| | Monkey and the Engineer
	(Jesse Fuller)

Once upon a time there was an engineer
he drove a locomotive both far and near
accompanied by a monkey who would sit on a stool,
a-watchin' ev'rything the engineer would move.

One day the engineer wanted a bite to eat.
He left the monkey sittin' on the driver's seat.
The monkey pulled the throttle, locomotive jumped the gun
and did ninety miles an hour down the main line run.

	 Big locomotive right on time,
big locomotive comin' down the line,
	 big locomotive number ninety nine,
met the engineer with a worried mind.

The engineer called up the dispatcher on the phone,
told 'em all of how his locomotive was gone.
Get on the wire, switch operator to ride
'cause the monkey's got the main line sewed up tight.

Switch operator got the message in time,
said "There's a north bound limited on the same main line.
Open up the switch, I'm gonna let her through the hole
'cause the monkey's got the locomotive under control."

	 Big locomotive right on time,
big locomotive comin' down the line,
	 big locomotive number ninety nine,
met the engineer with a worried mind.

	 Worried mind.
	 Worried mind.

| | Wharf Rat by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter 8/75
Old man down
way down down,
down by the docks of the city.
Blind and dirty,
asking for a dime,
a dime for a cup of coffee,
I got no dime but I got some time to hear his story.
My name is August West,
and I love my Pearly Baker best.
More than my wine,
more than my wine--
more than my maker,
though he's no friend of mine.
Everyone saying
I've come to no good
I knew I would--Pearly, believe them.
Half of my life,
I spent doing time for some other fucker's crime,
the other half found me stumbling round drunk on burgundy wine.
But I'll get back on my feet someday,
The good Lord willing, if he says I may.
I know that the life I'm livin's no good,
I'll get a new start, lead the life I should.
I'll get up and fly away,
I'll get up and fly away,
fly away.
Pearly's been true,
true to me, true to my dying days,
I said to him,
I said to him, I'm sure she's been
I said to him, I'm sure she's been true to you.
Got up and wandered,
wandered downtown, nowhere to go but just hang around.
I gotta girl,
named Bonnie Lee,
I know that girl's been true to me.
I know she's been, I'm sure she's been true to me.

| | Wharf Rat's pretty straight forward as far as Dead tunes go - it's
about a guy who meets a panhandler who tells him his life story.
Not much to read into - except for the guy onthe 'net who insists
that "Pearly Baker" was a 45 caliber pearl handled Colt revolver. :-)

There's a lyrics file going around. Perhaps someone has a copy that you
can scam. It's better than having to post lyrics all the time.

The lyrics file on spice is way old, fun of innacuracies, and in need of some
good old fashioned tlc. I have some other files with a few additions, and
their are some newer lyrics for newer songs spattered around this file and
Grateful_old. Maybe someday, I'll find the time to compile them all.
The list originally came for Dave feuerstein, So please don't murder me.
One of my more favorite misguidings from that file:
"I bought you a pallet for your paper canoe..."
Which I believed for years, imagining a canoe made out of paper sitting on a
skid before I realized it was paddle, not pallet.  :-}
So, please point out any obvious mistakes for me...

    Chorus (roll away...)

I'll tell you where the four winds dwell
in Franklins Tower there hangs a bell
it can ring, turn night to day
it can ring like fire if you lose your way

    Chorus

God save the child who rings that bell
it may have one good ring baby you can't tell
One watch by night, one watch by day

some come to make it just one more day

There is an excellent book of Dylan lyrics available here in the States:

If I wanted to see all the Pink Floyd lyrics available, I could substitute

The directory syntax is

That seems like kind of round-about way, though. There are easier ways...
Like direct anonymous login in via an internet server from an ultrix account..
Or using the ftp utility written for vms. I haven't used it, but I think
its available through toolshed.

Sometimes a lot of requests get into the queue and it takes a while to

your request has been entered into the queue.
I have had to wait several days for the results, esp. when there are
over a hundred entries in the queue. I've also gotten no response at
all, from time to time.
Other than that ... I can't give you much more info on what's going on.
You could try sending mail to the address mentioned in the acks you
receive (the one for problem reports etc.), though they might just
say "wait" or "tough luck try again." ;^)

The tool "vax ftp" I refered to before is called UCX, or "VMS/ULTRIX
Connection Version 1.3". I couldn't get into toolshed to look for it, its a
product we sell, though. Also, there is something called DEC TCP/IP
Services for OpenVMS V2.0 which I found in vtx spd while searching for the
first tool...
DEC TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS is a VMS layered software product that
promotes interoperability and resource sharing between VMS systems,
UNIX[R] systems, and other systems that support the TCP/IP and NFS[R] pro-
  tocol suites.
The product provides capabilities for file access, remote terminal ac-
cess, remote command execution, remote printing, mail, and applica-
  tion development.

| | UCX, VMS/ULTRIX Connection, and DEC TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS are all
the same product. You'll need an internet address to use it - which
you probably get from the same people who hand out DECnet addresses.
It will look something like 16.20.n.m There is a gateway to the
internet that may or may not permit FTP access to the node you're
interested in - I'm not sure (I haven't tried, but might later...)

	Wow!
Anyone have the lyrics to "The Days Between" yet?
Robert Hunter outdid himself on this one.....
I remember at Boston there was a group of people in the first 2 rows,
all huddled up together right in front of Jerry during this song.
It appeared that Jerry was singing right to them, they all watched
as if they were children in front of a story teller. Made for a near
religeous experience from my perspective, can't imagine what those
	folks were thinking. ;-)
	"The lightening of the sun
	 on bright unfocused Eyes"
	"Valentines of flesh and blood
	 Soft as velveteen
	 Hoping love would not foresake
	 the days that lie between"

I Want To Tell You: written by G.Harrison, from the album Revolver.

