Right now I am listening to Manhattan Center, NYC 5-APR-71. At the
beginning part there is a humorous part - Bobby says "Ok everybody
might try moving back ya know cause then people up here wont' get
crushed and secondly you people up in the sound room have got to put
more bottom on these monitors or I am going to kill." Then Pigpen says
- "The baby faced killer".

| The RECORDS notes has something similar, except they use just the first
lines of the songs. But it would be fun to be able to use lyrics from
anywhere in the song.
Would this be for anyone's songs or just the Dead? It would be more of
a challenge not knowing if some line was by M.C. Hammer or Theresa
Brewer.
Similarly, since the jeopardy topic is dead, I propose to open it to
other topics. Still staying with music-related, but not necessarily
Dead-related. We're full of enough trivia to keep it going forever.

| Standing on The Moon
(Hunter,Garcia)
Standing on the moon, I got no cobweb on my shoe
Standing on the moon, I'm feeling so alone and blue
I see the Gulf of Mexico as tiny as a tear
the coast of California must be somewhere over here, over here.
Standing on the Moon, I see the battle rage below,
Standing on the moon, I see the soldiers come and go
There's a metal flag beside me someone planted long ago
Old Glory standing stiffly, crimson, white and indigo, indigo
Standing on the moon, there's a shadow on the sun
Standing on the moon, the stars go fading one by one
I hear the cry of victory, another of defeat
A scrap of age old lullaby down some forgotten street.
Standing on the moon, where talk is cheap and vision true
Standing on the moon, but I would rather be with you
Somewhere in San Franciso on a back porch in July,
Just looking up at heaven at this crescent in the sky, in the sky.
I see all of Southeast Asia, I can see El Salvador
I hear the cry of victory, and the other songs of war.
Its like a mighty melody that rings down from the sky
Standing here upon the moon I watch it all roll by, all roll by, all roll by
Standing on the moon, with nothing left to do
A lovely view of heaven but I'd rather be with you
A lovely view of heaven but I'd rather be with you, be with you, be with you...

Yeah Andy, now your gettin' there :) FNX is out of Lynn (close enough)
and they shake it up.
For more alternatives -
Listen to WBRU out of Providence if you are lucky enough to get it,
WMDK out of NH - they can mix the old with the new in a way that
doesn't make you feel like you've just heard that same show
yesterday.
WERS out of Boston - they play a variety and have a reggae show on
on workday eves from 5 to 7 or so.
including those - there are alot more on the left end of the dial but

| When you can determine the name of a song within the first few seconds, you
know you've been listening to your commercial radio station too long. I
pretty much do not listen; when I do, it's brief, typically when I'm just
about home or fumbling for a tape. Sometimes, when I have no tapes and
get to the snapping point w/ the radio, I just listen to the rattles and hum
from my beater, er, car.
One thing that really gets me pissed. Where I work out, they have a radio
they play for everyone. The people that work there are young, like, in
high school. Every time I'm there, it is on WAAF -- the station for teeny
boppers (at least that is the majority of their listener base). They play
some heavy shit music on that station that just gives me a headache.
Sometimes I'll ask if they would change it, and sometimes I get crap back
from Joe Teeny Bopper, then I just ask who is the customer...
Just say no to BS commercial radio. It's like the TV: BrainWashing!

That is a different story. GD is a hobby for me :-). The amount of music
available to radio stations vs. the amount they play is such a small
percentage. This is the thing I have a problem with. How many different
songs have the Boyz released on various albums of the years? And, how
many different ones do you hear on the radio? Small percentage.

Well,.. if being able to determine the song within the first few notes
played is a sign of having listened to a lot of tapes,...
THEN
Being able to name a song before they finish tuning up must be a sign

56.71 | A tribute to WBRU | SPOCK::IRONS | Might as well | Tue May 07 1991 14:00 | 19 |
| WBRU in Providence is a good station. I live in RI so I can get it
good. It's Brown University's station, or supported by Brown, or
whatever. Anyway, Brown students are the dj's. Back in the late 70's,
during the disco daze, they played all the "underground" (at the time)
rock that turned the disco fire to ashes. It was a very low power
station back then; it was hard to get on the other side of Providence!
They played stuff like the Talking Heads, etc. We owe a lot to
stations like this for killing the disco daze! All the ole time
rockers, looking for a breath of fresh air, would tune this station in.
I listen to the station at times; most of the time when I need to look
for a new band to entertain myself. I discovered The Smith's there,
which turned into my second favorite group! I discovered U2 there,
REM, Smithereens way before these groups were close to popularity.
Currently, I don't listen to the station anymore, not because the
station sucks, probably because I don't like the new music that's
coming out recently, recently meaning this year only.

