - well that's
the best bit of muisc I've heard in ages - the rest is good too!  Van and
John?  SOULFUL!!! (but just for the one cut).  

I've bought a couple other's over the past month but can't recollect at
the moment...

    Another vote for Achtung Baby and The Sky is Crying.  Never been really
    into U2 but I like this one.  Some great tracks in SRV's compilation remind
     me of the early records - hot stuff! Only thing against is the length
    (<40 minutes) but still worth it.
    
    Bob, I've been thinking about that John Lee Hooker one - now I think
    I'll have to pick it up.

Robert Cray -- Strong Persuader

I recently purchased this (came out a few years ago) and it is nice, mellow
blues with horns at the appropriate minutes.  Easy to listen to.  Would make
for decent background music.


Kenny Burrell --  Guitar Forms

I just got this one 2 days ago and have not had a lot of time to check it out.
From what I've heard, it is pretty nice -- mellow, jazzy, bluezy, acoustic,
spanish, stuff.  A pretty good mix.  This recording was originally done in
1965.  Have to listen to more of it.

If the crowd of people you're expecting is 'mixed', you might also want
to get a reggae album of some sort -- most folks are familiar with Bob 
Marley... Babylon by Bus is very nice.

I'll agree about the easy to listen to part, and it may well be good for
background music, but this album always involves me to the point of singin'
and dancin'.  The title cut is a real grate one (just another notch on my
guitar...)  Good thing I don't have Robert's luck with women, though!

For Marley albums, I'd recommend Legend (a greatest hits compilation)
and/or Uprising, though on Uprising, you may want to program out a tune
called Pimper's Paradise for general party listening!

    what's this like? I almost bought it. I never heard the Flecktones
    but I'm familiar with NGR.

    They aren't at all like New Grass Revival.  Bela Fleck plays banjo,
    usually electric, with a jazzy feel.  The bass player is really
    incredible, as a matter of fact his bass is the dominant instrument in
    many of their songs.  Another guy on keyboards and harmonica, and a
    "drummer" whose drum kit looks like a guitar with synth pads.
    I can't classify their music, other than it's all instrumental and is
    hints at a cross between rock, funk, jazz and bluegrass.  Both albums
    look almost identical, except the second one (Flight of the Cosmic
    Hippo) has a few more things on the cover.
    
    You might hear a tune of theirs tonight on the channel 4 news.  A
    couple of months ago Bob Lobel did his usual Thursday night sports
    goofs spot, and used "Sinister Minister" from their first album for
    background music.  I haven't watched the 11:00 news lately so I don't
    know if he's still using that song.

    I saw a PBS special of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Fleck and the
    Flecktones were there...bet it BLEW some of those hard core BG fans

    Funny, Bela says even when he was with NGR they didn't consider
    themselves a bluegrass band (although Sam Bush still pops un on the
    Nashville Network).  I think they were about as bluegrass as Old and In
    The Way.  A little while ago the latest Flecktones album was #1 on the
    "contemporary jazz" charts.  Stores sometimes have it filed under rock,
    sometimes in folk.  Goes to show how hard they are to classify.
    
    You have to see them live to really appreciate them.  Pretty tight band
    considering they haven't been around for 2 years yet.

Plenty to select from, just that this group is a somehwat, ummm, refined when 
it comes to music ;^)

I'd second (third?) the note on Widespread Panic, the CD I have of theirs is 
great (green and white label).  Sort of an Allman Bros or maybe even Dead 
(kind of a stretch to say this IMO) sound with possible some influence from 
that other band from Athens, GA, what was their name??? 8^)

	Is this the place that used to Ron y Marsha and then became

	If so, I *highly* recommend this place as being totally

If you like those, I highly recommend "One From The Vault" ... you will be

Well went out and got that "New York Rock and Soul Review" over the last
weekend.  It's good!  It's real GOOD!  

The players are Donald Fagan, Bozz Scaggs, Michael McDonald, Charles Brown!!,
Phoebe Snow and I'm pretty sure the lead singer from the  (Young)Rascals
plus maybe another Rascal and a couple others (don't have it with me...).

Anyhow,  Charles Brown is good!  If anyone saw him opening for Bonnie Raitt
a couple years ago you can see he's back and in fine form.  He plays a mean
piano.  

I even stomached Michael McDonald :) and still like the disk (apologies to
all McDonald fans....).

so now,  where *did* you get those shoes?

I got one non-Dead CD for Xmas, actually a CD set - The Layla Sessions.  It's
the one with the Layla album on one disc, alternate takes of some of the songs 
on the album on another disc, and a third disc of nothing but jams (5 
different ones, ranging from 11 minutes to 18 or 20 minutes).  

That third disc has some of the best music I have ever heard on it!!  It has 
easily become my favorite CD and if there was ever a doubt in my mind that 
Clapton is one of, if not *the*, best with an axe that doubt vanished by the 
end of the 3rd jam - it just blew me away.  If I had a time machine one of the 
stops would definately be the studio where they recorded them so I could watch.
The standard FWIW, IMHO, etc., etc. apply...

What a great 4-piece band that was (Derek and the Dominos) - we know what 
happened to EC, but what become of the other three (Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle, 
and Jim ????)?

    I just picked up Planet Drum and At The Edge.  I love that kind of
    stuff, so why did I wait so long to get them?  I'm going to send in for
    the "almost free" cd on the back.  I saw a copy of it the other day and
    it's 70 minutes long with samples from the World series.
    
    I was in Lechmere the other day and I noticed a pile of Richard
    Thompson tapes at the cashier.  I asked her what they were and she gave
    me one, it even had a price sticker of $0.00.  It was a free sampler
    from his last album
    
    Another cool cd I got recently was Acoustic Junction.  I don't know if
    you can get it in the stores, I get it at their show at Johnny D's in
    Somerville.  I still urge everyone to see these guys if they're around. 
    They're from Boston but now live in Colorado.

	I know I have been relatively quiet but this is the kind of thing I

I've listened to it twice and the last 3 tracks should be all over the radio
within the next few weeks (Tears in Heaven is already a largely played track
on the radio.WBCN,WBOS,WZLX,WAAF 4 very different formatted stations play it)

The stand out track is "Don't Know Which Way To Go". IMO

The 1st seven tracks are very nice (don't know how it relates to the movie,have
not seen it yet) bluesy to sweet melodies.

    They want $40 for that set!  You can get it cheaper in England and
    their cd prices are sky high.  For like $10 more you can get the Zep
    box set and get twice as many tunes.
    
    Apparently now that Time-Life owns Warner they're putting the Time-Life
    marketing mentality to cds.  Next they'll probably have the "Alice
    Cooper CD of the Month Club".  Is Muscle of Love on CD yet? Does it
    come with a little pair of panties around the cd?

Like Jamie said, it is just a paired down version of the box set that has been 
out for a while, plus a CD of interviews with Page, Plant, and Jones.  The box 
set even has the same crop circle photo.  Forty bucks is outrageous though, 
especially if you couldn't care less about the interview CD.  Time/Life is 
trying to be sneaky by offering it for 4 payments of $9.99 (hoping people will 
see the $9.99 and think it's some kind of deal).

The box set though is very nice.  Page did a good job of improving the sound 
quality on many of the songs and it also contains a few (though not many) 
otherwise unavailable songs (Hey Hey What Can I Do, Travelling Riverside Blues, 
White Summer/Black Mountain Side, and an interesting combo of Bonzo's Montreaux 
and Moby Dick, maybe one or two more).  But hey, I was a ZepHead before I was a 
deadhead and between vinyal and CD have just about everything they've put out, 
so I guess I'm biased  8^).

Don't think I've seen mention of this yet, apologies if it has been...

