The Further Inquiry--Ken Kesey
------------------------------
Published 1990. Hardback, first edition, signed by author. The Merry
Pranksters' 1964 voyage aboard Further is probably the best known
adventure of an adventurous decade. The Further Inquiry is Kesey's
reexamination of the adventure 25 years later, in the form of the
"trial" of Neal Cassady's spirit--a serious meditation of the '60s
along with 150 previously unpublished color photos. *30.00*
Demon Box--Ken Kesey
--------------------
Published 1986. Hardback, first edition, signed by author. Demon Box
begins where Tom Wolfe's Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test left off, and
according to Kesey is, "a journal of the come down years." In the book
Kesey portrays himself as "Deboree" in this interesting collection of
stories on life after the '60s. *25.00*

"making a movie". 'twould be interesting to se,.. if thats what Key-Z

34.5 | I saw it! | NYEM1::TURNOF | Greetings from the Big Apple | Mon Jan 21 1991 14:14 | 10 |
|
About 15 years ago the Whitney Museum of Art in NYC showed the video
of the bus trip. My friend and I went with all these expectations of
see a great piece of "art". Even in our altered state of mind, it just
seemed like someone's home movies (and not too good at that!). One
thing that struck us was how dated the movie was!
Reread the book - your own visual is probably a better "trip".

| That's funny. Although I've never seen the film, I had heard (perhaps
from a friend, long ago) exactly what you describe - poor quality home
movies. Not surprising, considering their condition at the time. Also
heard that there was a similar effort done in England by the Beatles,
with the well known title of 'Magical Mystery Tour'. Same results.

dam* DJ mumbled the location and I didn't hear it... Some Mall I'm

Ok, I will, but I was thinking of giving it to Randy for his birthday
along with the book and a ticket to see Planet Drum. They're going to
be in Berkeley on his birthday (November 16th). Do you think Randy
would bum if I gave him an opened CD?? If not, I think I'll have to
sneak a listen.
BTW, if this Planet Drum tour is anything like the one I saw in Marin
a couple of years ago, you folks really should check it out! It was
more like theatre than a concert - very wild!!

yeah as we always used to say with the vinyl format:
"we just had to check it out to make sure it didn't skip!"

34.22 | | SKYLRK::TING | Give Peace a Chance!!! | Mon Oct 07 1991 15:31 | 18 |
| Well, I snuck a listen to the Planet Drum CD over the weekend, and
I still say "Get It"!! Although it's hard to remember after two
years, the CD sounds like the concert/play I saw two years ago
by the same name that Mickey and friends put on. "Friends" include
Sikuru Adepoju, Zakir Hussain, Airto Moreira, Babatunde Olatunji,
Flora Purim, Bruce Langhorne, Gordy Ryan, T.H. "Vikku" Vinayakram,
Molonga Casquelord, Giovanni Hidalgo, Frank Colon, Caryl Ohrbach,
and Jeff Sterling. The CD features a variety of percussion pieces
and tribal chanting. There's a little booklet that came with the
CD which describes the various instruments they used for each song.
They range from Portuguese wooden shoes (tamanco) to rain stick to
a Jew's harp. If you didn't like drums during Dead shows, you'd
love this CD; and if you love drums, you're going to be in heaven!!
It gives you pictures of tigers, and lions, and bears (oh my!! 8-)
and forests and tribes gathered around a bonfire doing their rituals.
A wild untamed (yes, I'm being redundant on purpose) CD no one should
be missing in their collection (DISCLAIMER: I do not work for Ryko
Disk nor do I have any benefits in posting this free ad for them ;-).

| A co-worker of mine who is seriously into dealing baseball cards just
handed me a full page ad from a trade mag. The ad is for ROCKCARDS
from some company named BROCKUM....anyways, in the ad it talks about
randomly inserted "Legacy" cards...Series One featuring (you guessed
it) the Grateful Dead...ten different cards in all...there is also a
picture of the Jerry card among the cards they show...Now, lets see...
there are 288 cards in the complete set, 13 cards in a pack,...I wonder
how long and how much it would cost to get the 10 Dead cards... :-o ?
Remember...card collecting is very addicting...so just say NO!

