We've recently acquired AS4100s based DUnix TruClusters with only
character cell console terminals (no graphics heads). Found that we
had to run SWXCRMGR from floppy and had a heck of time with the utility
because it was slow, but worse, the output from the SWXCRMGR utility
was barely readable! Many bogus or 'substitute' characters are printed
in the process. Also, appears there are many substitute commands
required when using a character cell terminal (i.e. Cntrl B = F2, etc).

I want to believe that some of what we saw was because of incompatible
    terminal settings.

Does anyone know where this stuff is well documented?

    thanx

Yep, character cell versions are slow and buggy. Unfortuantly, Digital
doesn't own the software and can't seem to influence the owners to get
    it fixed.

The only tip I can give you is to be sure you set your terminal to
enable 8-bit controls. That at least seems to get the Fn key to work
properly. This applies to the ECU in CC mode. I actually never ran
the SWXCR in CC mode, but I image in runs just as poorly.

Also set XOFF to a high value (128 or higher) on the terminal.
I have seen console hangs/swxcrmgr problems because of a low setting.

Forgot to mention:
Use SRLMGR with character cell terminals!
