    Now i have problems!
     I was all set to go to Red Rocks in July and Telluride in August.
    I planned on doing some camping down around Telluride and spend two or
    three days just fishing and drinking beer.
     Now I have to decide on what i'm going to do?????

Anybody got a line on when tix go on sale for the Red Rocks show. Not having 
heard the anouncment,a friend of mine and I showed up to get tix on 5/20. 
They had no cluewhen tix would go on sale.

	Not sure when the Centrum tix go on sale but MSG ones
	go on sale on the 12th of October.  That show is the
	Friday after the Centrum show.  Thanks for the reminder
	to put this in Jamie.  By the way, the tour dates are
	here someplace, Gerry also sent them to the members.

    No, I've just had the need to look for a couple of notes and had to do
    a dir/title (which is pretty quick anyways 'cause this conference is
    small) instead of a (preferable) keyword search.  Being the helpful
    contributing member of the GRATEFUL community that I am, I added 
    friendly reminders to our moderators while writing my informative notes. 
    Now to find out about Adam's first time, which I know I can easily find
    in GRATEFUL_OLD thanks to keywords.

I added keywords "JGB" and "JERRY_GARCIA_BAND" to this topic.  One thing I
have is a batch job that takes a directory of a list of conferences I define
(via a database) weekly.  then, when i needs to do a dir/title search, i
spawn out of notes, search dead.lis for the topic i want, logout, and go
to the topic.  takes under 10 seconds to do this.  if you wish to acquire
this command procedure, give me a hollar at ZENDIA::FERGUSON (this is where
the program lives).

    Actually, the JGB tours constantly. I really doubt he's going on
    tour *specifically* to sell the album - although sales will surely
    escalate during the tour. As will the recent Garcia/Grisman release.
    He just hasn't played in the East in a while, understandably prefering
    to play at home.
    
    FWIW, the Dead did tour Europe blatantly promoting Without A Net.

	While hanging out at the Minor Chord yesterday, picking up the 
	new Nanci Griffith CD, I was talking about the Dead shows at the
	garden with the clerk.  He has seen Tuesday night's show, thought
	it was good.

	Then we started talking about the JGB tour.  He said he was going 
	but that getting money together for tickets so soon after the
	Garden shows was a challenge.

	So soon?  I told I thought the on sale date for Worcester was
	Saturday, 12 October.  He said, no, it's *this* saturday, 28 Sep.
	He firedup the Ticketmaster terminal and confirmed that:

	    JGB for the Centrum Go On Sale Saturday, 28 Septmber!!!

	No on sale date for Providence was listed...

Well, I just got through.... 10:16 am or so. My seats are in the upper
teir....

what time did tix go on sale?  9 am ?  I thought 10 am was the time......

I was in line at the TicketShafter at the Greendale mall when tickets went on 
sale at 10:00, at about 10:20 I was at the window.  I got nosebleed seats too!

	I was FIRST in line at a Ticketmaster and got tickets at 10:01 am.
	Section 123 row EE, which is a couple of rows off the floor at
	the 50 yard line.  ok seats but I expected 10th row or thereabouts
	(hah!).   Sure makes me wonder...

	I think the Worcester Rectum is part of a scalper scam.  I called
	them constantly about details like wristbands and all that, didn't
	get to call wednesday, and on thursday the box office said "oh yes,
	350 wristbands were given out yesterday"!  They said that this was 
	announced on the radio (did ANYONE hear it?) and that it was in the 
	paper.  I haven't bought the Worcester paper recently, did anyone see 
	anything ?    I did buy the paper on friday and it included what looked 
	like a first announcement of the jerry show.

	And for this aggravation I got to pay $8.50 is fees to TicketShafter!

	One has to wonder where the hell all the lower section seats went?
I got through at 10:16 ... or so, and every other time I've ever gotten
through this early, I've received decent seats.  Upper level at 10:16 ?  
Something is fishy!  Very fishy!!  

	

	Well, I went and stood at line at my favorite Ticketmaster
	outlet on Saturday morning.  I arrived there at about 9:40
	and was 22nd in line.  And no, i won't tell you of which outlet
	I am speaking :-) :-) :-)

	There wsa only one person working the ticket machine.  Even 
	though he was doing a great job, he still had to take your order,
	punch in the request, take your money, give you your tickets,
	make change and then move on to the next person.  Well, OK,
	he did a bit of pipelining and that speeded things up a bit but
	not lots.

	I estimate it was at least 10:15 when I got to the counter.  I
	asked for six tickets and received Section 103, Row F.  This
	is pretty much straight away from the stage, a bit into the
	corner on the "Phil" side, in the upper section of the lower
	seating seating section (if there were no memory errors 
	retrieving that information).

