| All I know so far is that there will be 2 seperate shows put on
by 2 seperate shows. One of the groups includes the original
producer, Mark Lainge I believe is his name but could be wrong.
I'm not sure who is putting on the other.
Both shows will be in N.Y. state. One will be near the original
woodstock but they can only get a permit for 25,000 people, yeah
sure. The other will be about an hour away from the orginal site.
This is Mr. Lainge's show. I think he is trying to get a permit for
250,000.
Acts, nothing has been firmed up yet.
Don't quote me on any of this but I think it is a good start.
Anyone else?

were planning on a huge tour and schedule of events this year as part

In fact, they appear in the recently released video of clips of
performers who were not included in the original movie. In Levon's
book about The Band, "This Wheel's On Fire," he gives an account of
their Woodstock experience. Robbie, also, said in an interview that he
didn't feel they really fit in with the mood of the event. He said
they performed between Ten Years After and Johnny Winter, and that they
felt like "a bunch of preacher boys in a ripped up army of mud people."

Personally, I don't think that Robbie was just "cute" when he was

in film anyway - i never had the pleasure in person. Even now, at the
age of 49, I think he's very attractive. Besides, he's still thin and

616.68 | some real event info for you folks... | POWDML::BUCKLEY | Raptor -- Rules the Skies! | Thu May 05 1994 00:06 | 39 |
| Lets summarize here the REAL info (thru all these notes of crap!):
CONCERTS:
1) Woodstock '94 -- Michael Lang, John Roberts & Joel Rosenman, 3
of the original 1969 producers, doing this event in conjunction
with John Scher, President of Polygram Diversified Ventures.
DATES -- August 13th and 14th. Inked acts include Alice in Chains.
Aerosmith, GnR, and RHCP are all close to joining in. LOCATION will
be 840-acre farm in Saugerties, NY. Concert will be promoted/geared
towards "the young, hip" crowd.
2) Bethel 94 -- Sid Bernstein, legendary rock promoter, doing this
event in conjunction with his son, Dylan.
DATES -- August 13th and 14th (both shows are part of the Woodstock
Music & art Fair). Inked acts include John Sebastian, Melanie, and
Richie Havens. Location will be on Max Yasgur's farm, the site of
the *original* 1969 Woodstock concert.
FACT: Only the Woodstock '94 show has their permits in hand to proceed.
Bernstein's permits were approved on January 28th, but red tape
is delaying their delivery. For all intents and purposes, the
Bethel '94 show is really at a stand-still.
FACT: The Woodstock '94 shows will feature all the modernizations of
the 90s, including video monitors, food markets, political &
environmental booths, as well as cultural displays from around
the globe.
FACT: A&M Records will release the Woodstock '94 soundtrack album this
Fall. Hmmm, wonder if the movie and eMpTyV videos will be far
behind??
Buck, who'll pass on both shows, thanks.

event. Apparently, the acts for Woodstock '94 were chosen on the basis
of marketing research. In one particular case, the organizers were NOT

organizers changed their mind (and conversely, other acts they were
originally thinking about tested poorly and were scratched).

| From some of the newspaper reports, info on the WWW, etc. it sounded
like Woodstock would almost be, as stated earlier in this notes file,
like the beginning of a "1984" controlled society.
According to one of the DJ's from WBCN (who is at Woodstock), he is
saying it is great there even though there are plenty of controls.
He said lots of contraband was smuggled in, so there is plenty
of good music, booze, drugs and topless/naked bodies there. (Doesn't
sound that bad:-))
Hopefully on Monday someone can give us some first hand info on the
concert and how good/bad it really was there.

