| If you like "The Book of Invasions" check out:
- "Dancehall Sweethearts" - more "folksy" and genuine and than "The Book.." but
very good indeed.
- "The Tain" - sort of a "concept" album , draving from the Irish myths and legends,
much the same like "The Book...".
I really used to like Horslips way back when. Wonder whatever happend to em? Still
around?

Title, tracks, etc? I don't think it was ever released in the U.S.
but I heard an import copy once and remember quite liking it.

I have:
"Aliens"
"Short Stories - Tall Tales"
"The Man Who Built America"
on record. They're good, but not as good as "The Book of Invasions".
And I think the most recent album came out in maybe 1983/1984 or
so, that I know of.

but individuals who have obtained your credit card details.
We are using an ordering method that gives maximum protection
to your credit card details.
To register your credit card details with PastelBlue you will need

You may enter your name and address before printing, but please
write your credit card details and password BY HAND in block letters.
This is to prevent your details passing into the wrong hands.

684.11 | The Unfortunate Cuppa . . . | PCPLOD::COHEND | A pint! That's nearly an armful | Tue Feb 07 1995 11:23 | 28 |
| Just found this ...
I was and still am a very BIG Horslips fan. I went to about six of
their gigs in Manchester (UK) in the mid-70's, so I followed them
pretty strongly.
I guess their best 'critically aclaimed' albums are The Tain and The
Book Of Invasions, the latter being re-issued on DJM, when they started
to get bigger here. They even appeared on Top Of The Tops singer The
Man Who Built America, if I remember rightly. After 'Invasions' I felt
they started to lose the style that set them apart, and by the time of
'Short Stories, Tall Tales', they were sounding like just another band.
I spoke with Johnny Fein (guitarist), quite a few times - he was shy
and retiring, but an excellent player. The bas player, who did a lot
of the vocals and who's name escapes me, went on to do a lot of vieo
work; Bono (U2), cited Horslips as a big influence.
I certainly recall a whole chapter being devoted to them in some book
on Irish music, published about 5 years ago.
Also, Barry McGuigan, the boxer, use to use 'Trouble (with a capital
T)', from TBOI, as his music introduction on big fight nights.
Very fond memories indeed . . .
Dave.

[U2? I can't stand U2, and really have a hard time hearing any
kind of resemblance. Unless when Bono says "influence" he
means "if that Irish band can do it, so can we". 8^)]
I have a few records of theirs, 1 CD ["The Book of Invasions"],
and am waiting for my order to come in from overseas with about
14-15 more CD's, so I hope I'll be at least reasonably impressed
with their other material.
We'll see.
"The Book of Invasions" is on my "Top 10 of all time" list, for
sure, although it'd be hard to rate it exactly.

Got a box from England last night ... looks like I got 12 out
of the 14 Horslips CD's I ordered, and hopefully the other 2
will be on the way soon [out of stock at the moment].
Now I have alot of listening to do. 8^)

I listened to "The Tain" this morning ... these guys have some
excellent instrumentals!! Most are 1-2 minutes long, and are
used as "intros" that blend/segue into the next song, while
some are "continuations" from the previous song that sort of
"become" the following song, if you know what I mean. And some
have almost a hypnotic effect ... impressive combination of
flute/mandolin/etc.
|
684.16 | | BUSY::BUSY::SLABOUNTY | Trouble with a capital 'T' | Tue Mar 14 1995 11:18 | 15 |
|
I listened to "Tracks from the Vaults", and can't seem to figure
out what the point was. There are a few tracks from their other
albums [and for all I know they're ALL from their other albums],
but they're not demo versions ... they're exactly like the tracks
from the albums.
I also listened to "Straight from the Horse's Mouth" ... this
was a "greatest hits" collection of about 20 songs, maybe 1/2
of which I hadn't heard yet. This contains the ultimate Hors-
lips instrumental ... "King of the Fairies", which also appears
on "Tracks from the Vaults".
So that's 6 albums down, 6 to go.