	Pretty good seats, I'm pretty pleased - and thankful.  Sorry 
	about the rest of you that didn't make out so well.  But it is
	defintiely curious why I did so well at a time when others
	seemed not to be...

    Well, if the situation is like the last tiome JGB played the Centrum,
    you could get tickets from scalpers for much less than face value at
    the show, and get decent seats. It may not be the same this time around
    since they announced this show well in advance and it's the only show
    this side of Providence or Hartford.

The tickets do go on sale this Saturday October 5.  I *think* it's Ticketmaster
but I'm not sure because the radio station didn't say and neither does there
telephone concert line.  I'm trying to find out.

    Jelly Roll is a common pastry available at many bakeries and grocery
    stores. Basically cake rolled with a jelly filling.
    
    I've always had the impression it had some other connotations
    concerning an entirely different type of confection, specifically of a
    prurient nature, e.g.: "I think I'll go hang around back and try and
    pick up some Jelly Roll" - David Bromberg.  I meant to ask him several
    questions like this one last year when we saw him at the OVK, but I

    We had a Nor'easter yesterday - ie a hurricane that blew by New England 
    then swirled back down out of the northeast. Other than that, I don't
    know what else it could be.

	That hurricane/no'easta did a mighty fine job of clearing the 
	shin-deep blanket of leaves off my yard, and left a neat little
	pile of leaves in the driveway to dispose of (in the woods ;-)

JC mon, have a good trip home.  The storm is winding down, but at it's 
strongest yesterday many people on the cape and south shore said it was 
stronger than hurry cane Bob and the storm we all know as the Blizzard of 
'78.  Lots of boats and coastal homes are simply gone.  The news showed 
some amazing footage of waves crashing into sea walls with surf and spray 
rising about 30-50 feet (that's about 10-20 meters 8^) into the air - no 
exaggeration!.  The winds on the cape were sustained at 70 mph.  At high tide 
the ocean in some areas came 1/2 mile inland according to the news.  Pretty 
intense storm, depending on what time you some in you may get a birds eye view 
on some pretty extensive damage (they are predicting clearing skys tomorrow and 
the weekend).

Well, despite the winds the pile of leaves aside Fog's driveway was still big
enough for both of us to jump in and be totally covered with wet leaves (ahh,
I love the smell of wet leaves).  It was certainly alot of fun, thanks Fog.
Oh and by the way .... I had the pleasure to see "Gloria" last night, the pink
New Yorker circa 60's with wings "the size of Lisa Yetto".  We measured, and
it's close - but I am bigger!  Heh heh, I am bigger than Charley_O too ...
I like it when I can say things like that!  :-)

	only knocked all the remaining leaves off my trees and

	You don't need to know any french in France. All the people there are
so nice, and they all know english really well; just tell them "I'm american!" 
and they'll give you the best seats, the best services, and will wait on you

    the tickets would be mailed out 1-2 weeks before the show. Tomorrow is
    1 week before the show. I'm not too worried yet. If you don't get them
    in time TShaft will arrange for some to be available at the box office
    the day of the show; that's why you wrote down your little transaction
    number, right JC?

    Call up ticketmaster and ask for customer service.  Tell customer
    service you would like to check on the status of a ticket order.  Give
    customer service your order number.  They will tell you whether or not
    your tickets were mailed out yet, and if they were, on what day. 
    Tickets can be mailed as late as 7-10 days before the performance.
    If they were lost in the mail, you will get new tickets held at the box
    office.

The box office has seats in the lower sections yesterday which 
is weird because we got ours the day they went on sale and got
in the 200's.

maybe lower sections = 200's but I was thinking 100's.

	Its standard practice to hold back good seats and release them as the
concert gets closer to happening, right on up to the night of the show. The
reason is that they figure the folks who show up on the first day of ticket
sales are the least choosy about good seats, and the folks buying tickets 
closer to the event are more choosey.  I've gotten near front row seats
from box offices the night of the show (Centrum, Great Woods, For example). 

	It usually depends on the venue's judgement on how many tickets will
sell. If they're pretty sure all the tickets will sell out the first day of
ticket sales, they'll let the best seats go first and wont hold back any. If
they suspect the show won't sell out the first day, they'll hold back good
blocks of seats and release them as the show draws nearer as an incentive to 
folks to buy them. It makes sense from the promoter/venue perspektive: The 
diehard fans'll be the first in line and take the worse seats and be happy 
about it.

