159.0. "DEADicated" by FORTSC::CHABAN () Mon May 06 1991 17:27

Anyone buy that tribute to the dead album? I just can't bring myself
to listen to Suzanne Vega doing a dead tune...

There's some discussion of the Deadicated album in the "Vault" topic...I, for
one, love Suzanne Vega's tunes on the album, particularly Cassidy, which I
can't seem to get enough of.

the Rainforest benefit fit quite nicely with the boyz style...matter
of fact she should write some tunes for them....ditto for cassady

Is this going to be the official "Deadicated" note? I don't recall if we have
a note on this or if it was a digression.

Anyway, I have not picked up the album yet (I hope to get it special ordered in
vinyl form), but I did hear the Indigo Girls doing Uncle John's Band while
listening to WBOS. I liked their version. They certainly have nice voices.
The only thing I noticed, and this is different from the dead's version, is
that they converted all the 7-beat phrases (a measure of 4 and a measure of 3)
into 8 beats (or two sets of 4). During the first part of the song, the verse
is normally a 4-4-4-3 rhythm but they changed it to 4-4-4-4.

The worst of it comes at the end of the song (after the last occurrance of
"he's come to take his children home", actually the end of the verse). At this
point, Jerry normally does a 7-beat riff, which, when played live, leads the
band into the long jam. This is reduced, by the Indigo Girls, to a simple
4-beat pattern. Oh well. I was disappointed since that is a major
transitional point for me (and the song), and one I'd prefer not to be tampered
with.

The album really grows on ya ... when I first got it I was kinda
lukewarm to most of it. But after a few listens I'm developing an
    appreciation for it.

My favorite cut is definitely Burning Spear doing Estimated Prophet.
What a great adaptation of that tune ... kinda makes me wonder what
they could do with something like Samson & Delilah, or mebbe Not Fade
Away ... I think I'm gonna have to go out and buy some other Burning
Spear album now to see how good their non-Dead stuff is.

awesome. Can't wait to hear Deadicated...

I have to agree with Bob B. - the Estimated Prophet is THE hottest song
on the CD. Also, in listening to Elvis Costello do Ship of Fools, I
felt that he actually could have written that song himself. It's
adaptation fits perfectly into his style. While the renditions are
rather true to form, in my opinion, the only weak spot is Jane's
Addiction version of Ripple. It really grates (no pun intended!) on my
    nerves. C'est la vie!!!

    How about those linear notes!!

I've heard a little of it on the radio. I've herd Jane's
Addictiction's Ripple. I'm not familiar with their music but it
appeared to me that mellow was out of their normal play list.
Second time I heard it I was ready to hear them go into The Other
One as the song was fading.
I've heard Bertha by Los Lobos enough that I think it will get
radio play. My first impression, when I made out was I was listening
to, was that it sounded very much like Bruce Mandaro on vocals.
Did Midnight Oil do a song on there? I think that is the other song
I heard. Warf Rat, that's what I heard. It was okay, but I like the
    Dead's version better.
I have to hear all of this stuff through a few times before I
really know how I feel about it, but I definitely hear The Other
One at the end of Ripple.

I noticed that other one tease at the end too and wished they did it
because those guys can really go with a song like that. Interestingly,

Just showz ya how even though we all love some of the same things, we all have
different tastes as well! I hate brussel sprouts, but I really like Hornsby's
Jack Straw, although the album version doesn't compare to what he did with the
tune at Foxboro last week. The only tune on Deadicated that I could do without
really is US Bluez by The Harshed Mellows. To me it just seems like they are
forcing themselves into playing it. Zevon does a very good Casey Jones, and
for some reason I really like Midnight Oil's Wharf Rat. Overall a very
enjoyable album, IMO.

I think the U.S. Blues is great! Played with a bit more of an edge than

I like Bruce's Jack Straw but can understand what JC meant when he 1st
mentioned that he thought it didn't have the ooomph that it ought to...
Still a good tune.

As for The Harshed Mellows version of US BLUES - I think this is cool!
Gruff and fresh sounding....(like .-1 said gives it an edge).

The only tune I can find myself wondering about (do I like it? not sure)
is the Indigo's Version of UJB. Not sure if I like it or not...so I dunno.

The Cowboy Junkies *know* how to play "to lay me down"!!!!!!!

Speaking of this lp - did you all look at the rose in the middle? The 1st
time I looked I didn't notice ... the 2nd time I looked I saw a bit more
the 3rd time I looked (last night) I was holding the picture in my hand
and rotating it around and around.... *every* rose petal is made of some
kind of animal! :) I looked at the longbox because the cd insert is
sort of miniscule....the lp sized rose ought to be even more revealing.

lots of fun!

