| Remember me talking about car stereo problems? Well, this weekend, I took my
unit out of my car, and cleaned it. While marveling at the maze of electronics
in that little box, I noticed a little screw w/ a spring on it. I said, hmm,
what does this do? So, I turned it and noticed the tape head moving!! I was
very psyched! So, I went to my car, jury rigged my stereo w/ part of it's
guts exposed, threw in a dead tape, and fiddled with the tape head adjustment
until I reached optimum sound. I tried several other tapes to make sure it
was cool.................
Now my car stereo sounds good again. No more lame treble or flat bass!! Just
when I thought I was going to have to buy a new stereo ($300 savings!!)....
sure made my entire weekend ...
so, just for that, I'll have to look into getting some new speakers! any
suggestions for a good 6x9 speaker that sounds decent in an old-style (81)
camaro?
Merl Saunders and the Rainforest Band sounded HOT HOT HOT
this morning (1st gen, from DAT source, onto a metal tape)...

| RE car speakers ...
I recently put a pair of Radio Shack Minimus 77 speakers in my car, and
they sound better than any 6x9's I've ever used. For that matter, they
sound nearly as good as my big speakers at home. They are rated up to
55 watts, and handle it clean.
Actually, the smaller Miminus 7's have a better midrange sound than the
77's do (IMO). It's amazing how much sound comes outta those little
suckers. They cost about $100/pr, and the mounting brackets are
another $13.

I got my reservation for a backcountry camping permit at Yosemite NP

warning on the letter. Of course I comforted her by saying that I hope
we can get some sleep over the sound of tents being ripped open and
screaming campers being dragged off into the night. Grrrr

I think you adjusted the Azimuth, or head alignment, on your deck... it can
make an amazing difference in sound! If it's far enough off, you can lose

I *really* like my Boston Acoustics 797 6x9 speakers... they get great bass,
and I think they're on sale at Tweeter now for $169 (down from $199) which
is what I paid for 'em. I think you heard mine setup didn't you ? I did
blow out woofer on 1 speaker after 10 months, but Tweeter gave me a new
pair as it was under warranty.

I know I'm so rarely serious in here,.. but here goes
They have shown that women who are having their period
are something like 100 more times likely to be attacked by bear.
Something about menstruation must appeal to their sense of smell

good to eat. I don't know if they put that in the warning letter
or not,.. so I just wanted to make sure you knew. I wouldn't

I'd heard that too (also about post-coital scent - hey, it'll be our
honeymoon :^)), but I've read a couple of articles since then that
claim it's a myth. Bears in Yosemite will be black, not grizzlies, the
latter being FAR more dangerous. We did take that into account when
scheduling the trip, though, why take chances? If we take proper
precautions, the chances of being killed by a bear are about the same
as the airplane crashing. Even if we do have problems, all they'll want
is our food - not live meat. As for menstruation, the idea of packing
out used tampons, etc., is enough to discourage most women from
venturing into the backcountry then anyway. Women go swimming during
menstruation in the TV ads, but they don't camp without bathing for 4
days!
I gotta cobra snake skin for a necktie,
I wrassle bears in my free time...
old joke: Two backpackers meet a bear on the trail, and one of them
quickly drops his pack and starts lacing on running shoes. "What are
you doing," his companion asked, "you can't outrun a bear!" "I don't
have to," he replied, "I just have to outrun you!"
I know there's a joke about a woman with PMS scaring off a bear in
there, but I can't come up with it.

ditto... I know better ;-)
12.5 watts drives each speaker... given that the deck is "high power" w/
25x25 watts and drives 4 speakers. It's not the cleanest power but it's OK.
They are 3-way speakers, and I think they give great sound all around:
highs/mid/bass. I used to have Jensen's (coax) in there, used them for
_years_. While they take all the abuse you can give em, when I installed the
B/A's, I couldn't believe the difference (for about 4 times the $ of the
Jensen's I was hoping they'd sound better ;-) I noticed lots of textures and
subtleties that weren't there at all with the Jensens, like keyboards,
Bob, and so on... not to mention the bass.
I'd recommend going to Tweeter with a few tapes: a good soundboard,
a great audience tape, and a CD recording, and take em for a test drive.
Playing Philly 9/8/88 (aud) did it for me: the way Phil etc came thru made
up my mind.
Lemme know if you want to get together to check em out...

139.23 | Yosemite is one of my favorite places | MR4DEC::WENTZELL | Built for comfort | Wed Mar 20 1991 08:44 | 29 |
| Jamie I am jealous, but you did remind me of one of those things that makes me
happy (ahhhh yes, the topic ;^)). I had a great time in the wilderness of
Yosemite last May! Never even saw a cloud, and even though the nights were
cold (still snow on the ground in some places - we were at about 10,000
feet elevation) the days were sunny and warm. There is nothing like hiking and
camping out in the wilderness.
One episode that put me on a high for a while was while we were heading out
from our first campsite, which was at a little pond about 8 miles from the
nearest road and at about 9000 ft. The ice had just gone out on the pond, and
the snow on the ridge above us was beautiful and made for a fun slide down
after our hike up it. At the pond there is a little shack, built back
pre-WW2 time. Anyway, about a mile away from the shack, we came across
and old gentlemen making his way along the path. When he asked how much
farther to the pond/shack, we stopped to chat with him. He told us that he was
one of the mule train drivers that built the shack about 50 years ago, and that
he had not been back since the day it was finished. He wanted to see it one
more time, relive some memories, and soak up some of the beauty of the place.
He told us about scouting around the wilderness in those years and how they
used mules to cart up the supplies. He was an intersting man and made me see
that single place in a very different light.
We didn't see any bears, although bear droppings were around. We did
see plenty of smaller wildlife and birds though. One thing they do there is
make sure you know about the bears and how to behave to avoid any problems.
from what I'm told it is best to listen to their advice, even though at times
it may sound extreme.

Yeah, it was taped in Miami (I think) in 85 or 87 (can't remember which).
Its pretty good, fun to watch particularly in the middle of winter since
it appeared to be pretty hot during the show. About 1.5 hrs long.
I would like to have seen him back in the 80's. I did see him a couple
years ago, and while the show was a lot of fun, it seemed that a lot of
the "ad libbing or impromptu" stuff was pretty much rehearsed or rehashed.
Still a fun time though.

this part of the townhouse kinda sticks out from all the rest and
overhangs the bottom floor, so the speakers are almost hanging out in

Standing on the south end, at the top of the lawn hill, I panned
the whole arena, scanning side to side, back and forth, top to bottom,
and photgraphed almost the entire crowd. I was using a 200 lens,
so the field of view for each photo was narrow. I overlaped
the framing of each shot in order to be able to put all the
photos together to make a sort of panoramic picture of the scene.
Before the show yesterday, I was playing around with these photos, placing
them together, looking at all the little images of three or four
thousand people who were there enjoying the show. Now I'm trying to
figure out what song the dead were playing when I took these pictures.
I think this was a show on Sunday, the day after the last dark star
