    Wharf Rat's pretty straight forward as far as Dead tunes go - it's
    about a guy who meets a panhandler who tells him his life story.
    Not much to read into - except for the guy onthe 'net who insists
    that "Pearly Baker" was a 45 caliber pearl handled Colt revolver. :-)
    
    There's a lyrics file going around. Perhaps someone has a copy that you 
    can scam. It's better than having to post lyrics all the time.

The lyrics file on spice is way old, fun of innacuracies, and in need of some 
good old fashioned tlc.  I have some other files with a few additions, and 
their are some newer lyrics for newer songs spattered around this file and 
Grateful_old.  Maybe someday, I'll find the time to compile them all.

The list originally came for Dave feuerstein, So please don't murder me.

One of my more favorite misguidings from that file:

	"I bought you a pallet for your paper canoe..."

Which I believed for years, imagining a canoe made out of paper sitting on a 
skid before I realized it was paddle, not pallet.  :-}

So, please point out any obvious mistakes for me...

Yes, the lyrics server at Umass went away a while ago, it was fun, but 
didn't last long at all. Bitnet is still there, though.
    

There's an FTP site that has a bunch of lyrics stored on line ... say you
wanted the lyrics to the album "Meddle," you send the following message to
DECWRL::FTPMAIL

connect ftp.uwp.edu
chdir pub/music/lyrics/p/pink.floyd
get meddle
quit

If I wanted to see all the Pink Floyd lyrics available, I could substitute
the "get meddle" above with "dir" to get a directory listing of the 
"pink.floyd" directory.

The directory syntax is
pub/music/lyrics/(first letter of band name)/(band name)

    Until Friday 9-apr-93 (noon) all OK with the procedure given in .43.
    I received several replies that gave me what I asked for. But after
    that time I just received an acknowledge, that's all. And now even
    receive an ack ! Something up Doc ?

Did the acknowledge msg you received say it couldn't connect to the
host, for some reason?  Sometimes the host is down (yes, even if not a
VAX! ;^).

Sometimes a lot of requests get into the queue and it takes a while to
receive a response, too.

    After +- 1 day 1 received the ack ! But I'm still waiting for a request
    that was posted on 9-apr-93 ! That's what I would call " a while".
    Is this "normal" ? (there were >200 requests ahead of me).

Yep, the ack will usually come back right away.  That's just telling you
your request has been entered into the queue.

I have had to wait several days for the results, esp. when there are
over a hundred entries in the queue.  I've also gotten no response at
all, from time to time.

Other than that ... I can't give you much more info on what's going on.
You could try sending mail to the address mentioned in the acks you
receive (the one for problem reports etc.), though they might just
say "wait" or "tough luck try again."  ;^)

The tool "vax ftp" I refered to before is called UCX, or "VMS/ULTRIX
Connection Version 1.3".  I couldn't get into toolshed to look for it, its a
product we sell, though. Also, there is something called  DEC TCP/IP 
Services for OpenVMS V2.0 which I found in vtx spd while searching for the 
first tool...

  DEC TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS is a VMS layered software product that
  promotes interoperability and resource sharing between VMS systems,
  UNIX[R] systems, and other systems that support the TCP/IP and NFS[R] pro-
  tocol suites.

  The product provides capabilities for file access, remote terminal ac-
  cess, remote command execution, remote printing, mail, and applica-
  tion development.

    UCX, VMS/ULTRIX Connection, and DEC TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS are all
    the same product.  You'll need an internet address to use it - which
    you probably get from the same people who hand out DECnet addresses. 
    It will look something like 16.20.n.m  There is a gateway to the
    internet that may or may not permit FTP access to the node you're
    interested in - I'm not sure (I haven't tried, but might later...)

        I think Wake was my favorite cover too.  The guy with the 
        grain and then showing everybody the cloud being a skeleton
        was a gas.

    Just to try to invoke a little levity into a grim situation, I can't 
    help but remember taping the Foxboro concert in 1990 with a 
    bunch of rabid tapers (I believe TDalton was there with his
    clusterfuck of cables) and when a particular line in
    "Eyes" came up, some of the tapers were (quietly) chanting
    "Wake up to find out that you went to bed with a squirrel..."
    
    That was a fun day.  Unfortunately it was also the last time
    I saw Brent.  sigh....
