70.0. "Tape Trades - Requests & Offers" by GR8FUL::WHITE (She sang a little while...) Wed Jan 09 1991 16:07

Use this topic for tape trading. Make that plea for a special
show, offer that great new soundboard, make Gerry Gladu's
year by finding a copy of 10/2/72, etc.

	Please, no digressions...

tucked into my long-winded Dark Star nomination was a request for
	the complete 3/28/73 Springfield MA...

I only have the last bit of the 2nd set (5 songs, which take up a
tape and a half!) - I've seen the complete set list - there were
	THIRTY songs played that night...

anyways, I'm reposting my request in case it got lost in my ramblings.

I have a very good copy if you need it: SBD, "A-" quality.

THe 1st 3 tunes are not good quality, but the rest is. However, I also
have that Farewell to Winterland album that has the 1st 3 tunes. Sounds
fine but I think they cut Fire on the album.

Not sure I'll be able to make the dubbing party though!

    i have a mislabelled tape...go figure...
from the avalon ballroom...it was originally labelled 10-13-68 and the
    set list is as follows

    Dew (small cut) DDHNM con't
    dark Star Other One
    St Stephen> New Potato Caboose
    The 11 Alligator
    DDHNM

i checked the bible and saw one other show a few months later that
resembled this set list as well

    there is much chatter
Jerry says that "they are going to play until they drop" and tells all
to "let go of your bodies people"
Bob segues into one song saying it is a "dance number..foxtrot and a
    ladies choice"
     any help?

I know this stage talk - I have the tape with this, don't remember exactly
the date, but 10-13-68 does sound about right. You sure the Dew and the
Alligator on your tape are from the same show? No cuts, or different sound?
Otherwise the setlist matches up.

Made up a fine tape of some cool acoustic versions of DMB tunes
a while ago ... thought I'd offer it here if anyone's interested.
Some sweet versions of Dave solo, Dave with Tim Reynolds, and a
few guests (see setlist below) ... even if you're not into the
DMB tunes that hit the radio, you'd probably like this tape ...
 fills a 90-minute tape nicely.

If you're up for it, send me personal email at SUBSYS::TURCOTTE

Did anyone manage to latch onto the Unfinished Album Sessions tape that
was treed (analog only) in rec.music.gdead?

It included studio versions of all the 90s Dead originals except the '94
bunch (Samba in the Rain, If the Shoe Fits, Childhood's End).

I missed it -- instead I'm thinking of assembling the 90s originals from
live tapes. I think I have everything somewhere, not necessarily good
versions, except "If the Shoe Fits".

Or, just wait for Phil to get around to finishing something for release.

>	I must've spaced this - JayC, what are you talking about?!?

Those were cuts on the Unfinished Album tape that's circulating.

It's a 100-min analog tape of unfinished studio versions of Dead originals
from the 90s. Sessions must've been in '93, because none of the '94
originals is there (Samba, Shoe, Childhood's End).

The tape was treed in rec.music.gdead. I missed the boat, so was
attempting a grovel here... (See .-3.)

Btw, the consensus from people who've heard the cuts is that they aren't
commercially viable in this form -- still want to hear them though.
I don't trust that Phil's going to let 'em out anytime soon. 8) - JayC.

if'n you have netscape, 3.0 or so, pull down the Window button, and
go to Netscape News. Go to the File header, and click on Add
Newsgroup. Type in rec.music.gdead. You're going to have to
figure out which servers out in CXO support news groups,
http://www.bb.dec.com/ip/news/dec-news-servers.html lists
nntpd2.cxo.dec.com for Colorado Springs. But you can really
use any on that list. And there are likely others. Netscape
may come up with a default for your site. If'n you DON'T have
netscape (but I think you do have some browser, no?) then
on a unix system, you can see if you have, rn, or xrn.
Don't know from those Vaxen though. Somebody else here can
probably point you in the right direction.

If anyone's interested, the infamous .t of rec.music.gdead is running a
DAT and cassette tree for 5/8/77, Cornell, in honor of the 20th
  anniversary.

The DAT seed is: Betty reel > PDM > dbx decode > PCM > DAT.

(As has been commented, you can probably get quality equally or nearly as
good from readers of this conference...)

My main interest is to track this guy's future Picks (Cornell being #1)
2-n. He apparently thinks the best Dead show ever is 5/26/72 Strand
Lyceum London. Wouldn't mind seeing what he'd offer as a seed for that
  (25th anniversary in 2 weeks). - JayC.

haven't seen much of it on anyone's lists, either.

70.83analog extras offerHELIX::CLARKWed May 14 1997 20:1239
Well, several people are raising their hands for tapes, so I guess I
  better make an offer... 8)

Here's the deal: I'm about to receive extra copies of at least 6 analog
tapes. Of those, I can offer 1 copy (one in all, unless "A" tapes can be
spun from a given extra) of the following:

      5/2/70 Harpur College
      4/29/71 Fillmore East
      11/30/73 Boston Music Hall
      5/9/77 Buffalo

For these others, 2nd - nth copies can be spun to order:

      5/8/77 Cornell (see JC's offer in .-?, & I can spin if he's overloaded)
      3/24/93 UNC Chapel Hill

If you need to be Let Down Easy w.r.t. a specific tape you requested 8) ,
I'd be happy to extend this offer to spinning from any "A" seed in my
  possession, for example:

      2/28/69 Fillmore West
10/29/77 Field House N Illinois U <- any Black Peter fans out there?
      7/8/78 Red Rocks (etc.)

