2599.0. "SWXCR monitoring/failover concerns" by SANITY::LEMONS (And we thank you for your support.) Thu May 15 1997 12:51

    Hi

We have some SWXCR concerns that are causing some of us to consider
abandoning use of SWXCR. I'm hopeful that, by mentioning these here,
we might learn of existing features we're not exploiting, or new
features that are going to be added to the product.

Concern #1: we use RAID-5 with a hot spare disk. We write the
configuration out to a floppy. If a RAID-5 disk dies, the hot spare
disk is automatically added to the RAID-5 set [that's good]. But the
configuration on the floppy is not updated [that's bad]. So, if the
controller has a hardware failure, we now don't have a backup of the
    new configuration.

Needed: SWXCR controller support for automatically writing a new
configuration to a floppy when an automatic change occurs.

Concern #2: the current SWXCR monitoring invovles an operating
system-specific GUI [that's good] which must be looked at by a human to
    spot errors [that's bad].

Needed: a way for the SWXCR monitoring software to send alerts via SNMP
or some other way, so that centralized event monitoring can be used.

Please let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks!

2599.1SNMP for RAID monitoringRDGENG::ROBINSONLet me manage your Video Player for youWed May 21 1997 06:1622
re .0

I have a solution for your second concern. For our Mediaplex Video
server products, I developed an SNMP agent for monitoring RAID systems.
This is based on SWXCR monitoring code but does not use its GUI. It
supports monitoring of the raids on a system and also generates TRAPs
when there is a change in the status of the RAID system.

For a couple of Mediaplex installations, we have integrated the RAID
MIB with NetView and used this to trigger alarms on the console when
as disk goes bad etc. With the MIB it is also fun to watch how long it
takes to rebuild a RAID subset. It periodically reports the % rebuild.

I guess it would be possible to give this to other groups, we are not
going to be able to support it. Ideally, such support should come from
the StorageWORKS group. Our raid monitor was only an interim as StorageWORKS
were planning to produce a standard version. I do not think this ever
happened.

I'm hoping that the StorageWorks Command Console will, in a future
    version, support the SWXCR.
