51.1What's the situation for technical writers?GR8FUL::WHITEWithout love in a dream...Mon Jun 15 1992 19:3425
        Hey now,

I have a friend who is a technical writer and wants to move to
Massachusetts. She (so you can see there might be some
self-serving motive to this request :-) has some experience and
has just completed a Master's degree.

I've promised to do some investigating for her on what the job
and contracting situation might be. She has no illusions about
finding a full-time, regular employee hire at this time. She is
looking however, for a contract job to last a few months to help
her get settled in the area.

So my request is.... Can you help out with any information? Any
suggestions on people to talk to? How's the writing business at
DEC? Is there work? Do we have excess people? Are we farming
        work out to contractors?

Any info would be appreciated. Send mail or call (DTN 223-7647)
        at your convenience...

        Thanks much,
        Bob

Here's another opportunity at CSC/MA (Shrewsbury). This is for an

that this group is splitting off from the CSC and going to be part of a
new organization called CNS (which has ties to IM&T).

    Interesting work...not easy...

Contact CSCMA::D_DYER (Dennis Dyer) if interested.

Also, we still have open requisitions in the 3rd party interconnect
    support space.

These are still open. If you're in engineering now, this might be a very
propitious opportunity. Also, its a great opportunity to learn IBM SNA.

The following 2 reqs are listed for the Communications Support Team in
the Massachusetts Customer Support Center, at SHR3. Currently there
are 4 open reqs. Both reqs listed below are for the same group.

These positions are in customer technical support 1-800-DIGITAL. We are
looking for individuals with broad knowledge of, or the ability to learn,
various networking, hardware, and operating system platforms. The

We have particular needs for individuals with programming, networks and

This is an excellant opportunity for someone to expand their technical

A rarity these days but I wanted to be sure that anyone in here that
    might be interested knew:

Our group (Software Licensing Technology Group) in Littleton, MA
(LTN2), has 13 signed reqs. we are looking to fill ASAP. At least 6-8
of them are for software engineers at all different levels. At least 2
of them are for technical writers, and at least one of them is for a
    product manager.

We are currently working on an advanced license manager which is
replacement technology for today's LMF. The new license manager will
work on multiple platforms, operate in a networked environment, offer
much greater flexibility in license style support, and a vastly
improved user interface to name a few... And as the existence of this
note proves, this technology is viewed as a key strategy in enabling
cost reductions throughout the company, and incremental software
revenue opportunities as a result of being able to support more
competitive business practices, and better value oriented pricing
    models.

THIS IS AN URGENT REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE

The Mid Atlantic Account Group is currently pursuing a major Systems
Integration opportunity within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for a
Child Support Enforcement System (PACSES) and your name was one of the
names provided to me as either a candidate for one of the positions or
as a potential contact to help locate required resources.

As a part of the proposal, which must be completed by November 23rd,
the Commonwealth requires that Digital identify, by name, certain key
individuals that will be the leaders of this implementation. Once
named these individuals are committed for the project upon award to
    Digital.

This is a fairly long memo so I have broken it down into sections as
    follows:

    	 A. THE POSITIONS we are looking to identify and fill.
    	 B. A RESOURCE MAP which depicts, by job number and name,
individuals who were identified as potential candidates or
candidate locators. We are looking for assistance in these
    	      areas and need your help.
    	 C. The LOGISTICS/SPECIFICS as to what this means and how this
    	      works.
    	 D. A CONTACTS list of who to call with referrals, questions,
    	      where to send resumes, etc.
    	 E. JOB DESCRIPTIONS of each of the specific jobs.
    	 F. PACSES OVERVIEW - a very brief description of what
Pennsylvania Child Support Enforcement System (PACSES) is
    	      about.

I welcome suggestions, questions, and especially candidates.

Thank you in advance for your support and participation.

    Mark Reynolds

    A. THE POSITIONS we are searching for are:

    	 1. Deputy Program Manager
    	 2. Data Conversion Manager
    	 3. Application Engineering and Development Manager
    	 4. Implementation Manager
    	 5. Data Base Administrator
    	 6. Training Manager
    	 7. Networks & Communications/Consultant/Manager
    	 8. Maintenance Manager
    	 9. Quality Assurance Manager
    	 10. Test Manager
    	 11. Pilot/Rollout Manager
    	 12. Technical Services Manager

C. LOGISTICS/SPECIFICS

    a. The proposal submission is December 7th and contract award could be
any time after that but most likely between January-March.
    b. The contract will be complete at the end of 1995 with Digital potentially
    	 providing operational support through 1997.
    c. Once an individual is named, in the proposal, they are committed until
October 1, 1995 unless the Commonwealth authorizes in writing that a
change can take place. In the past this has not been difficult but be
advised that this condition exists in the T's and C's.
    d. The delivery effort will be performed in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (where
the cost of living is low, the traffic is nil, and the people are very
    	 friendly - brief editorial note)
    e. Relocation, Temporary Living, etc., will be offered for these positions
    	 as appropriate.
    f. Upon contract award you would immediately report to Larry Saltzman (the
PACSES Program Manager) and become a member of the PACSES team.

D. CONTACTS

Due to the fact that the majority of the PACSES Team is currently operating
out of Maynard (PKO3), establishing direct contact will be difficult. If
you leave a message on our voice mail, for the below phone numbers, we
will get back to you quickly. Or, if you use electronic mail we will
monitor on a regular basis...many times a day.

    b. Questions about the specific roles and responsibilities of the position.
Contact any one of us, leave a message and a number where you can be
reached, and we will have one of the project managers call you.
    c. Questions about logistics and relocation. Mark Reynolds or Lou Kadetsky.
    d. Setting up interviews. Once you have been pre-screened (i.e.., willing
to commit to the project and work out of Harrisburg) contact any one of
the three and we will immediately schedule the appropriate interviews.

