Hi folks! As a Genesis fan I love the double live album "Seconds out". OK, I know there was no more Peter Gabriel, but that forced to the apearence of 2 great drummers : Chester Thompson and Bill Bruford. Phill has a preference for Chester and Bruford appeared in just one song "Cinema show" in a great duo with Phill. Since then, Chester is the drummer in all the Genesis tours. One year ago I took a magazine about Midi music and was a great interview with keyboardist "Chester Thompson", and noticed that the "Santana live in Sudamerica" was coproduced among Carlos Santana and Ch. Thompson who also plays the keys. Are we talking about the same Chester Thompson? If not, wich is the one who played with Frank Zappa? (I could make this question in the ::ZAPPA conference but no one posts there anymore!) Happy '96 !! Carlos

There are two Chester Thompsons. One is a keyboard (primarily Hammond B3 organ) player, who is the one who played with Santana. The other is the drummer, who also played with Power Station (among others). -b | |||||

The drummer Chester Thompson played with Weather Report and Frank Zappa before his association with Genesis...Chet's 1st gig with Genesis was Jan 1, 1977, Rainbow Theatre, London, the 1st show of the Wind & Wuthering tour...Phil C enjoyed playing with Bill Bruford, but I think Phil felt more comfortable with Chester's playing... fwiw, the Seconds Out album was recorded in PAris in June '77, Genesis played 5 sold out nights in the 18,000 seat Palais des Sports, and most of the album is from the 4th night...'cept for Cinema Show which is Bruford (from the '76 Trick of the Tail tour) on seconds Out at the end of Afterglow, there is a Chester riff that he played lick for lick on FZ's Roxy & Elsewhere album, and I think the riff is at the end of Penguin in Bondage, or....mm, Cheepness maybe? long time since I've heard Roxy...interesting how he used the same riff years after Zappa... Chester was playing with Genesis in Europe when he ran into a friend, Daryl Stuermer, who was playing guitar with Jean-Luc Ponty at the time, Daryl later became the guitarist for Genesis tours since And Then There Were Three... I've seen Genesis 7 times, and Chester also played with PC the 2 times I've seen him, and Chester Rooolz Wes |
