682.0. "Amazing Grace" by LARVAE::BRIGGS_R () Wed Nov 09 1994 05:36

    In 1969/70 there was a 'progressive' sounding version of Amazing Grace
    knocking around here in the UK although I don't think it made the
    charts or anything. It was instrumental and my memories are of it being
    played on electric guitar with lots of sustain.

    I always thought it was the 'theme' for the Woodstock event but having
    watched tons of Woodstock footage I have never heard it or seen it
    referred to.

    Has anyone any idea who this might have been?

    Chris Squire of YES fame did a version on AG on bass...quite an
    interestng version, I'm not sure at the moment when it was released
    apart from it being included in the Yes-Years box set

    hope that helps

    I read an interview with guitarist Steve Morse (of the Dregs) where
    he mentioned that someone had a hit with this, but I don't remember
    offhand who it was that did it (I think I would've remembered if it
    was Chris Squire).

    I'll see if I can find that interview again.

   Phil Keaggy does one on "Master and the Musician", using an E-bow sustain-
   er, but that version is newer than the requested timeframe.

    Well, don't tell me Notes is goimg to let me down. This'll be a first.
    Come on, I'm talking 1969/70. One-off minor hit (in UK at least) for a
    band. Instrumental (in a progressive style a la Frijid Pink (House of
    Rising Sun) from what I recall). American band I'm convinced. I'm sure
    it was associated with some big festival (but it wold appear not
    Woodstock).

I'm not sure who you're talking about, but Peter Gabriel did an excellent
version of Amazing Grace. It is on "Taxi"

I think that's Brian Ferry you're referring to who did Amazing Grace
on "Taxi"...

Yep, my mistake. When I entered that I had just finished talking about PG
and Genesis in GRATEFUL, so I had them on my mind.

682.12version by Bob Snyder?AWATS::WESTERVELTTue Nov 29 1994 15:126
    I'm looking for a (current?) version of Amazing Grace done on
    a sax (trombone?) by a guy named Bob Snyder. If anyone can
    point me to more information on this, I'd sure appreciate it.
