    Yeah I'm back to work today too. Doing all that back-from-2-weeks-off
    crap like catching up on my email and GRATEFUL (of course)
    
    Looks like it'll probably be a quick day though - don't wanna rush
    right back in to it ya know - plus the weather's a good excuse ;^)

    I'm here in Colo....our quick moving storm was on New Years Day and
    yesterday, 40 degrees today and  chinook winds at 40 mph gusts or
    better. 
    
    Our Xmas was grate, but New Years sucked....we lost another good, dear

    I'm here, but not for long.  Turns out I need a chest X-ray cause the
    meds I got aren't working....gonna leave at 3:00.   We got almost 10"
    of fluff here at LKG.  Sure wish I were healthy....I'd be hiking up Mt
    Watatic with my skis.  Oh well, this snow ain't going anywhere for a
    while.  May perhaps?  :-)

    HoliDAZE = Stress fersher...it's a nice time of year, well, 'sposed to
    be anyway, but I'm kinda glad it's over...a fresh start, a positive
    attitude for 1996, and MUSIC comin' outta my ears...my 1st gig with 
    Drama is this Saturday, they'll be keeping me Bizzee, we're playin 4
    out of the next 5 weekends, so Slipknotting etc will be the rare thing,
    but it will Fun to get back on the other side of the mic :)))

    so who's the person with the Dead stickers on their car here in the
    PK2 parking lot? This place is massively conservative compared with
    HLO; I'm amazed to see any deadheads amongst all the senior mamagers
    around here.

    hang in there Dean...I had a nasty chest cold/bronchit-ass a couple of
    months ago that kicked my ass good! New "wonder drugs" that my PPO
    didn't cover fully cost me 65$ and I threw them all away after a couple
    of days on them....adrinalin based drugs for the lungs that made me feel
    worse, etc. 
    
    Yep MNELSON, Pat Calicino was the one that left us on New Years Eve
    day, willow bender extrodinare, single father, mountain man....he was
    thrown from a horse about 6 months ago and impaled by a stick...speared
    him right thru the belly, messing up his guts pretty good...I guess he
    only had 5-7 years left because of that anyway, but still.......we
    loved him....thanks all for the vibes

    Anyway...  Hello everyone...  I'm back!  For a while
    at least.  Finished up my BS in Psych this past
    December and now I'm temping to make some money
    while I figure out what I wanna be when I grow up!
    
    Actually planning on Grad School in the fall...  so
    I may be here for a while!

    Bummer that I couldn't get out last night. Raged with my niece on
    weds and we missed her bus on thurs morning.  Mostly due to
    495 traffic. So we had to stay in and recooperate to make sure
    I got her to the bus station in Worcester heading back to NY
    this morning -- in time to miss the storm hopefully.
    
    We had a blast in Mexico. It was fun hanging out with 
    Crystal (my niece) where she could legally drink (she's 19). Mexico's
    drinking age is 18.   
    
    Cancun is very Americanized now - lots of trendy stuff.. Hard Rock cafe
    Planet Hollywood, Denny's, McDonalds, KFC, etc.   It was a great
    vacation .. lots of fun times and funny things to laugh about trying
    to take day trips with very little spanish to guide us. We enjoyed
    the Raggae bars in the evenings.
    
    Hope to see you guys soon though. Maybe next week I'll be caught
    up here at work, etc. so I can get out for a brew.

Hey !

	Got a nice boot yesterday in the mail, it s the Last Waltz Complete...
below is the write up I saw in the slowhand digest...(btw mine is a 1gen tape 
of the CD)...

It's a nice 4 CD package included a 36 page booklet. This
booklet begins with the announcement that was printed on a
special hand-out received upon entering the show.
This 4 CD set from Cool Daddy Productions is an individually
numbered edition (my copy was 1384/3000) and presents THE
COMPLETE LAST WALTZ concert the way it was originally
performed by THE BAND, ET AL. In both the 1978 LP and film,
the concert was considerably edited and abbreviated, with
songs being randomly shuffled in each release. In addition,
many of the songs were re-recorded in the studio for no
apparent reason. This 4 CD set is the complete FOUR HOUR PLUS
concert!!! The soundquality is excellent!

The following is an abstract of the 36 page booklet!!! 

The Band- Jaime (Robbie) Robertsen, Rick Danko, Levon Helm,
Garth Hudson and Richard Manual- decided that this would be
their last concert. Common sense told them to turn this
concert into what Robbie Robertsen had come to call THE LAST
WALTZ. It was an all-in-one concert and Thanksgiving dinner.
The Band put together a list of friends, associates and
influences from accross America and Canada (and from our side
of the pond, Van Morrison and Eric Clapton).
The Band's farewell concert was on Thanksgiving Day 1976 at
Winterland Ballroom, Winterland, San Francisco, Ca. There were
5,000 fortunate ticket holders.

Disc One contains the first songs which The Band played that
night, songs played without special guests, beginning with a
rousing version of "Up On Cripple Creek" and concluding with a
rambunctious version of "Rag Mama Rag", with Howard Johnson on
tuba.
The parade of guests artists began fittingly with Ronnie
Hawkins. The American's Souths' Dr. John (formerly Mac
Rebenneck) was next along with fellow Louisianan Bobby
Charles. Paul Butterfield supplied the harmonica, and Muddy
Waters took the crowd completely by storm. Eric Clapton came
out next; Robbie Robertsen had to cover the solo on "Further
On Up The Road" when Clapton's guitar strap broke. The two of
them exchanging guitar licks offered an interesting study in
contrasts, with Clapton cool and poised and Robbie as spirited
as ever. Fellow Canadian Neil Young performed "Helpless", Joni
Mitchell contributed a few songs and Neil Diamond came in with
a tune he and Robbie wrote together. Than Van Morrison came in
with an Irish Lullaby. After "Arcadian Driftwood", at
midnight, The Band began the second set with "Chest Fever".
Feeling confident they then played selections from "The Last
Waltz Suite", some of which had been composed that very 
morning. Bob Dylan was next with "Baby, Let Me Follow You
Down". He and The Band harkened all the way back to 1965 when
Dylan first went electric. "Hazel" came off of 1974's Planet
Waves. With "I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have
Met)", they again looked back to those tremendous electric
shows that began eleven years earlier. Robbie invited Dylan to
stay on and lead the finale of "I Shall Be Released". The
guests slowly gathered round the few microphones. Ringo Starr,
Ron Wood and Steven Stills were all late arrivals. Of course,
there were all sorts of party favours backstage. Later it was
Ringo and Levon Helm who fired up the jam session. Wood,
Clapton, Butterfield, Young, Stills and others traded extended
solos for thirty minutes. The evening came to a close, The
Band wrapping it up with "Don't Do It".

Warner Brothers released THE LAST WALTZ in 1978 and at the
same time, Martin Scorsese's film arrived. It is now regarded
as one of the most brilliant concert films ever, weaving
footage of the performances with backstage and other
interviews later conducted with members of The Band. Producers
of the record and the film cut and edited extensively, opting
to shuffle the order of the songs to suit their own aesthetic,
as well as their need for comparative brevity. This 4 CD set
presents all the songs in the order in which they were
actually performed !!!

	my brother has actually 2 8 year old indoor cats (declawed) that
	he must find a home for soon - his daughter has severe asthma,
	which seems to get much worse when the house is closed up for

I think every third cat in the english speaking world is named Felix.

My ex-girlfriend, Karin (whom some of you have met) had three cats,
one of whom was named Felix, despite the fact that it was female.
Felix was a perfect &sshole, a nasty, venomous beast, part Tabby, 
part Tasmanian Devil.  When we moved into the house where I still live
now, Felix tried to take a chunk out of my hand, but only managed to
make it swell to the size of a grapefruit for a week.

As far as I was concerned, Felix was the reason God gave us the
microwave oven...but Karin and her three animals moved out before
I had the chance to 'splain this to Felix.

Good riddance.

kickin' and screamin' all the way.  And then they'd set you in the chair and
the guy giving the haircuts had the ____s to ask you how you wanted it when
he KNEW he only knew how to cut it one and only one way :) :) :) And after
a couple of those you KNEW he only could cut it one way too....

haha!

    I know we discussed this briefly before but not sure where this belongs. 
    Anyway - saw this post on the net and heard from a friend at work here 
    that he's heard similar things on TV.
    
    This from some paper in Long Island named "The Flash" (sounds suspicious

           Jerry Garcia did not leave enough money behind to pay off the
    $35 million in claims filed against his estate, his widow's attorney
    said during a probate hearing.  So a consultant--who worked for the
    estate of Janis Joplin--has been hired to increase the estate's value by
    peddling Garcia's music rights, artwork and film and TV projects.
    Garcia, the Grateful Dead guitarist, died Aug. 9 of a heart attack.
    The estate's value is undertermined.

    I don't know how to answer this or what to say/think....It's bound to
    happen. If there are that many people Jerry owed monies to, then we
    are in for Sugar MAg on a candy commercial....I'm not sure I wouldn't
    be against hearing jerry-jingles on commercials....it might lend a
    little more "respectability" to deadheads..not that I give a sh*T. On
    the other hand I probably would groan if I heard "Walk Me Out" on a Dew
    commercial or any song on any commercial the first few times.

