115.0. "How do you Decorate your Office" by BIODTL::FERGUSON (Is it just a waste of time?) Tue Feb 05 1991 10:57

This is the "How Did You Decorate Your Office" note.

During the July 1990 Foxboro Stadium show, I took some pictures. I saw this
woman making those huge bubbles and decided to take some up-close shots.
Anyways, I got lucky; One of the pictures came out really nice and very
trippy looking. So, I had it blown up into a 20" x 30" poster. I just
brought it in today; so far, no comments from anybody.

You can see people through the bubble;  you can also see the trees and ski;
everything is very psychedelic looking. I'm going to call it the

I have a large jade plant on my windowsill and a small Greenpeace
lapel pin tacked onto the wall. That's about it. I've moved cubes
so often last year (4 times), I don't bother to put anything up
    anymore.

Maybe we should change the title to "How do you decorate your cube" :-)

Anyhow, I have my decorated with pictures of the boyz, net head
sticker, and various other oddies, and a collection of my favorite
    cartoons.

    For example a SHOE cartoon:

Slide one: Wizard: Is the computer still giving you trouble?....
Person at terminal: No, not anymore...

Slide two: Wizard: What did you do?...

Slide three: Person at the terminal: I turned it off.

Sorry I am not an avid SHOE reader so I don't know the characters names

I just moved into a new office (cube) and haven't had the time to decorate
it yet (although there is a fiscal calendar hanging up). As soon as my
bulletin board gets hung up I've got some pictures of the boyz to hang up
along with a couple work related things.

I have a bunch of postscript pictures (Jerry on Broadway, Bob and Jer
caricature, NTTH, and a Dancing Bear), two 11x17 color xerox blowups of
tie-dyed postcards, a sweet fractal calendar, some stickers, and a
couple of plants. My DECstation 3100 right now has a GIF picture of
Opus about to smash a computer with Oliver sitting behind it. My NCD
terminal (mono) has a black forest with white trees on it and a pair of
cat eyes peaking out from between the trees (also GIF). I haven't
tried putting up the Steal Your Face GIF picture on the monitor yet.
It's a nice one though (but you just can't be too blatant on a customer
govarmint site 8-/ ).

I work from home for a few hours on Thursdays...here's
what my "cube" here looks like...

mostly there's a lot of mass confusion all around me.
I'm in this little bitty corner of my bedroom - a surface
under the eaves of the roof - the terminal and phone and
modem are on this "desktop" Guntis made. Old National
Geographics, various objets d'art from my children, a
couple of boxes of blank tapes, some reference books.
Underneath is my basket full of things that need mending
(will they ever get done!) including my teddy bear who
needs his armpit sewn. There's a big bottle of pennies
under there too in case anyone wants to do some "serious"
	gambling ;-)

on the wall to my immediate left (and I mean immediate)
is a cork board my bro-in-law made for me one Christmas.
It's a piece of wood with champagne and wine corks split
in half glued all over it. On it are a few cartoons,
lots of puppy pictures from when my dog had pups,
some pins (a SYF, a young Jerry Garcia, an "I suffer from
CRS - Can't Remember Shit") and a few Deadshow shots -
one from Lewiston and one from the Greek - I once posted
to the net on how much I loved the banners and someone
	sent me a photo...

Also hanging on the wall is a Latvian calendar which
has all the names days listed (every day is someone's
names day, same day every year, kind of like Saint's days
in some religions)...one of today's names is Valentins
(surprise surprise)...guess he was a saint so it all ties
in somehow. Anyways, I just looked over the list for
February and I don't see anybody from here who has a
names day this month. Although, Chris, Julie's names
day is Feb. 16 - in Latvian her name is Julija...

I couldn't post before because I hadn't gotten around to decorating the
cube yet. Well today I did.
I've got a spiral fractal, a Doonsebury cartoon about the draft, a Bloom
County cartoon/advertisement for the "Banana Junior 6000computer" which says
"Gene Simmons Never Had a Personal Computer When He Was a Kid" (and look what
happened to him!)
I also got ahold of the famous AirJerry postscipt and another ps that's a
scanned photo of Jerry in the early days.
I also have a calendar with old cars on it (for example, February is a 1905
Runabout).
Unfortunately the only thing in color is the calendar. I need some
*serious* color in here folks - tan walls, tan computer, tan rug, tan
chair...well you get the idea.

Incidentally, I also got the Airjerry in bitmap form and am using it as a
background for my workstation...

Later (there's got to be some color around here somewhere...)

Well, it's gonna have to change in a couple weeks, but it'll
     come out really similar.
Right now from the entrance clockwise it starts with boats. I was
given a poster of a maxi or a 50 footer running down wind with the
chute off to port and an asymmetric cute or a genaker off to starboard
with a fleet in chase. Just on the side of that I have a news paper
clipping from the globe, of the boat I was sailing on last August in
Marblehead. The picture is small, but we look like were doing good.
Being on the boat at the time I know there's a slight panic as we've
discovered our spinnaker sheet is inside the life lines.
Then I got something, I think it's a white board. Next is three
panoramic views, 8 frames for the three, from a southern California
desert and one from the top of Sugarloaf with Geoff and Pam getting
     off the lift.
As you turn the corner and move toward my desk/table/bookshelf area
you see a promotional poster from S2 with my boat the only model
completely visible. Next to that is a small poster of two guys sailing
a racing dinghy, like a 505 or a Flying Dutchman. They're both soaked
and the jib hand is on the trapeze. It looks like they capsized, 'cause
there's another one way out of focus ahead. Having been at the helm
and on the trapeze I know it's an intense moment when that frame was
     snapped.
Next to that I've got a few photos of my 470 on lake Chauncey and
in Hopkinton. The breeze was moderate, but one of the shots at Chauncey
     is really good.
Then there's a big blank space and you can notice that the desk space
around my office is mega cluttered. It doesn't stand out, because there
isn't much table top showing anywhere.
In the space between bookshelfs I have about 6 or 7 shots from my
hikes up two of the three sisters mountains in Lane county Oregon.
These are some of my favorite photos of recent, some wonderful
panoramas over the glacier and out along the sky line and one frame
I took from the plane flying out. After I got home I reviewed the photo
comparing it to the hiking map and confirmed it is the mountain cluster
     were we hiked.
Then we move in to more clutter and somewhere in that clutter is a
dusty photo of an SSI 305 in 10x20, used for FA purposes. There are
a couple SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) photos on my desk of marine
growth from my knot meter impeller. They're a little big for the SEM,
but they did just fit in the frame, look kinda like mini lobsters.
On my file cabinet there in a SEM photo of a mosquito. I only have this
one, I wanted two, a before and after shot. (Many years ago a coworker
shot one and labeled it MOS-quito.)
Then on my final wall there is an expired calendar from last year
with the December photo up. It's a calendar of photos from Nikon micro-
scopes. The last page is something on a slide with darkfield illumination,
I think it's a metal film. It looks like a blue snowflake or a blue star.

Then my jacket, time to leave.

     	See Ya'
     	Geoff
