Hmmmm, not sure where you would find that combination :-)
The Boston area has lots and lots of places to see live music. There's a WWW
page on the Boston Music Scene, you might want to browse through that...

| Your best bet for music of that nature would be Johnny D's in Davis
Sq ( 17 Holland St, Somerville ).
The cover varies nite to nite depending on the act. National as well as
local bands i believe play 7 nites a week.
The booking is very eclectic, from blues to funk to zydeco to folk to
rock, etc etc
Call at 617-776-9667
Nice ( relatively ) safe "college" type of area also.
informationally yours

Lance,
Thanx for the Boston Music Addres, I found it later on in another
noteconference. I tried to connect whole day, but I couldn't get access :(
But i got another 5 months to try befor I go :)
I hope I will have a great time in Boston, because i'v never been
there, even not in America. (I am from Holland)
Re: 4 & 5
Peter,
That was nice to read ! A place at Holand street :) I will keep
the place in mind. It's not a problem to drive a couple of miles
because we can use a car overthere. I hope driving in Boston is
not such problem. You wrote that is was a nice "safe college" area.
Do you mean that there are a lot of not "safe" areas in Boston where
I should be aware of (Hope it's good English :)
Well both thanx anyway, more information is ofcourse always welcome

| Hey Emiel ( how do you pronounce that ? )
Like any major city, Boston has parts that you have to be a bit more
careful in.
But i'm sorry if i sounded like an alarmist, Emiel, we in Boston enjoy
one of the safest cities in the states and rarely is there trouble in
clubland.
Have a nice visit when you get here!

| You can also take public transportation to Johnny D's.
The subway system in Boston is called the 'T'. There are 4
different lines: Red, Blue, Orange, and Green. Johnny D's is
located in Davis Square, which is a stop on the Red Line.
Very convenient - particularly if you want to have a few drinks!
When you get to town, go to any newsstand and get a copy
of a weekly tabloid called The Boston Phoenix. It has listings
for clubs with live music all around town. The Thursday edition
of The Boston Globe (a daily newspaper) has an Arts & Entertainment
tabloid section called Calendar with club listings also. I think
the Phoenix comes out on Thursday also.
There is a Web Page called Boston Online at URL:

696.9 | Pronouncing .... | NETRIX::"[email protected]:)" | An Other Caller Out Of Space | Thu Feb 09 1995 04:15 | 27 |
| Hi Peter,
I was suprised by your question, how to pronounce my name.
Didn't you ever heard of that name?? I guess if so, i am gonna have
a lot of fun in the states by people trying to pronounce my name :)
Well it is quiet simple. You know how to pronounce Email, now turn
around the E and ai and you got aimEl. And that is the way how to
call me correctly :)
Louise,
So the subways got colors overthere. Is it expensive to take the
subway ? Does it ride a lot times around in an hour ?? Are subways
dangerous areas ?? Wow that were a lot of questions :)
And about the drinks, that part I like very much also. I don't
know anything about drinking rules in the States so if you don't mind
I ask some other questions Ok ?? Is drinking expensive, what age do
you need (23 right now), is it allowed to drive with the subway
if you are a little "drunk". (With little I mean just a couple of beer! :)
I hope I don't give you hard times to answer the questions, otherwise
take a drink :)
Greetinx
Emiel or should I say aimEl

| You are going to owe me a few drinks when you get here for
all these answers!
The Boston subway system is pretty safe. Although I must confess
that I stick to the Green and Red lines. The Orange line doesn't
go anywhere that I want to go. Ditto the Blue line except for
the Airport. The T runs from about 5 or 6 in the morning until
about 1 am I think. - Maybe later on weekends - I'm not sure.
Trains on the busy lines - like the Red and Green run about
every 5 or 10 minutes - depending in the time of day. Not
a problem. The fare is $.85 for a one-way trip. If you
are going to do a lot of moving around I think you can get a pass
of some kind, like for the weekend. Not 100% sure on this.
You can't actually drink on the subway, and you shouldn't be
falling down drunk and throwing up either - but there is no problem
with having a few drinks and taking the T. They do not administer
a test before you get on the train! Drinking age here is 21.
Driving a car while intoxicated is a serious offense, so taking
public transportation if you've had a few pops is very
social acceptable, and the cool thing to do.
I'm sure this discussion is fascinating to the other readers of this
conference, but if you want to ask me more questions, why don't
you send me some mail directly.

| Re 11:
I guess we changed the Boston Music subject by drinking at the Subway :) Well I will come
back to the subject Music for the interest of other people who read this note. And other
questions will be send to you personally, Ok ??
I heard Boston is a city where is a lot of music. Is that right ? Are there some Music
festivals in the Summer ?? Like North Sea Jazz Festival here in holland?
In the period May - July are a lot of festivals over here(holland) mostly Jazz festivals
in different places. We got Jazz In Duketown, Jazz in Lighttown, Northsea Jazz etc. etc.
Is this kind of music also so popular in the states (&Boston) ?
I guess you're gonna tell me i just have to read the Boston/Music notes, but they are still
not accesable for me :(
Regards,
Emiel

| And while we're on the subject of the T . . .
This Saturday, May 13, WGBH holds its annual "T Party." There'll be
live music of many genres at six or seven T stops. I'll be emcee'ing
from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. outside at Back Bay (you don't even have to go
into the T for this one, although you do at the other stops). The
bands I'll be introducing are Johnny Hoy and the Blue Fish and Paul
Rishell and Little Annie.
Saturday is also the day we're having our annual "Community Day."
So from 9:00 to 11:00, I'll be fundraising live from Johnny D's
in Somerville. The band is Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters.