	Jerry is being used by some professor/financial planner type/?
	as a case of how -not- to do correct financial planning.  He should 
	have set up trusts and stuff like that for his kids.  So, say his 
	estate was valued at 10 million, he's going to be taxed about 3.5 
	million right off the top.

	it seems that all sorts of folks are coming forward and making claims
	on his estate - how many will actually hold up in court, remains to
	be seen.

	I was pleased to see it mentioned that he included Mountain Girl
	and her&Kesey's daughter Sunshine in his will.

    Mailed some 12k max points on Dec 30, this week got back no fewer
    than 34 individually wrapped and individually mailed 90 minute 
    tapes!

    Still waiting on the recoton headphones... should make walking
    around the office easier, when the wire from the headphones 
    doesn't yank the workstation off the desk!  (well, almost!)

    As the electrician is rewiring the house for the next week straight and 
    other repairs will be taking place the first annual "Bright lights, 
    Big City" housewarming in lovely downtown Manchester NH  will be taking 
    place on March 2..,.

	this is a bad news/good news goods news/bad news story.
	
	my wife was away in NY over the weekend and was supposed to come
	home yesterday. i got a call at work about 1:45. it was penny,
	and she was crying. she had broken down on the mass pike, but
	fortunately, right at the toll booth in lee. the car had no
	compression, and was making a loud sucking sound attempting to
	start it. she wanted to know what to do: leave the car and drive
	home in a rental, or tow the car home. yikes! don't tow the car
	home it'll cost a fortune! the nice folks at the toll booth had
	already called for towing for her, and i told her to stay with
	the car, find out what's wrong with it, and get it fixed. all she
	had was a credit card, but that's all she needed. i told her to
	call back when she knew what was wrong, and if they couldn't fix
	it today, to get a hotel room and stay overnite.
	
	we she hung up i thought "it sounds like she blew out the #1
	spark plug". why did i think that? i'm not sure, but from what
	she described to me it sounded like she was running on only 3
	cylinders. but, what was wrong with the car?  ;-) anyway, it
	seemed like if that was the problem, it'd be easy to fix and not
	too expensive and she'd be on her way.
	
	about an hour and a half later she called back. it *was* the
	spark plug, and the #1 too! i couldn't believe it. so, they fixed
	it and it only cost about $60, including towing. (she was lucky
	she got an honest towing/service company!)
	
	so, i left work about 4:15 and when i got home there was a phone
	message from baybank taken at 3:45. they wanted to verify a
	transaction on my credit card. it seems when my wife called, she
	had only a visa card. not being able to call collect, she charged
	the call to the visa. baybank noticed the two transactions posted
	to a communication company in western mass, and wanted to know if
	it was us, or if someone had got ahold of our credit card.
	
	so, the bad news was the breakdown, but the good news was it was
	taken care of. and the good news was that baybank watches for
	certain transactions to prevent card fraud, but the bad news is
	big brother is watching.  ;-)

  I think it's kind of cool that a member of Pere Ubu works for Digital...
  Not that I'm necessarily their biggest fan.  But their latest CD lists the
  band members' Internet addresses and, sure enough, there's a .dec.com.

  Lots of professional musicians work at DEC, but it's nice that this one
  actually pokes his head into music conferences now and again.  Until he
  can afford to lose the day job, at least...  - JayC.

    Words of advice from the (stupidly) experienced...
    
    Never, ever, ever, try to karaoke "She Talk to Angels (Black Crowes)"
    unless you're REALLY good. I'm just a little bit worse than really bad,
    and it was completely painful.
    

    Most of the Barnes' family (Patty, me and future Univ student
    Tiffany) spent Sunday and Monday in Fort COllins Colo checking out
    Colorado State Univ. Sunday we checked out the town; breweries,
    headshops, eateries, things for college kids to do, old town section and 
    drove around the campus. 
    Saturday we started at 7;45AM with the univ staff going thru intro's and 
    seminars about CSU. This was a special invitation only day for High 
    School grads with honors that have the grade point avg, ACT scores and 
    other special criteria that the CSU Honors Program is looking for. 
    ended with a guided tour (we already did a self-guided tour) of 
    the campus at 5pm. beers and lunch at a brewery then a 2 hour drive home 
    in the famous winds of the Front Range. Very special time for us. 
    Patty and even Tiffany had some tears in their eyes when they realized 
    that very soon, our time with Tiffany as a child is over.

    love to get together before the evening hunt and "sing". And the more

    the state of colorado, after a massive revamp of our trapping laws,
    caused by input from every special interest group interested in
    trapping from the anti-hunters/trappers to hunters/trappers/
    environmentalist groups and farmers and ranchers has now a bill,
    already passed by the Senate, that would take the power of trapping
    away from the Div of Wildlife and give it to the Dept of Agriculture.
    Which essentially means that farmers and ranchers could kill any
    depredating animal at will. That  means coyetes, bear, lions, beaver,
    skunk, foxes, muskrats, wolves, coons, ...but not limited to these
    species. 
    
    Stupid f*^#ers! The DOW has a job of managing wildlife in this state.
    We, some of the public and our lawmakers,  keep taking more and more of
    that job away from the DOW.

    I could never see the use of the other sh*t they offered. At
    the end, right before the ax fell, We opted for the totally useless,
    stupid, and ugly indoor themomater and humidity registering thing,
    whatever that's called. How stupid...it's always dry in Colo and always
    dry in our house (of humidity that is). I'm thinking of useing it as a
    target next time I go shooting, along with all my service awards that I
    got from DEC over the last 19 years.

Unofficial Trip Report from DECUS/Canada, Vancouver.

Vancouver is a real gem - it took me completely by surprise, really.  In
many ways, it reminded me of San Francisco, but without the hookers.

First of all, the city is gorgeous - spotless, and on the waterfront with
colossal snow-capped mountains to the north.  You can actually see a ski
area, must be fifty miles away, and lit up at night.  One of the
conference rooms on the 34th floor of the Hyatt where the Symposium was
being held had a full wall of picture windows facing the harbor and the
mountains beyond - don't know how anyone could pay attention with a view
like that: simply breathtaking.

The weather was a bit chilly, in the 30's and 40's, but certainly nothing
daunting by Boston standards, and no snow - they rarely get any.

My first night there, I decided to roam around and find some music, and
naturally got lost.  I quickly discovered that Vancouver has a very open
and lively gay community, apparently having wandered into that part of
town...what I found interesting was that the gay bars commonly had signs
at the door saying, "Yes, this is a GAY establishment." Not something
you'd see in the States in most towns, and I thought it was refreshing
that things were that open there...no hassles.

Eventually I did find a place with live music and dancing (does every
town in North America have a place called "The Roxy?")  This place was
jumping, with a live band every night and a packed house to match it -
even on Monday night.  Impressive.

After a couple of days of wandering around, when I wasn't working, I
began to notice more about the people too  - at first I thought it was
just my imagination, but in time it became obvious that Vancouver has an
extraordinary number of extremely attractive women - far beyond the
typical cross-section of the population (and needless to say, much
appreciated by the spectating public, i.e. me).  The ratio was way off
the scale...

In the past six months, I've been to Stockholm, Dublin, New Orleans, San
Francisco and now Vancouver.   Every one of them has been an intriguing
and exciting place to visit, but right now, if I was to choose just one
(and mind you, like many of us here I'm a BIG fan of San Francisco), I'd
probably choose Vancouver.  I highly recommend it.

    little heavy in here this morning, so I'll try to lighten things up
    with a weekend story...
    
    Patty and I took off Sat morning for the Mt. Princeton Hotsprings. 
    We had heard that the wind had been clocked at a constant 50MPH with
    gusts up to 75MPH in the high country. Right outside of Lake George, we
    saw our first Bald Eagle of the winter. This time of year they are
    migrateing back to the rivers and streams looking for fish in the low
    water before spring run-off begins (that's right folks, spring run-off
    time is right around the corner again!) This eagle was perched on top
    of a dead tree (where we have seen the same? eagle for years every
    winter) about 1/2 mile away, but stood out like a diamond as the sun 
    reflected off his white head. We stopped in Buena Vista at Casa Del 
    Sol for some grate mexican food and decided to check out a small hot
    springs we used to frequent about 10 years ago up CottonWood Creek/Pass.
     The owners have changed since then and with the 3 small plastic-type
    hottubs they had years ago, they've built 3 large rock pools. The
    springs comes out of the side of the mountain at 110 degrees, runs thru
    the 3 small "private" plastic tubs at about 105, into the first large
    rock tub at 102, to the next at 100 and the last at about 98 degrees.
    Then the water flows into 3 large goldfish ponds that have koi stocked
    in them. The water would have been hotter if the wind wasn't blowing at
    50 MPH. No way could you get out and lounge around the pool without
    freezing. In a way that was cool, Patty and I had the top large pool
    all to ourselves for about 1/2 hr. before others got brave enough. Neck
    deep all the time with wool hats on, staying right in front of where
    the hottest water entered the pool. The neatest thing about these rock
    pools is the design. Out of nothing but large river rocks and concrete,
    they constructed these ponds with loungers, seats, jets, etc, just like
    a real, vinal/plastic hottub, and the rocks and concrete-work was as
    smooth as a baby's but. Really nice. Patty got soaked out in about 1.5
    hours, I could stayed all day. We went for a *REAL* quick dip in one
    plastic pool where the water was probably 108...Patty lasted about 15
    seconds. again I could stayed all day. Got dressed, had a few beers,
    and hit the road for TumbleDown, driven by the wind. ANd what a wind!
    We'd be driving along at 60 MPH. fighting a side wind of 50MPH on dry
    roads, suddenly, for 25 yards, the road was in whiteout conditions with
    an ice/snow drift across the road. Scary stuff. This is when we saw our
    second Eagle, a *HUGE* Golden about 20 yards off the side of the road
    eating a rabbit. We whipped the Donkey around and snapped about 6-8
    pictures of him scarfing down his lunch before he got wary and took
    off. Amazing animal at that close. Into Tumbledown, met Tom Lawlor and
    Glen Ingalls who had back-country skiied Loveland  Mt. above ALMA.
    Brook Trout and Filiet Mignon for supper, couple of cases of beer. Tom
    and Glen pass out, Patty and I stayed up and played games %^) for awhile. 
    Next morning Tom and Glen take off early to downhill somewhere, we
    sleep till 11, breakfast, clean up and leave for Colo Spgs. In the
    middle of South Park, on the ground about 40 yards off the raod, we see
    our third eagle, another bald eagle, about half the size of the Golden,
    perched on his prey (prob. a dead cow, did ya know that balds are
    basically scavengers and oppotunists where Goldens are actuall
    hunters??) Three eagles in 2 days. The wind must be keeping them low
    and exposing prey. Home and slept like a baby!