    I want to tell you
My head is filled with things to say
    When you're here
All those words, they seem to slip away

    When I get near you,
The games begin to drag me down
    It's all right
I'll make you maybe next time around

But if I seem to act unkind
It's only me, it's not my mind
    That is confusing things.

    I want to tell you
I feel hung up but I don't know why,
    I don't mind
I could wait forever, I've got time

Sometimes I wish I knew you well,
Then I could speak my mind and tell you
    Maybe you'd understand

    I want to tell you
I feel hung up but I don't know why,
    I don't mind
I could wait forever, I've got time, I've got time, I've got time

| | Eyes of the World by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter 1/76

Right outside this lazy summer home,
you ain't got time to call your soul a critic, no . . .
Right outside the lazy gate of winter's summer home,
    wonderin' where the nut-thatch winters,
wings a mile long just carried the bird away.

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world,
the heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own.
Wake now discover that you are the song that the morning brings,
the heart has its seasons, its evenings and songs of its own.

There comes a redeemer, and he slowly too fades away,
there follows his wagon behind him that's loaded with clay.
The seeds that were silent all burst into bloom, and decay,
and night comes so quiet, it's close on the heels of the day.

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world,
the heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own.
Wake now discover that you are the song that the morning brings,
the heart has its seasons, its evenings and songs of its own.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own,
sometimes we visit your country and live in your homes,
sometimes we ride on your horses,
    sometimes we walk alone,
sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own.

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world,
the heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own.
Wake now discover that you are the song that the morning brings,
the heart has its seasons, its evenings and songs of its own.

| | Stella Blue
All the years combine, they melt into a dream,
A broken angel sings from a guitar.
In the end there's just a song comes cryin' up the night
Thru all the broken dreams and vanished years.
Stella blue. Stella blue.
When all the cards are down, there's nothing left to see,
There's just the pavement left and broken dreams.
In the end there's still that song comes cryin' like the wind.
Down every lonely street that's ever been
Stella blue. Stella blue.
I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel, can't win for trying.
Dust off those rusty strings just one more time,
Gonna make them shine, shine
It all rolls into one and nothing comes for free,
There's nothing you can hold, for very long.
And when you hear that song come crying like the wind,
It seems like all this life was just a dream.
Stella blue. Stella blue.

        So neat!

| | Almost right. It's Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodleoo.

Just to try to invoke a little levity into a grim situation, I can't
help but remember taping the Foxboro concert in 1990 with a
bunch of rabid tapers (I believe TDalton was there with his
clusterfuck of cables) and when a particular line in
"Eyes" came up, some of the tapers were (quietly) chanting
"Wake up to find out that you went to bed with a squirrel..."

That was a fun day. Unfortunately it was also the last time
    I saw Brent. sigh....

    re - Foxboro

That was a rippin show with many good vibes.

The Eyes was stellar and so were the 2 encores, Last Time &
    We Bid you Goodnight.

| | Franklin's Tower
In another times forgotten space
Your eyes looked from your mother's face
Wallflower seed on the sand and stone
May the four winds blow you safely home.
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
I'll tell you where the four winds dwell
In Franklin's tower there hangs a bell
It can ring, turn night to day
It can ring like fire when you loose your way.
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
God save the child that rings that bell
It may have one good ring, baby, you can't tell
One watch by night, one watch by day
If you get confused listen to the music play.
(instrumental)
Some come to laugh their past away
Some come to make it just one more day
Whichever way your pleasure tends
If you plant ice you're gonna harvest the wind.
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
In Franklin's tower the four winds sleep
Like four lean hounds the lighthouse keep
Wildflower seed on the sand and wind
May the four winds blow you home again.
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
You'd better roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
You'd better roll away the dew - roll away.

have most every song I can think of, and chords for some of them as
well. I've copied it to BASEX::SYS$INFO:ALLSONGS.ZIP.

| | To Lay Me Down by Jerry Garcia, Robert Hunter and Bill Kreutzmann 10/74
To lay me down, once more, to lay me down
with my head in sparklin' clover
let the world go by, all lost in dreamin'
to lay me down, one last time, to lay me down
To be with you, once more, to be with you.
with our bodies close together
let the world go by, like clouds a'streamin'
to lay me down, one last time, to lay me down
to lay me down, to lay me down
to lay me down, one last time, to lay me down
to lie with you, once more, to lie with you
with our dreams entwined together
to wake beside you, my love still sleepin'
to tell sweet lies, one last time and say good night
to lay me down, to lay me down
to lay me down, one last time, to lay me down
to lay me down, one last time, to lay me down
to lay me down, to lay me down
to lay me down, to lay me down
to lay me down

| | Here's the chords to Bird Song (btw: I picked this up from
ftp.nevada.edu/pub/guitar/g/grateful_dead. Lots o' stuff to be had!)

Another side note: it's good to be back from school in Cinti! I
    haven't noted in 6 months.

Bird Song -- Grateful Dead (Hunter, Garcia)

    Intro/Riff: D7--C-D7--C-D7

    D7 Riff
All I heard was something like a bird within her sing,

    D7 Riff
All I know she sang a little while and then flew on,

    Bb F C G D7 Riff
Tell me all that you know and I'll show you snow and rain.

If you hear that same sweet song again will you know why?
Anyone who sings a tune so sweet is passing by.
Laugh in the sunshine, sing, cry in the dark, fly through the night.

    Bm A G D A G D A G D
Don't cry now, don't you cry, don't you cry anymore, la da da da.

    Bm A G D A G D A G
    D D7
Sleep in the stars, don't you cry, dry your eyes on the wind, la da da
    da, da.

Just a note, I believe this is the version on "Garcia," in D, early
    live
versions were also in D but switched to E...