My latest CD purchase is the new one from Merl Saunders and the Rainforest 
Band.  It's a live double-CD set titled Save the Planet So We'll Have 
Someplace to Boogie.  Actually there is a type-o on the spine of the CD 
box (it is packaged like OFTV, no jewel box) and "Boogie" actually says
"Boobie"  8^)

Anyway, I've listened to the first disc and it is quite nice, holds up to any 
of the stuff I've heard from Merl.  A really cool Sugaree, very different from 
how the Dead play it, and a rockin' Keepers are personal faves after one 
listen.  It's a DDD set and the sonic quality, while for example not quite in 
the class of OFTV or WaN, is very nice indeed.  I'll type in the complete play 
list below.  I ordered it by calling the record company direct at 
1-800-759-MERL and it was $22 and change, shipping included, and I got it in 3 
days.  Not too bad a deal for a double CD set.  They did say it's available in 
stores though.  Packaging is very nice too, cool graphics on the cardboard 
holder and on the discs themselves, although no where does it indicate the use 
of recycled materials 8^/

    as i said somewhere else in here, i saw merl last sunday nite, good

in all seriousness folks, me and my team is _really_ approaching the snapping
point.  the pressure is very strong... i've been working just about every
w/end since the new year.................................. i had my 40 hrs
in this week by yesturday (weds) afternoon.  by sunday, i'll probably be 
close to having my 40hrs in for the next week.

it is affecting me physically and emotionally... sometimes, my mind doesn't
knwo what to do to get away from it.... it is a weird feeling.  the blues
last night at the bull felt very good for me --- all over.  thanks ronnie.

march 9 we go to field test.  hopefully by then, the pressure will be off,
or, we'll all be headed to the doctor.

I've been where you are .... as recently as last week.  Somehow I think I may
still be there but I decided to look past it.  

It's real important that you take some time for yourself ... even if it's only
an hour ... s-t-r-e-t-c-h that hour and it will give you the rejuvination you
need.  I know what you mean about mentally and physically - two weeks ago I
was exhausted, and my fuse was about the size of one of Grace Hoppers 
nanoseconds.  I snapped at everything, my friends, my cats - even the printer
that wasn't working as fast as I.  That's when I realized I was going to blow 
if I didn't change something.  Seriously blow .... and that's not funny.

Since I couldn't change my workload I had to change the way I appraoched it, 
and regarded it.  And I had to start to focus on the good things, and all that
was getting done rather than all there is left to do.  The bottom line is all
you can do is your best - and if you pressure yourself beyond reason you'll
Never get to your best, even if you do work 35 hours a day.

Sometimes the best way to win a race is to slow down.  Ask the turtle. Take a
day and stay home.  I realize it's impossible to stop working for a day at this
point since your mind is reeling so fast so do a little from your apartment ...
but just about � of what you'd expect to do in the office.  Sleep late, open
all the windows and breathe the fresh air, listen to some music and do work
when you feel like it.  And if you get tired of working then Stop.  Do someting
that will make you happy!   If you don't expect to get too much done you won't
let yourself down ... expect only to relax and to gather the steam for the next
day, the next week.  You may just run out otherwise. 

I am saying this to you and every other stressed out person out there (of which
I know there are a few!) because I know, and I care.  No one wins when you 
loose yourself.

good words Lisa...good words...and I TOO need someone to say that
to me and put some things into perspective for me...my life has
been SO centered around my job since New Year's and unfortunately
my family is bearing the brunt of my stress.

My product is going out to final field test Mar 2 and to SSB at the end 
of March.  I was asked to work fulltime until then  - sure am glad I agreed 
to do it because I'm putting in so much overtime that I'm glad I'm at
least getting paid for 40 hours of it, instead of 30.

Guntis is still working on his brother's house - so is gone from 
Thursday until Sunday.  That means I'm in single-parent mode for more
than half of every week (my hats off to you out there that are single
parents fulltime - WHAT a hard job).

I'm stressed to the max these days...but Lisa, your words hit a chord
for me.  I really do need to look at how much I've accomplished, for
one thing.  And even though I don't have the time, I need to take some 
time for myself more.  I've been able to bend my broken finger more and 
more so I'm able to play the guitar a bit.  I should take more time
for myself...

I won't be making any of the east coast shows this spring.  But I just
recently got some tapes of the Boston run from Deane (thanks Dino!),
and it's been great to have some "new" music to listen to while I
slave away!  That final encore was great...it sends goosebumps up
and down my arms when I hear it cause even though I wasn't there that
night, I felt it was a great farewell to Boston.  When I heard that
Brokedown was the encore, I thought, well that makes sense, that place
is so old and everything.  But when I heard the tape and the whole
song which starts our "Fare you well, my honey...", well, whattaya
think you that were there, was Jer talkin' to us in Boston or WHAT!

thanks lisa for the words... well... here i am, another weekend at work...
i've been taking time out to workout and play my guitar for as long as
my wrists can take it (pain in the wrists due to coding 1000s of lines of
code).  sleep has been good also - i try to get 7hrs...... by 11pm, i'm
so wiped out that all i can do is sleep...... at least i have not turned
to drinking heavily (which could happen because i used to be a heavy
drinker) or other things... just keep the southern comfort away from me! ;-)

thanks to jim rehill for dropping off some new tapes that i'm enjoying
now while cranking away on this lonely, quiet, saturday.

Yes, it was quite a show at the Orpheum, even from way up at the top about 
5 rows from the back wall.  Bonnie Raitt has quite a voice, and she ain't half 
bad with the axe either, which was a pleasant surprise.  Does she have some 
local roots?  She seemed to be pretty good friends from waaaay back the the 
local talent she assembled for the show, who were all quite good but the names 
escape me.  Thanks JC for getting the tix!

Stopped by the the record store yesterday....

Picked up the Radiators - Total Evaporation (haven't listend to it yet), how
does this one compare with the other two from the Radiators- "Law of..." and
"Zig Zag..." ?? 

Noticed a new Mellissa Etheridge album- Has anyone heard any of it???

Can someone recommend a specific Acoustic Alchemy recording???  Heard some on 
the radio and remember seeing mention of it in here, but what's their best 
album??

    I'd keep it.......I only heard it once on KBCO, I think. 
    It just didn't seem to have that PUNCH that I associate with the RADS. 
    But music "grows on ya", and just a once over isn't really a good
    for an opinion....IMO. %^)
    

    Well, I'd like to recommend a couple of new releases I've enjoyed
    lately:
    
    Hypnotic Clambake - (I forgot the title but it's their only cd)
      a Boston-area band with an unusual lineup, some really great
      and unusual tunes
    
    Little Village - another one of those supergroups - Nick Lowe, John
    Hiatt, Ry Cooder and Jim Keltner.  It't not what you'd expect from a
    gathering of greats, kinda low key but it's a real fun album. One that
    will grow on you.  I just barely got it but I expect to play it a lot.

I recorded this - not sure how it came out as I haven't gone back to listen
to it.  It was only about 90 minutes long.  I think there weren't any encores
either - or else the radio didn't play them....It is possible he did 2 sets
and the radio played one.  There was a dull roar in my living room that night
and I couldn't hardly hear the music....

It's a full band; apparently what will tour in the coming months.
I didn't (and still haven't) listen to this thing.

There were some folks at my house that night and they were yacking
(me too) and I could barely here what was played.  

According to a paper, they did a 30 or 40 minute set that really
rocked after the radio broadcast was done.  Hmmm,  save the rocking
for the paying customers??  sheesh! :)

In the beginning was the word. Well, actually, in the beginning was this 
     voice...

No more your average human mechanism for communication than B.B. King's 
     "Lucille" is merely a guitar for playing the blues, nor a Bosendorfer
     is a mechanism for playing "Chopsticks"...