	I saw my first bald eagle last year when I was canoeing on a lake
	that we had to carry the canoe over land a bit to get to 
	(i.e. very isolated) - that was such a spectacular sight - it
	was sitting up in the top of a pine and we could see it clear
	across the lake - they are so distinctive, there is no doubt when
	you see one.  We paddled over closer, and THEN, it took off - and
	MAN, those birds are HUGE!  I bet the wingspan was 5-6 feet.  Whoa!

	There's a waterfall near where I live that is such a cool water
	playground.  In some places where the water has been beating into
	the rocks over the years, it has created these deep holes which you
	can actually get into and stand up and lay your arms and shoulders
	over the edge and have the waterfall massage your back.  You can
	get in back of the falls in spots.  Some of the rocks are moss-covered,
	and they're great fun to use as a waterslide.  There's a beautiful
	deep pool at the bottom.  Hot springs sound extremely nice - this water
	I'm talking about is COOOOOLD!

    got home early the other day, grabed a beer and got ready for a star
    trek I hadn't seen. Caught the last 10 mins of Montel, about mix-race
    babies and the non-acceptance of them by some whites *AND* blacks. 
    Immediately after Montel, the "flat-earth" guy (I KNOW who he is now!
    %^) ) had a political ad on touting the need to get back to good ole
    american basic values, etc, with fade in shots of americans socializing
    at work, at school, at play, at church, just about everywhere....not a
    single face of color in the ad. Either a real good trick by the
    Democrats or some really poor planning by the right-wing nazi
    republicans!!!

    No, no, no....i didn't find the Montel show so shocking...I've seen my
    share of racism, on both sides of the color line. what I found more
    ironic than shocking was the Bucky advert *after* a show watched by a
    large amount of black people that didn't show a single person of color
    in the advert....see?

    The notes about Carter dredged up a random memory from some dark corner
    of my brain.  I was pretty young when he was president, but I
    distinctly remember the signing ceremony for the Camp David peace
    accords.  Now I remember why: the signing ceremony interrupted the 2
    hour premier of Battlestar Galactica.  :-)

    Jimmie is a great man, in fact my wife and I went to Plains, Georgia
    last year as a side trip to visit Army son at Ft. Benning.
    It was interesting, we saw Jimmie's house ( right on the road),
    it now has a little guard house and black Chevy Suburbans amid
    the peanut fields.

	speaking of the Allman Bros...I was watching David Letterman last
	week and they were on and he introduced them as playing their
	new Grammy award winning instrumental-of-the-year - and then they
	played "Jessica"!  New?!?  That song is 20+ years old now...and
	-now- they're winning an award for it?

    I thought that was interesting too.  I gather it was on a released
    album last year, probably a live one.

    The Allman Brothers played a NYC stretch recently (last week I think).  
    Rumor has it, during one of the shows Greg Allman was incapable of 
    playing so Page (from Phish) took over and played the rest of the show.

                  IT'S SPRINGTIME In COLORADO SPRINGS!! 
    
    It may still be winter in the high country, but the flowers and birds 
    have made a comeback here in the city and the surrounding foothills. The 
    first male robins showed up this last weekend, for once not during a 
    spring snowstorm too! The Magpies are making nests and making "love" 
    sounds to each other. We have crocus in our front yard blooming...yellow, 
    blue, purple and white. The wild honeysuckle have tiny green buds coming 
    out, the wild bushes up on the mesa have tiny buds too, the daffadils are 
    a couple of days away from blooming and the tulips are a couple of 
    inches high. I saw a samll heard of does yesterday down low near the 
    Garden of the Gods, getting ready to drop their fawns soon. The Redtail 
    and Gosh Hawks are back and getting ready to nest as are the Kestrels or 
    Sparrow hawks. I saw a male Kestrel the day before yesterday in his mating 
    colors, his back rusty red and his cheeks that pale blue. With all the 
    birds of prey, you know the mice and voles are pumping out the babies. 
    The male red wing blackbirds are back and staking out their territory
    on the nearby ponds, warning each other to stay away from their own
    particular cattail patch, trying to attract females that are
    still a state away. The brown hillsides are starting to show a
    slight touch of green to them. I can feel the trout stirring in rivers, 
    lakes and streams still mostly covered by snow and ice. My mind turns
    to memories of aspen groves with bright shining leaves quaking in the
    wind.....but that's summer...let's not rush spring.

this is gorgeous weather we are having.  Possibly my favorite time of year

    My Mom, in Myrtle Beach SC, says spring has begin and the days are 
    averaging about 60-70 degrees.  She's been in the ocean 3 times
    already.  I think I'll give her another surprised visit from her
    loving son.

    They're doing a 14 night run at the Beacon Theatre in NYC.  Opening
    night (which I was at) Dickie came out and said that Greg won't be
    playing too much because he hurt his ribs in a bike accident the week
    before.  Greg only sang two songs and didn't play the whole 2nd set. 
    Yes, Page from Phish came out to play Greg's B3 and keyboard, also the
    women from David Letterman's band came out at one one.  Warren sang
    about 4-5 songs (you know many blues tunes!).
    
    I liked the show, but the people I was with thought they were
    inconsistent (wonder why?).
    
    Also went last Wednesday and have ticket for this Sunday.  I think they
    are on a roll.  But, then they rarely have a truly bad show in my book!
    
    The tour heads down south after NYC, however, they'll be back for a
    shed tour this summer~!

    observations.   I love the way it reveals how many of these

    Does anyone have copies of boyz in Egypt?  I met someone who's
    interested in those tapes.  I explained they weren't very good, but,
    you know some people have to hear it for themselves.
    
    Also, does anyone have the Thursday, Seattle, WA show (5/25/95)?  This
    was one of the most awsome shows I was ever priviledged to be at! 
    
    Oh yeah, went to see the Allman Bros. Sunday night at the Beacon
    Theatre in NYC.  These boys are on a roll.  To close the first set,
    they did a semi-old song called True Gravity into an extended jam,
    which lead to one of the best drum solos ever (and I'm not a big fan of
    drum solos) into a bass solo into (now hold your hats) major hints of
    St. Stephen into The Other One!  Complete that with different shots 
    of Jerry up on the video screen.  I nearly cried!

	this is -so- cool of them!  I had been reading little snippets
	of people saying that they heard bits of this GD song or that
	in the Allman Bros' jams lately - and while I believed that they
	did indeed hear them, I wondered how intentional it was on the
	musicians' part - ya know what I mean?  (and that's only because

	I just dealt with Ticketmaster for Dylan tickets on Saturday.
	(am I allowed to badmouth another company here?!?) - man, they
	s*ck!  For $25 tickets, they added a $5 service fee PER TICKET.
	And then, for good measure, they added another couple bucks as
	a handling fee for the order.  Then had the gall to ask me if
	I'd like to buy a Dylan tshirt from them - what's the service
	charge I asked - he didn't get it!

	I am extremely happy to see GDTS is still in business...

    	I went thru the same sh!t with TM Saturday morning. The person on
    the phone says "Tix are $25 with a $4.75 convenience charge each." I said
    "So, how's that convenient?" They didn't get that either. Then tack on
    $.90 per ticket for the phone processiong and a $25 ticket turns out to
    be $30.65!! Then I too got asked to buy a Dylan T-shirt and a Beatles
    Anthology II CD. WTF?
    
    	After being screwed over by them for Johnny Cash - the person with
    will-call tix never showed up! - and then this weekend, I really hope
    this NEXT thing takes off and creates some competition for TM.
    
    

	Regarding the comments earlier about NEXT. Same as TM just a different  
	name. The same experience. Shed tickets for Jimmy Buffett $50...plus a 	
	$5.00 service charge. Tried for over an hour on the phone never got 	
        tickets. Imediately after tickets were sold out for 2 nights, wrist     
        bands were given out for 2 more nights at the same outlets where the    
        people who just got tickets were.