Yes, the rumors are true...
The Golden Road is coming Back!
Blair and Regan are planning to put out a big "double issue" in
late February/early March. This will be the only issue for '92;
maybe they'll do more in '93...
They are seeking letters for their letters column: true stories,
views on how the band sounds, what you think of Bruce and Vince,
JGB, OFTV, Infrared Roses, Bob n Rob, Garcia-Grisman, Deadicated,
the scene outside the shows, and so on...
For the "Funstuff" column, newspaper clips, GD TV & film sightings
are needed. Photos and Dead-related artwork are also needed.
A free tape trader ad comes with each order; limited to ten words
plus your name and address (no phone #'s pleez). Personal messages
are still $3 for 25 words or less; 10 cents for each word more.
Product classified and ads also can also be purchased.
Rush your check or money order for $8 ($10 outside US) payable to
The Golden Road

34.26 | new dead item on the market! | TERAPN::PHYLLIS | Wake, now discover.. | Fri Dec 27 1991 16:05 | 21 |

I just got the coolest present! :-)
It's called "Sunshine Daydreams", and it's a Grateful Dead Journal.
A date book.. but not specific to one year, filled with lots of photos
and graphics. All the important Grateful Dead dates are noted, like
birthdays, and album releases and special shows and stuff. It's really
layed out well and looks great! I almost don't want to write in it
but that's what it's for. It was put together by Herb Greene, so a lot
of the photos will be familiar to you. But many of them have been
superimposed with graphics and take on a whole new dimension!
" This book is dedicated to all you deadheads out there: old and new,
dudes and dudettes, suited and tie-dyed. Without you the Wheel would
not go round. I salute you.
Your pal,
Herb Greene "

There's a new shop in Merrimack NH called "Awearness" ... it's on Dan'l
Webster, a couple of miles past the intersection with Continental Blvd.,
just after the Country Gourmet restaurant on the left. It's actually
in a railroad car on a small section of track. :^) Just a few miles
from MKO.
Lotsa neat hippie-ish jewelry, clothing, incense, paintings, pins, candles,
astrology-related material ... the couple who owns it are a lot of fun to talk
to. Check it out if you get a chance.

My friend Cathy who trades autographs for living just got in an autographed (by

she says Garcia autographs are very saleable (wonder why); something like $200.
It can be seen in her store: Hierlooms of History in Northboro.
Also of interest, an autographed copy of "Steal This Book", by Abbie Hoffman,
in which he scribes: "F*ck Worcester". Think I might grab that one myself. :-)

The American Beauty Album looks like the original Warner release. Its in great
shape on the outside, but the orig sleeve is gone and the album itself has
scratches. Its signed in magic marker in the upper right hand corner. It would
definitely look grate in a frame. Cathy says the san fran collectors are
getting $300 for Garcia signed albums, so she thinks its a grate deal at $200,
but since I've never paid more than $20.00 for an album, I wouldn't know.

| "The Best of Abbie Hoffman" is excerpts from "Revolution for the Hell
of It," "Woodstock Nation," "Steal This Book," and essays and speeches
that he made after he came out of hiding in 1979. One of the better
articles near the end of the book was the article on how he started the
Save the River committee in upstate New York in the 1970s. At the time
he was using the name Barry Freed. During one of the committee's
meetings someone in the audience said that Barry sounded just like the
old Abbie Hoffman, which made Hoffman more than paranoid at the time.
There are two other books by Hoffman available, "Soon to be a Major
Motion Picture" about his life underground during the early 70s, and
"Steal This Urine Test."