For whatever reason, Mom and Dad Nordine's DNA dished out a mighty package
     in young Kenneth's pipes, the result being a full bore basso profundo
     rumble as hairy as anything west of the Gyuto Monks. Thunder with an
     edge. Something special...

He took his gift to the logical place, the radio waves, beginning a career 
     in the 1940's that extends to this day as "King of the voice-overs,"
     the Voice of Levi's, Tasters Choice Coffee, The Chicago Blackhawks, 
     even Sluggeta Snail Bait, but Ken could not live on snail bait alone,
     and in the late 1950's he developed "Word JAzz", something new.
     Rap before there was rap. Not singing, not talking. "Story telling in
     lyric form with a sense of grooving with the music," is the way he 
     put is once, "recreating the logic of dreams," he said another time,
     "the something that makes it / whatever it is / is outside the
     mainstream/ of show busy biz... 

In 1958 Dot Records put out the first "Word Jazz" album and it floated out 
     into the vanilla blur of Eisenhower's America and all the fringe people
     like `frinstance Jerry Garcia and Dan Healy who were listening to MIles
     Davis and reading Jack Kerouac and digging Lenny Bruce went Ah!

Or Ah Hah!

And Ken stayed in Chicago, made his voice-overs, and Word Jazz became a 
     regular half-hour on NPR, and time went along. When Dan Healy, the 
     Dead's maestro de sound, decided that the 1990 New Years Eve broadcast
     needed a heavy hitter to make it work, he reached out and there was Ken,
     his hair now snowy but the pipes still gleaming, and it turned out to be
     a very fine show. In the spring of 1991 Healy said let's do it again, and 
     threw Jerry Garcia and David Grisman and Jim kerwin and Joe Craven and
     Howard Levy into the stew (with a visit from Tom Waits), and you hold the
     results in your hands.

No retakes, no touch-ups- Voice meets fingers, word meets jazz.

Was it ever great, doing it the way we did, live and no retakes, all of us 
     together there in the Grateful Dead studio (seems like just a day or so 
     ago) with the music and the words telling each of us what was happening
     and why. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would be there for
     real, doing this very special CD that still seems a dream to me. When 
     I think about it something jumps up for joy and goes happy crazy. There
     we were in audio heaven way back in the spring of '91 and now (think 
     I'll pinch myself) what we did is yours to look at with your ears. Thank
     you, thank you, and thanks again to the passionate few who made this
     happen.

Jerry Garcia with all his heart deep into the strings of his acoustic and his
     fingers telling him beautifully where to go and how to get there, and 
     right next to him David Grisman, his virtuosity running up and down the 
     mandolin, as the two of them played be as free as you want to be games
     (your turn Jerry, now yours Dave, and quick as a flash the filigree of 
     the two of them together at once), and fitting fantastically with both 
     of them, close by, was good friend and great talent Howard Levy, who 
     flew out with me from the big Windy City to sit in on keyboards and 
     harmonica, and don't forget the subtle percussive tastes of Joe Craven

     he was, and also paying close attention was thoughtful Jim kerwin, 
     knowing exactly what was necessary on the tall acoustic bass that he
     plays so well. Basic to what Jerry and Dave and Howard and Joe and Jim,
     basic to they were all musically doing, was the sensitive listening they
     gave to the words coming out of me and making my talking come as close to
     a song as it's ever been.

Also thanks and thanks again to Tom Waits, friend and much more, for the two 
     things he sat in with me on, both of which speak for themselves inside.
     What a considerable talent he is.

And a paragraph of praise all by itself for Dan Healy who produced this album
     with what I think you'll agree is and exquisite sense of hearing. He 
     did it with the same understanding of sound and sense that has made him 
     the man who knows how to make a live performance be what it should be:
     vibrantly alive.. Thanks Dan... you're the one... you did it... you made
     this all happen, starting last new years eve in the coliseum in Oakland.

Tom Waits & Jerry!  Hah!

Howard (no relation) Levy is the AMAZING keyboard/harmonica player with
Bela Fleck.

    Just picked up CSNY "4-Way Street" on cd yesterday.  I've been waiting
    8 years for this to finally see the light of day.
    
    First, some new packaging: no cardboard box (yay!), just a
    shrink-wrapped cd.  The jewel case is the normal single cd size, but
    the inside hinges to hold 2 discs (another yay! I don't like the fat 2
    cd holders).  They managed to convert the original album insert into
    booklet form rather nicely, and there's *finally* a track listing on
    the cover!
    
    It's all remixed from the masters, and the editing is much better than
    the original.  Supposedly one of the delays was infinding all of the
    masters.  There's a bunch of new tracks:
    King Midas In Reverse (Nash solo of a tune he wrote while in the
    Hollies)
    Laughing (Crosby)
    Black Queen (Stills)
    Neil Young medley
    
    In all they added about 25 minutes of new material to the set.
    The sound quality is superb - people tended to write off the original
    set as a bad performance, but I think it was just bad mixing. Remixing
    of this set was done by the same guy who cleaned up the Dead's catalog
    (Joe Gastwirt).
    
    Worth picking up.
    
    BTW, how many are saving the Maxell points? 500 points gets you a free
    cd.  You get 25 per tape so that's only 20 tapes.  I finally got one of
    the saving forms and went through all of my blank tapes last night and
    have almost enough for 3 cds.

    but its a great gimmic for us taping deadhead that use Maxell (Bobb
    should know 1st hand :')) I've got over 800 points so far...
    
    each tape you buy has 25 point sticker on the label sheet you peel them
    off the label sheet and stick them on this O-fish-all mail in sheet for
    blank tapes CDs t-shirts head cleaners and if you save lots of maxy
    points you can even go to some tropical Island for 7 days ! you can get
    them from any maxell tape XLII, XLII-S, and I even found them on 8mm
    tapes for my cam-corder (BUGS-CAM(tm))....for rules please read the

Good deal, considering the price really isn't any higher (at least at Spags).

    Yeah, the cd deal is the best.  You can get an XLII tape for 150, or a
    cd for 500.  The tape is worth maybe $2, but the cd can have a value up
    to about $16.  Think I'm gonna try to fill in the holes in my solo Dead
    collection (again).
    
    I wish you could get the o-fish-al forms easier.  They don't always
    come with the tapes (I got them with 3-packs but the bigger packages
    don't have them).  Even got 20 point stickers from video tapes.
    I was giving mine away for a while since I figgured I couldn't get any
    forms, and the promo was running out.  This new promo II is valud until
    the end of '93, so I hope it's going to be more or less permanent.
    Building a cd collection for almost free is better than gettinga pair
    of cheap sunglasses.
    
    I paid $23.99 for 4 Way Street.  I've been wanting to upgrade this for
    about 10 years, ever since I decided the album I got at the flea market
    was too scratchy, but then by '84 cds were coming out so I figured I'd
    wait a "few" years for this to make it.  But the wait was worth it
    since they had to locate and fix the masters.  Better than the hack
    jobs they did on the original CSN cds (wobbly  masters, wrong speeds
    etc.)  Originally you were supposed to get the bonus tracks with a
    deluxe version, so I was envisioning a normal cd and some fancy package
    for twice the price in a pretty box with the other tracks.
    
    Now they should put the first Crosby + Nash album on cd.

We've gotten quite a few free CD's from our MAXELL points.  At the rate
we used to (we've slowed down since then ;-) trade tapes, we were getting
free CD's every 2 or 3 weeks!  Now we've came to the wise realization that
our cash flow is limited 8-).

    ...a very long time ago, when I was in college in Philadelphia, every
    Friday afternoon my next door neighbor in the dormitory used to
    celebrate the onset of the weekend by really cranking up his roommate's
    JBL's with a really fine new blues & bluegrass album by David Bromberg
    called 'Wanted Dead or Alive'...and in particular the last song, the
    'New Lee Highway Blues', a very raucous fiddle tune.
    