I got through for lawn tickets for Buffett (assuming they get my address 
right. I put in the correct one, the system mumbled something then it went 
on). 

Except for "Deadapolousa" which will hopefully go through GDTS, Slip Into 
Summer and the Vermont Reggae Festival, I think any other shows I attend 
will be small venues at the door.

    Very good chance I may be moving to Hudson Ma.  Any

    hope everyone had a grate holiday, Easter, beginning of spring,
    sacraficial day or whatever you celebrate this last weekend. We started
    out Friday nite with Shakedown Street...good tunes; an Operator,
    Special requested They Love Each Other for Patty and I, China-->rider, 
    Woke up Sunday morning and some sick friends of mine (turned out to be
    Hoot and Toad) had set up a crucifiction scene in our front yard...
    a larger marshmellow rabbit on a cross surrounded by smaller
    marshmellow bunnies and chickens, with a "roman soldier" bunny with a
    sword that had beheaded one of the other bunnies. Plus bunnies placed
    under our windshild wipers, on the car antennas, etc....pretty freakin
    funny, i must say. Took us all day to figger out who had done this.

    couple of CD's of Dead Interviews...one for 8$ and one for 11$..
    One called "Still Truckin" from 92 and the other I can't remember, but
    both say "These CD's contain no music and are not aprt of the regular
    Arista recordings" or some such sh8t. I came that close to buying both
    but had alredy spent about 400$ on Lindsey and I at the outdoor shop..
    (new heavy duty hiking boots for both of us)

    If you're referring to "Box of Rain" I have that as well. I like it
    alot! Interesting to see how Hunter imagined the songs as he wrote
    them. Some old familiars on that CD don't sound anything like what
    we're used to.

    ya, I belive that is what it was called....every song is one you've
    heard at a  show and none of the "obscure" stuff Hunter does on other

    I was thinking the same thing :-), but when I scanned the article (I was 
    in a store) I got the gist that maybe he was planning on having it
    broadcast in video format over the internet.  The article was giving
    statistics on how only such-and-such percentage of people have internet
    access, and how only a small percentage of those people have internet 
    access with video capabilities.  
    
    If he _is_ planning on going out with a big dose, and dying tripping,
    how much would that have to be for a person like Timothy Leary?

    Tim's always thought a lot of his own ideas.  He's an iconoclast,
    at least he's going out according to his own principles.  Death
    is the last great frontier, if you choose to look at it that way.
    He's going out on his own terms and he's making it an adventure,
    however gruesome that may seem.  What should he do, pine away,
    griefstricken and immobilized?  He's going to die anyway.  He's
    trying to do it as consciously as possible.

    The way I see him, he's a cutting edge kind of guy.  Which
    explains the internet.  He's always been interested in 
    setting back the frontiers of consciousness, group or 
    individual, and for that I respect him (even if I don't
    often know what that means!  I have enough trouble with
    my own extremely limited consciousness!!)

    He wrote an autobiography called Flashback, by the way, if
    you feel like delving into his monstrous ego a bit further.

I've been able to get in for 7:30 most of this week. I used to do it regularly 
and many years ago even earlier. Especially when the weather's nice I like 
early because I can get out early. But normally I get in for 8:00 these 
days because I get Megann on the bus each morning before I go to work. This 
week, however, it's school vacation so I get to come in early.

	Remember getting a week long vacation just because Monday was a sorta 
holiday!!??

    rising is not for everyone. I like getting up early and getting down
    the mountian before all the flatlanders who have moved up the mountain

    takes now, and I would be in a pi%%ed off mood after fighting the

Well, Hannah definitely has canoe-phobia.  We tried to go canoeing at the 
same spot as last year, and she's joking, laughing, making believe she's
a penguin in the life jacket.  But the minute we get in the canoe and
shove off from the shore, she's white knuckled holding onto the
thwarts, crying, shaking in fear, asking to go back to shore.  The
only time she calms down is when we're heading back in, and if we go too
slow, she starts getting antsy again.  Sigh...  At least this time we
put her on shore with mom, and me and Dan headed out a bit more.  Of course,
with me sitting in the stern, and Dan close to me, the bow of the canoe
is sticking out of the water and we're getting blown in circles!  I finally
convinced Dan to scoot up a bit, and I sat where he had been, but with choppy
water, a good stiff breeze, and only one paddler, we didn't have much luck
getting much of any place.  It appears that if we are going to go, it will
have to be Sunday mornings, when Hannah is in Hebrew school, and we have
a few hours to kill.  Maybe someday, right now I think it would take
behavior modification to get over it.  Or if anybody out there feels a 
need to do some canoeing...

	as for control of the canoe: when i used to fish from my canoe,
	i'd troll with an electric motor. in the back of the canoe would
	be me, a battery and the motor. i'd turn the canoe around so my
	seat was closer to the center and put a small cinder block and 3
	window weight strapped together (which i used as an anchor) in
	the front, to keep the nose down. this, in fishing circles, is
	lovingly known as a dead wife. or so i've been told ;-)

    Kent and Tom from Mission:Wolf did  presentations yesterday here in
    COlo SPgs. one during the day at Palmer High (Where Tiffany and Lindsey 
    go to school) and one at Colorado College later that evening. Patty
    and I and a friend went to the CC presentation. Tiffany manned the
    vending table, of course, for both. 
    
    Kent talked about Mission:WOlf's philosophy on keeping any wild
    animal, muchless wolves, how M:W's goal was to let these wolves live
    out their lives as naturally as possible, and how M:W has turned away
    3,000 unwanted wolves in the last couple of years. M:W is the only
    wolf refuge in the world..all other facilities, and there's a bunch in
    Minnasota, Michagan, etc, are reserach centers only...their goal is
    research, not the benifit of the wolf. Mission:Wolf even has some of
    the research wolfs from these centers that were no longer needed.
    
    There was slide show showing the area M:W is located in and a bunch of
    cool shots of the wolves themselves. As an added attraction, Kent had
    some shots of the WOlf efforts in Idaho and Montana...shots of
    Yellowstone with a herd of Bison in the background, a herd of elk off
    to the left and a pack of wolves in the middle. Biologists had thought
    that when these wolves were released, they'd split and never be seen, to
    the contrary, there's so much food and habitat, the wolves have become
    roadside attractions just like the herds of bison and elk. 
    
    Then the highlite...
    Sila, 7 year old Alpha female and Guiness, 2 year old pup, 
    stole the show. EVen though this is about the 5th or 6th time i've seen
    these particular wolves, I got this weird, giddy feeling when they
    came into the room. Guiness was first, he walked around the room and
    said hi to everyone, either thryu eye-contact, licking of the face, or
    submitting by rolling over on his back..then regal, beautiful 135 lb Sila
    came in and put Guiness in his place with one snarl and by putting her
    mouth ( a VERY large mouth!) over his head. Then she went around the
    room and said hi to everyone. Of 50 wolves, these are the only two
    that want to have some kind oif contact with humans. 2/3 of the wolves
    don't want ANY contact. Sila gets bored in her 30 acre pen when she's
    of the road for ahwile. The only time these wolves see a leash is when
    they are on the road, and SIla is worse than a dog when she hears Kent
    coming to her pen with her leash...she drags him to the bus. Guinnes
    has started not wanting to leave the presentations when they are over
    and he did that last nite. Remember, these are totally wild
    wolves...they are not dominated at all by the humans around them...they
    are friends with them, but the wolves do what they want. If 90 lb
    Guiness doesn't want to leave the room ....he doesn't. If he wants yer
    backpack...he get's it. He grabbed a log from the fireplace there and
    destroyed most of it...wolves have twice the jaw pressure as a german
    shepard...finally Guiness had had enough of the colloege kids laughing
    at his antics and he headed for the door with Kent following...

    While channel surfing last nite during the Bruins Beating (tm) at
    the hands of the Panthers (that hockey team from Florida ;-), I stopped
    by PBS channel 2, and it was about wolves.  I didn't see much of it, 
    but what I saw and heard sounds *exactly* like what you described rfb.
    They have a huge area where the wolves basically run free.  Do they do 
    a lot of photography of the wolves ?  

    One of the 2 described a scene in Yellowstone where there was a wolf 
    family they were studying.  The wolf pups were checking out a mule deer
    or somesuch and its fawn, especially the fawn, when a whole herd of Bison
    followed the photographers.  A herd of huge bison behind him, wolves    
    in front of them stalking a deer - sounds similar ? 

    They were gorgeous animals!  I think I even know which one Guinness 
    would be ;-)

    Lot's of T-shirts and sweat-shirts with pictures of the real wolves of
    M:W on them, another neat thing and I bought one last nite but it's too
    small, are bracelets made of braded wolf hair that the wolves have
    shed. 15$ for t's and bracelets, sweatshirts are i think 20$

    there's NOTHING to be afraid of as an adult...these guys would never
    hurt you unless you tryed to take food from them...then they'd chomp ya
    a good one! The little kids that have been hurt by wolves are an
    accident...they wolf treats a little kid like it would a pup...picks
    it up by the head or shoulders, that's how wolves "hug"...but it don't
    work so well on a little kid. and if the wolves sense something weird
    about you or just plain don't like you, they'll have nothing to do
    with you. 
    
