757.0. "Drunner cancelling out !!" by ICS::CATORIO () Mon Feb 19 1996 09:09

Last Friday nigth my band "Generation Gap" was suppose to play a
two nighter in Leominster. My drummer called at the last minute saying
that the weather was bad and that he couldn't make it. I was in a
state of shock, because I have never been in this type of situation
before. We did the next night on Saturday but I did not say anything
at this time about this. The drummer has a 4 wheel drive vehicle and
we offered to have him stay at our house, after getting to Leominster
after the gig. He cancelled out at 17:00 (5:00p.m.) 4 hours before we
were suppose to play by then the road to me looks ok to drive on and
did not see a problem. NOW I have have to deal with this, anyone would
    like to comment.

    thanks

    Phil

It seems this fella doesn't think the show must go on. The list of OK
reasons to cancel a show is pretty short, in my opinion... a few family
goodies such as a death or near death, illness of the cenceller has to
be in the class of hospitalization or nearly so, etc. Cancelling on
accounta weather has to be by everybody's agreement, including the club
    owner.

Unless I'm getting a wrong impression about what this guy did, I'd be
so furious I'd insist the band fire him as soon as a practical.

I think you need to figure out whether or not you guys agree on what
is a valid reason to cancel a gig (and I certainly agree with .0 and
.1 that the list of valid reasons is VERY short).

I once had to deal with a player who cancelled out on gigs and it
always created a tremendous hassle for the rest of the band.

My feeling is communicate with him, see if you agree, and if you don't,
    get another drummer. Fast!

You would not believe some of the situations my GB band was in and
still played. The rules for wedding bands are even stricter: not
even death is a valid excuse for leaving clients without a band
    on their wedding.

Trying a new band/band member is as hard as trying to find a new
    girl friend.

If you don't have common likes/dislikes, habits the thing
    doesn't work.

Actually trying to have a completely new band is like trying
to have "n" new girlfriends at the same time.

But as with bad girls, let bad musicians go!

He has a 4 wheel drive vehicle and cancelled due to snow ? Methinks
it was probably a convenient excuse for _other_ reasons. Discuss it
with fellow band members. Personally, I'd send the guy on his way, but
sometimes that's easier said than done, especially if you're longtime
buddies/bandmates. If you don't toss him, you need to remind him of
his responsibilities to the fellow bandmates as well as the client.
Whatever you do beyond that extent is really up to the consensus of the
    other band members and yourself.

    "drunner"...

i hear drunners are hard to come by...do U know what a set of new
    "druns" cost these daze??

Where didya play, Phil? Next time, gimme a blast, the wifey and I

My take on it is that it depends... if you're the first or second
band of four playing a tuesday night at Sir Morgan's, and your
entire take for the evening will consist of 1/2 of the cover
charge for the five friends you convice to show up, cancelling
a gig is clearly no big deal. On the other hand, if you're
the head-liner on a weekend night, or (as db mentioned) you're
playing weddings or other important personal events, then missing
a gig is death in this business, and you'll never get another.
It's worth noting however, that you'll never get to point B
if you keep missing gigs while at point A.

Obviously, this gig was important enough that the author of the
base note was upset about it, in which case I would dump the
drummer just on the principle that he clearly has a different
set of priorities than the rest of the band. Hell, I've been
thrown out of bands because my priorities were different. It's
no big deal... and often quite necessary.

Of course, drunners are an odd lot anyway... :-)

I was going to enter a note saying I don't agree with the philosophy
that some gigs should be treated as more important than others (and
therefore less OK to cancel out on), but I decided otherwise when the
example of Sir Morgan's was raised. I'd book a gig there just for the
fun of cancelling out on them!

Thanks for all the help with this one, still having problems with
this but I have been out voted. Since we have 5 members in the band
three have said to keep the drummer (formally drunner). Three to one
    oh well another time.....

    thanks again

I beilive that when the BAND decided to do a gig(either headlining/SMCove
set/etc , it then became a BAND issue to cancel ...not some wimp drunner
that just decided to stay home and "beat his own skins". All gigs have to
be fun and exciting for me. You NEVER know who's in the Sir Morgan Cove
audience. Once the fun, excitment, etc was lost with your drunner, was when
he should have made the decision to bail out.
...If you really you're out voted maybe it's to "find a better class of
losers"%^)

On the "you never know who will be at Sir Morgan's" note, it just
so happens that one of my old bands was booked in there on a
Thursday night as a headliner. Not exactly a huge night, but what
the hay... anyway, we decided since we were the headliners, and
had the longest set, that we would break out some of the more
experimental stuff we did. There were about eight people there,
when we went on so we basically said ".... it, we're gonna have
    some fun."

Anyway, there was this guy sitting at the bar who I didn't know
from Adam, but he seemed to be really digging what we were doing.
The next day, a review shows up in the BOSTON GLOBE of our show!
The guy who was digging us was none other than Steve Morse, the
Globe's music critic. And it was a very favorable review indeed.

On the other hand, all the nice things Morse said about us, and
in turn about our being "regulars" at the Cove, that raging
shmuck Niel (SM owner) said to me a couple years later (after
the band had been defunct for a while) that he didn't remember
us at all... what a Bozon Emitter that guy is...

Hmmm,,, Just reading this note,, I gotta
laugh at how odd timing is..

Last night, our bass player pulled one of his infamous
last minute, "My pet hamster Died, can't make practice"
routines.

He 'claimed' the roads would be too bad later on...
(We had some rain / snow going on in Mass..)

but I don't get it... he wasn't even driving, the
Keyboard player was gonna haul him up to practice...

Since the form of this band in January, we've had 6 cancels..
all from the bass player, and all at the last minute.

- Gotta go to New York, I forgot, sorry
- I'm stuck in Burlington, can't get there..
- I've gotta a meeting, won't get done till 9:30
- Gotta go to New Jersey,, just found out...
- It's snowing too hard, I don't wanna drive...
and now this one...

to me anyway, clearly he's coming up with better things
to put his time into on practice night, and well basically,
"screw" the band, add to this, he knows that one of the guys
actually leaves work early, and gets docked, to make practice,
that's now time AND money lost.. We've all agreed that
cancelations would have to be done, prior to 2:30..

On top of this, he's now pushing the responsibility of his
canceling to the Keyboard player,,, asking Brian to call Ron,
and cancel for him,,, What are we dealing with here, a child ???
So bad enough we're getting the old 'Any reason is good enough
reason' now he refuses to even make the calls,,
He never called Ron to cancel, just left it up to Brian, who told
him that there was no way he was cancling for his behalf (Rich)

So, figuring "it's" on, Ron gets a call from Brian, at 6:30 p.m.
(half the guys are on they're way already) to see if Rich called,
to which Ron says 'No, what for ???'

Off go the rockets,.

So now, Ron calls Rich, Rich complains about the roads,
Ron says, "Hey what's the deal, Brian is driving what's the
beef.." Rich says "Brain's not driving,," eeeehhhh, Wrong
answer, Brian had just told Ron that he didn't understand
what was going on cuz he'd offered Rich a ride... (as he
always did..)

Ron tells Rich, to hang up the phone, and for the next
ten minutes, think about you're level of commitment to this
band, if you can't decide in ten minutes, than you're not
into it.. IF you don't call me back, then we'll know your
answer..

Rich NEVER called back... Ron called him at 9:15, 9:30 and
9:45,,, no answer...

So, we summarily fired Rich last night... Obviously his
commitment level isn't there...
