2593.0. "4/275 to 5/375 upgrade" by HLFS00::VERKERK_R (Robert Verkerk) Mon May 12 1997 09:40

dear colleges,

A customer performed an upgrade from an A2100 4/275 --> 5/375 (3 cpu's in 1 box)

Digital unix 3.2c...

He used the 3.9 firmware CD.. he installed the patch which is in ek-kn470-in.c01
because he wanted to stay at 3.2C.

during boot he says unknown or invalid cpu type.

Has the customer used a wrong patch for the 3.9 CD. Or must he have made a type
error or otherwise??

They went back to the 4/275 cpu's...

greetings,

Robert Verkerk...

    When you say that "he went back to the 4/275 CPU's...", I am assuming
    that you were able to put the 4/275's back in and the 2100 worked ok?
    Seems odd, are you changing the firmware back and forth? The EV4 and
    EV5 CPU's need different firmware to be loaded onto the box to work
    properly.

    From your note, it sounded like a UNIX boot problem, which would seem
    to indicate that you did not have a problem with the box powering up
    and doing its POST, which I would have thought you would have if the
    box had the wrong firmware on it.

    What am I missing?

    Hello,

    Yes the customer changed the srm and arc using the 3.9 CD going back
    and forth between EV4 and EV5. he also ran every time the ECU..
    But than during the boot of Digital Unix the machine gives the error
    concerning the unknown/illigal CPU type.
    But the patch which is listed in the installation guide should have
    prevented it of finding it an illegal CPU type..
    Or has the customer to boot than Digital Unix in a special way???

    Does the system successfully boot from the patched version of 3.2x when
    the EV4 CPU's are installed?

    Note too that I believe you will need a v3.2f of UNIX to boot the 375
    CPU.

Just for clarification:

The patch mentioned is NOT a dUNIX patch, it's a console patch, so if you are
asking your friendly UNIX support colleagues (like a colleague did), they do
not know about such a patch...