Reply-To: [email protected]
Date: Mon, 05 Oct 1992 20:41:08 GMT
Hey Now!!
I recently posted to the net regarding the interest in Grateful
Dead mouse pads. Since then I've received about 80 responses, not
to mention a few responses posted to the net. Many of the people
who wrote said they'd like several pads.
I figured I'd just post back to the net rather than reply to each
person. After all, I can justify a post or two to my employers, but
not a hundred responses. So THANK YOU ALL for your response!!
Well based on the interest we are going to go ahead and put this
thing together! Here's what's up...
The original pad is a way too well known mixture of Aoxomoxoa and
skeletons and candles and mushrooms and... well, you get the idea.
Three of these (14"x20") pads exist and they will never be turned
into a commercial venture <---disclaimer, please note
Several netters warned about copywrite infringement problems. Yeah,
that's kind of scary and we don't need the hassle. A few asked about
what patterns we would use and if we could custom jobs. We decided
to throw this thing open to the world and go with ALL ORIGINAL art!
So here's the plan: We are going to collect artwork from any who
care to donate it. Of these we will mix and match with computer and
camera into one intense design. Or several, I dunno. The final item
will probably be a 10" square of extraordinary magnatude. Plus we're
gonna amass a killer pile of real cool pictures!
If you would like to contribute ORIGINAL artwork, drop me email and
we will work out the details. All artwork must be black and white
ONLY but may be as intricate as you like. The final design will not
just be painted onto the pad, but pressed in relief on the bottom
of a translucient pad. That's why only B&W. If you want to send us
multi colored stuff we will be glad to look at it but will be
unable to use it for pads. You'll also have to sign the art over
to us cause we don't want to get sued by a slew of netheads sometime
down the road (feelin bad)
I'll post more details when I have them.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
On a slightly related note, are there any NeXTheads out there?
I've got a Terrapin Station home directory icon (open and closed)
for NeXT computers only. If you want a copy, drop me mail. Remember,
NeXT ONLY. If you don't have a NeXT, you won't even be able to read
the mail message so don't waste your computer's time.
Oh, and the icon's monochrome, so don't get your hopes up if
you have a turbocolorslab and/or NeXTDimension.

*use* my art, fine, but they want all rights to my art, therefore
denying me the rights to use it. Which would mean, legally, we

photocopies. I plan to keep the originals in case it's needed for a
future printing of shirts.

34.83 | Too bad... | NAC::TRAMP::GRADY | Short arms, and deep pockets... | Wed Oct 07 1992 21:40 | 18 |
| I don't think they understand copyrights. You could grant them
permission to use your art, in writing, effectively granting them a
'license' (like we do with software). That would make it safe for them
to use it, without giving up your ownership of the work. This is done
all the time with everything from GDM stuff to Mickey Mouse (who is one
of the tightest, yet one of the most pervasive)...
Of course, this assumes that your work is copyrighted in the first
place, which most personal art/prose/poetry/software is not.
The owner of a trademark (tm), registered trademark (r), or
copyrighted material (c) can always grant permission to someone else to
use it...with or without any royalties ($)... ;-)
...then again, it's probably not worth the effort of convincing them
that it's ok to do that...they sound a little paranoid. sigh.

i think there are 2 levels of copyrighting something, which offer different
levels of protection; one does involve paying some small fee and registering
your work somewhere (library of congress, perhaps?), but i think that simply
by putting the symbol and the year on your work does constitute a certain
level of copyright
anybody know for sure?

34.85 | | TLE::ABBOT | J. R. "Bob" Dobbs in 92 | Thu Oct 08 1992 12:34 | 13 |
| Yup, the 1977 copyright laws say there's an implied copyright as long
as it's signed and dated. Then once you do this lower-level copyright
you can register it with the copyright office. This probably offers
the owner a higher level of protection since the copyright office's
word is better than yours. Another method of copyrighting that has
worked in courts is to send yourself a copy of the material by
registered mail and leave it sealed.
I'm not copyrighting my design since I borrowed many copyrighted Dead
symbols. Copyrighting this may cause some trouble.