    Tiffany, that rat, gets to live down there in Gardner with the wolves
    all this summer.

    that could be the same place, Ken. They've become quite well known over
    the past 3-4 years. I know that this summer they are
    going into a co-oporative effort with Malikite Farms down near
    Gardner. Malikite Frams has taken an old Pioneer fort and turned it
    into an organic gardening/education about such stuff center. M:W
    original place is 15 miles up a dirt sometimes immpassible road with no
    signs...only 75% of the people who set out to find it actually do. The
    ghosttown of Malikite is only 1 mile off the paved road. This way M:W
    will be able to reach many more "subburban" types and thus spread the
    word...plus they are getting concerned abouth the environmental 
    impact done to the original area by the traffic. 
    
    can you imagine butchering 2000 lbs of meat for 3 hours and then
    watching it dissapear in literally minutes down the throats of 135 lb
    animals??? this happens every couple of weeks at M:W.

	There's a place in Ipswich MA that has wolves on rt 133, called Wolf
Hollow. We went there in a year ago. Kind f neat in that the people running the
place give an educational talk on the wolves from inside the enclosed area while
one plays with the wolves. The wolves are raised from pups and treat the people
as one of the pack.

    Oh yeah, there was one other thing about the "wolf folks" for lack
    of a better phrase ;-).   They felt it would be better to actually
    live *with* the wolves, so they built some sort of hut structure
    in the middle of the wolf's domain.  Pretty cool looking setup!

    Rockit Records has Crossroads 2 (quote from the mgr... I've learned not
    to under order these things). I don't recall the price, but I think it
    was around $50. I've noticed in the past that RR often have the
    collections at a lower price than the surrounding stores, at least for
    the first week or two. If you have a WGBH card, check out Strawberries
    too. That discount can make a difference.
    
    It is a VERY good collection btw.
     
    Since I left most of my vinyl in Australia and my R2R died a few years
    ago I've become a big fan of boxed "instant record collections".

  I bought Crossroads II because I was at the Providence show represented on
  Disc 2, and wanted a partial record of the event...  Also for the remixes
  of the "EC Was Here" cuts, since I lost my LP of that.
  
  One of the interesting things about it for me:  I think Disc 4, where he
  ditches the 2nd guitarist and takes over additional duties himself, might
  wind up being my favorite slice.  (Minus the studio cuts they tacked on.)

you are thinking of is glaucoma, Tim.  Of course, something else
in my mind is thinking that maybe glaucoma could lead to cataracts,
but that is a tenuous thread that I'm not sure about...

	yesterday after getting the little rugrat to bed for his
	afternoon nap  I was relaxin and reading Scully's book
	when out of the corner of my eye I see this BIG birdtail
	out the back window. i figured it was one of the big crows
	that wander the neighborhood. I creep up to the window and 
	to my suprise it's a wild turkey! at first I thought it might
	be a phesant but it was bigger and not as colorful and matched
	the picture on my bottle of WT  8-)  it walked through my yard to 
	under my neighbors deck for a while and then back to my yard up
	and through another neighbor's and finally off into the woods behind my 	
	house.  I wonder if it's living back there (woods)  anyways quite a
	sight to see in the big city

    surgery (as they stand on the other side of the laserbeam).  Also that

name to it...

  Small world.  There was a double album out, 2 decades ago, red/silver
  cover I believe, that was on every critic's list of
  good-stuff-between-Elvis-&-Beatles.
  
  Kinda like, after ya check out girl groups, Spector, Beach Boys, and
  instrumentals, here's a teen idol who really could rock.  There were a
  couple of obscure mid-tempo numbers that were not hits but legitimate
  gems, plus the hits.  I think I loaned it to someone who never returned

    During one of the old New Year's Eve shows, commentary was being added
    by Father Guido Sarducci.  At one point they ran an interview between
    the good father and Jerry, in which Jerry talked about many things,
    including "an unusual occurence in the sky" (he was careful not to
    say UFO, had to respect that ;-)  and out of the blue, Father 
    Guido asked Jerry, "What's your favorite Gene Pitney song?"
    Jerry, without missing a beat, answered "Town Without Pity".

  Well, I meant that the Ozzie & Harriet [Nelson] show was before my time...
  As were Ricky's prime hits.
  
  But, you're right, "Garden Party" was a latter day hit for RNelson.  (The
  best things about it IMO are the lines about "Can't please everyone..."
  and "...I'd rather drive a truck".)

    P.S.  A Gene Pitney duet with George Jones was a hit around '61 or so,
          and Pitney continued to write songs for the country scene -- kind
          of the way John Prine, Wendy Waldman, and others did.  Lucrative
          sidelight.  (Actually it was so lucrative for Wadlman that she
          moved to Nashville...)

	ya call it, I believe in the power of collective good thoughts...

	when I picked Guntis up yesterday, in the waiting room they
	had a TV, on which was being shown an operation in progress -
	magnified about 25 times (a big eyeball on the screen) - pretty
	cool, pretty amazing!

	he was awake for the operation - they only knocked him out long
	enough to numb his eye - and what they do is break the old lens
	to pieces and then suck it out and then insert the new lens -
	he said while they were breaking apart the lens, all he could
	see were incredible colors - sorta like tripping...

	he slept most of the rest of the day yesterday - but today he's
	feeling great, tried peeking around the eyepatch, and says that
	he can see with that eye again - cool.

	phew.  I'm glad that's over - I was alot more worried than he was!

the other day.  Grounded her. ;-)

Bruce?)...

    I can remember seeing Mountain several times from 1970 to
    1972. They were always **loud** but put on an excellent
    show. Funny this comes up at this time as the first Leslie
    West album "Mountain" and the "Flowers of Evil" Mountain
    album were re-released on CD a couple of weeks ago. They
    still hold up pretty well over time.
    
    The loudest show I ever saw was Mountain, electric Hot Tuna,
    and Johnny Winter on the same bill in 1970. They were doing
    an outdoor show in Montreal, and I swear you could have heard
    them in the states. Even sitting outdoors my ears hurt!

Debess, what sort of lens was inserted into Guntis's eye after removing
his cloudy old one?  a recycled human one (from a donor), an artificial lens,
or from an animal of some sort?

My little brother was married this past weekend, down in Connecticut,
and just to tweak him a little I asked the DJ to play some Dead.
He (the DJ) thought this was a great idea...I suggested Not Fade Away,
good message, pretty danceable (but what do I know about dancing...I'm
no Barnes).  Unfortunately, it was not in the collection...so we
ended up with Good Loving.  The only downside was that my brother
and I missed it!  We were outside doing more silly photos.

Well, I made it to 35 before having to wear a tuxedo...too bad the plan
to do a tie-dyed cummerbund fell through, that would have been a hit!

ditto!   Black Sabbath's Paranoid is an incredibly good album, even 25
years+ later...  I hadn't heard it in years, then a friend put on the CD,
and I couldn't resist getting it to replace my old crummy vinyl copy.

    Sabbath Song.

Masters of Reality was no shabby record either BUT I agree - Paranoid
is it.  I saw them during that tour (paranoid) and even have a drum stick
I got boinked off the head with (was in Fayettenam, NC).

i must confess, i never got into them at all when i was a youngster...
i always thought they were "too much"...  as in too much noise...
too much distortion...  too much Ozzie...

but now i'm thinking maybe i missed something?  maybe i should go 
back and find out more about this band?  maybe i should check them out 
anew after all these years for these gems i apparently missed?

	Caught Sabbath at New Haven Coliseum in 78 they were good
	but what really stands out(in my limited memory) is the
	backup band .... Van Halen  those boys rocked!  cool strobe
	light drum solo.

    The WAG show was excellent.  I think that they rented the space at 
    the Haywood Gallery for this show, so I'm not sure where the new WAG
    is.  
    
    The show was dubbed "The Pelvic Carnival", it's an annual event.
    As you walked in, you were given a wand to carry around with you.
    There was a lot of really cool artwork on display, as well as lots of
    yummy food.  Joey Mars (a WAG artist who organized the event) had
    many of his T-shirts and stickers on display.  I recognized his
    artwork immediately as some of the Grateful Dead shirts I've seen
    at shows.
      
    There was a large dimly lit room where the stage and chairs were set
    about.  Although 10 acts performed, only 3 of those were musical acts. 
    One guy performed spoken word in the nude, another guy had a silent act 
    which ended in him shooting a stuffed mannequin 3 times with a rifle (that 
    was very loud). 
    
    The first band to play was interesting.  I must go into a little detail.
    One guy sat in a chair playing a keyboard with his feet, and a toy 
    synthesized guitar and many bells and trinkets into a microphone.  A woman 
    was standing at a microphone with headphones one and an egg shaker in hand,
    intermittently singing/mumbling parts of a song into the mike (a song 
    which obviously wasn't the one they were performing).  There was also a 
    man playing a weird homemade? violinish instrument, a guy with a cymbal of 
    some sort, and a hippiesh guy sitting on the floor playing the bongos.  
    To top it all off, another guy was wandering around with different objects,
    sometimes ski poles or an egg beater, rotating the objects as he walked,
    poking the various band members while they were playing, eventually
    pissing them off.  They did reach a peak, however, at a time when the
    cymbal guy was playing the cymbal with an electric drill, producing
    a really cool sound and splashes of sparks, and the rest of the band
    was all tuned in and synchronized.
    