Fog, is that the "Fog" theory of ticket sales?  Or, is this indeed the real
practise?  If it is, that is lame!  I got through at 10:15 AM and I got upper
section seats ... I could not believe it!

that as a matter of policy...

    It is common for any venue to 'block' so-called 'house seats', as well
    as seats for the promoter's discretionary use.  These blocks can be
    quite large.  I know this to be the case for a couple of the local
    venues where friends of mine work.  Karin and I went to see Michael
    Hedges a while back and got grate seats (through those friends),
    seventh row center.  They were house seats, and we were the only ones
    in the row (until the second set ;-).
    
    The front row(s), center are usually blocked for the promoter.  If you 
    really get lucky, someone will no show for these.  If they're sitting at 
    will-call, the box office with sell them right off.  You really have to 
    know at what point the box office punts the will-calls and sells them,
    though.  On the other hand, if you know someone, and you can get in when 
    the show is first booked, before the promoter seats are blocked, you can 
    sometimes get them.  It helps to know the people who run the box 
    office computer :-)
    
    The promoter can release these seats at the last minute, if they want
    to.  Or, they may just be will-call no-shows of blocked promoter or
    house seats.  They certainly don't want prime seats to go empty.

    I bought only one ticket hoping the likelyhood of it being a good one

    He gave me Section 3, Row G, Seat 1.  Folks, that's 7th row on the
    floor!!!!!  :^)  Win some lose some, I've lost enough in the past to
    justify this win...

They played Like A Road last night at the Centrum.



Speaking of seats, I sat in the lower section without being bothered once
during the course of the entire show.  It seems that a fair amount of good
seats were not sold, as I saw many people come and go from the area where
I was sitting.  Not many people were kicking others out....



I could see the Treemon easily from where I was sittin' ... during the
first set, you looked like you were enjoying the show!!!  I still can't
believe you got 7th row!!  Those are hot seats!!!

Was that show as good as I thought it was?  Wow.


Yeah, Like a Road...dc missed a good one.  Money Honey was real nice, Deal 
smoked..nice jammin',  C'est la vie (pardon my french)..isn't the name of
that tune "Never Can Tell"?  anyway, that was hot.  

Loved watching Jerry's face while he was playing..

    Close, it's "You Never Can Tell" and it's my mistake for incorrectly
    transcribing the list.
    
    We had 1st row riser seats in section 124 right across the aisle
    from Rachey, Ken, JC and Andy. Great seats! Turned out that our seats 
    were duplicate seats with a couple that got there before us. Not
    counterfeits, but duplicates. So the Centrum upgraded our seats
    2 sections closer to the stage - about 11th row from the stage,
    4th row on the risers. Better seats!
    
    During the break a friend of ours came by and had 2 seats 19th row
    floor in the center that were supposed to go to another friend but
    there was a mixup. So we grabbed those seats. Absoulutely great
    seats with fantastic sound. There was a tapers nest a couple of
    rows in front of us and I knew some of them so there'll be some
    fine tapes available after the tour.
    
    Oh, the guys who the floor seats belonged to ended up buying box
    office seats in the 8th row floor (right behind treemon) just before
    the show. The Centrum security told us that Jerry had held blocks
    of seats and released them yesterday.

    Indeed fine seats,  the closest I've been to Jerry ever.  Which is
    something I'd like to say a little more about.
    
    I had a wonderful experience at my first JGB show last night, and have
    a few special moments to share with you all, take it for what it's
    worth, one man's perspective:
    
    After painfully slow service at the Thai Orchid, I was forced to dump
    my cash (albeit borrowed from /) on the table and excuse myself saying
    I didn't want to miss one note of my first show.  They graciously bid
    me a good show and I headed across the street in search of the 7th row.
    
    A rather tame but warm first set was started with "How Sweet it is", I
    took it as the band's message to the audience judging from the
    expressions on the back up vocalists, and something in the way Jerry
    sung it.  The love theme continued with a beautiful They Love Each
    Other.  Seeing the Jerry band play it presents an interesting contrast
    with the Dead's rendition.  The Jerry band really follows that nice
    broken rhythm pattern after each chorus and throughout the song.
    
    I don't quite remember the exact order of the rest of the first set
    songs, but "When the Hunter gets Captured by the Game" was my first
    time hearing it, VERY interesting song.  And my first set highlight
    then played: "Dear Prudence".  I've heard this on tapes before, but
    never live.  I don't think that my imagination fooled me on this, but
    last night's version was JUST BEAUTIFUL!  The band played together, and
    brought this song to some very interesting places for me.
    
