118.0. "Favorite versions of tunes ..." by BOOKS::BAILEYB (Smilin' on a cloudy day) Mon Feb 11 1991 14:05

What are your favorite 'Dead tunes? What are your favorite versions of
those tunes? It's amazing to me how many times I can listen to the
same tune, from different showz (and different times in the band's
history) and the boyz make it sound so unique each time. It's made it
really interesting (and sometimes difficult) to decide which version of
a particular tune to put on a "sampler" tape ... and I've been making
sampler tapes for a few people lately.

Anyway, I wanted to start a note where people could list their favorite
versions of tunes. Maybe (hopefully) it'll initiate some trading
    interest ... ;^)

Some of the "gems" of my collection are ...

The Rub (07-02-71) - It kinda reminds me of the "Curly Shuffle" with
different words. I guess this is a favorite for the simple reason that
it's the best recording of the tune that I have .. I can make out
    almost all the lyrics.

Dark Star (08-27-72) - I've mentioned this one before ... from Veneta
Oregon. Really mellow, melodic jams in this version. Not quite as
spacy as Dark Star usually gets. Very pretty and very long.

Estimated Prophet (04-06-78) - Real nice jammin' after the lyrics are
done ... not as choppy as this song usually gets.

Mojo Workin' (10-21-78) - Definite energy tune ... a favorite by virtue
of the fact that it's the only version of the tune that I own.

    Playin'->China Doll (06-14-85) - The boyz were definitely in a jazz/jam
mood that night. The jam after Playin' sounds like something you'd
hear from the likes of Harvey Mason, Ron Carter, Eric Gale, and
friends. China Doll is sweet ... made even more so by the fact that
Jerry remembered all the words ... ;^) ... and there's an incredible
jam leading from China Doll into Drumz.

Big River (06-25-85) - Big River's always a favorite of mine, and
there's many versions I like. This one is my favorite primarily
because it's got Brent at his absolute best. This tune represents the
highest energy keyboards I've heard from the band till Bruce got heated
up during last year's Europe tour.

Shakedown Street (06-30-85) - This one starts out kinda ordinary, but
builds to an amazingly energetic jam ... almost symphonic at times.

Lovelight (03-29-90) - Branford Marsalis really makes this tune special.

Desolation Row (09-19-90) - Of all the wonderful music that came from
the MSG showz, this is the song I play the most often ... and get the
most requests for from people who hear it. Hauntingly beautiful.

Johnny B. Goode (12-31-90) - Well, actually, 01-01-91 since it was the
encore. Branford didn't do that much on this tune, but when he did
play it really enhanced the energy level. This is the tune to play for
your non-deadhead friends if you wanna hear them say something like
    "wow, who IS that?".

Well, there's my list of favorites. What's yours ...

    								... Bob

Another vote for Scarlet->Fire 5/8/77. From that first bowOOOOOOOOOOM of Phil's
bass, to that beautiful guitar solo in the middle, to the sneaky first notes
of Fire ... grate stuff.

There's also a very fine Morning Dew on a tape I have dated 10/13/68, though I
think the song itself is from 1/14/67 (acc. to Deadbase).

Yup, I think you caught me. I've got the Princeton tape too, so maybe
that's where I got confused. Thanks for setting me straight. Guess for

That Princeton tape is mentioned in the book "Playing In The Band" by David

The entire Pigpen rap is transcribed there too. If I had the energy I'd
type it in...

118.21Pigpen rap from Good Lovin'SKYBRD::MIRASSOUWe've all gone to look for America...Mon Feb 25 1991 00:54127
Excerpt from Pigpen's "Good Lovin'" rap.
Princeton, 19 April 1971
Unabashedly copied from David Gans & Peter Simon's "Playing in the Band"

I was goin' down the street one day
Right after me and my old lady got in a fight
I see this dude on the corner
He said, "Say, man, you look like you kinda lonesome
I said, "Yeah, well, me and my old lady
We had kind of a fallin' out, you understand."
He said, "Well, hey, listen-
I just got into bidness."
I said, "You just got into bidness?"
He say, "I'm in commercial merchandise," he says.
I say, "What kind of merchandise you got?"
He say, "Whatchoo want?"
Well, I said, "You got any dope?
Are you in the automobile bidness?
Do you fix refrigerators?
Do you fix windows?
Are you a plumber?"
He said, "No, man. I got myself a Cadillac."
I said, "Oh, yeah?"
He say, "What seem to be your trouble?"
I said, "Well, you know, me and my old lady,
We just had a little falling out."
He said, "Oh, that's it, huh?"
He say, "Well, listen:
I got about anything you want."
He say, uh,
"How much money you got in yo' pocket?"
And I tell him, "Well, I got about a dollar and a quarter."
He hinda step back a taste and say,
"Dollar and a quarter?
Wait a minute now!
You can't buy much for a dollar and a quarter!"
I said, "I don't want much-
I just want a little bit."
He said, "Well, maybe I can fix you up."
This fella slow down
And a-turn around...
Scratch his head just a little bit
He say,
"I got a i-DEEEEEEEA!!!"
And he said,
"I got the impression that you ain't lookin' for nothin' high class,
Just somethin' to take care of yo' natch'ral needs."
He say, "Look down on the corner. See that girl?
I said, "What girl?"
He said, "The big one!"
"That a GIRL? I thought that was the Brooklyn Bridge."
He say, "How much you got?"
I say, "A dollar and a quarter."
"SOLD! The Brooklyn Bridge!"

So I went down and said,
"The man down the street said I can come home witchoo."
She said, "It's all right now, Daddy,
Show me what you can do."
And don't you know, now, people,
She treated me nice and kind.
She made me
She made me think
She sure did treat me fine
For a buck and a quarter
What more do you want?
For a buck and a quarter!
What more do you want?
Things get goin'
They don't be slowin'
Cooked on this side
Say now, Mama, won't you roll on over
Let me jump on your wagon and ride
Let me jump on your wagon and ride, now baby
Let me jump on your wagon and ride
Let me jump on your wagon and ride, now Mama
Jump on your wagon and ride
That's all I need
A little bit of love
A little bit of love in my soul
And a whole other kind of places
And a whole other kind of taste-es
That's all I need
That's all I got to get, now
All right!

[Instrumental]

Cost me a buck and a quarter
For my pony ride
Twenty more dollars
When the doctor was by my side
He's got that needle
Sayin' "Brother, are you in trouble,
Thinkin' that was the way to go."
She may have been fun
But it wasn't no fun later on
No it wasn't
Went around
All over town
Went around
Over town
Wond'rin' what my lady was up to now
Just a-wond-rin' what she's doin'
While I'm on the prowl
Axed my doctor what to do
He said, "Now, son,
I know just exactly what's wrong with you.
You need a little bit of lovin'
Good ol' love
Nothin' on the side
Need a love, a good ol' love
Don't blow your pride."
I want to tell you now
After I was feelin' so bad
And I had all them troubles
I want to tell you jus' about what happened
Yes I do
Yes I do

If anyone's interested, I've got a tape of an old Deadhead hour which has
got this "Good Lovin'" on it. Takes up most of the second half of the tape.
