661.0. " NARAS Hall of Fame " by EZ2GET::STEWART (an E-ticket ride at Neuro-Disney) Tue Jul 26 1994 13:04

National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Inc.

Entries requested for the 1995 Hall of Fame Awards

"The Trustees of the Recording Academy have created the NARAS HALL OF FAME AWARDS in
order to honor outstanding recordings which were released prior to January 1, 1970.

If you have specific knowledge and interest in this recorded heritage, please submit the
recordings of your choice on the enclosed Entry Form and return the form to NARAS, in the
prepaid envelope provided.

    --

OK, well you're out of luck as far as the prepaid envelope goes, but if you've got a good suggestion
for candidates, I'd like to see it. The form I have asks for:

1. Title and Artist(s)
2. Single, Album, or Track from Album name
3. Year of Release
4. Label
5. Record or Album #
6. Speed
7. Other Credits: (such as name of conductor, songwriter/composer, producer, engineer, arranger,
etc. Please show appropriate credit by each name.)

I bet this is the year Jimi joins the ranks! The next reply contains
the list of recordings already inducted into the Hall of Fame. It's
    long, but interesting...

Thanks for posting that -- very interesting, from a first browse.

When I get a chance, I might dissect it a little (extr a copy and
cut/paste by genre), just to get a fix on what's there & what's not.

The jazz selections are interesting -- hard to quarrel with what is there
(vs. what is not). I did find it a little puzzling that they "inducted"
Thelonious Monk's 1951 "Round [About] Midnight", since it seems to me Monk
himself recorded several stronger versions of it (as did Miles Davis,
sometimes-credited co-composer Dizzy Gillespie, and a host of others).
Among early Monk stuff, his 1948 "Ruby My Dear" might be more "classic"...

I think they're celebrating the artist's original recording of the song,
rather than as his best recording of it (same for Fats Waller's 1929
  "Ain't Misbehavin'", arguably).

Just a random personal nit, though -- interesting list. - Jay
(Guess it makes sense that Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams are the
initial commercial-country inclusions... Would expect Carter Family
soon. Would expect more blues and R&B over time.)