    "Money Honey", "Like a Road", and "Deal" followed to close the set (I
    probably made a few setlist errors there), but they really rocked on
    the latter half of Deal to close the set, and the lights came up. 
    Throughout the first set the music was there, but with the exception of
    Dear Prudence didn't take me anywhere too special.
    
    The SECOND set on the other hand...
    
    I don't really want to talk about the musical quality of what was being
    played because I'm not sure I can express my feelings too well in words,
    I'm having trouble just sorting them out in my head.  I'll leave it at,
    they came a long way with the music, but could've gone a lot further. 
    But the enjoyment I had was IMMENSE.  This is the part of the show that
    something really special happened to me.
    
    Being a genetic mutant has it's advantages I guess.  The way Jerry was
    facing while singing through his mike was such that he was directly
    facing me.  Since I was at least a head taller than everyone around me,
    it occurred to me that he was looking right AT me!  When I turned
    around to see the rest of the crowd to indicate what kind of light he had 
    to see me, I could plainly see that Jerry COULD most likely make out
    every detail on my face (poor Jerry).  The lighting was like you are
    driving down a major highway near dusk, and you can't see any cars in
    front of you because the sun is on the horizon, but when you turn
    around, the details of all the cars behind you are illuminated by the
    low sun.  
    
    Most of the second set (call me crazy if you want) I felt like Jerry
    was keying off of my facial expressions.  I would smile (numerous
    times), and in every case he smiled right after!  It got so linked that
    I really started to feel like Jerry was playing to ME and checking out
    my reactions to the music he was playing.  It is very difficult to
    describe much more than that, but at a couple of points in the set, I
    actually think that Jerry was affected by my expressions/body movement
    to the point where it played a role in the way he evolved the song.
    
    Again, I know it may sound far fetched, but it was VERY special to me,
    and something I'll remember and cherish for no short time.  
    
    I hope all that went had a wonderful show...  :^)

Treemon that is an awesome story!!!!  I had a similar experience at the very 
first concert I ever went to (it was the Marshall Tucker Band) and it really 
can lift your spirit up in a way that's hard to describe, but you did it well!

Yup, and seemed to be about 2/3's or 3/4's full (very few folks behind the 
stage and way up in the upper sections) but that's just a guess.

Great performance, great sound.  I love the Centrum.  Almost all the songs were
firsts for me (but being my 3rd show that's understandable).  Highlights for me
were Dear Prudence and The Way You Do The Things You Do.  I have a question
about Shining Star.  Shortly after the song started, I recognized it as a
Motown-type love song that I'd heard a lot on the radio as a kid (70's).  I
thought it was by a female vocal group, but I couldn't place it.  After the
show, I was told it was a Four Tops tune.  Was it re-done by anyone in the
70's?  Is this a tune they play often?  I don't recall seeing it on set lists.

	Ok, here comes Mr. Rotten!

	I thought the JGB show at the Centrum was mediocre at best.  In
comparision to the show I saw two years ago at Great Woods, it just seemed 
to lack the punch the G.W. show had.  Perhaps this is due to the absence
of a brass instrument (Clearence Clemens, of E Street Band fame, played
with JGB at G.W.).  There just seemed to be a big hole in the music with
Jerry left there to do nearly all of the work.  I'm surprised that Jerry 
didn't give Kahn a solo.

	There were quite a few highlights for me.  Shining Star really, really
cooked.  Jerry drive this song just about as far as one can go.  He really
had the groove and control throughout.  C'est La Vie (or whatever ya'll 
wanna call this one) was very good also.  

	The sound in the Centrum was outstanding.  I really felt that I hadn't
seen a concert for ages before JGB, when in reality, I saw 4 Dead shows 2
months previous.  It boiled down to me not being in the Centrum for a long
while!

    Centrum. My wife is taknig a one day class in Philly today, 
    and yesteday, on her flgith down to Philly form Logan, at 3:10,
    she bumped into Bruce on the plane.....

    	The show was a "light hearted" show to quote a good friend of mine,
    both of use veterans of Jerry shows for about 13 years now. We've
    definitely seen the JGB "hotter" than they were,. but not sweeter.
    The song selection may have had a lot to do with this,.. I mean
    there was no real Blues played,.. no real nitty gritty stuff ..
    and no real heavy stuff (like say a Mission). Ths one exception
    was probably Dear Prudence,.. which coincidentaly was the highlight
    for me. 
    