I do have to be a little careful what I commit to... With five kids ages
7 to 14 to deal with every evening, I can't even begin setting levels for
  spinning until after 11 PM.

Anyway, I'll post a definitive list of the one-only's after I check 'em
out and can assign sound ratings. I think B+ and above is OK for relative
newbies, like me. (I'm not a taping newbie, just an open-market-trading
  newbie.)

For the first few mailings, the postage is on me. I've been receiving
loads of treasures for postage-only -- gotta work off a load of hubris.

If some moderator-person thinks it's worth it to move 506.238 and beyond
to this topic... whatever. I kept track wherever folks replied. - Jay

So far, upwards of 8 people have raised their hands for various
  combinations of extras...

Assuming all the extras pan out as B+'s or above, here's what might happen.

  Four people will get:
  - 1 of {5/2/70 Harpur, 4/29/71 Fillmore East, 11/30/73 Boston Music Hall,
    5/9/77 Buffalo}
  - 5/8/77 Cornell, if you don't have it & didn't cut a deal elsewhere
  - Any 1 of {2/28/69 Fillmore West, 10/29/77 NIllinois U, 7/8/78 Red Rocks,
    3/24/93 UNC Chapel Hill}

  Everyone else will get:
  - Any 2 of {2/28/69 Fillmore West, 5/8/77 Cornell, 10/29/77 NIllinois U,
7/8/78 Red Rocks, 3/24/93 UNC Chapel Hill} [If you can cut a deal
elsewhere for Cornell, you wind up with 3 shows...]

  Fyi, about the "filler" shows:
  - Red Rocks and UNC are the best known, and seem to be attracting the
least interest. Kind of nice to see, actually.
  - As '69 shows go, 2/28/69 is overshadowed only by 3/1/69 (IMO). Raging
    music.
  - 10/29/77 is one of the routinely sensational '77 shows, probably
trailing the likes of 5/8/77 Cornell, 5/9/77 Buffalo, 02/26/77 San
Bernadino, 05/07/77 Boston Garden, 05/19/77 Fox Theater Atlanta,
06/09/77 Winterland Arena, 09/03/77 Englishtown NJ, and 11/06/77
Binghamton NY in most people's estimation. What distinguishes it for me
is the Black Peter near the end. So if you dig that song...

Anyway, this is a level of spinning I think I can probably handle, once I
dig that 2nd deck out of storage. - JayC.

I'm looking for a crispy copy of Chicago 5-13-77. I've heard all the
'77 tapes mentioned in this string and 5-13 blows them away,
especially the Scarlet>Fire. The show begins with the drummers
pulling a prank which leads to my favorite DBL: "Our short term
memory isn't all it could be, but we can hold a grudge." I've got an
ok copy, but excellent ones should be out there since it was
broadcast over the radio (on WXRT).

70.89analog giveaway offer - updateHELIX::CLARKTue May 20 1997 19:2630
Well, my motherlode of analogs came. (DAT newbies are dumping 'logs in
droves -- watch rec.music.gdead to get in on the action.)

Instead of the 4 or 5 extra/duplicate shows I referred to in my giveaway
  offer, I got *16*.

[Also included were some very reputable shows I had *no idea* were coming.
FBO those with complete & total recall of show dates -- 3/1/69, 5/15/70,
  7/13/84, 6/15/85, 4/1/91, and 10/31/91. Yowza!]

The good news is, I now can give away, say, 5 sets of 3 shows each.
Probably to 5 noters who report the smallest number of Dead show tapes in
  their possession.

Then for anyone else, I can update my tapes list and offer (the couple
dozen from which I know I can spin A's) to trade or spin for blanks in the
  time honored way.

The bad news is, I kinda feel I have to check out these extras,
qualitywise, before I dump 'em on anyone. For example, I spun 2 on the
way in this morning... A 2/26/77 San Bernadino whose previous owner
marked it an "A" is really a "B+" (listenable, reasonable separation, but
flawed etc.). While a 5/8/77 Cornell with no source or lineage listed
whatsoever is an "A". Ya don't know 'til you check it out. (A couple of
the extras are first-gen analogs, SDB/1 and dSBD/1, so that's promising,
  but ya never know.)

Commute time, 90 mins. a day, is my only structured listening time, but
I'll get through 'em as best I can and then offer a list. Watch this
  space... - JayC.

70.93analog extras in sets of 4, ongoing?HELIX::CLARKThu May 22 1997 17:4737
Folks, as I remarked to another noter, it's a great time to be building an
  analog live tapes collection.

