2527.0. "ETHERNET NAMING CONVENTION ON UNIX" by WARFUT::MELLING () Thu Feb 20 1997 04:32

    Hello,

I have a customer who has 20+ AS2100 servers and configures them
    	with 3 DE425 and 1 DE435 modules to make a total of 5 ethernet
links including the Standard I/O port.
UNIX V3.2C configures these as :

    	TU0 - STD I/O
    	TU1 - DE425
    	TU2 - DE425
    	TU3 - DE425
    	TU4 - DE435

This customer took delivery of several AS2100-A servers recently
with this time 3 DE425 and 2 DE435 modules for the 5 ethernet
    	links.
The system sizes these as :

    	TU0 - DE425
    	TU1 - DE425
    	TU2 - DE425
    	TU3 - DE435
    	TU4 - DE435

The customer would like the three DE425	options to be the TU1,2,3
    	units respectively.

Is the above due to the way sizing is done and can it be altered
    	to the customer's desired config.

The customer wants this:

    	TU0 - DE435
    	TU1 - DE425
    	TU2 - DE425
    	TU3 - DE425
    	TU4 - DE435

Is that right?

I'm very tempted to ask why, but I probably wouldn't appreciate the customer's
reasons... :-)

No, it is not possible to do what the customer wants. I am curious why the
customer uses 3 DE425s and 2 DE435s. Why not 4 DE425s and 1 DE435, which would
match what they got on the 2100?

I just realized that my reply in .1 is wrong, since I got the PCI card and the
EISA card mixed up.

The DE425 is the EISA card.
The DE435 is the PCI card.

The customer has three EISA cards and two PCI cards. I think he can get what he
wants by putting one PCI card in one of the lower four PCI slots (i.e., bus 0),
and the other PCI card in one of the upper four PCI slots (i.e., bus 2). The
EISA cards will be on bus 1. This puts the three EISA cards in the middle of
the two PCI cards.

Give it a try.

(But, WHY?)
