9.1 | created text to file when error? | 31734::MIRASSOU | We've all gone to look for America... | Wed Jan 30 1991 23:06 | 6 |
| I've got a question for all you notes experts. Does anybody know a way
to write the text of a note out to a file when NOTES comes back and
tells you that it can't write the note to the notes files because it
lost the network link? Now I've gotta go type it all in again (sniff!)

You can get the file back with the following steps, once you get
the error message informing you that the network link was lost.
The stuff you typed in is held in a temp file, but I don't think
you can enter any other notes before recovering the one you want.
1) open up a conference, any conference, preferably the one you were
in if it is reachable.
2) get to the note you wanted to reply to if in the same conference,
or any note in another conference.
3) enter REPLY/LAST to the NOTES> prompt, and the text you entered
and lost should re-appear in your edit buffer.
4) if in the conference you want, proceed as usual. Otherwise,
write the text to a file via the editor command for the editor you
are using.

9.3 | ...or use the TPU buffer | NECSC::LEVY | Across the lazy river | Thu Jan 31 1991 21:09 | 13 |
| Another way is to use the TPU buffer directly.
If you lost your link to the other system, at the Notes> prompt, just
type EVE. Then, type <DO> or <PF1 7> and, at the Command: prompt,
enter BUFFER NOTES$EDIT. You should now see the contents of the entry
you were making. Now, you can type <DO> and enter WRITE FOO.BAR and
the contents of the buffer will be written to FOO.BAR on your system.
Then type <DO> and NOTES to return to notes.
Easy, eh?

| First of all, it ain't GRATEFUL.OLD.
The file is accessed as SPICE::GRATEFUL_OLD.NOTE.
You pull something from the file just like any other notesfile.
Use the EXTRACT command to extract a single note or a range of notes:
Notes> EXTRACT TMP.TMP 56.0
The above command will extract note 56.0 to a file called TMP.TMP.
Does this help?

I'll assume that you're not using DECwindows notes.
When you type REPLY, you should get a split screen with the note you're replying
to in the top and your cusor in the bottom.
Press DO and at the Command: prompt, type OTHER<CR>. The cursor moves to the
top window.
Select the text you wish to quote (press SELECT, move to the end, press REMOVE).
Press DO and at the Command: prompt, type OTHER<CR>. The cursor moves to the
bottom window.
Position the cursor where you want it and press INSERT HERE. The text that
was cut out is now inserted into the buffer.
Go back and preface each line with ">" or whatever character you want to use.
Enter your response to the quoted text.