So far I have listened through Deadicated once. I really like it, although
there are 2 or 3 songs I could (and probably will) do without. They are
U.S. Blues, To Lay Me Down and (I think) Casey Jones. I absolutely *love*
the Reggae Estimated!!!! and Uncle John's Band. Deal, Bertha, Ripple and
even Wharf Rat are right up there too. Wharf Rat is a funny one, at the
beginning of it I was totally disgusted, "Oh my God how could they do this
to this song!" but by 10 seconds or so later I was liking it more and more.
I have only heard it once so chances are I just don't like the beginning.

I have however played UJB, Estimated, Deal, Ripple, and Bertha over (and over).

Bought Deadicated last night for the ride home .....nice night to drive
around the Quabin Resv. on rte 202......all in all I thought this was
a good tape---the version that brought the biggest smile was Dwight
Yokems version of Truckin...not that this is the best cut but I thought
it was neet and kinda harder driven than the boyz version...Estimated
is superb....its funny about Ripple ..it was the kind of song that
you used to like to listen to if you had a long night or kinda hung
over (not that I ever have been) the next morning..I'm afraid that
JA's version might make you quite ill..but it still isn't that bad
it grows on you ..its to bad that they didn't continue the Other One
and if you listen closely, hidden inside the rythym of the Other One
you can hear the lead guitarist rip off the begining of Birdsong.....
Jim I kinda liked Jack Sprout as well...Uzless Blues was funny.

Dead concert survives power outage

An electrical outage didn't stop the fun last week when Arista Records
threw a party in Los Angeles ot promote Deadicated, an album of Grateful
Dead songs interpreted by other muisicians. Dwight Yoakum and the Dead's
Bob Weir were performing "Truckin" when the power went out but the
Deadheads in the crowd were undeterred and continued singing until power
was restored a couple of minutes later...

Now I'm pissed. 7/4 is a great reggae beat. How can they not play it that
way? Even *I* can play it that way (somewhat :-)). These musicians must not
get into 7/4 time. I can't even imagine what the song would be like in a

if the idea for DEADICATED was to sound like the dead then we might
as well just listen to the Dead albums/tapes/cds that we already have.
this was a tribute to the dead not a "stars on 45" copycat version
of dead tunes.

well its that blending iof the 12/4 backbeat from the other one laid
into Riplle, which is originally straight 4/4 (I think/??) that
made me say that I thought the song was "interesting" as played
by Jane's addiction. Its just that from the sounds of it it
seemed like they were about to play a killer other one that
would have fot their style of music more anyway,..

But I'm with you Rich,.. I'd rather hear the new interpretations
and I'd bet the boys would too. In pointing out that Burning Spear
had dropped the 7/4 time signature I did not mean to imply that
I did not like the song. Au contraire it is alos my favorite on the
album ***BECAUSE*** it is so different from the dead,.. time signature
included or not,.. the sheer style difference is amazing enough. Heck,
I didn't even recognize it until about 1/2 way through the first verse.

I bought Deadicated last night. Very nice. I've cut out the CD box front
and I'm going to put it somewhere in my office.  The CD is very cool looking;
decorated with a rain forest picture; if you touch it softly, the trees
in the picture are slightly raised..very cool. the liner notes are extensive.
each band says something about their introduction to the boyz (if applicable).
then, some information about how you can help the rain forest cause.

I picked up Deadicated also - they must make a poster of the cover
artwork!! Sounds great, I've often wondered what the Dead would sound
like if they were competent on ALL of their instruments (the voice is
the original instrument). ~/~ I've been able to get into all the
numbers, except "Estimated," but I'm working on it. I'd love to hear a
straight reggae cover of "Row Jimmy." In the liner notes, Bruce
Hornsby paid the band a backhand insult when he said they have "fifty
or sixty great songs." I guess that's true for their originals, but
some of their covers aren't too shabby (BTW, how large is their
    repertoire of originals v. covers?).

The only song that really annoyed me was Dwight Yoakam's cover of
"Truckin'." Instead of playing it in 4/4, he plays it in 8/8!! Why
can't some people leave well enough alone?

I got Deadicated for Father's day, thanks Nathan:-), and I love it all, except
for Midnight Oil's version of Wharf Rat. I listened to it 4 or 5 times and I
just don't like it. Other than that the album is superb.