    	So,. I kind of agree with you,.. but remembering a lesson that da
    ve taught me about the Tuesday Garden show,.. I did enjoy it. There
    was a little less of the "wowing" of the crowd that Jerry usually does
    with his guitar work,. and for me thats a disappointment,.. but you've
    got to take whats there and relate to it. Shining Star would normally
    make me think "Oh,. how sappy can you get?",.. but when Jerry does it
    with those backup vocals,. they just put so much heart into it,.. you
    gotta like it! :-) Well,.. at least I did.
    
    	Hunter was a real surprise,.. even to the band from the counds of
    it :-/. I liked hearing this rarity even if it was a bit rough,.. OK 
    a lot rough... Midnight Moonlight was nicely played I thought. And the
    way you do the things you do was like super funky slow,.. almost like
    it was going backwards,.. I liked it for the way they interpreted it,
    even if I would interpret it totally different. Hell,.. thats what
    makes it interesting.
    
    	I think I'll head down to Providence tomorrow for hopes of catching
    a Hotter nittier grittier type of Jerry,.. hopefully hitting us
    with Thats what love will make you do,.. Don't Let Go,..Think,.. etc

	A couple of notes have commented on how good they thought the 
	sound at Centrum was for the Jerry show.

	For where I was sitting (section 103, straight back from Melvin)
	the sound was fair to acceptable.  I could always hear Jerry's
	guitar fine, and his voice OK, but the entire rhythm section was
	an indistinguishable muddy blur.  It did get better as the first
	set went on, but at no time would I describe the sound as "very
	good" let alone "excellent".

Welp, before the Worcester show I asked if JGB had done "Like a Road" in a
while, and they played it at the show!

 Yep, MSG Friday, Albany Sat and Hahtfid Sun...I have Friday's set list at
home..my brother went, was a nice show..Lay Down Sally, Lucky Old Sun, How
Sweet, The way you do, etc...and Wonderful World for an encore.

    I went to the show in Albany Saturday.  I thought the show
    was really good.  Only my 2nd JGB show though.. 1st was at
    Gratewoods.  Highlights for me were Sister & Brothers,
    Let's spend the night together, Breadbox, Shining Star,
    and of course Lay Down Sally.  the keyboard was hot in this!
    And it was pretty entertaining when Jerry stripped the strings
    off his guitar and asked the crowd to "talk amongst yourselves"
    (or whatever it is you do) I believe was his second comment...?
    
    No encore though, which was a drag.  
    
    There was a lot of vending going on, first time I've been to 
    Albany that it didn't rain or snow!  
    
    It'll be too bad if the Dead don't play Albany this spring,
    I think it's a good place to go for a show or 2 or 3.....
    but unfortunately I don't think it's going to happen.

re the sound

In Hartford, I thought the sound was pretty bad.  The first 3 songs were 
terribly muddled, including the guitar and vocals.  They took a short break due
to technical difficulties and it sounded a little better, but for the most part
the sound wasn't very good.  It seemed to me that the sound system was really
big enough for the size of the venues.  Does everyone think that was the case
or was it just poor sound adjustments?

Rare these days.  I don't think it was played for years, but it was
brought back temporarily - saw it only once or twice on setlists for 
the past year or so.

At Worcester and Hartford, Kahn's bass was quite muddy.  I could barely hear
it, and the upper bass frequencies, which I like to hear, were not there.

At Hartford, for the first few songs, Jerry's vocals were practically
inaudible.

Hopefully, Providence will be better.  Overall, I have no major gripes about
the sound.  Overall, it's good.  Jerry's guitar, Seals' organ, the backup
singers, and the drums are all mixed in nicely.

I only have 1 Jerry tape (from '80), and on it are, among others, Catfish John,
Simple Twist of Fate, That's Alright Mama, Sugaree, and Puttin Up Resistance. 
I'd like to hear any of these.   Hopefully they'll do a Cats tonight!  Or
Another Lay Down Sally (maybe they'll make it all the way through w/o equip
problems!)

    Then you should talk to me about fixin' you up a coupla more ... I have
    a JGB tape from earlier this year at the Warfield, and another from '79
    (with Merle, Kahn and what sounds like the horns from Tower of Power)
    at the Cotati Cabaret that should be in every Deadhead's tape
    collection.  Of course, I also have some others, but these two are my
    favorites fer shur.

