3020.0. "Filename maximum length ?" by AUBER::COSTEUX (Le Plat Pays qui est le mien...) Fri Apr 04 1997 11:22

Is there a way to have filenames > 39 characters (more than 70) ?
Does the Spiralog file system allows a such possibility ?

    Thanks for help.

Spiralog doesn't, but there is a future enhancement planned to VMS which will
essentially remove such limits, with the caveat that you enable this on a
per-volume basis and some applications may return cryptic filenames if you
use very long names.

RMS is currently working on the enhancement Steve referred to -- which by the
way, is planned for the next release of Alpha after OpenVMS V7.1. RMS
will be able to manipulate filenames and directory level names of up to 255
characters, with the restriction that the total filespec must be no longer
  than 512 characters.

And to just close off. Spiralog does *not* support file names longer
than 39.39. When HFS is complete Spiralog will be extended (most
probably in the V2 version) to support these relaxed restrictions.