    Well, this album disappeared into oblivion, never to be heard from
    again, except for a few cuts that showed up on a Bromberg collection,
    called ("oddly enough" according to David) the 'Best of David
    Bromberg".  Well, folks, it's out on CD - finally!!!  This is the
    album that made me a diehard Bromberg fan - 18 years ago...
    
    This is a truely amazing disc.  It has the finest clarinet solo I've
    ever heard, in the midst of an incredible tune called "Send Me to the
    'Lectric Chair".  It's also got by far, the best version of the old "Kansas
    City" tune ever, and of course David's fiddles...
    
    I found it in the Harvard Coop on Friday afternoon.  It has a rather
    unusual cover - David on top of the Empire State building, King
    Kong-like....If you see it, buy it.

I just picked up the Cowboy Junkies' "Trinity Session" CD.  It is 52+ minutes
of very somber, mellow tunes.  Some of the tunes are sad and lonely, others
are more upbeat.  They also have a cover of Sweet Jane, done very nicely and
slowly.  I'm going through some extremely trying emotional times right now
in my life and I find some refuge in this music.... and, of course, ronnie
earl's music at the sit n bull on wednesday nights.

    The Cowboy Junkies did Sweet Jane on SNL a few years ago.  First
    I'd heard of them and I was very impressed.  Still don't have 
    any of their albums though (don't send as much on music as I 
    used to.)  Friends went to see them with John Prine in Boston
    not too long ago.  I think they had a good time.

  Cowboy Junkies are on of my favorite bands..Trinity Sessions was excellent,
  and their newest album "Black Eyed Man" is just about as good.  In between
  that was Caution Horses which I didn't like at first, but really like now..
  Me and DC and Lydia (she really exists folks) saw them in Northampton in 
  March and they were wonderful...one of the best shows I've seen in a long
  time..

I was surprised at how much energy the CJs had, live ... they can definitely
rock.  I was expecting a live version of their studio sound, with Margot
sounding like she's constantly on the verge of falling asleep ;^) ... no way.
One of the most enjoyable shows I've been to in a while.

    The first Cowboy Junkies album is called "Whites Off Earth Now!!!" It
    was recorded like "The Trinity Sessions" (one stereo mike, no overdubs)
    and sounds similar (though I don't think the material or the
    musicianship is as good). The original release was only in Canada, but
    there was a U.S. issue after "The Trinity Sessions" became a hit.

in Hartford, CT in '84 or so.  Don't really recall the music or the show.

	Are other C.J. albums similar to Trinity Session?  Sometime, I might

    Session.

 Blackeyed man is becoming my favorite..its a little more upbeat, but the same
 feeling throughout.  The Caution Horses is also quite good, but takes some
 listening for it to settle in.  I listened to it for a year or so before I
 decided I like it.  Also, their first album (originally released in 86 I think)
 called "Whites Off Earth Now" is a nice bluesy thing..I'm not sure if I really
 like it though.



 I have a boot of a show they did at Berklee (?) a few years ago that's kinda
 nice, but would like to fine more. I know they're around.

    Went into my favorite record store to pick up some new releases I've
    been waiting for:
    
    Bela Fleck & the Flecktones - UFO Tofu
      yet another way cool title with wayer cooler cover graphics
      my choice for album names was Intergalactic Cheese, but this was
      close
      Good tunes like "Bonnie and Slyde" (Bonnie Raitt gave Bela a slide
      and he's been learning slide banjo)
      "Life Without Elvis"
      "The Yee-Haw Factor" - Bela has a story about when he was with New
      Grass Revival, they'd go to these really hick bluegrass festivals
      because they were too often booked as a traditional bluegrass band
      which they weren't, and there'd be cardboard signs written in crayon
      saying "bluegrass festival", and Sam Bush's saying was this this
      place had a yee-haw factor of 10
      "Sex in a Pan" - dunno about this one but it was written by Victor
      Wooten so I bet it's an amazing bass tune
      anyone who *still* hasn't heard or seen these guys is really missing
      something
    
    The Eric Clapton unplugged cd is delayed another month :-(
    
    And since my favorite record store didn't have the other thing I was
    looking for I went across the street to Newbury Comics and picked up
    the new Donovan box set.  Yeah, I already have all of his albums, cds,
    45s, imports, you name it, but there's actually stuff on this I've
    never heard.  Cool demo recordings from 1964! Early versions of great
    tunes! Unreleased stuff from the "summer of love"!  They finally listed
    some of the personnel of his early tunes, some I already knew line
    Jimmy Page did the solo on SUnshine Superman, that "Hurdy Gurdy Man"
    was really the first joining of Page, Jones and Bonham.  But - Suzi
    Quatro (remember her? I thought she was cool) on "Barabajagal", Grahan
    Nash and Mike McCartney on another tune, and Alan Holdsworth also on
    Hurdy Gurdy Man.  Also says he's gearing up for a new studio album and
    tour.
    
    Now, just to make you feel old - he's a grandfather.
    
    Next neat release looks like a double Yardbirds set at the end of the
    month with lots of the later Jimmy Page/Jeff Beck material.
    
    Also, part 2 of the live Allman Brothers set should be out soon.

Phil C. is an ok musician;  i'm turned off to him because he is the epitome
of "pop"/"materialism" in the music industry... musicians like P. Townsend have
a bit more talent, imo, then phil, yet they are not near as popular.

in short:  He sold out.

    So Clapton sold his song for a movie soundtrack.  So what?
    What does that have to do with "artistic integrity?"  
    Musicians have to pay the rent, too.   And this way,
    more people have to listen to it (I am so tired of
    hearing that song! :-).

    Donovan said the grandchild was the child of his daughter Orion (or
    something like that).  All of his kids (except his stepson who is Brian
    Jones' son, and his son Donovan Jr) have cool stellar names.
    
    The box set comes with 2 books, one of photos with hand written
    captions by Donovan, the other is cd size with all the personnel
    details and several writeups, one by Donovan where he thanks everyone
    that had an influence on his career, one by Derek Taylor and a third
    one.
    
    The sound quality is really remarkable, but there are several tracks
    where they used mono mixes and I know stereo mixes exist, and they used
    the shorter versions (and mono) of Sunshine Superman and Season of the
    Witch where there are longer and in stereo on his Greatest Hits album.
    But if you buy them both, plus the "Catch the Wind" cd (excellent
    remastering of his early stuff) and the really hard to find British cd
    called "The Trip" (I found only 1 copy in London, even though it's a
    recent release on EMI none of the major London stores had it) that has
    some really obscure cuts, you'll have a big chunk of his work.
    
    Anyhow, listening to it last night I heard lots of tunes I haven't
    heard that much, mainly because they're from more recent albums that
    get overlooked.  Great choice of material.
    
    BTW, Donovan now lives in Ireland.  He lived in California for a while
    (once met someone at the Club Casino who lived next to him), but opted
    for the more peaceful life.  He says even Scotland is too crowded for
    his tastes.

i have to agree, i don't see what a movie soundtrack has to do with artistic
integrity

one of my favorite instrumental CD's is the soundtrack to the movie Birdy, by
Peter Gabriel; although it is the most expensive CD i own measured by dollars
per minute (it's only about a half hour of music, but as an import it will 
probably cost you more than $20)

    He wrote that he was getting ready to order Donovan/Buffy tickets for 
    a Berkely show in 1988.  He asked if anyone else wanted tickets ... 
    the first time we met in person evolved out of discussions about how to

    re-write it, but my basic statement was that I don't care if he sells
    his songs for movie soundtracks, but I don't understand how he could
    sell that particular song ("If I Saw You In Heaven," I think it's
    called).  I don't see how he could part with something so personal, not
    to mention associating it with an entirely different set of images in
    the film.  I won't get into what I think of alcoholics selling their

    Oh, man...I watched the UNPLUGGED, and "The Circus Left Town" is a
    BEAUTIFUL song.  I absolutely loved it.  The beat was even almost kinda
    like a circus.  You know...in that strange sort of way.  But it's an
    absolutely beautiful song, and I'm going to buy the UNPLUGGED release
    just for that.  Though there are a lot of other good songs on it, too!