    The next band to play was Elbow, they went on around 11:00.  This
    had to be the best Elbow show I've ever seen.  They were excellent!
    People were smiling and dancing, and the vibe was so right.   
    They were just so excellent!  8^)
    
    Right after Elbow's set, Joey came onto the stage and told everyone
    to turn their chairs around for the pyramid.  In the back of the 
    room was this piece of artwork shaped into a pyramid, made of steel/metals 
    with two television sets in the middle set on U (so they were going,
    "Sssssssssss").  Four guys came out and played the steel on the pyramid 
    and homemade space-age guitars, while a "gimp", dressed in white with 
    a gas mask over his face, crawled all over the floor.  I call him
    a gimp because he reminds me of the slave in pulp fiction, slthough 
    he was wearing clothes and not touching anybody.  "Gimp" pulled the
    tv's out of the pyramid and rolled out a white material on the floor
    (all with psychedelic-y music in the background).  He then slowly
    peeled a layer off the white sheet, going all the way back, looking
    like he was peeling a fruit roll-up.  He then stood up and fell face
    first into the sheet, sticking to it and rolling his whole body into
    it.  The other side of the sheet was a silver foil, and he squirmed
    all over the floor like a worm.  One of the musicians came over 
    with a weird object that made a zapping sound and was 'controlling'
    foil boy with the zapper.  Unfortunatelly, the show abruptly stopped
    when the zapper-man started hanging on a chain which broke loose from
    the ceiling and hit his head, cutting it open.  Although we didn't
    get to see the full performance, the beginning that we did see was
    very entertaining and interesting!  It was really funny watching
    foil-boy (attempt to) get up and walk/scoot out of the room.
    
    In all, it was a really fun and strange night.  I would definitely go
    to one of these shows again!  After loading out and driving back to 
    Boston, we got home around 4:00 am.

I did see Deano's tongue hangin' out :)))   And what a show !!!  AJ Rocked the
Paradise...even when they finished the show with a REAL Unplugged toon...4 of
'em, on the front of the PAradise stage, no microphones, no amps, just acoustic
guitar, and vocals, in front of 600? or so folks gathered around the front of
the stage, for a nice quiet "Kiss Of Misfortune"  they pulled it off quite
nicely...in attendance that night was Ahmet Ertugun (sp?) The Man at Atlantic
Records, and word has it that he told AJ that he was impressed, and it's very
possible that AJ will be signed to Atlantic Records...hope so

I'm telling ya, catch Acoustic Junction, they put on a high energy show, great
music, great harmonies...

    and the atmosphere back there was RAGE'n!!!  
    
    The keyboardist (clearly mega talented) would alternate between 
    violin, flute and keys on playing the leads....EXCELLENT, HOT, 
    RIPPIN!!!  The crowd was very into it.

My pleasure Deano...hope to see you on the 22nd at the OVK !!!  Reid (AJ Lead
singer) and Stewart's folks band "The CenterStreeters" will be opening for AJ
athe OVK...they are a bluegrass band, and can really play...Tim Roper, the AJ
keyboardist/flautist/fiddler/harpist sometimes sits in with the CenterStreeters,
and they have their own multi-instrumentalist "Doc" who plays guitar, dobro,
banjo...

  "Rocker Jack Logan keeps his day job," by Steve Morse:

Jack Logan... repairs swimming-pool pumps in a small town in Georgia.  He's
also been a bellhop at Howard Johnson's, an employee of Kmart and a worker
in a cup factory.

These jobs have kept Logan grounded, but these days... he's become a
critic's favorite, whose tight-knit Stones-influenced garage-rock -- also
showing traces of early REM -- is winning lavish praise.

"It's a total shock," says Logan, who will headline Mama Kin on Tuesday with
his band Liquor Cabinet (featuring a couple of fellow swimming-pool pump
repairmen).

"We used to put out tapes around Athens [Ga.] and nobody was breaking down
the door to get those...  I think we sold about 80 of them in three years.
So all this attention is new.  But as long as I got this opportunity, I'm
curious to see how long we can get away with it."

Logan, 36, caused critics to take notice two years ago with his album
"Bulk", recorded at home in loosey-goosey, nocturnal sessions.  And he's
just returned with "Mood Elevator" on the Medium Cool/Restless Records
label.  It's another slice of compact guitar-rock with fascinating tales of
unpretentious, small-town living... often told with narrative flair...

"We kind of know what we're doing in a strange kind of way," says Logan.
"But we don't practice much.  Music is more of a hobby for us. I'm sure some
people question our seriousness, but we don't consider this a 'career.' It's
a sidelight to our other jobs."

Which is precisely why it's so refreshing to hear Logan's music.  It's not
formula-driven, or tailored for niche-conscious radio formats.  "We've had
some college airplay...  but I guess the album isn't alternative enough for
the new alternative stations.  Or maybe it is.  I don't know.  Maybe I'm
being stereotypical about it.  But we don't worry about it."

Logan is managed by Peter Jesperson, who also managed the Replacements.
Logan's fans include Peter Buck of REM and a group called the Dashboard
Saviors, who recommended Logan to the Medium Cool label, though the Saviors
just broke up.

Asked if he's ever been a professional musician before, Logan says with a
chuckle, "No, no, no!  And I'm still not.  That's something we shoot for,
but we're not there yet."

    to use email?  Is there a charge per cal or something?  like my
    daughter has an account on the machine at the branch office of the
    company she works for.  many of the employees have accounts.  if she is
    using email to communicate out to other people in other parts of the 
    world, how does that get reflected on comm charges etc ?  one wonders.

Well, it happened sooner than I expected.  It wasn't the appeal to reason,
it wasn't the reason that she would never be in any danger while wearing
a life-jacket and Dad being a former lifeguard, it wasn't the book
"Three Days on a River in a Red Canoe that turned the tide.  No, it was
greed, plain and simple!  Mom promised to give her Song Bird Barbie, if
Hannah went canoeing with us and didn't cry or scream.  But Amy did this
bribing when I wasn't around, so it came as a bit of a surprise to me
when, on Saturday, Hannah said, "Are we going canoeing tomorrow?  I want
to go canoeing."  Huh???  But then all was explained!  
So, Sunday, after Hebrew school, we had some lunch, popped the 
canoe on the car, and took off for a different site (Qauddick Resevoir?) in
Thompson, CT which is pretty close to our house.  And she had a good time,
with us out on the water for about an hour.  We stayed pretty close to
shore most of the time, but we got rocked by boat wakes a few times
and even those were interpreted as 'fun'.  Hannah said she was fine,
and she "didn't listen to her brain"  which I guess meant that she 
thought it was kind of scary, but not enough to induce hysteria.

Everybody had a good time.  But I think Dan was getting a bit overwrought
at times because no one had promised him a toy ;-)  Now to see if we
can get her to do it again without a bribe.  Otherwise this could get
pretty expensive!

    An individual piece of email is probably less than a penny, depending
    on length.  There is no charge for an email per se, (unless you belong
    to a service that charges for email, and now with ISP's all over the
    place, even the major vendors are changing their stripes.)  The real
    costs are reflected in how much a company pays for their access,
    which would include communication connections (via dialup, or some
    dedicated access via a T1 line or the like) a corporate account which
    may reside on an ISP's system.  If they have their own domain name
    and their own hookup to the net, then they have to pay for a 
    distinct address which maybe a one time or a monthly fee.  Pushing the 
    bits over the wire is the easy part.  It's the set up and maintenance
    that cost you.

    I've done some work on this at school in my intro to I.S. class.  
    2 years ago we had a pricing grid sent to us via email.  It brokedown
    various ways to ship material/documentation.  The email vehicle was so
    diminutive that they claimed the cost of sending email messages was
    "adsorbed in system overhead costs" and was "strongly recommended".
    Faxing averaged to be about $.30 a sheet.  Fed-ex had the best shipping 
    deals over all other carriers CPP (cost per pound).  
    
    Bottomline, email is the most cost effective means of communication 
    available today.  Especially in the long distance area.   However, one 
    aspect of the cost of email is greatly heightened through selfish email-
    box management.  The cost of storing old email messages is high...just 
    like when our whole voicemail system crashes cause people have too much
    stored voicemail messages.  HUGE impact.

Song Bird Barbie is your basic Barbie, perhaps with a non-regulation
hand.  It comes complete with a balancing bird.  The birds beak sits
in Barbies hand (hence the comment about the non-regulation hand)
and the bird (with heavy wings that droop down and out to balance
the thing) balances in Barbies hand.  If you press the beak,
the bird breaks into song.  Song Bird Barbie!

