Who the heck is left in Poco these days anyway? Last I heard of them
they had some UK rhythm section behind Rusty Young...who's singing?

| Rusty and Paul Cotton are the remaining members of POCO. They
both take lead vocals. The drummer was from Boston and the bass
player from Springfield MA. Not sure if they are "POCO members" or
if Rusty and Paul pick up players regionally like Chuck Berry does.

They were such a great band! Their live album was great as
was/is "Good Feeling to Know".

I remember when I first got "Deliverin'" (the live album I assume you're
referring to) back in, I don't know, probably the early 1970s. I thought
the the vocals sounded to good to really have been performed live, and
assumed they'd been overdubbed in s studio afterwards. I later saw them
live, and they really *could* sing that well live! I especially remember
being amazed that the drummer could sing all the high parts so perfectly
while never missing a beat on the drums.
I also liked the "Good Feeling To Know" era Poco, but they'd really started
to become a different band by then. More rock, less country.

| Yeah, Richie's last straw was how poorly (relatively) "Good Feelin to
Know" was. Jim Messina had broken big with that other guy ;-), Steve
Stills went on to bigger and better.
Poco's music still brings me great pleasure and I like *most* of what
they put out save for the last couple (Inamorota, Blue & Grey) that
just passed me by.
Of course Tim Schmit is nnow with that other (former) country/rock
band, The Eagles. BTW - Paul Cotton put out a solo album a year or so
ago called "Changing Horses." Kinda sounds like tropical Poco.

Just to pick nits, Stills was never in Poco, although he had been in
Buffalo Springfield with Richie Furay. Actually, Messina was in Buffalo
Springfield near the end after their original bass player (I can't remember
his name just at the moment) was deported to Canada.

If you *really* want to be a completist, keep your eyes out in the used
vinyl bins for Illinois Speed Press, the group (actually a duet) Paul
Cotton was in before Poco.

It's been many years since I last listened to it, and I don't remember
very much about it. I *do* remember that it has the original version
of "Bad Weather" (later done on Poco's "From The Inside" album). The
Poco version has one more round of key modulation than the ISP version
(they had the singing chops to pull it off. Man, those guys could sing
high!).

I wasn't implying that Stills was in Poco. Only that Richie had now
seen several former bandmates (Stills, Young and Messina) make it big
and that he hadn't.
I too have the Illinois Speed Press lp with "Bad Weather"...bought it for
that song. Don't remember too much about the rest of the album. Richie
has several solo lps out as does Tim Schmit.

Oh, I see what you meant. Yeah, I agree.
In that vein, another ironic group was the Souther, Hillman, Furay Band
(that might not be the exact correct name). Three guys (J. D. Souther,
Chris Hillman, Richie Furay) that never really quite made the big-time.
Probably the worst thing that ever happened to Hillman's career was the
death of Gram Parsons. Probably the worst thing that happened to Furay's
was the demise of Buffalo Springfield.
As long as I'm ragging on people, I'll even theorize that a big reason
Poco never made it really big was their lousy song lyrics. Sure, there's
an exception or two, but mostly their lyrics tended to be rather insipid.
Of course the problem with my theory is that there's been lots of
successfull rock acts with lousy lyrics. :-) Chicago comes to mind. I
really loved the music on their first three or so albums, but when I go
back and listen to them today I'm struck by the really poor quality of
their lyrics.

I can't understand why they didn't make it big(ger) like the Eagles.
I've always preferred POCO, but it's tough to win an argument with a
"hit single" machine like the Eagles (who I also like alot....I don't
mean this to be an Eagle bashing......)

I didn't really mean mine to be Poco-bashing either, although I guess I
*did* bash their lyric writing. :-) I like them in spite of their lyrics.
Hmmm, I'd probably have to (grudgingly) give the Eagles the edge over Poco
in the lyrics department. Probably more important, though, the Eagles
consistently came up with good hooks in their songs (at least the singles,
anyway). Hooks are very important in the pop music business.
Hmmm, must be time to go listen to Mojo Nixon's "Don Henley Must Die". :-)

Rose of Cimmaron appeared on the "Rose of Cimmaron" album !
It was recently re-issued on CD on a small label called "One
Way Records." The song also appears on one of the several POCO
collections that are out there. The collection is called "Crazy
Lovin'" and covers the material released on MCA records (I believe.)

| This series will end on August 25th with an excellent show
by Delbert McClinton. I saw Delbert a few weeks ago at the
Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom and he and band were smokin'.
This was one of the best shows I've seen him do. The following
night they played Carnegie Hall in NYC.
This show is a must, and you can't beat the price!!!
