Conference rdvax::grateful

    In the "take it for what it's worth" department, the following
    rumour crossed my email desk today.  I can't vouch for the
    source since I don't know its source - it came to me from a
    friend who didn't say (but I'll ask).


    " The inside line is that Bill Spooner has been asked to
    audition for the Grateful Dead. Bill (like Vince Welnick) was
    a member of the Tubes. Stay tuned for more info........"

      As long as we are starting to post the "likely candidates to fill the
    vacancy" rumors....I've got one.....I was told twice(diff sources) that
    Robert Hunter was going to step in as singer and Dave Grisman would
    fill in on strings and the band hopes to be ready for a spring tour...
    
           this rumor is also BIIYNI....

    fwiw, i can't see Hunter coming in as a vocalist...  a great songwriter
    but i don't think he's up to the task...  i don't think he's got enough
    to cut it as a "only" a vocalist or enough guitar talent to fill the
    slot...  Grisman is a great mando player but i can't see him as a
    permanent replacement either...
    
    now, i WOULD believe that the two of them would be on some sort of
    tribute show/tour/whatever, but i'd be surprised if they were permanent
    additions...
    
    the Spooner rumor seems a bit more believable to me, since they've
    already gone to the well once and had it work out...  with the Vinnie
    connection, it's certainly an "open door" of sorts...  still, i hope we
    dont' get the Grateful Tubes as a result... :^)

    ps.  in talking with GerG, he had mentioned H Kaiser as a potential
    replacement, but in my tiny little mind, i still can't get used to the
    idea of ANYONE replacing Jerry.... :^(

    The thought of somebody replacing Jerry churns my stomach.
    
    If they end up doing it, I feel they should definitely change the name
    of the band.

    A writer at the San Jose Merc had a bit about the guitarist from
    Los Lobos being a possible replacement.  As If.

    Jerry is/waz a hard "very hard" act to follow, after the trouble on the
    last tour and the death of a major ingredient in the band I can't see
    the band comming back as the Grateful Dead. IMO
    
    But I would like to see them come back as a new or different
    configuration with the likes of Jorma from the Airplane/Hot Tuna or Stephen
    Stills and have guest spots on lead guitar/vocal. I really can't see a 
    replacement for Jerry. Its like replacing Morrison from the Doors, or
    Mark Knoffner from the Dire Straits? sp?

    My sentiments exactly.  It was a GREAT ride.  If any of the 3 (Bob,
    Phil, Jerry) had left for whatever reason the essence of the band would
    be irrecoverably lost (IMHO).  The "it" came from the interaction of
    these 3 players (possibly 4 if you count Bill K.).
    
    I really hope that the rest of the band continues in some form.  But
    please don't try to be the Grateful Dead.

    if everybody here is so down on the band continuing to tour/seeing
    someone, in an essence, replace
    how are you all gonna feel when you hear someone else sing Stella Blue
    or Help->Slip->Frank?
    personally, i won't go in negatively
    jerry wouldn't want it that way and i am sure...when he went
    comatose/exhausted before, i am sure Bob, Phil Mick and Bill said to
    him.."Hey Jerry what is gonna happen next time when you DON'T wake up?'

I'd like to see the band become Grateful Menudo and replace the members when
they leave or turn 60.  :-)

    Between Bobby, Phil & Vince's writings, plus, the vast availability of
    traditional folk music, I don't see why they couldn't find a ton of
    tunes to play and many qualified musicians to help. 
    
    I would definitely favor R. Hunter on vocals and Grisman on strings
    over anything I've heard yet.  I've seen Grisman, he totally cranks
    on string instruments....he enjoys a lot of the same music Jerry did.  
    I would go into something like this very positive.

