831.0. "RWZ53 and WindowsNT Support?" by CSC32::S_WASKEWICZ () Wed Apr 30 1997 18:20

        Since Microsoft has "blessed" the RWZ53 on WindowsNT V4.0, i.e.
    placed it into their HCL (Hardware Compatability List), as supported,
    does anyone in any DIGITAL engineering (or anyone else for that matter)
    know the details for use of an RWZ53 under NT 4.0?
        We have a customer call asking why he's getting error messages
    when trying to format a cartridge, ( its a Phillips made media, 1024
    b/sector, and 2.6 Gb).
        I've ascertained the drive is, indeed a DIGITAL stickered RWZ53,
    although he says the vendor model # is a C1114H. I thought ours was a
    C1113?

    Questions:
        What bytes per sector media are supposed to be used on RWZ53/NT.
        Is the HP vendor model C1114 or C1113 for DIGITAL's RWZ53?
    Also:
    I'd really like to know how the DIGITAL RWZ53 was qualified under NT for
    Microsoft?i.e. did we do it internally, or did they do it out in Redmond?
    Lets chat,

831.1Partition...WHATSA::MATTAThu May 01 1997 10:506
Steve,

    Is he remembering that he has to partition the platter in Disk Administrator
first, before formatting,just like any other disk ???

    No, I think he thinks its just being used like a giant floppy.
    I'll get back to him and have him go into Disk Administrator, and try
    to partition it.

    By the way, do you have one of these on an NT system?
    If so, which media type, i.e. bytes/sector, are you using?

    Thanks,
    Steve
831.3I got it working...CSC32::S_WASKEWICZThu May 01 1997 12:3011

    We got it working! The key was to use the "commit changes now..."
    under the Partition scrolldown of Disk Administrator.
    And then we were able to successfully format 1024 bytes/sector
    media resulting in a 1242 Mb size device.

    Many thanks to those who provided realtime assistance.

    Steve,

    Dave DeWorken asked me to ask you to contact him regarding this
    issues. He is concerned about how Microsoft got a RWZ53 so they
    could bless it. It doesn't seem likely that they would do it
    on their own which means someone at Digital provided it. Another
    case of one hand of Digital not knowing what the other is doing.
    Dave wants to try to track the cause of this down.

    I left Dave a voicemail explaining the previous replies, and my
    success in using 1024 byte/sector media in the RWZ53 under NT 4.0.