9.13 | how to find a notesfile | VMPIRE::CLARK | sleep in the stars | Mon Dec 16 1991 13:50 | 130 |
| Yo;
For people looking for a notesfile on some subject ....
In .7, Scott mentioned a notesfile, TURRIS::EASYNET_CONFERENCES, which
contains the filespec (and usually a brief description) of all "published"
notesfiles.
There's also a file containing a list of all notesfiles which you can copy
over the net, at ANCHOR""::NET$LIBRARY:EASYNOTES.LIS
So if I wanted to see if there was a notesfile on baseball, for example,
I could get a copy of this file then type
$ search easynotes.lis baseball
and I'd see:
Baseball HECKLE::BASEBALL 2634
Baseball Statistics GUNGHO::BB_STATS 1332
NY METS (Baseball Team) ACESMK::NYMETS 1678
New York Yankees Baseball DSSDEV::YANKEE 3332
Here's the header of EASYNOTES.LIS with more information ....
I. Introduction
DIGITAL INTERNAL USE ONLY
The Digital computer network, known as Easynet, is a private network
for exclusive use by Digital. Computer conferences (or note files)
on various subjects exist on the network, and many are open to all
employees on the network. Conferences thus promote free exchange of
information among employees.
Not all conferences on Easynet are open to all employees. Some
conferences concern specific projects or areas of interest. It would
not be necessary or even appropriate to announce the location of such
conferences.
Some conferences contain information that is proprietary to Digital.
Such information need to be handled with particular care. Corporate
policies require that proprietary information be labeled as such.
The fact that Easynet is NOT public, and that only employees have
access to the network does not eliminate the requirement to comply
with policy.
Of particular interest to people using Notes should be policy 6.54
which deals with the proper use of Digital's network and computer
resources.
TYPES OF CONFERENCES
1. Conferences that are open to all Digital employees and contain no
proprietary information should be announced in EASYNET_CONFERENCES.
2. Conferences that are open to all Digital employees, but contain
information that should not be distributed outside Digital, should
include the DIGITAL INTERNAL USE ONLY notice. Announce these
conferences.
3. Conferences of special interest groups are usually not announced in
EASYNET_CONFERENCES. They may be unrestricted conferences if they
contain no proprietary information.
4. Special interest conferences that contain proprietary information
should be restricted conferences, and should include the DIGITAL
INTERNAL USE ONLY notice. If these conferences are announced, only
name(s) and address(es) of moderator(s) should be given.
5. Special interest conferences that contain highly confidential
material must be restricted conferences and must NOT be announced in
EASYNET_CONFERENCES. The conferences must include a DIGITAL INTERNAL
USE ONLY, DIGITAL CONFIDENTIAL, or DIGITAL RESTRICTED DISTRIBUTION
notice. In latter case, a DO NOT DUPLICATE OR FORWARD type of notice
is also recommended.
6. DIGITAL PERSONAL material should never appear in the types of
conferences listed above. If the Personnel department creates any
private, restricted conferences with DIGITAL PERSONAL data in them,
they must keep them strictly private, restricted, and unannounced.
EASYNOTES.LIS lists all of the announced computer conferences
accessible via the VAX Notes utility on the Easynet.
A VAX Notes Conference for the purpose of helping people new to VAX
Notes exists at OASS::VAXNOTES_INTRO.
VAX Notes documentation is available on-line and may be found at:
CLT::NOTES$DOCS:
INSTALL_GUIDE (.LNO, .LN3, .LPR) Installation Guide (AA-GH96A-TE)
GUIDE_TO_NOTES (.LNO, .LN3, .LPR) Guide to VAX Notes (AI-G98HA-TE)
CALLABLE_MANUAL (.LNO, .LN3, .LPR) Callable Routines (AA-GH00A-TE)
To print the LN01 (.LNO) and LN03 versions (.LN3), you should use the
/PASSALL/NOFEED qualifiers with the DCL PRINT command to insure
proper printing.
** NOTE **
The Callable Routines reference manual is DIGITAL INTERNAL USE ONLY.
New VAX Notes conferences (for use with VAX Notes) are announced in
the conference at TURRIS::EASYNET_CONFERENCES. Note: This is a VAX
Note conference and may only be read using the VAX Notes utility.
EASYNOTES.LIS is updated weekly from conference announcements made in
the VAX Notes conference TURRIS::EASYNET_CONFERENCES. The master
copy is kept at ANCHOR""::NET$LIBRARY:EASYNOTES.LIS. Regional copies
are available at other locations on the network. See the section
'Pointers to Conference Lists' for the locations of these copies.
The list can also be accessed via VTX using the keyword 'EASYNOTES'.
If you have problems accessing a particular conference, try using the
methods suggested in notes 1.* in TURRIS::EASYNET_CONFERENCES before
writing a note in that conference. A summary of these suggestions is
available at CAFEIN::NOTES$LIBRARY:NOTES_PROBLEMS.HINTS which is a
file you can copy to your own account.
Also, if you don't see a particular topic listed in the EASYNOTES
list, you can make inquiries in TURRIS::EASYNET_CONFERENCES.
PLEASE NOTE: NEVER COPY a conference, at least not with the COPY
command, which locks up the file while you are copying it. If you
must make a copy, use the CONVERT/SHARE command instead. VAX Notes
may be used in batch, if interactive access is slow.