I was thinking about replacements a few days ago.  I thought the idea of a
rotating guest member to fill in would work.  But then I thought, are the
rest of the band (especially Bobby) going to want to deal with rehearsing
tunes with a different person every tour, getting the songs correct with
each different artist?  I doubt it.  And if you don't have someone who
knows the tunes like second nature, there will never be a chance to get
some momentum going during a show or even across multiple shows.  As much
as I hate to say it, I think a single permanent replacement would be the
only way to go.  And of course, change the name.  Maybe the Warlocks?

    in my wrestling with all this, i've come to the conclusion that no one
    will ever replace Jerry...   some one else will play with them, but 
    "replace" is definitely the wrong word...  sure, i'm playing cemantics
    here but it helps me get used to the idea somehow...  :^)  it works in
    other ways too...  fer instance, i like Vinnie, but he hasn't
    "replaced" Brent for me (well, maybe he has *now* but it sure took a
    long time and i still miss Brent)...  
    
    kinda like listening to Yes...  does Trevor Rabin really "replace"
    Steve Howe?  or is he just doing something different?
    
    i've been thinkikng about the new name too...  at first i wanted them
    to change it but now i'm not so sure...  i mean it won't be the same,
    but then again, shows are all different so what the hell?  my first
    thought at a new name was Warlocks, like Adam said...  but now i thinkn
    they should just be "The Dead" if they change it at all...

    IMHO I think if they continue to play, they should add 2 more members
    to the band so the weight of trying to fill Jerry's shoes isn't on 
    one person. (NOBODY can replace Jerry.)
    
    Any vocals of Jerry's songs have to be so different, to show they arent 
    trying to copy Jerry.
    
    My vote is for a female vocalist.

	The Glen Miller Band played long after he was dead. One of the
	big bands is still around, but it's leader is long gone (the Tom
	Dorsey Band?) (Hell, I think the Glen Miller Band still tours.)
	Keep the name, keep going.
	
	Get someone new, but always have a second person sitting in also.
	Cuz, I agree that 1 person can't fill the Jerry spot. I'd like to
	hear a female voice for a change, too.
	
	But, whatever they decide is fine with me.
	I'm in for whatever happens next.

	well, i've listened to the highgate tape, and i could actually
	understand the words!!  ;-)

    I dont think thet should do JERRY tunes at all except maybe for a rare
    exception.That period is over and to trying to match that is dooming
    yourself to failure.They have to come back with something new,which
    will be the biggest challenge of their careers.But you know they will
    have plenty of support

      This rumor comes from my brother out in California from a friend of 
    a friend who claims that at one time he used to work in the Dead office
    so he has the "inside word"....
    
        The rest of the grateful Dead are ready to go into the studio
    within the next month or so and they are currently seeking a new
    guitar player...Carlos Santana has volunteered his services for 
    the studio work and the band is alledgedly interested in Steve Vai 
    to join up for touring purposes.....BIIYNI...!!!
    
        Anybody else hear anything like this..?....any opinions about

    Steve Vai? Blecccchhhh! Steve Vai played in Whitesnake! He
    doesn't seem like a good match for the Dead. Carlos might be
    interesting, but the boys would have to be on their toes.
    No more lazy stoner noodling. Carlos' playing is razor-sharp.

    Steve Vai played in Whitesnake???  hmm, didn't know that...well, he's
    one hot, pretty awesome guitarist, he played for a spell in Frank
    Zappa's band, and you have to be Sh*t on Fire to get into Zappa's
    band...
    
    I'm still not ready to see anyone else up there...Vai, Santana,
    whomever...

    I'm not into rumoring mongering, but....
    
    We have a friend who is a personal friend of Bob Weir's.  She flew out
    to SF for the memorial service and got to talk to Weir for a real long
    time.  She said then they were leaning towards getting a new guitarist. 
    At that time we were quite shocked that they would even consider going
    on, however, if we look at it from a purely business aspect, they are a
    band and what does a band do? Perform!  They gone on after the deaths
    of Pigpen and Brent, so why not Jerry?

Stevie Vai ?   No way IMO!  He has done some great work with Zappa but
he's really hard edged.  I listened to a cut from a solo album of his
and while it had obvious Zappa influences, it was like a definition of
heavy metal.  Not my cup of tea...

I have a feeling that Henry Kaiser will join the band.

I think he can play ANYTHING and ANY STYLE he wants.  He's that good.

