I always thought so too... that the song started out really great, got
a little worse when the signature riff came in, was in deep trouble
once the singing started, and then completely went down the drain at
the end.

Yes, that's the part I'm talking about, but really most of the "noodling"
is being done by too many guitars. Keyboard wise, I think there's only
one piano in that section. I might be wrong, though. It's been quite a
few years since I last listened to it.

For an interesting change of pace, check out Jackson Browne's version
on his "For Everyman" album. A very nice version with a more laid-back
attitude and wonderful pedal steel work by Sneaky Pete Kleinow and guitar
work by David Lindley. I much prefer it to the Eagles version, although
I admit that that might be because I've heard the Eagles' version 60
gazillion times. :-)

They must have been the only ones that noticed that serious music had
fallen over! :-)
Seriously, though, I'm curious as to what you meant by that statement.
I never thought the Eagles sounded like the southern rock bands, at least
not like what *I* think of as southern rock. Perhaps you meant country
rock bands, which I don't think of as southern rock. For example, I
personally don't consider Lynnrd Skynrd (sp?) or Molly Hatchet to be
country rock, but I do consider them southern rock. I would consider
country rock to be more along the lines of the Flying Burrito Brothers
or Commander Cody, among others.
Could you give some examples of Eagles work that fall before and after
this demarcation? And perhaps some examples of southern rock bands whose
coattails they were riding?

No, there's no way I'd confuse them with any of the bands normally
associated with "Southern Rock" (Lynryrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchett, the
Outlaws, etc.). They're more in the mould of country rock bands like
the Flying Burrito Bros. (though, IMO, the Eagles don't deserve to be
mentioned in the same breath...too poppy by half!).
One of my fave moments from any live album is Southside Johnny & the
Asbury Jukes' "Reach Up and Touch the Sky" when Johnny announces that
they're going to do a relaxed, West Coast-style show ("get your

cuts him short ("Forget it!") and the band go into one of their own
songs!