I'm pretty sure I read it was by Jimmy Cliff, possibly off some old jerry

How long have the Neville's been around ?  Maybe that could answer it.
The earliest that DBII has jgb doing Limbo was in late '74.   The Neville's

    I caught the MSG and Albany JGB shows this weekend.  There were
    definately high points in both, but I have to say that I think this
    whole JGB tour is pretty low-energy and a little disappointing. 
    Everything was so slooooooow.  I mean, I don't know.. but when I hear a
    Don't Let Go, I want to hear a high-energy, bluesy, jamming version. 
    Friday night's was just way too spacey for me.. no kick.  I thought the
    song selection in Albany was much better.  More of a mix of fast and
    slow.. but even there, the faster songs were played slower than normal. 
    Tangled Up in Blue was closer to a Dylan tempo than a JGB one!  Okay -
    maybe that's a little exaggerated, but I kept trying to sing along and
    I was going much faster than Jerry.  There were high points though! 
    Lay Down Sally was grate!, especially in Albany.  And I love Shining
    Star.. 70s am radio at it's best. ;-)  I heard a lot of songs for the
    first time (and then the second time :-)) which is always cool.
    
    But, even though the shows were just okay, we had fun!  Albany was
    grate as always, although it was freeeeezing! brrrrr!  Was a good
    excuse to buy new tie-dye socks in the lot though.. gotta keep those
    toes warm! :-)  And the best part of the road trip was the *beautiful*
    rainbow we saw on the ride up!  It was crystal clear.. you could see
    every color perfectly.  We were a mile from a rest stop when we saw 
    it, so we were able to pull off and watch for a while.  We got to see 
    the light travel from side to side.. first the left end was bright and 
    then the arch lit up and then down the right before it faded away. 
    All the cars on the highway were beeping at each other and pointing so
    noone would miss it. :-)

You don't know what you're missin' by not having JGB tapes!!  I have some very
nice JGB tapes from '74 that are very jazzy, as well as many other JGB tapes
from the 80s and 90s.  

I have a very nice acoustic one from '82 -- Jerry and Kahn in Alaska!  The
crowd is amazingly quiet which makes the recording very nice...

	Phyllis, I think we're just seeing a different phase of JGB
	right now which is trending towards mellower stuff, intricate
	jams, and different material. 

	At Worcester, the only show I could get to :-/, Deal never took
	off for example - compare it to the 89 tour deals which *smoked*.
	But something like "That's What Love Will Make You Do" was just
	so nice at the centrum - it was played very slowly and got into
	such a cool rhythm and flow, and really streched out - much like 
	the style of jerry's handling of Lay Down Sally.   It's got sort
	of a laid back reggae style I'd say.   I love it!

	This band is MUCH different from the '89 version with Clarence,
	and I prefer it.

	I missed Don't Let Go (damn!) but *hopefully* some good tapes will
	surface someday so I can make my own judgement.

	Another tune I'd like to see JGB bring back: After Midnight

    Yeah, Ken, I know what you're saying and it definately seemed like a
    new phase.  I think my expectations were just for something completely
    different than what I got and so I was disappointed.  At the time, I 
    really thought Albany was a lot hotter, but a few days later now, I'm 
    not so sure if it just wasn't that I knew what we'd get there.
    
    I love intricate spacey jams at my dead shows, but it's not necessarily
    what I'm looking for at a JGB show.  I like my JGB with more of a blues
    edge than a jazz edge I guess.  But I'll take it this way too! :-)
    
    

    Digressing back to the Nevilles a bit, I was listening to the radio
    last night and heard Casey Kasem's day in rock or whatever it's called.
    Aaron Neville's big hit was "Tell It Like It Is" in 1967, so he's been

    But FWIW, I think you are right. Jerry has mellowed. Lets face it
    folks, he is getting older. It used to be that you could go to four
    shows,.. catch three HOT ones,.. and one mellow one. Now you go to
    four shows,. you catch three mellow ones,. and one hot one. For
    example,. last night in Providence was HOT. Excellent guitar playing.
    He still didn't reach the highs of the Jerry of days gone by, but
    it was a beautiful show anyway. Blew doors on Wrocester,. and from what
    I hear, Worcester was better than Hartford.
    
    	I also agree completely about the pace of Don't Let Go. He
    slowed it down a little compared to the 89 tour,.. and I liked
    it better when it had a little more pace on it. Jerry seems to be
    breaking new ground in terms of playing slow songs these days.
    There are times I feel like he's going backwards,.. like during a
    Senor,.. but sometimes he really cranks out a nice sweet lead over
    a slow groove. You gotta kind of not let that bum you out whne you hear
    it,,.and see where he goes with it. Trouble is most of the time most
    of the people are already so bored by the time that he gets to his
    solo that they're all talking or whatever and they miss the good part
    of those tunes. Like a Road can be like that. Anyway,.. the slow songs
    don't bother me at all when the two bacup vocalists get a chance
    to sing on them. Those women can really belt it out. That is one
    "segment" or piece of the whole show that has improved since last
    time I would say. They seem really comfortable with Jerry now, and
    he seems to be spotlighting them. I think thats why they do some of
    the slower tunes,.. to give the singers a chance to shine.. and IMHO
    those are some of the best vocals I've heard.
    