We'd already bought it some time ago, and were just looking for a 
good opportunity to introduce it.  Birthday, or Christmas, or 
Hannukah.  I guess canoe behavior was satisfactory too.

i get a call from these guys last night saying they'll give

    Feeling low last nite on the way home from work, grabed a beer and took
    the back way home. I intentionally do not look to the left at a certain
    point as the landrapers have bulldozed about 100 acres (or so it seems) 
    of pristine praire/foothill environment into a hill of dust. Where's the
    MonkeyWrench Gang when you need them? To make it worse, in the middle
    of the road, dead maybe for an hour at the most, was a 6 foot long bull
    snake. Probably not too many rats left after the bulldozing or the
    dozers rousted him out of his hole one. I turned the corner and started
    to drop off of the Mesa and just happened to look over. There's three
    bucks in velvet, horns just starting to grow out of the top of their
    heads. Two small guys, a spike and a forky, and the bug buck. By the
    looks of the bumps starting to poke out of the main beam, I'd say he
    was gonna be a 4-5  point come fall. I turned around and parked on the
    side of the road with the engine still running. The smell of exhaust
    fumes hides all scent of man from deer. These guys walked up to within
    10-15 yards of the car, the big guy trying to look into the cab and
    figger out "whats up". I could see his nostrils quivering, and his eye
    balls searching to see what he couldn't smell. I laughed out loud. 
    I noticed one of the little guys limping a litte and thought he might
    have got hit by a car, but then I figgered out what was wrong.
    Occasionaly, each buck would turn and stick an antler under their haunch
    and scratch the antler against their leg. The antlers are too sensitive
    for the deer to use their hooves to scrtach them, being full of blood
    and growing tissue. So they use their hind quarter to do the
    scratching...the little guy that was limping, i guessed, stabbed
    himslef in the groin whilst scratching and felt it! I laughed out loud
    again, having figgered that out. The little guy gave me a dirty look. 
    
    I watched them for about 30 minutes, finished my beer, and drove home,
    hoping that these guys would have a little piece of land left to them
    for at least a few more years...before the bulldozers come again.

	if it wasn't for the funny parts, your story would make me cry. i
	go past the WalMart in Lunenburg everyday and look the other way.
	It's on a hill that used to be a dairy farm. The hill stood empty
	for many years and looked beautiful just the way it was. Then the
	bulldozers came and tranformed it into a shopping plaza. What
	used to be a nice rolling hill is now a flat-top man_made hill of
	concrete and blacktop. I won't argue the good/bad for the economy
	or whether we needed/didn't need this shopping mall, it just
	saddens me that the hill is gone.  :-(
	
	also heard there are black bears roaming Luneneburg. Presumably
	cause there's little food due to the harse winter and diminishing
	habitat.  sigh. progress.

    answer to everything, including the open space issue...dumb, stupid ,
    M%^%*^$&*ERS. and it doesn't help my karma (although it's grate stress
    relief) to yell at cops as they are setting on the side of the road

    On the brighter side, I think, they've resorted to putting up Bear Crossing
    signs in NE Mass on Rt 2.  The black bear is making a big comeback, and they
    just love the campgrounds around that area (that's the iffy part).  At least
    they're coming back!

    return are then shot...lots of orphan cubs are sent to the animal

ummmm, not to be contrary to developing sentiment here or anything,
but aren't we being a bit severe here in our attitudes towards this
person and make-a-wish???

rather than looking at this as "i'm dying so i'm going to go kill something",
maybe it's more appropriate to find out a little more about the kid and
his/her motives...  if this person always enjoyed outdoorsy kinds of things
like hunting and fishing and stuff, i don't see it as that much of a stretch
for a kid to want to go hunting big bear in alaska as a dying wish...
to a certain extent i can relate, even though i'm not a hunter or fisherman
myself...  and certainly i wouldn't condemn the make a wish foundation
for trying to help them...

kid wants to go hunting before he/she dies...  why is that a problem????
the animal is not endangered and can be legally hunted... it doesn't seem

    and Mindy works weekends.  So, no serious fishing.  We did kill (No,
    not literally ;-) the kivvers (panfish/sunfish) last weekend.  The kids
    loved it!

    I got new line on all the reels except the striper reel, that's next,
    the boat is ready and has seen some action, so I'm ready to go.  All 
    I need now is TIME...

    From the little that I;ve heard about this youngman is that he has
    fished and hunted for most of his short life. I don't think anyone
    should judge him on whats being said in the media, from what i have
    seen no one has taken the time to interview the young man and ask him
    anything about his last wish!
    
     As a fisherman and a hunter I agreed with fishing and hunting only for
    food, but rememeber that some people like the taste of bear and as a
    added goal you can have a nice skin.

if we can respect the animals, we can afford a little more

as for make-a-wish...  i've heard criticisms of them before...
they were based on how much money they raise as compared
to how much is spent on salaries and such as opposed to the
actual charitable work....  and while there's certainly room
for imporvement, i support what they are trying to do, more so
now that i've seen the kind of difference it can make to a kid...
i'd be curous to know what other, if any, criticisms of the organization
there are...

    One of my best friend's 4 year old daughter contracted Leukemia a 
    couple of years ago. Last summer, the MAWF sent the family to Disneyworld, 
    all expenses paid.  After constant hospital visits, dangerous spinal taps,
    radiation, chemotherapy, she and the family really needed a break.  
    MAWF made a big difference here!  She's doing great BTW...

    I saw a piece on the tube last week about about an ex-logger... 
    said that he and a lot of other who logged had those jobs because
    they loved the woods and loved being in that environment, and that
    he realized that the way that they were doing their jobs was destroying
    what they loved.  So he's on a mission to try to change the ways
    that logging is done...
    
    There is no longer any reason to kill a bear, except in self-defense 
    in your back yard (and it's really the bear's back yard, too...  the
    bear didn't even get $24 worth of beads).
    
    To go out into the wilderness because you love the wilderness and then
    kill the very thing you claim to love is hypocrisy.  I don't care
    whether the bear is officially "endangered."  As rfb suggested, it's
    all endangered, and becoming more so with every new development and
    parking lot.  So maybe killing a bear *is* equivalent to going to
    Disneybland.
    
    The kid (as is any trophy-hunter) is on an ego-trip.  
    
    And, fwiw, all of us are one step away from death.  It's just that most

my house in Milford although I've seen no bear sign.

My take on this is to chalk this up to you live your lifestyle and
I'll live mine.  I still fish plenty and used to hunt (deer and birds).
I haven't hunted in so long BUT yet I look around and see other things
that other people do that could potentially bother me and don't try to 
make it an issue for me to stop them....

    let's just kill 'em till they're *almost* extinct!

    and discussions also help you (me) see the "other" side when often we
    have a prejudice against that side. Extremism, although i like it! and
    it helps to bring an issue to peoples attention, usually doesn't solve
    anything. a good example is the guy who lobbied long and hard for the
    re-introduction of the wolves into Yellowstone. Years ago he and his
    allies would never have considered help from "foes"... a "don't trust
    'em" attitude. The major political helper in this effort turned out to
    be the environmentalists worst nitemare, the Gov. of Montana (or was it
    IDAho??) anyway the point being that the "allies" abondoned the main
    wolf guy because he was consorting with the enemy, saying "they'll
    screw you, just wait"...now they are eating crow because the efforts
    were successful and the "enemy" turned out to be an ally in this case.

	I used to go hunting for deer in VT with my dad and brothers
	until I got too afraid of being shot! i remember walking for 2hrs
	to get Waaay out in the woods(or so I thought) sat down and
	noticed another hunter 100 yds or so away 8-(  Never did get a deer
	so I don't really know if I *could've* shot one. Venison is very
	tatsy however. I also think you should hunt for eating not for trophy.
	Eat everything you hunt/kill and it makes it OK in my book. I also
	don't have a problem with this kid who will have such a short time
	left on the planet 8-( 

	BTW my uncle(ex Maine forest ranger) once told me he'd never eat
	bear-meat! He once skinned a Bar(as Davey Crockett would say) and
	said there were so many worms mixed in the meat it almost made him
	yak!

a twist to this hunting thread...how d'y'all feel about hunting for the meat
and keeping the trophy?  my sister lives in Florida, she's married to a Real
Good 'Ol Boy from the South. He was brought up hunting, fishing...if he bags a
deer, he eats the meat...but he also has a "trophy"...Karen was kinda freaked
out when we stayed down there last year and this deer was hanging over the bed
in the guest room.

bro-is-law says "aw shucks, Buck won't hurtcha"  :)))   I"m not a fan of hunting
for trophies, but the venison was damn tasty.

my .02 on the dying kid, I say let the kid do his thang, even though he is
killing a Kodiak bear, and I'm not into that, I think a little slack in this
case may be appropriate...and how much of the Truth are we getting from the
media on this whole story anyway?

you can write about how it is bad and all all you want in here
and it ain't gonna do no good. write your newspaper.

Voters approve things like huge developments, etc.
there is a zoning board that typically has to approve developments,
building etc.  the best way *you* can make a difference is
by getting elected to the zoning bd, showing up for meetings to
speak your mind, getting other concerned citizens to show up at
meetings, etc.  it is a ton of work, but, if you really,really,really
want to see it stop, you can by acting, gettting people to vote, etc.
you can bet your paycheck that when Joe Builder wants to build 100 houses
on a mint piece of land that he's gonna have all of his friends down
for the zoning meeting where his/her fate lies.

i'm getting a whole new experience now that i pay taxes (3200/yr!)
and go to town mtgs.  i tell ya, the turnout is so small... you're
damn lucky if even 8% of the reg. voters in town show up at the town mtg.
very sad.  it is more like 2-4% who determine the fate of an $11.5 M
budget, various changes to town bylaws (like zoning laws), etc.
you wanna push your agenda, you gotta work,work,work and get out
the vote.

    
    JC is correct.. I started going to town meetings in Woodland Park and
    the number thats shows up is so small its a shame...
    
    Its hard enough to get people to vote let alone show up for town
    meetings.
    Woodland Park just had a vote on a Rec. center out of 9,000 voters only
    1500 voted, and they made it easy the town mailed the ballot to your
    house with a enclosed return with stamp and thats all they got to vote.
    