I believe he was one of the guitarists in the movie "Crossroads".

IMO, they wouldn't hire anyone if the candidate wouldn't play "the greatest
hits" the way they want the candidate to.  And following that thought, I 
can't see anyone w/ any real commercial success and creative individuality 
(ie, a  Santana like person)  wanting to join an existing band w/ a huge 
catalog,  huge following and play their songs ... for any length of time.
Sit in maybe but I think that'd be it....

    have Dennis McNally as our guest.  Dennis is the official 
    publicist and biographer for  the Grateful Dead.
    
    
    I hope you'll have some thoughtful questions for him

    Let's have a big round of applause for Dennis!
    
    
    1st question:
    
    
    Question   : So is there any official status of the band at 
    this  point in time?
    
    
    D. McNally  : Gee whiz.  A question I never thought I'd 
    get... OK.  The fact is, even I'm bored with repeating the  
    following answer over and over -- to the point that  I'm  
    getting convinced that nobody believes me anymore.  But it's 
    the truth.  And that is this:  the band has (really and 
    truly)  made exactly two decisions so far.   One is to cut 
    down the size of the GD staff -- more or less putting large 
    parts of the beast into semi-hibernation, so that we can 
    coast for a while.  The second decision was to cancel the 
    fall tour --- I gather you've all noticed that decision.  
    That  really is all they've decided so far.  Believe me, I'm 
    as curious about how this will all  turn out as you are -- 
    and don't know a whole lot more about it.  Sorry about that.  
    Kreutzmann is up on the Northern California coast dealing 
    with the ocean, which is his favorite thing.  Bobby  is 
    working on a special project which I've been  told to not 
    discuss, even though he blabs about it  about once a week to 
    the media.  Anyway, he's  busy.  Phil's having a good time 
    with his family.  Mickey, of course, is hitting things with 
    sticks in his studio.  Which obviously makes him  happy.  
    Vince works out on his Bosendorfer (the high end of all 
    pianos) daily.  They haven't met in  some days, and I've not 
    the first idea when they will.  My theory is that it will 
    take bad weather and boredom to force them to make a 
    decision.  The fact is, after 30 years of making only the 
    decisions they absolutely had to, they've gotten used to 
    doing it their way -- and that won't soon change.  So we'll 
    all wait together.  Meantime, ... naaah, I'll save the sales 
    pitch for later.
    
    
    Question   : Does or did the Dead enjoy playing the southeast 
    in cities such as Atlanta and Charlotte?
    
    D. McNally  : There are three places to play a concert:  
    home, where you can sleep in your own bed;  New York City, 
    because you can't enter Manhattan without being aware of it; 
    and the road.  With very minor differences, there is no 
    distinguishable  (spelling?) difference between Milwaukee and 
    Charlotte -- the hotels are equally ordinary, the  food the 
    same.  The only distinction for band members is the sound of 
    the hall -- and Atlanta and Charlotte fall into the great 
    gray median range of halls.
    
    Geoff Gould  : I would like to tell you all that Dennis is an  
     amazing typist!
    
    
    Question   : Will Grateful Dead productions open the 
    archieves, to  the public now that Jerry is gone and the 
    group is in flux?
    
    D. McNally  : I'm not clear precisely what you mean by open 
    the archives.  If you mean literally open to the public then 
    no, of course not.  If you mean increase the  "vault release" 
    program, then the answer is, like so many you'll hear 
    tonight, I dunno.  Probably   -- certainly we have the next  
    release coming out September 26 -- "100 Year Hall",  which is 
    the show from Frankfurt on April 26, 1972 -- which you 
    probably already knew about.  See how  fast I slid into the 
    pitch?
    
    
    Question   : Is the Dead ever coming back?????Please say yes!
    