When I wrote my thesis, the 'Cornell University Guide to Thesis Writing'
said basically this:
If you write on the piece of work:
- the copyright symbol-- a 'c' enclosed in a circle
- the word 'Copyright' followed by the current year and
your full legal name
- and the words 'All Rights Reserved'
like:
(c) Copyright 1992 by Jeffrey G. Maggard. All Rights Reserved.
then you are entitled to protection level one under the copyright laws.
This law gives you and only you exclusive rights to your work. In order for
someone else to use your work for a 'monetary gain,' they must first get
your 'expressed written consent.' If they were to use your work for a
monetary gain without your permission, then you would be entitled to sue
for any lossed income on your part, and/or a reasonable amount of their
earnings (i.e. anything you could get out of them).
Level one copyrights do not allow you to sue for punative damages (i.e. you
couldn't get millions from them because they were bad people and stole your
ideas). For that you would have to file a formal copyright with the US
Copyright office. I believe the fee is $60. I think the office is in DC,
area code 202.
The best non-official Copyright is to send an identical copy of the original
work to yourself by certified mail through the US postal service. It would
probably be a good idea to write the copyright line on it while your at it!

I suspect JC's right - I've been programming for 15 years and that's
how it's always been...I've always been pretty anal about making sure
the copyright was there. It has to be on the first page of the module,
preferrably the first line, too. It's only been in the latter half of
that time that there was anything except "(c)" available on dumb vt
keyboards...of course you have to include the word "Copyright" and
the year of release on that line too, so the "(c)" is a bit
superfluous. (A 'bit' superfluous....arr arr. ;-)

I bought it and was pretty disappointed. The only musical performance on it
that is not available commercially in other medium is "She's an Artist", which
IS really nice.
While all the old video stuff is cute, I'd much rather see some more intact

The Infrared Roses computer generated stuff is ok, too.
Frankly, I'd have rather spent my $20.00 on a couple of CDs.

Hard to tell (and handle :-)..it appears to be a collage of different showz..
Now that I think about it Prob may be right..maybe I'll watch it again and

see pigpen sing damnit and stop with all this eMpTV quick cuts shit."
But in any event, I bought it just for the acoustic "She Belongs To Me".
It's got Bob, Phil, and Jerry sitting on chairs playing it. Bob and Jerry
trade off on the lyrics. Ahhhh...Jerry doing acoustic Dylan -- my idea

| I bought it, too, and was disappointed. The quick cuts in "Hard To
Handle" are distracting and too fast. There are a couple of scenes
where you can't tell who is in them! The one scene with the rocking
chair looks like it may be Owlsley but even on pause I couldn't tell.
It's nice to know that there is this type of old footage around in such
good shape, though. Just wish they'd make entire clips available of it,
dammit!
The Egyptian stuff was real nice, and I would have enjoyed seeing more
of this footage than the computer-generated graphics that close it.

Hey now,
Recently I was contacted by a friend of a friend in Indianapolis, who
is marketing Grateful Dead mouse pads, and University Logo mousepads.
These include both mousepads and wristrests (for the prevention of carpel
tunnel syndrome). I got the following information in the mail:
Grateful Dead Mouse Pads for your computer. For details on designs
available send a #10 self-addressed stamped envelope to:
R&J Associates
1427 W. 86th St #184
Indianapolis, IN 46260
I received photocopies of their Dead pads, which included a Skull&Roses
mousepad, a Steal Your Face mousepad, dancing skeletons wristrest,
a dancing bears desk set (pad, wristrest, 4 coasters). I didn't see any
prices listed, however.....
Check it out if interested!