F. PACSES OVERVIEW

Pennsylvania Child Support Enforcement System (PACSES) represents a major
multi-million dollar systems integration opportunity for Digital. This
opportunity is unique because it involves all levels of the government including
federal, state and local. The PACSES RFP was released in September with
contract award anticipated during early 1993.

Child Support Enforcement (CSE) refers to the initiative of collection,
distribution and enforcement of monthly support obligations for children in
families where at least one parent is absent from the home. Often these
individuals cannot afford to support themselves, which can then lead to
dependence upon the welfare system and subsequently a burden on the state and
federal taxpayers. Child support enforcement is a federally funded program
aimed at recovering moneys from the absent parent that were allocated in support
of their estranged children while they were on welfare. In 1988, the federal
government mandated that each state institute a comprehensive uniform statewide
computer system to increase collections in support of the reduction of the
national welfare debt. Ninety percent of the funds to procure the system are
provided by the federal government leaving the remaining ten percent for
Pennsylvania to cover. There are many federal requirements that govern the
procurement and implementation of the program. Requirements specify that
implementation must be completed and in full compliance with federal pre-defined
standards prior to the deadline of October 1, 1995 or the state is subject to
substantial penalties.

Pennsylvania has chosen to segment the procurement into two phases: Phase I
involved retention of a Project Management Consultant (PMC) to write the RFP for
the implementation and management of the contractor for Phase II. Deloitte &
Touche was contracted in December, 1991 as the PMC. Phase II consists of the
applications development, conversion, roll-out, training and ongoing support of
the system across 67 counties in Pennsylvania. The contract will be a minimum
of 46 months with two optional one year extensions making it potentially a six
year contract.

                              CONTEXT SETTING

In support of the Customer-to-Customer Supply Chain initiative, the U.S.
Logistics Services organization has recently announced the implementation
of a Logistics Services Support Network (LSSN) comprised of high performing
Logistics Services Support Centers and Customer Support Consultants. Since
the Customer Support Consultant position is new work, it was necessary and
appropriate to define new job descriptions/codes. These job descriptions/codes
have been completed and approved to support the LSSN.

During the next 12 months, we plan to strategically place approximately
300-350 Customer Support Consultants across the United States, close to our
Customers and Digital Account Teams. In parallel to the placement of
Customer Support Consultants, we expect to fully implement a functional
Logistics Services Support Network in 7 locations during the next 12-18
months. The 7 locations are: Santa Clara, Dallas, Chicago, Alpharetta,
Greenbelt, Piscataway, and Nashua.

Anyone know if there is still an Internet newsgroup for jobs posting?
I tried "misc.jobs.offered@usenet" but it doesn't work.

Anyway, this is from an old acquaintance:

I am posting this on behalf of an acquaintance. Please don't contact me
directly, as I have no direct connection. Feel free to distribute to anyone
you think might be interested.

There is an opportunity for a DIBOL programmer (mostly maintenance work)
with skills in light VMS System Management and user support at a manufacturing
company in New Bedford MA.

This is a full time job, but they are definitely willing to discuss part time
as well.

If this sounds interesting, please contact:

Well, I've been receiving indications that my group will probably be
eliminated by the end of Q4. I've been at DEC since 8/84 and would
like to continue. (This would please the hungry young mouths at my house,
    too.)

For the past nine years I've been producing books like the Systems and
Options Catalogs, the Corporate Telephone Directory, most of the
handbooks and guidebooks produced by DEC, numerous Applications
Catalogs and Software Source Books, and many other promotional
    documents.

If you know of anything for an experienced editor/publishing project
manager, etc., please contact me at TRETOP::SAMILJAN or DTN 234-4755.
    Any leads will be appreciated.

This may seem trivial. However, we've had major problems in the CSC as we
move toward more and more service being done via electronic communication and
less and less via telephone. Many very technical folks are very slow typists.
This drives up cost-per-problem and therefore the cost to deliver support.

    Hi Probs,

I didn't mean to ridicule - it just struck me as funny. I know when I
started out my professional career 18 years ago, I was two-finger
hunt-and-peck typing for a long time - now I probably push 100WPM or
more. Hell, I think I type more words than I talk these days..;-)

guess I can always fall back on my secretarial skills...;-)

from Chris Fields...

Hi Folks,

I'm sure some of you remember who I am, and for those who don't know me I'm a
former DEChead now working for Quantum and very soon I will not be working
for Quantum...I'm being let go due to the fact that all the diskdrives we make
will not be made in Japan at MKE. Smart move on Quantum's part but a bad deal
for me ! I have no time to mope about this so I'm looking for a new job....and
maybe one of you can help me find it ! here is the skinny on just what it is I
can do.

I'm a Mechanical Designer/Draftperson, I've been working for the past 1.5 yrs
doing tooling fixture design for the manufacturing of diskdrive, this also
included the documentation of such tools....I've got 10+ years using UGII and I
just completed training in PRO-E (V15) so I'm very jazzed to starting using
what I just learned...so if anyone knows a group at your site that does
this type of work or is in need of this type of work let me know, I'll fax/
    E-mail/USmail you my resume...

give me a call, 508-770-2113 or e-mail me at [email protected]

Thanks for reading this and I hope someone can help out...

Chris

We are looking for Unix performance people. The ideal person would already
know about Oracle or other databases as well as Unix performance. A big
plus would be cluster experience.

Know anyone? Send em my way.

thanks,
bob h