    Hmmm...well...I like the bluesy version of Layla just because it's
    relaxing. :)  I used to like "Tears in Heaven" until it was severely
    over-played. :)  Hope they don't ruin "The Circus Left Town" that
    way...  I hate when songs get TOO much air play and people start
    getting sick of them...  Perfectly good songs can get ruined in your
    mind that way...
    
    Oh, I think Clapton is God, too. :)  I like the original "After
    Midnight" better, I must say.  And I like the "Wonderful Tonight"
    recorded version better than the one on 24 Nights for some reason.

    ACTUALLY - since we ARE talking about EC and Layla .. this won't
    really be a degression :  When I saw Eric at the Metro in 1986 (?) with
    1499 other people (an intimate group), he was recovering from dealing 
    with a kidney stone and he sat through most of the show.  I saw him do
    'Layla' unplugged that nite...what a thrill.  actually - just looking
    at him is a thrill .. BUT  i digress  :-)

I love the acoustic version of Layla.  I got a bit sick of the electric version
we're all familiar with - especially the end with the piano.  I have gotten
into the habit of turning off the song when I hear it on the radio (don't feel
bad, I do it to a lot of songs).   It's a great song, don't get me wrong. 
Right now I prefer the unplugged version because you can hear all the chords
nice and sweet.  The "blue notes" he adds in passing between chords is very
chilling.

I've also been turning off Tears in Heaven not so much becaause of the song but
for what it was written for :-(.  If I want a little more upbeat tune like that
I'll play Wonderful Tonight.

EC reminds me of my 'ex'.  We were "together" for 4 years, but
were best friends for 6.  She was a total EC-freak.  I was a big fan, but
I definitely didn't realize his 'god'-status 'til I became friends with her.
We both saw our 1st 2 EC shows together...we would listen to the Layla CD all
the time (that and American Beauty were my absolute FAVORITE things to listen
to on  weekend mornings).  Before I owned a CD player, whenever I would stay
at her house (even when we were just friends) her parents would always play
that CD 1st thing on a weekend morning (we used to party with her 'rents all
the time). That's how I realized that it was awesome morning (read "hangover")
music.

And Wonderful Tonight was a song that was a very integral part of the
transition from being friends to being "together".  (gee, isn't that orignal,
having WT as "our" song... :-) ).

In a nutshell, EC tends to remind me that I lost my best friend.

Ah well...As the old saying goes...Shit happens.

    Good point, I was too wrapped up in trying to "pause" through the
    commercials that I didn't really pay much attention to what he said.
    
    In truth, I don't really care that much about this, I mostly just
    wanted to start a good discussion before we rename the conference

Circus Left Town _was_ on the original broadcast.  He intro'd it by saying it 
was directly about his son since the last night they spent together was at the 
circus.  Maybe they are including a studio version on the CD??

Rollin and Tumblin will be nice to have uncut...

    o-fish-al-lee....and there should be a track or two that was not on the

    They mentioned the contents ina Rolling Stone a few issues back.  Lots
    of album cuts, a few singles, some unreleased stuff (which has
    circulated on boots), a few live shows (the Roxy '76 for one).
    Pretty much the standard box set formula.  I'll try to look up the

Yes, it does pay to shop around for CDs, or anything that matter (BTW, does
anyone know who sells NAK equipment at the _best_ prices in the Boston area?).

Anyways, noteworthy does mail order only.  UPS deliveries.  If you live in the
MA/NH area, you'll typically get the cds in a few days (1-2) !

    A little more info about the Bob Marley box set:
    
    It will be a 4-cd set called "Songs of Freedom".  Island (or more
    likely Tuff Gong, Marley's Jamaican label) plans to make 1,000,000
    copies available worldwide.
    
    The box will cover his entire career, from 1962 Jamaican singles to
    1980.  The packaging will resemble a cloth bound book with the 4 cds
    sandwiched around a 64 page book.
    
    Some highlights:
    
    a 7 song acoustic medley from a session where Marley was trying to
    teach Johnny Nash some of his songs
    
    No Woman No Cry - The Roxy, LA, 1976
    
    Why Should I,  Iron Lion Zion - unreleased songs from the early 70's

Oh Gawd :-) - I wonder if its anything like the drunken jam session Cash 
did with Dylan in '69 ('68?), the only salvagable tune from which was
"North Country Fair".  After Dylan leading Cash through some Dylan tunes,
Cash leads Dylan through Cash tunes and old country standards,like : Good 'Ole 
Mountain Dew ("well my ole Uncle Mort, he's a hellava sport, he stands about
five foot two.  He took a snort, now he isn't so short, that good 'ole 
Mountain Dew!"),  Crazy Love (the Van Morrison one _not_ ! - "you can pass
my house, you can pass my hive, but you won't get past my 'forty-five!!!"),
Big River (Dylan does turn in a great vocal here), etc.

I have this insane mental picture of Marley and the Man in Black sharing
a big spliff, and Cash trying to get Marley to do reggae version of country
tunes!!!  :-)))

    The release date of the Marley set has been moved to next Tuesday,

    Picked up the live Tull acoustic "A Little Light Music".  Lots of tumes

    Dunno - I'm at work and my cd player is at home.  The acoustic stuff I
    heard from their radio station tour last summer (anyone have tapes?)
    was excellent, just Ian, Martin and Pegg.  "Rocks On The Road", from
    their last studio album, was great.  This album was recorded throughout
    Europe and the Middle east last May, with Dave Mattacks on drums. 
    Based on the other stuff I've heard I expect it to be nothing less than
    amazing.
    
    I think Ian is pushing Tull into more acoustic music, with them
    cruising through middle age they want to slow down a little.  Suppose
    they do get sick of playing Aqualung after 21 years (and Aqualung is
    not on this disc! :-)
    
    The tracks seem to cover everything from the early stuff (A New Day
    Yesterday) up to the last album, with some songs they rarely do live,
    like "One White Duck".
    
    BTW, does anyone know what the square with red and white triangles
    means?  They're putting it on a lot of cd boxes these days, wondering
    if it has something to do ratings or censorship.

    Great album -- very much Peter . . . going more towards his "spacier"
    style which he uses on a lot of well known tunes on the "Plays Live"
    album, making them even better!  
    
    Only got to listen to it half asleep last night and this morning, so
    I can't put in a full review yet.  Maybe Chris will . . . he

    Well I am a so so (yes a pun) Pete fan....after hearing most of it over
    the weekend on WBCN (they played most of it last weekend) I had to buy
    it ! and yesterday I was in the store getting Julie a tape of that rap
    group Cris-Cross, and when I was slowly heading to the front desk to
    pay for it I was pulled by a force of unknown origin to the new release
    section and noticed the neet packaging of Pete's CD (none, yup just the
    Jewel-box in a anti-theft duehicky thing-a-ma-bob....) well I had lots
    of money in my pocket (why is it when I go into a music store, I seem
    to have lots of money with me ?) so I bought it ! I like it very
    relaxing some very cool sounds but it needs lots more listening to give

I love Peter Gabriel. So far the only thing I've heard off the new disk is 
"Diggin In The Dirt" and I think it is great.  I can't wait to get this CD 
but will have to at least for a little while.

I've also hear that the 10,000 Maniacs CD is also excellent, though I 
haven't heard anything off of it yet.  Yet another one for the wish list.