    	Anyway././ Providecnce was great. There was some slow stuff,.. but
    just about everythying was played excellent. Don't Let Go,.. I could
    say it was a nice jam,.. but more accurately,. it was like 3 or 4
    nice jams,. if ya catch my drift. The deal did get going. Thats what
    Love was a bit low on energy,.. but still a welcome "blues" number.
    Senor was so slow,, it went backwards,.. but the guitar riff soared!
    Lay Down Sally was my first time live,. really neat. I don't have any
    other versions to compare it to but I thought it was really coooool.
    The Tore up had a weird groove on it,.. I'm not sure I liked it as much
    as the old way they did it.../ actually,. I'm not sure they intended
    	for it to be so "different" ,. I think it just kind of came out
    that way?,,,... all in all ,. a very good show.. Jerry was on.

    Getting older is only part of it IMHO ...not catching any of the shows
    it is tough for me to comment but based on the new album etc I would
    say he is exploring new territory (jazz vs blues/r&r) and that
    is why he enjoys playing with this band or would like to play with
    Branford,Wasserman,and Hornsby..yep I would agree he is getting towards
    the jazz side of things but those roots have always been there. 
    Whereas with the Dead hes stuck or they are stuck in a rut that needs
    to change to make it more fun.  Remember besides deep roots into 
    blue grass some country western and blues he has always expressed
    interest into Coltrain,Parker etc and Django Reinhardt..I feel these
    guys are having a big influence on him now....the bottom line is that
    the music is still beautiful and he has more fun with exploration than
    the same old thing.

    I don't see it as getting any jazzier than its been. I think hes
    dropped some of the rockier rollier numbers yes,.. and has even
    relegated the blues to only one or two appearances per show.
    
    If I had to pick a category for the "new" direction,.. it would
    be Gospel,. not jazz. He was much jazzier in 77-80 than he is
    now. Although ther is nothing he ever played that is more jazzy than
    the one of the several grooves he gets into during Don't Let Go.
    That song can turn into pure jazz,.. but thats only one tune. The
    other songs hes added and or is doing more of don't have a jazz
    feeling. Some are just plain onle sappy love songs (Shining Star)
    and others are souylful ballads (Senor, Twist of Fate),.. but
    there isn;t much "new" jazz in the mix. Mostly,. its the "feel" of the
    tunes I'm thinking of when I say gospel,... of course, ahving Melvn
    who produces something like 75% of the West Coast gospel recordings and
    ythe two backup vocalists who seem like they just came out of a revival
    meeting has a lot to do with it.

	My mistake - I meant to say "The Way You Do The Things You Do".
	I always get those two songs mixed up!   TWYDTTYD was the 
	highlight of the Woosta show for me, as well as "When the Hunter
	Gets Captured By The Game" (I felt priveleged to hear such a rare
	jerry tune ;-) and Dear Prudence(!).

    Funny, it sounds like the same things everyone was saying two years
    ago. Each successive night being better. I didn't see any of the shows
    so I can't say what I think. However, Tull last Saturday was great, and
    Ian was in great shape (physically and voice-wise) considering the tour
    was almost called off.
    
    Maybe Jerry's mellowness is from his desire to take a rest. He's gotta
    be one of the busiest guys in the music business. There's probably a
    lot more that he'd like to do but he's bound to do things for others
    (i.e. feel obligated to support the Dead family, tour, etc.). It's been
    a long time with the current JGB format. In the 70's it was always
    something different, Legion of Mary, Reconstruction, Old & In The Way,
    Garcia & Saunders. Maybe he's itching to try something new.

	I too have been thinking along similar lines.   Jerry's like
	the "frontman" for the dead, out front, dealing with major
	expectations, under a microscope.  But with jgb he can lay back a 
	little bit and be more of an [semi-]equal participant in the
	band.

Here's my (albeit digressive) theory...

	As I've seen in show reviews over the years, I come to notice that west
coast Dead fans are in general more forgiving and demanding of high energy, top
notch performance than are East coast fans, and that maybe that explains why
the Dead (and JGB) prefer West coast Venues. Maybe its that East coast fans 
simply prefer more high energy shows; I know I do.