Over lunch, I scored another 40 shows at $1 per cassette. Just find
someone who's switching to all-DAT (through rec.music.gdead or whatever)
and let 'em know you're there to help them with their problem. 8)
That is, what do do with all those analog shows that survived every
collection purge, until the day they committed to DAT...

I was thinking, with all this stuff pouring in, maybe I should offer up
extras (as each wave arrives) in a grab-bag spirit, free, admittedly
  unscreened, and postage free.

For example, by just looking at the annotations on the extras I got a week
ago, I could assemble n (this week, n=3) sets of 4 shows. Each recipient
  would get

     (a) 1 low-gen soundboard of a classic show (Deadbase top 20)
     (b) additional tradeable show (low-gen and received from 5-13 votes as
among best of its year in Deadbase)
     (c) additional listenable show (>= B+, based on src/gen or quick sample)
     (d) 1 classic (but not HQ) AUD

One mapping of 3 sets of 4 shows I could assemble this week has the
additional feature of each set including at least 1 show from the 70s,
80s, and 90s, a chronological spread (dumb luck):

  (a) 2/26/77 3/24/93 3/24/93
  (b) 3/3/87 8/18/89 7/3/94
  (c) 3/8/92 9/27/72 4/2/89
  (d) 3/9/92 11/30/73 5/25/77

Is this a reasonable way to give away analog extras to folks with
notalotta tapes? (Seems fair, because lots more is coming & there should
be enough for all... And without hours of screening on my part...)

If not, I welcome any suggestions. - JayC.

My offline partner and I have been circulating a number of
Dead shows that are thought to be unavailable. These are
shows listed at http://www.tiedrich.com/tapelist/ as
"Not A Single Note circulates", or NASN for short. Here are
the shows released so far; two are boards (*), and the rest
are audience tapes:

4-26-77 Passaic NJ 150min (beg Bertha cut)
12-13-78 Tampa FL 90min 2nd set and encore
1-7-79 MSG, NYC 150min (end Around&Around cut)
1-14-79 Utica NY 190min
*3-30-80 Passaic NJ 150min (end St of Circumstance cut)
3-31-80 Passaic NJ 150min
5-2-80 Hampton VA 135min
6-5-80 Tempe AZ 180min
8-26-80 Cleveland OH 130min
10-18-80 New Orleans LA (missing end set 3)
5-13-81 Providence RI 150min (missing end FotD and cowboy medley)
*9-30-81 Edinburgh Scotland 180min (cut bet Est Prophet and Eyes;
cut end Good Lovin'; missing encore US Blues)
12-2-81 Urbana-Champlaign IL 90min 2nd set (missing end Terrapin
through beginning of space; missing encore)
12-7-81 Des Moines IA 90min 2nd set
2-20-82 San Diego CA 150min (missing encore)

The audience tapes are roughly B+, so I don't see these as tapes
for newbies, but rather for completists and folks who were at
the shows.

While I am mainly interested in trades, for karmic reasons I will
dub for blanks and postage for a few people interested in one
show they were at. Please email your list or your website, along
with the shows you are interested in.

I am especially interested in:
rare 1972-74 Dead boards of Dead with Hornsby
Further Fest 96 boards Further Fest 97
 Santana 1971-75 Hot Tuna 1972-73
 NRPS 1972-74 Pretenders before 1984
 Shakti The Who 1974-78

My preferences are: Maxell xlii, no dolby, highspeed dubbing or
autoreverse; mail cases and all; priority mail for 3 or more
tapes.

Let's go from Not A Single Note to the Music Never Stops!!

As for the analog extras in sets of 4 (.93), I've decided to do it, but
modify it to be a little more anarchic.

The idea is, every time more extras arrive, I post a list of what I have
  in each of 4 categories...

       (a) Deadbase top 40 shows, sound A to B+ (SBD/low gen or pristine AUD)
       (b) Deadbase top nnn (100? 200?) shows, A to B+
       (c) A to B+
       (d) Sub B+ (SBG/high gens or less-than-pristine AUDs)

ANyone who's interested gets to pick up to 1 from each category.

The list I posted yesterday pretty much applies, except that the 3/9/92
AUD might be a B+, which would move it up a notch or two... But I'd leave
it in (d) so someone could request 3/8/92 and 3/9/92 as a pair.

  (a) 2/26/77 3/24/93 3/24/93
  (b) 3/3/87 8/18/89 7/3/94
  (c) 3/8/92 9/27/72 4/2/89
  (d) 3/9/92 11/30/73 5/25/77

I'm also going to try to cut & paste in set lists for the shows.

I can either start this Tuesday (adding in set lists) or wait for the next
40 shows to arrive next week... Off to NYC -- hey, maybe I'll run into a
trader or two... 8) - JayC.

not trading material [barring a chain of miracles].

I'll be posting a trading list once I get the other thing (extras) in
motion -- there's about a dozen tapes I can spin A-quality from, and about
a dozen more (some very interesting I think) I can spin A-minus-quality.

I don't think I have this, but just to clarify... I see 2 Philly
locations (for which partial recordings exist) in 1970 -- is it either of
  these? - JayC.