Grate album, Scott.  One of my favorites, too.  I always
thought they went downhill after Lamb Lies Down on Broadway,
but I guess I'm just dating myself (which is actually illegal
in most southern states ;-)!

    I *LOVE* their second album "Tresspass".  Unfortunately it's their only
    album not available on CD in the US, probably because of who owns the
    rights to it.  Great stuff like "Looking for Someone", "The Knife",
    "Searching for Angels".  It's almost more early ELP or King Crimson in
    style than Genesis.
    
    Occasionally it's seen on import, and really worth getting.

Its "Rael", which is "real" spelt sideways. I did a thirty page thesis on 
this album for a philosophy class. Your Boy wouldda been rilly pissed to find 
his name misplelt, rfb!  

Fun evening: Drop a dose, read through the album cover story, then play the 
whole album, following the lyrics on the album sleeves, and try to figure it 
out. rereading/relistening to some cuts may be required.

    There's some great Enossification on that album too.
    
    Eno makes a guest appearance on the new PG album.
    I think PG should go back to having untitled albums. It gave them all a
    unified look.  I usually give them numbers or describe the cover to
    tell tham apart (blue car, melting face, etc).  I even blacked out the
    "Security" title from my cd since he didn't give it a title (on the LP
    the "title" was a throwaway sticker on the shrink wrap, hence the first
    disposable album title), so it fits in with the first 3.
    
    Anyone have the Deutsch version of III?  I see it occasionally and
    think it would be a cool album to listen to and not understand a single

    yeah, i have the german version of Gabriel III; i used to listen to it
    so much freshman year at school that i thought the album sounded
    strange when i listened to it in english; i've also seen II and
    security in german; another gabriel album that's really kind of neat is
    birdy (soundtrack to the movie by the same name); all instrumental;
    it's probably the most expensive cd per minute i've ever seen; only
    about 30 minutes of music, but it will probably cost you about $20
    (it's an import); i really ought to go out and get passion (that is the
    title of the soundtrack to the last temptation of christ, right?); and
    of course, pg-era genesis is also amazing; am i rambling here?

    Anyone else catch Sinead O'Conner on Saturday Night Live?  It's tough
    to be shocking these days, but she managed.  If you missed it, she did
    a Bob Marley song a capella and tore up a picture of the pope over the
    lyrics "fight the real enemy."  The audience greeted this act with 
    d e a d silence.  Pretty funny.

    re: misspelling names...nah, I've always been a lousy speller and
    intentionaly misspell words for the effect, like RAE instead of RAY
    for a middle name, and RAEANNEN for another middle name...and Kady
    and Arrtie, and Tumbeldown...etc.

Wasn't she pissed at NBC for inviting Andrew Dice Clay on the show a few months
ago?  She said she would not perform if he was on (hoping they'd cancel him)
but he was and she dropped out?  This was also tied to Jan Hooks (and Nora
Dunn?) leaving the show for the same reason.

If this is true, I'd take her performance on Saturday as her parting shot at
NBC.

From reading interviews (in the past) with Sinead, I've gotten two
impressions about her ... she's angry, and she likes to shock people.
Hey, both can be useful in the right circumstances.

I saw her do a show last year at Great Woods ... I was dragged there
almost kicking and screaming, but wound up loving it.  IMO, she
sings great, really belts out the tunes and has a lot of energy.
Puts on a good show ....

	She missed her que on the second verse, and then just kinda
	sat there like she had forgotten what to sing, this is not 
	on the video, but is on the radio broadcast.  By far the worse
	error of the show.

    I thought the worst error of the show was when the sync track
    discombobulated and they had to stop the show and back everything up.

    BOP(harvey) has three CD's. The first, Bread and Circuses, was released
  in 1989 and got fairly good airplay on the alternative radio stations such
  as WFNX. This is still their best recording in my opinion. Also out is a 
  live recording called "The 8x10 Bootleg", and their new release, "Gitchee
  Gummee to Me". The first two are available at most of the club shows. BOP
  is ten times better at a club gig than their big stage performance this past
  weekend, you definately gotta check 'em out. i beleive their only other MA
  gig this month is at nightstage in cambridge on thursday, oct. 22nd, but
  definately double-check cuz they've been jugggling around their schedule
  this month. they should have some discs there. (club gigs are two 50 min.
  sets, usually beginning around 11pm.
     also i wouldn't call them funk, i don't know what i'd call 'em.
    they've been called SKA (whatever that is) and world beat, but
    i think they're a reggae-ish rockish band with horns 8-).

been to more phish shows that I (a mere 1, boo hoo) is probably going to tell 
me there is something better. And please do - IS there a better phish CD than
Picture Of Nectar, because I really really like Picture Of Nectar.

I also have a Blues Traveller CD (the only one?  either that or the first).
I like it, but I definitely like the Spin Doctors CD (Pocket Full of
Kryptonite) much better!!

One more thing I forgot to mention.  You can get tapes of Junta for $8 (last
I heard) at a show.  Next show 30 October, at the Garden.

If you're really jonesin' you might be able to talk me into making a tape of
my Junta tape -- but that would be unethical unless you PROMISE to go out
and buy the CD when it comes out (which, BTW, will have 40+ minutes of bonus
tracks to round out the 2-disc set!)

    The first Blues Traveler is called "Blues Traveler".  The second is
    "Travelers and Thieves".  There's a bonus edition in the stores with a
    live EP recorded on tour with Santana (Carlos is on the EP too).  Wish
    they would sell it separately since I already own the album.
    The first album has "Crystal Flame", my favorite tune of theirs.
    
    You also might want to check out Widespread Panic, for more along the
    same style.  Newest is "Widespread Panic", and their first "Space
    Wrangler" has been reissued with a bunch of new tracks.

    IMO- Both of Phish's CDs are excellent, but I prefer Picture of Nectar.
    The Spin Doc's "Pocket Full of Kryptonite" is the balls. The drummer
    and bass player GROOVE. Lotsa funky rhythms. They also have a live
    EP/CD which I've heard but am unfamiliar with.
    Blues Traveler is great. Don't let the name fool you though- very few
    "blues" tunes. But they smoke."But Anyway" would be my favorite (if I
    had to pick one: they're all good) of the first CD. "Optimistic
    Thought" and "Mountain Cry" (w/ Greg Allman) off the 2nd CD.
    
    I'm rambling cuz I LOVE all these CD's...
    All are highly recommended. But first, I'd go with the Spin Doc's or
    BT's first. (unless you can get the 2nd with the bonus...20 minute
    "Mountain Cry with Carlos! :-)

Thanks for the offer, but I think I can wait for the CD - no need to push 
the bounds of proper ethics  ;^)  I can't make the 30th show but I'm sure the 
tape and/or CD will make it to my hands eventually. 8^)  Sounds like Junta will 
be a double CD set so unfortunately it won't be available using Max-points 
(they don't allow mutliple CD sets).

PS - I got the Spin's CD at City Hall Music on Main St. in Marlboro for $10.90 
     regular price, which seemed pretty cheap to me (it's $10.53 through 
     Noteworthy).  I was actually surprised at their (relatively) inexpensive 
     prices on most of the CDs they carry.

    Want a bargain?  Disc Diggers has the Widespread Panic CD for a mere
    $1.99.  They also had Solar Circus for fairly cheap ($3.99 or so).
    Didn't notice any Phish or Blues Traveler, but the place is so huge you
    never know.
    
    They're right off Davis Square in Somerville, a couple of blocks from
    the Somerville Theatre.
    
    Oh yeah, I got the new Devonsquare cd for 99�.  It's a little more rock
    than their earlier stuff.  Also Steve Forbert's latest (The American in
    Me, and excellent album) for 1.99 and the latest Golden Palominos (with
    Richard Thompson on lead guitar) also for 1.99.  Great place to spend
    your hard earned bux.