    D. McNally  : Well, I've tried out three or four possible 
    answers  already to this one, ranging from silly to serious 
    to cynical to I dunno -- but to avoid  misunderstanding, let 
    me say again that nobody knows.   Let me just say the 
    obvious:  Bobby is 47, which is kinda  young to retire.  Etc. 
    Etc.  These are guys who've been on a schedule for 30 years, 
    and I think they're pretty pleased to not have one in their  
    face just at the moment while they're dealing with  the 
    catastrophe of their lives.  But IN MY OWN PERSONAL OPINION I 
    don't think that that will last  all that terribly long.  As 
    I said, along about the time it gets cold and or boring, 
    they'll deal  with things.
    
    
    Question   : If I may begin, please tell us what will happen 
    in  the future with the Dead and if the new material will be 
    released on an album?
    
    D. McNally  : I'll answer part two, because I can only answer 
    part  one twice tonight.  Answer to part two:  I dunno.  
    There are absolutely no hard plans of any sort in the 
    grateful dead at present except for the release of 100 Year 
    Hall.  Really.  Everything else is speculation.  When the 
    band gets around to deciding, we'll find out.  Sorry if this 
    disappoints you; I assume you 'tuned in' here  to find out 
    specific stuff -- but unfortunately, when I got hired I 
    promised Garcia I'd tell the  truth, which on the whole I've 
    done.  It's too late to go back now.
    
    
    Question   : Dennis: big fan!!!  Bought Desolate Angel day it 
    hit  stores. I worked for a few years up  in Lowell, 
    Tewksbury, Andover, Shawsheen Massachusettes.  Met cool ol' 
    guys who grew up with Kerouac, and one dude who's bro.-in-law 
    was in your  book and remembers you.  I was  elated when you 
    got the Dead gig!!!! Question:  Any more books???  Also 
    thanks!
    
    D. McNally  : Yer very welcome.  I hope the bro-in-law was 
    Billy Koums, a very great guy.  Anyway, I was brought into 
    the GD originally to be the biographer, and in  the very near 
    future, as things cool down a little more, that becomes my 
    main job.  The only sure thing  about it is that it will be 
    called "Waiting To Be Born:  The Story of the Grateful Dead".  
    But --  in the Dead tradition -- you'll have to be very, very 
    patient because I'd say it's 2-3 years  away from 
    publication.  But I do hope you'll stick around for it.
    
    
    Question   : Is Bob currently auditioning new guitarists and 
    if so don't they know any one around the industry that will 
    succeed Jerry?
    
    D. McNally  : No, the item in the New York Daily News is -- 
    like  most gossip items, I guess -- not true.  Bobby was not 
    where they claimed he was, and certainly hasn't gotten around 
    to auditioning guitar players.  You're right, we know a few 
    good ones.  But --  whatever, too early to even guess which 
    way  they'll go.  And by the way, please, please, if you 
    happen to look like Jerry, please do not write me  and -- oh, 
    never mind.
    
    
    Question   : Dennis, what year did you meet Jerry and how did 
    you  get involved with the band?
    
    D. McNally  : I met Jerry first in 1973 after an Old and in 
    the Way  show in New Jersey, where I interviewed him about 
    Neal Cassady for a book I was editing for a man named Al 
    Aronowitz, once a columnist for the  New York Post, an 
    amazing story in his own right who  was then -- and always, I 
    guess -- my mentor.  Then, to make a very complicated story 
    shorter, I met  him again (having published my Kerouac book 
    and having sent it to Jerry and he having read it),   I met 
    him again in 1980 during the Warfield  run when they were 
    looking for a "Jerry's kid" for a skit with Franken and 
    Davis.  He allowed as he liked the book and things proceeded 
    from there.
    
    
    Question   : Dennis, why didn't anyone stop Jerry from doing 
    all  the drugs?
    
    D. McNally  : Those who knew him know how impossible that 
    question is.  People get healthy because they want to.  Jerry 
    was many things, but malleable -- about something he cared 
    about -- was never a word  that applied.  Which is to say, he 
    lived his life the way he chose to.  That includes having 
    made a decision to clean up his life -- about 24 hours  
    before he had a heart attack.
    
    
    Question  : What is your happiest memory of Jerry?
    
