| Well, it was written by Bobby Troup, but I *think* Nat "King" Cole
recorded the original version. Probably the definite one was done by
the Rolling Stones: track one, side A of their very first album (way
back in '64)...what a way to start!
However, it's become very much a standard for R&R and R&B bands. Off
the top of my head, I can think of versions by:
Them (w/Van Morrison)
The Count Bishops
Jo Jo Zep & the Falcons
The Cramps (I kid you not!)
Radio Birdman
Chuck Berry (I'm a bit hazy on this one)
And there are certainly dozens of others.
Dom
P.S. Billy Bragg did a great parody called "The A13 (?) to
Shoeburyness", which basically adapted the song for Anglophiles!

Actually, Americans aren't that consistent. In my neck of the woods
(Baltimore Maryland, just north of Washington DC) most people seem
to pronounce it "root".

| RE: *rowt* vs. *root*
I seem to encounter both pronunciations, about 50/50. This is particularly
frustrating for me, as I write software for routers! After oscillating between
the two for a while, I've settled on *root*er, and am resigned to the frequent
befuddled stares and "oh, you mean *rowt*er"s...

just to add to the confusion, a 'Router' pronounced 'rowter', is a
Woodworking tool - or at least it is in the UK. Now, if we're gonna
pronounce a 'Roooter' (as in networks) as 'Rowter', what can we call
the woodworking thingy ? There aren't many options left (well non as
far as I can see) and we can't have the same name for both....

Roto-Rowter ???
or rowdy...is it rooty ??? root beer, rowt beer ???

Back to Rute 66, %^), can anyone pen the words for me. I love the tune
too and if you want to here R&B sung techno-pop style, check out
Depeche modes version the next time you hear them on the radio
(probably have to go to 95.5 Prvidence Rhode Island for that one!!)
Anyway, all I can think of is:
"If you ever get the urge to motor west
Take the hiway, take the biway that's the best
Get your kicks on route 66"
anybody with lyrics please supply. I'd be grateful,
Grateful Fred

Ditto.
I believe that 'Depeche Mode' is a French idiomatic expression
that means 'boring, repetitive, and essentially devoid of any humor'

| You must check out the version by Asleep at the Wheel,
a Western Swing Band. IMHO the best......

| I agree that Asleep At The Wheel does the best version *I've* ever
heard. I think it is also covered on last year's release by the Brian
Setzer Orchestra. A classic song.

Asleep At The Wheel had a studio recording of "66" quite a few moons
ago. It went over well enough in concert that when they recorded their
"Alive And Kickin'" CD in 1991, they chose _it_ for the opening tune of
the album!
Great tune - and if you like swing, check out the album!

at this tune is a DISGRACE. Please just go away !

| Just thought i'd add a different spin. I like swing and pretty much a
hard edged R&B is what i like best but I just thought that Depeche
mode's reading was in the the category of "something completely
different". Sounds like some of you needed to blow of steam about
something anyway. hope your delicate sensibilities weren't too
offended!!