    BTW the rec center went down in flames!!!!

    Developers don't tear up the land because they're evil, they do it to
    accomodate an ever-growing population and changing trends in where
    people want to live.  Most people are hypocritical about development --
    they've built their house but will fight tooth and nail to prevent
    anyone else from building their own.
    
    It's the same story with exploitation of Alaskan wilderness for oil
    drilling.  It's done because we demand cheap private transportation
    over public.  Until we're willing to make serious lifestyle changes,
    such as carpooling, using public transit, living closer to work,
    bicycling, etc., we deserve what we get.
    
    Speaking of oil, the election year gambits of rolling back the gas tax
    and selling some of our strategic oil reserves (at a tremendous loss)
    are terrible ideas.  Gas right now is at a price equivilant to what it
    was in 1950 (adjusting for inflation).
    
    Being an election year, the Republicans are again touting a $500/child
    tax credit.  Clinton will wholeheartedly support this, then it will die
    a well-deserved death in committee.  Next up will be the first time
    home buyers' tax credit which will suffer the same fate.
    
    I think I've rambled enough for one morning.  :-)

    I disagree...they, developers,not construction guys, are evil incarnate, 
    out here they are usually from another sate they've already fucked up..
    when they get done here, they move on to Montana or Wyoming or....
    I've met them, discussed issues with them and ended up calling them
    names (even had one call up an old boss and demand i be fired for
    telling a developer what I thought of him in the parking lot of the
    building we rented from him at the time)...
    I shudder to think that as a kid i even worked for them in AZ,
    before i became aware of their  "concept" of what growth should be.
    There's sanity that could be applied to all development, but the all
    mighty $ dictates crowding in 4 houses where there should be 2 and a
    natural access way left for animals as well as people. But as long a s

    Local zoning boards set these restrictions and this is one area where a
    single individual can have a tremendous impact, by voting or attending
    planning and zoning board committee meetings.  I'm pretty cynical about
    government, but most of the people I've known who've served want to do
    what's best for their city and town, which may be opposite what you
    feel is best but they'll never know it if you don't speak up.
    
    It's easy for me to say since rich yuppie Californians aren't exactly
    flocking to Mass.  :-)

    from out of state. They are for rapid, uncontrolled growth. I've seen
    (on TV) people told to shutup by our Mayor because they had a different

    Woodland Park up the hill from Colorado Springs is the same as down
    here in the flat lands.
    The mayor also sells insurance up there so the more growth the more
    sales for him, the city manager has/is pushing hard for the rec. center
    up there so he can put it on his resume(so I heard), that way way when
    he bails out of here he looks good.

Developers do it because they can make money doing it.
Accomodating the population is simply the demand.

As Jamie said and as i said before, VOTE and ATTEND meetings!
tonight, we have a local election in Groton and both deb and I will
vote.  My guess will be a pitiful 8-12% turnout... i'll hit the polls at 7:50 pm
or so and check the count on my way out. (8pm the polls close).
also, if you have a local newspaper, WRITE LETTERS.  i write letters
and they get published in our town paper.  a lot more people than
you think read the editorials... i got some feedback from one of my
mother's friends who lives in groton regarding a letter i wrote to the groton
paper... people read.  write a convincing story, start pounding pavment,
and you can change things.  yeah, it is a *TON* of work... 

    Many of you will remember a note I put in last summer about my friend
    Pat that left this world for another one. He supported himself and his
    daughter by making some of the best bent willow furniture found in
    Colorado; tables, chairs, loveseats, plantstands and endtables.  We are 
    proud to own several of these pieces and deeply saddened that we'll 
    aquire no more. Last week I took all these pieces out into the yard and
    hosed all the winter dust off of them. It was late at nite on one of
    those nites where the  temps were still in the 50's. Naturaly my
    thoughts turned to Pat, and I said a few words to him. All of a sudden
    I get this long, slow rush....that's the best I can describe it. It
    slowly rose in intensity, peaked, and lasted about 10 minutes. I could
    "feel" Pat there. It wasn't scary or anything, in fact "IT" felt good.
    I finished washing down the furniture and upended it so it would dry, all
    the time still feeling this incredable sensation throughout my body.
    Still smiling, I stood around outside until slowly the "rush" subsided,
    said "see ya my friend" and went inside.

    into Hellpalooza (or whatever they called it), one was for mumble High Tars,

Strange sight this morning.  I was almost all the way to work, heading 
into the last leg.  I was getting off rte 4, going through the Drum Hill
rotary to head up 3 north, when all of a sudden, a deer scoots out of the
bushes on one side, runs across the road in front of me (I'm thinking,
where the hell is it going to go!) and jumps the guard rail into the 
bush!  I'd just about stopped dead in my tracks at that point, but kept 
on going.  I'm wondering if the damn thing got hit afterward.  The
smart thing to do would be for it to have gone to ground at that point,
but I don't necessarily expect smart behavior from deers.  While it did bound
into the woods, those woods are pretty much a small island that dips down to Rte 3,
and is surrounded by roads with lots of fast moving cars.  Hope it made it
out alright, but I'm not betting on it.

    Reg Ed, Tiffany Barnes G.P.A.: 4.31 Plans: Colo State Univ @ Fort Collins

    When somebody said "congratulations" to Tiffany Barnes in the hallway a
    few weeks ago, she had to ask why. She hadn't planned for, thought
    about, or expected to be valedictorian, but her enourmous effort and
    constant hard work in the past four years had nonetheless won her the
    top spot. 
    Tiffany, with her nose ring and sometimes black, sometimes auburn hair,
    is obviously not the sterotypical study-all-the-time-no-social-life
    nerd. She *is* constantly busy, however, as art editor for NUMEN,
    member of the National Honor Society, and the founder and president of
    the Environmental Club. She recently quit waitressing at a local
    restaurant - a job she has held since 9th grade. With an average of
    four hours of sleep a nite, being tired is a fact of life for Tiffany. 
    But she doesn't mind, saying: "We waste so much time sleeping-life's so
    short as it is". 
    In the little free time she does have, she camps, hikes and tries to
    "just get away from the city". She also voluteers much of her time to
    Mission:Wolf a sanctuary for wolves two and a half hours south of the 
    Springs. She spent three weeks last summer building fences, digging
    holes, and giving tours, coming home only on weekends. This summer she
    plans on spending two months at the refugee. 
    She would do homework for an average of six hours per day, not because
    she wanted to pad her resume or boost her GPA. She simply likes to 
    learn. "I figure if you're going to do something, you should do your best
    and get the most out of it," says Barnes. "I know i can get an "A" in
    my classes, so I'd better live up to it."
    However, she doesn't agree with much of what she has to do to get that
    "A." "I'm feeling bitter towards school right now. I realize that
    learning is the most important thing and knowledge is the only way. But
    I'm tired of wasting time on worksheets when we could be learning about
    ourselves."
    She does the worksheets anyway, usually in her room, which is constantly
    a wreck. (I don't have time to clean it!") She listens to the Dave
    Matthews Band, Citizen Fish, and Vivaldi, but she hates the Grateful
    Dead "because my parents love them." (   %^)    )
    Tiffany says shes feeling overwhelmed now as she gets ready to take
    finals and three Advanced Placement Exams in Biology, European History
    and English. "But the tests to me are like a game now," says Barnes.
    "I've just got to go in there and play."
    And looking at her track record, it looks like Tiffany will reign
    victorious.

    A wise person once went into the wilderness to find her own soul. And
    found that the soul she contained wasn't hers, but a piece of a
    great soul. We are one. Regardless of income, sex, skin color. We all 
    contain a piece of the great soul deep within. The world continues to
    turn, a cycle in constant motion, and humanity continues to burn.
    Humans are evolving into different classes due to past generations
    obsessions with appearance and money. The only way our generation can
    survice in today's reality is to halt the evolution of humanity and 
    unite. 
    Imagine a day when approaching the person next to you is not permitted. 
    As the majority of humanity is separated from each other due to their
    education, social status, and yearly income: as the rich kids marry
    rich and the poor kids marry poor, we as a species drift further from
    the unity we desparately need. This unity is what connects us, what
    makes us strong. If the Jews and the Christians could have united would
    Hitler have been able to destroy so many? If the Native Americnas had
    been able to set aside tribal differences for only one day, would so
    many now be living on reservations? Authority thrives on humanities
    inablity to unite. But if we can set aside our differenaces and unite,
    authority might become powerless in the hands of humanity. And our
    world might gain a little sanity. Times are changing, when the building
    in Oklahoma City was bombed, people of all age, race and sex bonded
    together to help each other. We must remember this example, unity *IS*
    possible. We must put aside selfish desires and truly become one. It is
    our only hope. 
    As we set here our minds wander far from the rattle of speakers.
    Thoughts drift to college, jobs, the parties this evening. And the
    details of the formal education we have recieved in the past four years
    will be meaningless in the rest of our travels. But within this school
    we were exposed to all walks of life. And if you can remember 
    anything about this day remember we are setting here together. And as
    we venture into the next realm, and as the past generations standards
    relating to money, race, and sex attempt to take away your piece of the 
    great soul, remember, we must unite, Because unity is the strength
    needed to achive a world full of hope.