If someone has it, could they post it here?

Pretty wild coincidence! I was reading the release notes for NOTES and I came
upon the command procedure for shrinking your notebook. I was just about to
post it here, but someone else did!
It really works, too! I thought my original notebook was about 7000 blocks; it
was actually over 11,000 blocks. After the procedure, it was 138 blocks!

You can always delete your own notes. As long as you are accessing

NECSC::LEVY can delete notes written by NECSC::LEVY.
EZWIND::LEVY cannot delete notes written by NECSC::LEVY.

The 3 key on the keypad is "next reply" which will skip the rest of the current

Am having a terrible time with my workstation and NOTES!
I can log in to Grateful and all, but it seems as though
when I perform an UPDATE from my notes menu (this is on

of unseen entries next to the conference name. I then log in to
Grateful and expect to be able to read the unseen entries,
and the f$ckin thing only gives me maybe 4 or 5 unseen entries,
out of maybe 15 or so it claims that there are waiting to be
read. I then close conference out and the unseen # is 0.
I've tried everything I can possibly think of, including the
little set seen pop up menu, I set the seen for "since" yesterday
"11MAY1992:12:00:00" and then I get every darn entry in Grateful
for my unseen, I have not the desire to read all these entries,
plus even if I wanted to, my system would only let me see a couple
of em.

Did you create the file in your SYS$LOGIN directory?
Also, you need to actually re-enter Notes to get this to take effect, I think
(for example, spawning out of Notes and creating the file won't work).

Yes to the first, and yes I got back into notes after the file create.
Once the file is created and you get back into notes, you do a
notes> dir note#.whatever. Then you read a note. Then you can
press PF1/R to get the dir list back ? That's what I tried to
do and get the message that the key is undefined.

| i'm a bit confused...
let's say i'm reading notes
i type next unseen and get to a note that has a lot of replies that i haven't
yet read
so, i read for a while, but then decide that i'd rather get back to these
replies later, and read from some other base notes
so i type next unseen
do all of the still unseen notes from the base note which i was just reading
from get marked as seen? i'm pretty positive that sometimes this
has happened to me (like last night/this morn when i suddenly went from
well over a hundred notes unseen to no unseen notes in a rather short
amount of time, and i was skipping around), and other times it hasn't
happened (like when there were 50 replies in a note that i didn't care
about, and i kept periodically getting back to them as i typed next
unseen)
on a related note, is there a way to get to the next unseen note from a
particular base note; for instance, if i don't have the time to read
thru all of grateful, but i'd like to see if there are any notes in
the DEChead hiking trip note that i haven't yet read, and i don't
remember offhand the number of the last reply that i have read
also, is there any way to selectively set seen, by base note/reply, instead
of just by date?

As with windows, whether you hit the [NEXT UNSEEN] or if
you type it, I believe that it automatically "seens" all
the unseens in the rest of that topic, therefore you cannot
go back and view them. There are, however, some ways around
this that I am unfamiliar with.

Not that I'm aware of ... you could do Next Unseen fast and furious
until you get to the base note you're interested in, then when you're
done reading that topic, do a SET SEEN/BEFORE=x where 'x' is the date and time
of the first note that showed up when you entered the conference (assuming
you get Next Unseen by default when you enter the conference). Kind of a
pain though.
>also, is there any way to selectively set seen, by base note/reply, instead
> of just by date?
I don't think so ... the SET SEEN command works on all notes in the conference;
all you can do is supply a /BEFORE or /SINCE qualifier.

I was thinking in a simmilar vein on the way in this morning. Usenet
news is out, since that lets in the whole world, including people who just like
to flame, and you'd end up little better off than rec.music.gdead. Having the
access be at a specific dial-up point isn't practical since we're scattered all
over.
The most practical solution I see would be an internet mailing list.
That is, you'd send mail to a given address, and it would forward to the entire
list. There'd be a separate address to send administrative requests (add/remove
from list, etc.). As long as we kept knowledge of it by word of mouth and/or
confined it to decheads and ex-decheads (and those recommended by them), it
might keep the (mostly) friendly atmosphere we have here.
I could set this up (on a non-DEC machine) if anyone is interested.

