838.0. "files-11 on WORM devices?" by MLNCSC::DALPORTO (Humanity detests death sentence!) Thu May 29 1997 12:52

    Hello,

    I should need an explanation.

The SPD of OSMS 3.4 states that "OpenVMS Alpha does not support any
configuration using WORM media containing the WORMS-11 on-disk
    structure."
Does it mean that it is possible to have FILES-11 on-disk structure on
    WORM media?
    If yes, how?
If not, does it mean that WORM media are not supported at all on
    OpenVMS alpha?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Yes, The easiest way is to use backup/physical from the same size
    rewritable media.

WORM media is supported on OpenVMS/Alpha but currently no file systems
are supported that allow incremental (file by file) population. Think
of the backup/physical as a manual process of dumping a large cache to
    the WORM disk.

The disadvantage is the manual nature of the disk population but the
advantages (as compared to WORMS-11) are:
    o Files-11 features, such as ACL's, that WORMS-11 doesn't have
    o ability to mount/cluster
o faster mount times and less system resources used
o the ability to cleanup and maximize the data set before it is saved
      to WORM media.

This same "feature" exists for the VAX products as well.
