| > - Does a mean version of "Big River" himself...
Actually, Cash does the mean original, does he not? Circa late 50s?
[I have his first "Big River" on a compilation at home and could check,
but will probably forget... Can't even remember if he wrote it.]
If not the original, it's the version from which the Dead's cover stems
(various folks have observed).
The single-CD compilation I have spans 4 decades and all his labels, and
"Big River" is my favorite thing (among a half dozen gems) on it.
Overall I'm not a huge Cash fan. Have tried to like him in his various
musical personas (original Sun Records rocker, mainstream country star,
friend & supporter of Dylan & rock singer/songwriters, gospel singer, ...).
It's cool how around '56 or so (at least as I hear the records) he was too
roots-country for Sun rockabilly (compared to Elvis, Perkins, Jerry Lee),
but too rockabilly for country playlists. Love guys who straddle genres,
confuse the hell out of everybody...
That American Recordings album got a lot of raves in '94, I should
probably give 'im another crack. - JayC.

Ring of Fire:
They say that love is sweet when hearts like ours meet
I fell for you just like a child
Oh, but the fire was wild.
I fell into a burnin' ring of fire,
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns in a ring of fire
In a ring of fire.
Drop the marachi Mexican horns and lay on the heavy guitar.
Could be a good song for raging vocals.

83.34 | Johnny Cash | JARETH::BSEGAL | | Mon Mar 04 1996 15:24 | 27 |
| Well, it was nice to see my Johnny Cash ticket offer (since taken)
spark some interesting comments.
I *thought* he did the original Big River but wasn't sure. Thanks for
the confirmation.
I'll check into some of those CD suggestions. I always preferred his
rockabilly side. In addition to Big River, though, I love Ring of Fire
too. I'll admit to being old enough to remember when that was a hit on AM
top-40 radio in the 60's. (In some respects, AM and FM radio really was
better back then in its diversity, as opposed to the narrow, segmented
formats of today.)
I've heard the cover of Ring of Fire but couldn't remember who did it.
Social D. eh?
Well, I'll be the "man in black" myself (black leather jacket, black
leather baseball hat, black [sort of] moustache) at the Boston Beer
Works and Avalon Thursday. Hopefully, the weather won't strand him
anywhere prior to then. A small (relativey) rock club venue like the
Avalon should attract more of a serious music crowd than a Las Vegas/show
biz/suit crowd (I'm generalizing, no offense intended) and he'll respond
to that kind of club vibe. He's at Foxwoods Casino in CT this weekend too I
believe, if you miss Thursday.

I was braving the storm to take a group of kids to the Bruins/Islanders

scored with 1:06 left, and starting from that moment the Bs are on a roll...).
But I did wonder how things were going at the ol' Avalon. - JayC.

83.39 | | MKOTS3::JOLLIMORE | On the threshold of a dream | Tue Mar 12 1996 08:43 | 35 |
| Well, it was *crowded*!!
Johnny played about 2 hours. They got a late start, probably due
to the weather. Johnny looked good, but had a nagging cough. I
don't recall the setlist, but the set went like this: he sang and
played a few tunes, then left his band on stage to do a few of
the guitar player's originals. He joined the band again for a
couple of songs, then introduced June Carter and did a couple
tunes with her. Then, left her to do some songs with the band,
and finally joined the stage again to end the show at about 9:30
or so.
Johnny talked to the crowd between songs, as did June, which was
cool. He told some stories, talked a little about his current and
future work (did he mention working with Tom Petty??) He also did
at least one tune from his new album. There was also a song where
a movie screen came down over his head and showed train scenes,
with pictures a of a young Johnny (probably one of the earliest
and oldest music videos ;-) ;-)
Both Johnny and June seemed genuinely appreciative of the crowd,
given the weather. I was a little disappointed at the
shoulder-to-shoulder crowd, but it was nice and toasty warm ;-)
I enjoyed the show very much. I'd never seen Cash before, and if
I never seem him again, I'll always be glad I took the
opportunity. (Thanks to Bob Segal for the tickets, and chris
leblanc for driving in and back w/o incident during the storm!!
:-) I had also never been to the Avalon, and despite the crowd,
it's a cool place to see a show. I kept thinking how grate it
would've been to see JGB there. :-) :-(
well, not much of a review. more like a foggy brain dump. ;-)
but, there ya go ;-)

I thought it was GREAT! 2nd time seeing Johnny for me - 1st one was in

I certainly won't hesitate to see him again!

when they had that 30th-anniversary-of-recording celebration for
Dylan at MSG, I was surprised by the song Johnny Cash and June Carter
selected. I would say, without exception, all the other songs were
so well picked, so well suited for the performers - whether the
words or the style - but theirs, instead of something of a tribute
to their long relationship, they sang "It Ain't Me, Babe".
It didn't fit (in my mind).
I sorta thought that Johnny would do "Girl of the North Country",
as he did with Dylan on record. But, I guess Dylan was saving that
as something extra special for himself at the end...

| wow... i didn't think they would eve allow this kind of show back at
Tanglewood... the last "popular music" act i recall hearing about
there was Dan Fogelberg, many years ago... and he was too loud... :^)

| I think Nanci Griffith might have played the 4th of July show there in
the last year or two. (another in a long list of shows I'd love to see
but haven't had the time, money, or someone to go with. Amy is into the
dead and certain other music, but doesn't share much of my enthusiasm for
folk, sigh...)