    D. McNally  : Jeez, that's one of those open-ended questions 
    that   are impossible to answer on the spot.  I will say that 
    in 1993, Jerry only did three interviews --  which of course 
    was when I spent the most time  with him -- because he was, 
    frankly, in a really  grumpy mood most of the year.  The 
    first two  interviews were done for their own reasons, in   
    particular because one was the BBC, and every American has 
    some reflex  reaction to that... anyway,   those two were 
    early in the year, and given his mood, I just packed it in.  
    Until I got a request   from the American Movie Channel for 
    him to  talk about "the movie that changed me".  He really  
    loved movies, and I mentioned it to him and he went into a 
    twenty minute discourse on all that he  remembered and had 
    learned from "Abbot and Costello   Meet Frankenstein".  
    Hilarious.  The interview was even  better, and you should 
    call AMC and make them run it again.  Jer at his very best -- 
    and that was   about as good as it gets.
    
    
    Question   : Hi Dennis -  is a videocassette available of the 
    film   made from the october '74 concerts  at Winterland?
    
    D. McNally  : Yeah, I'm pretty sure that is so -- call 800 
    CAL DEAD  and ask them for it.  Dunno the cost.
    
    
    Question   : How did you hear the bad news about jerry??
    
    D. McNally  : I got a call from Joel Selvin, the SF Chronicle  
    critic, who'd heard it on the radio.  Then my  phone line 
    exploded (metaphorically speaking) and by   the time I'd 
    finished calling various people inside the organization and 
    then the Marin Coroner's   office, I'd been forced to believe 
    it.
    
    
    Question   : who was the last person to speak to Jerry and 
    did he have any words of wisdom or something?  stupid 
    question - but i was interested.
    
    D. McNally  : Boy, can I hear Garcia giggling over this one.  
    I   mean, putting his name and words of wisdom in the same 
    sentence would have made him very, very full of  giggles.  
    The straight answer to this question  is that I have no idea 
    -- obviously, someone at  the center he was at, and I doubt 
    very highly he said  anything any wiser than ... never mind. 
    
    
    Question   : How much live video does GDP hold?  Are you guys  
     thinking of releasing some choice concert  footage?
    
    D. McNally  : Well, you know that we had a six-camera video 
    shoot   at all the summer stadium shows for the past three  
    or four years, so that's a fair amount of footage.    How 
    much of it was good enough to release is of course the main 
    question, and you'd have to ask the  official in charge of 
    hypercriticality, Dr. Phil Lesh, that.  I would say that the 
    answer is -- enough, I hope.
    
    
    Question   : Dennis,  Will Jerry's art become as big as some 
    of   the greatest artists like Rembrandt?
    
    D. McNally  : Not even in the same ballpark.
    
    
    Question   : Dennis, With all of this stagnant energy out 
    there,   what has been the most inspirational for you and the 
    members of the band?
    
    D. McNally  : I'm really proud of the way that we -- and 'we' 
    is   all of us, the band, all Dead Heads, even, God help  me, 
    most of the media, -- proud of the way that we've   handled 
    this.  The Dead stands for something  -- it stands for a 
    cosmic sense of humor, for a   spirit of adventure, for 
    compassion for our fellow  beings, for skepticism, for some 
    honesty, -- for   whatever the hell you make of it.  We've 
    all got  to grieve -- and then we've all got to go out and  
    honor the example that he, we, you have set for the past 30 
    years.  And we shall.  To quote Hart,   "Failure is not an 
    option."
    
    
    Thanks for having me in front of you.  I'm going to   end 
    this with a frank commercial pitch, mostly  because David 
    Gans and Henry Kaiser are friends of  mine and good guys.  In 
    addition to the 100 Year Hall album, they've got a nice 
    tribute to the scene  (and let me point out that both these 
    albums were in the works long, long before August 9th) from 
    the most important point of view of all, the musical  part of 
    the scene.  This tribute is called "The Music  Never 
    Stopped," and it's a CD of 17 original versions of Dead cover 
    tunes...and if there's one  great use for the Dead (aside 
    from the obvious one  of glorious pleasure), it's as a really 
    cool tool to  use to study American music... original tunes 
    from Dylan, Rev. Gary Davis, and you-name-it.  And,   to coin 
    a phrase, that does it for me, and "We Bid You Goodnight."

    the boys get bored with non tour life

    This rumor is from some friends on the west coast who have some sort
    of connection with the boyz.  One of them is a drummer who works or
    studies with TC, and Phil is involved in some way.  I know, pretty
    obtuse; take it for what it's worth.
    