     I was also thinking that maybe Jerry enjoys his band because
    it's easier "technically", he has some pedals and effects but
    it's nothing like all the effects and MIDI stuff he has with the
    Dead, he doesn't have as much to worry about. He can kick back and
    just play guitar and is not expected to be so experimental, like
    making his guitar sound like a flute, sax, trumpet, etc, not to
    mention all the spacey stuff.
     Maybe playing with Grisman too lets him get back to basics.

    I think that the music with JGB is not as complex and does not have 
    the "density" that the Dead enjoy..which in turn makes it easier...
    thus his way of relaxing....I still think he needs a hiatus.

    HEY HAS ANYONE HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT THE JERRY BAND PLAYING IN MAINE 
    SOMETIME THIS FALL? I HEARD ABOUT A POSSIBLE NOVEMBER DATE BUT IT WAS
    UNCONFIRMED. IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PASS IT ON.

    We heard a rumor last night that JGB was going to play Portland,
    Albany, Hartford, MSG, and a new arena in Amherst, MA sometime this
    fall. No firm dates yet, and these are only rumors, FWTW...

    	I just read the RS interview and Jerry states that he will be doing
    a northeast run with the JGB, Im sure no dates have been announced as of
    yet. but I will make you a member of GRATEFUL and Im sure when news of
    show dates are announced you will be notified by email as when and
    where (unless you are a member already :'))

    	Thanks for the information about JGB dates. The source I heard it
    from is rather unreliable but in this case he seems to be right. Just
    the fact that Jerry is even thinking about playing in Maine is good
    news. Personally I'm getting tired of having to travel six hours to see
    the Dead and maybe with Jerry coming that means that eventually the
    rest of the gang will follow.

    the new haven coliseum is an "intimate" setting for ~8K (and it's the
    smallest venue on the list). i can't believe he or anyone from the Dead
    would go near the meadowlands again.

    for a nice east cost tour..lot of stops without much travlin'

    
    The arena for Nov 14 is The On-Center in Syracuse,NY. A relatively new

I was just being sarcastic.   Was it that long ago that Jerry could
play the Orpheum in Boston?  New haven New shamven!  I ain't goin' 
down there.  :)  

The CCCC is nice if gen admin.  Prov is nice.  

Here's some more sarcasm.  Pretty soon Bob Weir will pack the likes of
the Centrum as well (well ain't that a stretch!).  JGB will be playing 
Stadium gigs and the Dead will be doomed to play the Moon because we all 
won't be able to afford a shuttle ticket.

Either go to a Ticketbastard ticket outlet on the on-sale date, or go to
the venue itself (to avoid ridiculous Ticketbastard charges).  I guess the 
only way to know if they do wristbands is to call each venue.  If they do
wristbands, count on 1 less person being there trying to get tix (me).

    try to confirm what I read yesterday, - it seemed like the November 15
    Worcester Centrum show tix go on sale this Saturday, 10/2.  Did I

Yes - JGB tix on sale at 10 am at TicketBastard on sat 10/2, at least

    Whats the story on Jer tickets for the centrum, apparently tickets are
    not on sale this Saturday. Got my Portland Tix today, and the lady said
    that she knew nothing about tickets going on sale this saturday. I
    think she's gonna be real happy when they do, so we both can stop going
    through the same routine. Also called up the Centrum and they had no
    word yet as well. If someone has any info please Email or post a reply

I reckon not mon.  Last time Jerry was there, I don't think they sold much
over 60% of the capacity.

    Its times like the Jerry Garcia band getting 60% of a arenas possible
    crowd that you realize how much commercialization exists with the Dead.
    Its reassuring to know that with Jerry you can still casually enjoy a
    show, groove on just the music, and not other B.S. Not to demeanor the
    dead but I really enjoy a Jerry Break.

  Anyone familiar with songwriter/musician Essra Mohawk?
  Maybe from her associations with JGB and Zappa?

  I've been trading with a guy who knows her (acquaintance basis) and is a
  serious fan.  Sounds worth checking out...
  
  She was in the JGB in '81 and '82.  Was also the first Uncle Meat in the
  Mothers of Invention c. '67-8 (also involved romantically with Zappa).
  Sang on a few Schoolhouse Rock cartoons (whatever those are).

  Also wrote songs for the Shangri-Las (under her birth name, Sandy
  Hurvitz), Cyndi Lauper (Change of Heart), Bob Weir (not sure which), Lowen
  and Navarro, Tina Turner (Stronger Than the Wind).
  
  She and bassist Tim Drummond now co-lead the KillerGroove Band in/around
  Nashville, in the process of recording in LA with the Chambers Bros.
  
  She released an album in '70 called Primordial Lovers that's supposed to
  be great (amd hard to find); also Essra Mohawk in '74.