PS: if you're in HLO and want to see it, I have the photocopy somewhere

that's probably because large venues apparently take a huge chunk of the
merchandise revenue, thereby causing the prices to be jacked up. at least
this is according to the response i got from the person in charge of Phish

I gotta agree! I want to receive the GDM catalog etc... and I think
it was ordering Dick's Picks that got me the catelog...
It's the coincidence of also recieveing a National Parks solicitation that got

| I think it had something to do with when Phil went to the six string
bass. For subtle sonic reasons the Phil Zone just wasn't cutting
it when he was on Bob's left. The addition of the two bass strings
blended in this odd way with Bobs caterwauling and caused odd feelings
of paranoia to everyone in the Phil Zone. But they noticed that the
effect was diminished whenever Phil moved closer to the center, and
disappeared entirely when he stood behind or to Bob's right.
So, rather than stand behind Bob the whole show, Jerry gave up being
Bob's right hand man and they took the position we are so familiar with
today. Oddly enough, though I certainly saw them earlier than
this, I don't ever remember noticing the change. Hmmm, I wonder
what that says about me???

| Didn't know what topic to to throw this note under but I guess here is as good
as anywhere else. :-)
I was looking thru the March issue of "Mountain Biking" and when I got
to the back cover I saw that Gary Fisher is coming out with a Grateful
Dead bike.
The ad reads:
"WHAT A LONG, STRANGE TRIP IT'S BEEN"
Twenty-one years to be exact. That's how long Gary Fisher's been in pursuit
of the ever better mountain bike. Blazing the trail toward enlightment,
it's no surprise he met other legends, like the Grateful Dead. Gary's latest
design, the very limited edition Grateful Dead Hoo Koo E Koo, is a tribute
to their mutual quest for greater feats, off the Golden Road.
The Hoo Koo E Koo features a TIG-welded, double-butted Gro-Moly frame USA
built and backed with a lifetime warranty. Hand-picked goods like Rock
Shox's Quadra 21 and faster, shorter rotating GripShift SRT-600 shifters
keep you truckin' off road.
Visit your Fisher dealer to see the Dead bike, live. But do it fast. This
is one Dead tour that wont last forever.
(there is a picture of the bike, and also a picture of Gary Fisher and the
caption under Gary Fisher is: "I collaborated with Prairie Prince, the
Dead's Official artist, to design original "bone art" that any off-roading
DeadHead will dig")
btw..
I havent seen this in the bike shop yet, but I believe the normal Hoo Koo E
Koo is $780 (according to bike mags) so I expect this model to be slightly more.

They didnt have any Grateful Dead Hoo Koo E Koo models in yet.

I guess they are a limited edition and about 1500 of them will be produced.
All I can say is you sure can buy a whole lot of G.D. stickers for your bike

| Though I am a big fan of the Dead, put names on boats that come directly
from lyrics or set lists, I don't need to buy a Gary Fisher bike because it's
got a Dead theme.
Robyn and I went shopping for her bike last summer or sping. We saw the
Gary Fisher offerings in several places and the prices appeared low. But what
I kept seeing on Gary Fisher bikes was high end finishing components before
upgrading the more basic components. We saw front suspension systems on bikes
with low end gear sets. I really got a negative opinion of Gary Fishe rbikes and
wouldn't be inclined to buy one.
I do however like Fisher skis, but it ain't the same Fisher. I can't
remember skiing on Olin skis, which have the Dead icons on them, but I'm not
running to try them.
Now if there's an offering of a tie-dyed spinnaker, and we can afford
it, you might see one on our boat. Now Neil Pryde sails are not in the high
price range and I've seen them win races. Hmm, have to watch how those sails
hold up and watch for the Dead to appear there.
Actually we have a Neil Pryde Dacron cruising genny.
I'll bet there's a Fishe rthat makes sails

seems pretty silly for me. for $150, you could do something a bit more

| My order from GDM included a free Grateful Dead 1996 calendar.
I already have one, so the extra is free to anybody who can pick it up
in ZKO, or can arrange a suitably convenient bier stop...