    Anyway, the rumor is that one guitarist's name that's been brought up
    is a relatively unknown from the east.  The person's name is John Zios
    (or maybe Zeus?) and from tapes these people have heard (and that the
    band has been listening to) he would be a great addition; not a Jerry
    clone or anything but someone who could do old stuff with some of the
    spirit that Jerry had and at the same time bring something new into
    the band.  I'm trying to get copies of these tapes to hear for myself.
    
    Don't know how reliable this is, but it would be kinda cool if with all
    the high profile names being bandied about someone instead came out of
    nowhere.

I haven't heard it, but anything's possible.  I don't like the sound of it. 
I've seen both Buffet and Santana, and I don't think either one would fill
in well.  Maybe Jimmy would sing and Carlos would play.  I don't think
Jimmy's got the guitar chops (although he can sing OK), and Carlos is too

    I would hope the Buffet part is untrue, I have seen him several times,
    good show, ggod time, however gets old after several times, I agree
    with Jay more ticket competition is not needed. Also I think the scene
    would be more out of control.

Being a Buffett fan from way back, I can't see him joining the band but my 
initial thought was, his shows are alot of fun and if the boyz didn't tour 
until summer having Jimmy along for a few gigs (double bill, a few jam 
sessions) might help lift what could likely be a somber mood.

FYI...

You probably already know this but... Dennis McNally mentioned in a recent 
interview that Bobby, Phil, Mickey and Vince (yes, no mention of Billy, 
special guests, or a Jerry replacement) will be playing "music in America" 
some time early next year. The band hasn't gotten together yet to discuss 
it, but will probably do so in the next couple of weeks.

    Collins....but we are stopping by UC Davies in March when we are on our

    There was a small article in the Ny Daily News saturday that said the
    dead are working on putting a new album out,using stuff Jerry had been
    working on and filling in .sort of like the Beatles.It also said in 
    the summer weir's band and mickey harts'band "i didnt know he had one"
    will be touring for 6 weeks.It also implied the Dead may actually play
    again but under a different name.

	well I haven't "spoken" to her lately, but I was just browsing thru 
	the Slipknot pages and noticed that Lisa Yetto is planning to come 
	out here the week of June 9 - she wants to catch a Slipknot show
	and will hook a weekend on either end of the week, depending on 
	their schedule - we don't have to wait that long to have a party, 
	but we sure should have one then!

    Madison Sq Garden and at an undisclosed location in San Francisco
    bay area...  Carlos Santana on lead guitar...  no dates in the rumor
    as it came to me, but supposedly MSG is booked for this...

    ethos and  who might be interested in playing with the guys
    for awhile  (and who the guys might be interested in having
    around)...  one of the others I'd like to see on the same stage

Personally, I think Carlos' speedy, wailing style is more suited to his own
band, but if the other 5 will be there I think I could tolerate it :-)

I just can't see Carlos playing Uncle John's Band, The Wheel, or Wharf Rat.

But, I'm there. :-)

    This part is no rumor: guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody
    have left the Allman Bros.  Rumor (most likely true) is that Dicky Betts
    is shopping for a new slide guitar player to join the summer tour. 
    
    A guitarist from the band "the Agitators" has been mentioned, anyone
    familiar with them?

Dickie should give "Dangerous" Dan Toler a call.  He played with the Bros.
through the late 70's.  There's also Rod Price from Foghat (tho not sure if
he's already comitted to playing with Foghat this summer).

    Danny Toler also was the guit player for the Greg Allman Band, was
    supposed to meet him during their run thru Colo years ago,(as well as
    his percussionist bro) but he had a bad tooth ache.