Actually, I think I've gone off about Dancin's before in here (I think).
Basically, I've always considered the tune to be the "indicator tune" of how
the Dead's sound has metamorphized over the years; listen to a 1970 Dancin, a
1973 Dancin, a 1977 Dancin, a 1983 Dancin, and a recent Dancin' and you can
really hear the changes in the band. Yeah, the Fox Theatre tape was an awesome

work, but 100Kmi later it's not new any more. You got an engine,
transmission and rear wheel drive right? Bolts still turn, same ratchet

easier to work on 'cause it's a truck and I don't have to jack it up
unless I'm taking a wheel off.
That remindes me, I should do my front wheel bearings soon.

Easy: rev to 4000, dump the clutch, put it to the wood, and let the
positraction rearend with 60s for meat do the rest.... :-)
of course, w/ your juice-drive, you could simulate that by p[utting it in
neutral, revving the engine to 4-5k, and smacking the sucker into drive
(ouch!!!).... i had a friend that used to do this for fun with his '77
monte....

56.136 | Scirocco = warm south wind, I sail that too | MILKWY::SAMPSON | Driven by the wind | Tue Aug 04 1992 09:57 | 47 |
| You may remember hearing me whine about the whine my truck has been
making. I haven't fixed it yet, but I've acquired the necessary supplement
to enable that repair and activity without disabling the rest of my life.
I'm so far very pleased with my new driver's seat bolted firmly into the
body of an '86 VW Scirocco. It still needs some stuff to make it complete,
but with the fuel consumption conservatively 50% better than a generous
approximation of what the truck would get, the car might just pay for itself.
I need a sticker or two, I want the skeleton imitation of Maxell's
poster, with the roses flying out of the speaker. The car is black and I
think that sticker would be perfect for it. It needs a better stereo, one of
which I own, but before I install that I need the speakers to make it sound
good. Antenna could be used too, but what I really need is better access to
my tapes. And I really want to install a cruise (anti-ticket) control as
it can easily get away from me, it'll hop quicker from from 70 to 80 in
5th gear than my truck would/will.
Mechanically it's pretty sound and doesn't make too many of them. I
didn't like a whirr I was hearing on Friday and clearly identified it as
a wheel bearing. Replaced the rear wheel bearings on Saturday morning and
it is very quiet now. While I did the wheel bearings I found a bad wheel
cylinder. Made a call to the parts store, hopped in my truck and drove up to
pick it up (this is a great reason to have a spare car). I also have to admit
to having a bad/weak syncro on 3rd gear, but the transmission is smooth and
quiet beyond that, nothing like that Mitsubishi trash they put in Ford
trucks. So, I double clutch 3rd gear and cure the symptom. When the truck
is finished and I feel like a transmission expert maybe I'll think about
rebuilding this tranny.
It's a neat little sports car! It's very tight and attached to the road.
I don't know that the speedometer is giving me correct MPH, but according
to Adam's car (hey that's almost a pun) 70-75 really is 70-75. That morning
my neighbor told me that 60-65 had been 55-60 on her speed gauge. So yesterday,
going home, I decided to press it a little from 495 N to Rte.20 west I drove
that ramp at 50, neat car!
I like to believe that I will not loose my cool in this as it just
simply does not have the visibility that I do from my truck. I'm afraid
I can't be seen because my visibility is so reduced. I'm stretched out with
my head about 3' off the ground, from my truck I was easily 5 to 5.5 feet
off the ground. There is something to be said for being able to see what's
happening a half mile up the road. But so far I really like my VW! I still
really like my truck, am happy that I no longer have to burn it out, but if
I'm going to drive something economical and it can be fun too, why not.
I also have to adjust to not being able to carry anything I want at
any time. It won't fit my skis (or take my ski rack), my dinghy oars will
be a trick, mountain bike I don't think so. But it's cool, I got a truck.
Happy with my new driver's seat, and thrilled with the gas mileage!

my car's odometer turned over 100,000 miles on Saturday!
I've put about 60,000 miles on it since October 1994.
I never did give it a name yet - all my other cars have been
20-25 years old - with so much character that they seemed like
they needed names right away. This one, I just could never decide
on one.
I got this reliable and safe car when I was commuting 100 miles
a day up&down Rt. 3 - happened to actually buy it during the
'94 Boston run.
That particular run, Bobby was playing a new guitar? that had
this -very- distinctive sound to it - absolutely no problem
picking him out of the mix. This may have been the run where
he started playing his acoustic every show too? Both guitars
were silver or grey-colored. My car is silver/grey. I was trying
to find a name to connect the two, but couldn't come up with
anything.
This past weekend, Gans' Grateful Dead Hour featured a second
set from an '82 show and Bobby's guitarwork is right out there.
Excellent. In particular, after Eyes and before drumz, he stays
around and jams with Mickey and Bill. Very nice sample of his
distinctive style. I started visualizing the guitarwork - you
can hear how he plays - a kinda long swoop down across the strings
and then a quick turn back up - and it reminded me of the Nike symbol
;-)...
so I'm thinking maybe I'll name my car Nikie - seems like a car name
to me! whattayathink?
