| Ok, I confess, I worked too hard last week, didn't read Grateful, and
so missed the mail order dates for both Old Orchard and GrateWoods :( :( :(
Is it too late to mail order now?
Is it too early to start grovelling for tix? :)
(yah, I know, phone orders happen on May 25th, but I have never, ever, ever
managed to get tix by phone -- must be cursed; worse still, I'm outta town
on the 25th... sigh)

| I'm 2 for 2 in ordering tickets through Next. They're no bargain and have
what I perceive (and mentioned to them via email) is somewhat less than
upfront as far as revenue recognition. If you get tickets from them the
charge hits your account that month, but you do not receive the tickets
until 2-3 weeks before the concert. So for the 4 Buffett shows, for
example, it's about 40,000 tickets at ~$40 a seat, or $1.6 million. They
get this from mid March until the beginning of August which, without
compounding th interest at a simple 6% gives Don Law an extra 8 grand just
for being the swell fella that he is. My question to them, that I doubt
will get answered never mind implemented, was with their computerized
system they should be able to match the shipment date of the tickets to the
time the charge hits the person's account.

| I'm not defending Law, Next, or ticketshafeter, but:
they have to charge your account now, to ensure that they get paid.
otherwise you could order tickets now,
run your card up to its limit, and when they tried
to charge your account at ticket shipment time,
the charge would not be authorized by the card company.
selling tickets 4-6 months in advance lets them figure out how many
extra shows to book.

Then they should mail the damn tickets immediately. That's
my feeling on the subject. If you're heading out of town,
or if the tix are for someone else, or if you're just the
nervous sort, it doesn't do a hell of a lot of good to hope
they'll show up. Any mistakes or problems with the order
and you're *really* screwed.

Example, when you buy Ticketmaster at an outlet, you get the
billets in your hot little hands instantly. Plus you see
exactly what your seat is.
Can anybody suggest a logical rationale for delaying the
mailing? What does it buy NEXT?

| The reason why major league teams hold tickets until just before the start of
the season is to postpone the start of scalping of tickets. If a show doesn't
sell out, it would be better if the only place to get tickets was from the
vendor of the tickets without competition from resellers.

| I can see it limiting scalping in the sense that these ticket "agencies"
won't have the tickets in hand to sell (i.e., they can't tell you if you're
in the 3rd or 300th row for your $150 a seat). However, they can still get
commitments from the scum who order tickets for them and can size how many
tickets they'll have so they can still offer them and get potential sales.

| One good thing about Next is when you order tickets on the phone, the
computer tells you what section and row you are in.
Here's a weird thing that happened to me. I bought 2 Allman Bros pavillion
tix, from a Next outlet, the day they went on sale. I got section 8, row
M, seats 13-14. Not bad considering I waited til late in the day to buy
the tickets. Then, about a week later, I ordered 2 more pavillion tix for
a friend, using the phone. I got section 7, row T, which in my opinion is
better! It's a few rows further back, but more towards the center. The
woman at the counter told me that they sell tickets from the center out.
Perhaps the section 7 tix were near one of those thick concrete beams that
hold up the roof, and that deemed them worse seats. I was going to email
Next about this, but they'll probably come back saying the good seats were
put back on sale after a bogus credit card tried to order them initially
(which is certainly possible).