    A video of the band live at Great Woods (in Mansfield, MA) on the same
    tour that yielded the new live album.
    
    "The Fillmore Concerts" a two-CD two hour plus set on PolyGram.  Not
    sure what it contains (guess:  all of "Fillmore East" plus whatever
    else was left off that set in the first place).  This is part of a new
    reissue series from PolyGram that includes two sets from John Mayall,
    some Rod Stewart, etc.

    "The Fillmore Concerts" hit the stores yesterday.  You get all of the
    original Fillmore album, plus extra material that later appeared on
    "Eat a Peach" and "Dreams".  It's all edited back together, remixed from
    the original masters.  It's not a box set, just a 2 cd set with a nice
    dust cover and booklet, I paid $23.99 for mine at Rockit ($22.?? from
    Noteworthy).
    
    I saw the Mayall sets, I was disappointed that they didn't include the
    original version of "Room to Move", which was his first single.  They
    chose the '69 remake instead.  The original version has yet to appear
    on any album I've seen (vinyl or cd).
    
    Next week: a 3-cd Jefferson Airplane box set called "Loves You",
    supposed to feature 50 cuts, with half unreleased.  Noteworthy lists it
    for about $30.  And in 3 weeks: a 4-cd Monterey set (will they include
    the Dead?) that probably won't be as comprehensive as the '88 radio
    broadcast, since the boot cds of that show take 5 discs.  But it will
    include a nice big books of pictures that were believed to have been
    lost, but they just found the negatives.  I'd expect a hefty price on

	Scott, What's the orginal version?  Is the '69 remake you refer to the
one with the "there's a bit hoochie coochie in this one" stagetalk line at the
beginning that appears on "The Turning Point" LP? 

I thought "The Turning Point" was earlier than '69, like 67 or 68...

    The original version was recorded by the first Bluesbreakers lineup, in
    '63 or '64.  It was issued as a single but I've never seen it on an
    American lp.  Haven't seen enough Mayall imports to know if there's a
    compilation containing it.  Plus when I saw him a few years ago he
    introduced it as "my first single", and if it was available only on
    "Turning Point" (I believe '68-69) that was way too late to be his
    first single.

From memory,

It's a two CD set, and it says on the jacket that everything they played in the 
Fillmore shows used to record the original Fillmore East album is there.  Also, 
they took the original tapes and made a digital master of them, so I assume 
this means it was remastered.

Most if not all of the stuff has been released before, either on the Fillmore 
East album or subsequent releases (Eat a Peach, Dreams box set) except Liz 
Reed, which is a compilation of two Liz Reed's (how this was done is pretty 
well explained in the little booklet by I think Tom Dowd, who I think produced 
it).  Sound quality is as good as any CD I have ever heard, i.e. excellent.

Disc One has has about 7 or so songs, including Statesboro Blues, One Way Out, 
Liz Reed, Stormy Monday, Trouble No More, and I can't remember what else.

Disc Two has Hot'Lanta, Whipping Post, Mountain Jam (entire), and Drunken 
Hearted Boy.

The booklet that come with it explains the album, the shows from which they 
came, and has some good pics of the band on stage.

    complete shows on 2 cds.  I also wonder how much they edited it (the
    original AFO has some cuts and splices).  guess I'll have to buy it and

    They claim this is unedited, i.e. all the stuff they cut out between
    the songs is back in there.  It's mostly from the March (12 or 13?)
    show, with one song from the closing of the Fillmore show and the
    previously mentioned edit.  The source for each song is listed on the
    cd.
    
    These cds are full - about 70 minutes on each.  Also comes with a nifty
    photo book and a slip case.

    The new Allmans set is roughly $25, less from Noteworthy, more from
    mall type stores.
    
    "Rock of Ages" was redone on 2 cds a couple of years ago.  It's an
    amazing bargain - about $11 for the set, same price as the original
    chopped down single version.  At first I thought it was a misprice, but
    it's that price everywhere.
    
    Just saw that Polydor has reissued a bunch of Elton John cds. ?? I
    thought he was with MCA since the dinosaurs roamed??  They say
    remastered from the original British tapes, with all the original
    artwork and lyrics.  This time they put all of Yellow Brick Road on one
    disc.  There's about 16 in all, figures they do this after I've bought
    most of the classic (pre-76) titles I want.
    
    Oh, just got the Airplane box.  Great price (about $30, not bad for a 3
    disc set), excellent book with lots of blurry color photos, and lots of
    unreleased tunes.  It looks like they included a complete (or nearly)
    show from the Fillmore in May '67.  One tune called "Would You Like a
    Snack" was done with Grace fronting the Mothers of Invention.

Great stuff!  4 packed disks.  It comes in the style of a "book".

James McMurtry's 2nd lp.  Need to listen a bit more but he's dropped the guitar
  and sings/writes for a living...too bad he's opening for ahem, Joan Baez
  or I'd be there...I can sleep at home :)

yesturday, i went into boston to tower records to get some cds.  after much
laboring, i ended up with:

	- Elmore James CD, a blueman from way back.  

	- Luther Johnson Jr cd - he is now boston-based;  he plays around
	  at the local clubs, the bull included.  awesome voice.  great
	  band.  titled "Luther's Blues"

	- Paul Rishell - country bluesmon.  he opens up for Ronnie on 
	  wednesday nights.  good cd - about 65% acoustic and the balance
	  electric.  titled "Blues on a holiday"

	- Wes Montgomery Trio - a jazzmon from the 40s, 50s, and early
	  60s.  wes plays guitar (never uses a pick), he's got an man
	  on organ and one on bass.  good music to kickback and read to.
 	  titled "A portrait of wes".... he died in '64, i think.

BTW - for the mainstream CD selections, noteworthy beats Tower on price by
a couple of bucks PER CD ...  noteworthy just doesn't have the selection
Tower has...

oh, i also had a guinness at the "littlest bar" and a slice of pizza....

 Picked up Hot Tuna's new live album (Live at the Sweetwater) after hearing
 it at my brother's Two Floors of Fun (tm) thanksgiving blowout (as opposed to
 the traditional New Years Four Floors of Fun (tm).  Haven't quite heard the 
 whole thing yet, but I love what I've heard.



 And, at the recommendation of Mr Bob White picked up the latest Rory Block..

    on WERS this morning on my way in...  i tried to catch the artist but 
    i missed all the names...  i do believe i heard David Grisman mentioned
    though...  sounded like him too so mebbe it was...  much slower than

I got Great Deceiver for my birthday and I'm no longer complaining
about it not having any material from the earlier King Crimson bands.
(Actually, it has Peace - a Theme and Cat Food and more material may
come later.) I'll post the entire song list in the next reply.

This box set is a Crimhead's wildest fantasy come true. Imagine Robert
Fripp sifting through his personal collection of live King Crimson
tapes from the Bruford, Wetton, Cross, Fripp era, selecting his
favorites, and making them into FOUR disc box set! I would have been
blown away by two or three discs. Four is simply amazing.

Some people might wonder why anyone could listen to that much live
Crimson, particularly when several songs are repeated. The answer is
that King Crimson (longevity aside) was a lot like the Grateful Dead
in that they played group improvisation, experimented with their
music, and took a lot of risks on stage. No two concerts were alike.

If you stop and think about it, there are very few rock bands that
ever succeeded at (or even attempted) group improvisation. Most of the
improvs that you hear are solos. That's a lot easier. It takes a very
special talent for a group to play music that's totally spontaneous
and have it sound coherent.

Anyhow, as Vinny reported a few notes ago, the sound quality is
superb. Fripp obviously took a lot of care in transferring these
recordings to the compact disc format. According to the book that
comes with the box set, he was really ticked when the record company
did such a lousy job with the initial transfer of the albums onto CD,
and then deducted a large sum from his royalties for the shoddy work.
That's the reason for the "Definitive Editions" that came out later.