There are several such entities already in existence. The
most well know is The WELL (Ugh - that wa unintentional -
rilly!). There is also a bulletin board known as Terrapin
Station run by sysop Capt. Trips. There is at least one other
that I've heard about.
All that is needed is a PC or MacIntosh or Amiga or some
electronic box that can run a terminal emulation program and
a modem.

Some of the moderators are doing a clean up in here - deleting stale notes, etc.
Sometimes when we're cleaning up, the deadlock error gets generated.
Just try again. If it comes up again, try again, etc.
The file is going to be compressed this weekend if all goes according to

| Da ve,
We have Teamlinks here and I don't like it. Can't read stuff easily
and notes are weird. Instead, I go lo-tech and use KEA (terminal
emulation) to simulate a VT environment.
Teamlinks is good for attaching files/spreadsheets etc and sending it
out via mail.

| hi Fredda!
well, at least i know it's not just me... :^)
i can do terminal emulation via reflections on my pc... (using it at
the moment) but the environment here is changing, vaxen going away,
client server is king and all that stufff... guess i'm going to have
to just get used to it...
now if i could just figure out why my keypad keys won't work right!!!!
argh!!! it seems like every time i go back and forth, functions
chage...
drive me nuts!!!!!
yeah yeah... i know... short trip... :^)

Oh yeah. Someone mentioned KEA. I must say, this little sucker
is quite the emulator...and it's so easy to install I thought for
sure there had been a mistake.
Does the company that wrote KEA have public stock options?

| here's a dumb question, coming from me :-) ...
I've been using a PC since I moved over to PK2. On my workstation
there was a key (I think it was the upper right key?) that would
display the note you had previously read. It doesn't work on my
PC keyboard. IS there a command to like "read previous note"?
I can't seem to find it in the help.

Dumb question ?? That was a good question, one that I had asked in here a
few months ago ;-);-)
Add the following to a file called NOTES$COMMAND.TPU in your sys$login area
to get KP4 to work for previously-seen-note (and gold-R as described):
Only problem is, you have to run notes with default dir set to sys$login.
I haven't found a way around that.
/Ken
!Put this in a file called notes$command.tpu
!
! define <GOLD>R to toggle display between directory and note
DEFINE_KEY ('NOTES$$SHOW_CTRL_Z', KEY_NAME ("R",SHIFT_KEY),
"TOGGLE_DISPLAY", NOTES$KT_USER_KEYS);
!
! define KP4 as a clone of KP-
DEFINE_KEY(LOOKUP_KEY(MINUS,PROGRAM,NOTES$KT_NOTESKEYS), KP4,
LOOKUP_KEY(MINUS,COMMENT,NOTES$KT_NOTESKEYS),
NOTES$KT_USER_KEYS);

| I've been using Teamlinks for 3+ years and like it. The scripting for mail
is great. Not too many problems with the notes client. A friend of mine,
Tim Sagear (xanadu::sagear) is in the Teamlinks group and might be able to
help you out. Tell him I sent you, he'll kill me :-)

but from this ^ we no longer know who the note is coming from!
make sure you sign those notes!!!
also, you'll be sad to know that looking at this with 80 columns,
you no longer have much of a personal name - it just "the storyt"

welcome to the world of NT!
I now have zero non-NT systems in my office, and 3 NT systems!
love NT...
zendia::, my current clusta, is going to be going bye bye.
since we're mostly pc-focused, i came up w/ the idea of hosting
our group on a measly vs4000 vms machine vs. an expensive 6000-based
clusta. gonna save lots in lab fees, maint, depreciation, fs contracts,
etc... soon, i will be RAGE::JC !!
i still use NOTES from zendia:: and plan on doing it from
RAGE:: for a while anyways...