Like the Young Person's Guide and Frame By Frame (the other box set),
the book contains a wealth of information and photographs. This one
has excerpts from Fripp's diary, extensive reviews of Frame By Frame
(both good and bad), and other writings by band members that convey a
real sense of what it was like to work in King Crimson. I particularly
liked Fripp's description of his conversation with John McLaughlin,
the great guitarist of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, after their combined
concert at Cape Cod Coliseum. (I was at that show but had to leave
because the music was too loud, the atmosphere too hot, and the
audience too drunk and rowdy for my girlfriend.)

I only wish that Fripp hadn't waited 20 years to release this
material. I would have loved to have it back when I could play my
stereo at concert volume. That's hard to do now that I have a wife who
likes classical music and a three-month-old daughter. King Crimson is,
and has always been, music that should be played LOUD! A while back,
probably in an earlier version of this notesfile, someone asked what
people would play if the twin towers of the World Trade Center in NYC
magically turned into stereo speakers. There's only one answer that
comes to mind for me: King Crimson at maximum volume. Larks' Tongues
Part One. Or maybe Fracture.

I suppose I'll have to be satisfied with taping it and listening on my
Walkman as I walk the dog to the park each morning. People I pass
probably wonder what kind of awful noise is coming out of my
headphones. I just smile.

    Just picked up John Mayall's new CD titled "Wake up call". If you like
    the blues this is a must. It features the Blues Breakers, w/ guest 
    appearances by Buddy Guy,Mick Taylor and Mavis Staples..  Theres 14 songs
    on this CD.
    
    I didn't even have to gives this a chance, loved it from the start!

     	I was out at Spag's last night buying some things for the 
     house, but not wort chiller since I don't brew yet. I the school 
     house they are selling some CDs, many of which I don't think I'd 
     want to get near. But I stumbled across this one that I decided 
     was worth looking at and then buying. 
     	It's titled "Fleetwood Mac, Greatest Hits Live". I thought, "Hey 
     live, can't be that bad". I read the song titles, only a couple of 
     which I knew, and noticed lots of P. Green in the credits. There are 
     no liner notes at all, ziltcho information beyond the song titles. 
     I'm inclined to believe it's a boot from some time ago, but it's not 
     a bad boot at all. I don't think it's a soundboard because I can hear
     some audience. An introduction by an MC as the band starts presents 
     Fleetwood Mac at the Boston Tea Party. 
     	This is pretty good disk! It credits Peter Green with Black Magic 
     Woman (surprised to me). It opens with Oh Well and also has a song, 
     title I forget, which I know from Clapton's 461 Ocean Boulevard, "I
     get a real good feeling talking to you on the phone". Fleetwood Mac 
     was a great blues band!

     	Does anybody have any idea when this was recorded? When did 
     Fleetwood Mac, with Peter Green play the Boston Tea Party? Where 
     was the Boston Tea Party. 

     I'd guess somewhere around '74

    The Boston Tesa Party was on Lansdowne St. in Boston, behind Fenway
    Park.  It was THE place for music in '69, '70, and '71.  I believe they
    closed in '72.  (I think Axis or some other dance club is in there
    now.)  It was a terrific place.  Sort of like an old garage.  Everyone
    just sat on the floor in front of a 2-foot high platform (the stage)
    and they did psychedelic light shows on the wall behind the band.
    
    The place held a few hundred people.  I saw some great groups there:
    Jethro Tull (before they were big), Allman Bros. (also before the big
    time), a band called Mountain I was fond of in my high school days, and
    others I can't recall.
    
    Lots of fun shows in a small venue.

Peter Green, I reckon, split the Fleetwood Mac scene right around late 1969.
I'd guess that stuff you have was recorded at the Tea Party in 1969.  I have
an early Fleetwood Mac one called "Fleetwood Mac: The Early Years" that was
recorded at the Tea Party in '69.  sounds like the ones we have might be from
the same show or the same run of shows... i'd be into listening to that
one!!

The dead played at the Tea Party a lot in '69 too, including NYE.
I also think bands like Led Zeppelin, the Who, and other soon to be
bigtime bands played there as well.   The Plough & Stars in Cambridge,
famous for their great Guinness on tap, has a lot of the advertisements
for these shows on their walls.   Cool stuff.

Wasn't that a Pink Floyd album?

The Tea Party started out in an old church in the South End.  I saw John
Mayall, Rassahn Roland Kirk, and Joe Cocker (first US tour!) there.  It then
moved to Landsdowne Street (where Avalon is now).

I *saw* Fleetwood Mac at the Tea Party on Landsdowne Street with Peter Green.
It was after Christine (Perfect) McVie joined.  Could this be the same show I
saw?  I don't remember the date...but I do remember sitting within 5 feet of
Mick Fleetwood! :-)

This was all in the days of Lava-lamp light shows, clear flooring with lights
under the floor, etc.

...If only I had known about the Dead then.

Jack Cutler, who notes here occasionally, saw the dead at the tea party in
'69.... he said it was something like $3.50 at the door and they stamped your
hand.  i think he also saw the Who do Tommy there as well.......

    If McVie is on this disk she isn't singing at all.

    Portland, 3/7/93....  WOW!  This band jams!!!!!  
    I cannot wait until August 8th!!!!

			Four words, I Can't Believe It ! 

		This is down right hot, sweet, raw, fun ! While listening 
	to the CD through headphones this morning, I wonder if we will see 
	some film footage from the recording sessions. I want to see Eric
	standing on his tip-toes while blazing through "Five Long Years".

		On the inside cover of the booklet we see some words from
	Eric, 

			All along this path I tread, 
			my heart betrays my weary head,
			with nothing but my love to save, 
			from the cradle to the grave....


	"soul" was the word his use on the broadcast interview instead he uses
	"love" here.....I guess soul was a little too deep for some people.

		I can't pick out one track I like better then any other 
	track, and I don't think I will be finding that track for anytime 
	soon. This release is just to good a body of work to single out one.

		I also find that the reason I can't pick one favorite track
	is because the way this was recorded, live and as it happened. The 
	only dubbing done was to add a Dobro to "How Long Blue" and a drum
	track to "Motherless Child"...thats it, the rest was recorded as if
	you were sitting on a box in the corner of the studio, drinking a
	beer and scratching the head of Sock, Billy or Treacle. At least 
	Treacle looks like he enjoyed the sessions, judging by the silly grin
	he has in the picture from the booklet.

		The total time of this CD is 60 minutes and 20something 
	seconds, 16 songs that influenced Clapton from the day he started
	to play the guitar. Just think what the tour he will be doing to 
	support this release (he could have just done the tour without
	making the record, IMHO) will be like. Here are just 60 minutes
	of 16 songs....it boggles the mind (mine at least) what he will do
	for the rest of the concert ? And not only that, who will be showing
	up a these shows to possible sit in for a song or two...Doing a blues
	show lets this type of ideas seem very, very possible and inviting.

	Well, after many listens I think I have to give it a rest for awhile.

      for an interesting interpitation of "Blues for Allah", check out
    Joe Gallant and Illuminati (a 20 piece jazz band) ...their CD is
    called the "Blues for Allah Project".....there is some real
    mind-blowing jamming going on here....including a little "other one"
    jam in the middle of "Crazy fingers"....goodstuff!

      I strongly recommend a CD called "Classic Hot Tuna Electric" on the
    Relix label...it was recorded in 1971 at the Filmore west and it is
     "smokin'"...!!!  Just Jack, Jorma, Papa John Creach and some drummer..
    $9.99 at newbury comics when you use a $3 off coupon....

I noticed yesterday at Newbury Comix that Bella Fleck has a double
live CD out...the name of which escapes me now.  Doh!