I watched a good part of it during the weekend. It's a long trip
from Denmark to Woodstock, so I trusted the local cable, and
with my 29" TV screen, together with a good quality stereo sig-
nal on my 2X150W hifi, I was almost there in person! And most of
what I saw was very good...I did the following observations:
* Joe Cocker opened the show very well
* Just as he was in the beginning of his amazing
version of 'Summer In The City', a bitch started
babbling all over the music and they started to show
something from the other stage, then got back just
when he finished the song. *#@!!
* There were some annoying swedish commentators throug-
out the weekend, waiting for every possible moment to
come up with some idiotic comments
* Crosby, Stills & Nash were very, VERY GOOD! An absolute
top performance!!!
* Allman Brothers were also FABULOUS! What a guitar show!
* A young man took a good bite of his girlfriend's naked
breast during the Allman Brs. show
* Spin Doctors were good, but lead guitarist could do
with a better sound - and all their songs just sounded
too much the same
* Traffic were good - but Stevie Winwood should keep to
his keyboards instead of trying to do an EC duplicate
* After the show with american gospel, I can now say that
I fullhearted and completely dislike this sort of music
I have a lot more on tape, looking forward to go through it the
next days...

616.94 | What's wrong with a little sanity? | ABACUS::PAGE | | Tue Aug 16 1994 10:24 | 44 |
|
Well, I was there, and though I could write a book about my
experience, I'll just make a few comments...
Those of you who've been bitching about a "1984"-style Woodstock
can relax... everything you heard about rules & security was total
bull***t. There was no security at all. Plenty of cops out front
but they were just directing traffic. All this crap about tent spikes
and drug-sniffing dogs was a scam.
We got there Friday around 4:00. There were metal detectors in
the parking lot, but no one used them-- they weren't even plugged in.
No one checked our bags for drugs or booze, let alone tent spikes.
Security was even more lax at the festival site. One woman at
the gate sat there and just made sure we had wristbands on. By
Saturday, even this minor check was gone. No on at the gate at all.
People were leaving the site in droves to walk down to the
local package stores & bringing back cases of beer; as a result,
it was like camping with Bevis & Butthead. Drunken obnoxious fools
everywhere.
From the beginning, it looked like people had pithced their tents
everywhere and anywhere they liked... there was no Woodstock staff to
organize the tent-pitching or to ensure that pathways were left open.
As a result, to make your way across the grounds, particularly in
the North (Main) Stage area, you had to walk tip-toe just to squeeze
between the tents.
Personally, I wish there *had* been all the security measures
people were complaining about. I went there strictly for the music,
to see all the great bands playing there. And that was mighty difficult
with all the obnoxious beer-guzzlers, the maze of tents, and of course
the mud. You can keep your chaos (which I'm convinced was "manufactured
chaos" by the promoters), all I care about is the music.
Still, it was an adventure & I don't regret going.

| Brad, if you kept your ticket you might be able to get a refund.
I heard on the radio that MANY folks who bought tickets were turned
away by the cops for traffic reasons or something.
The Woodstock promoters said "Sorry, no refunds because we allowed
people to keep their whole ticket stubs and thus have no way of knowing
who got in and who didn't."
Apparently the state of NY is likely to take the position: "Tough shit,
the insufficient traffic planning is YOUR fault and you are liable for
that, the fact that you didn't bother to have measures that EVERY other
concert has such as people tearing ticket stubs doesn't absolve you of
your liability and the burden of proof is not on your customers."
I may be reading something into what was actually said, but that's the
impression I was left with.
So anyone who bothered to keep their ticket stub is probably capable of
getting a complete refund.
Now if I had actually made it in, I'd be going for a refund anyway
given how they totally blew all the security and planning and all that.
I'd have no problem sleeping at night.

Well, I certainly wouldn't say no to a refund, but the fact is, we
had our *entire* tickets confiscated before we boarded the bus. Just
another Woodstock inconsistancy... some people had their whole tickets,
others had stubs, and all we got were lousy wristbands. Personally, I
would have loved to keep my ticket stub for a keepsake, but they made
us hand them over. I do still have the wristband, though.
As far as violence, backstage or not, I didn't see or hear any
fights, thank god.

From what I understand (Bost. Glob) Aerosmith was upset that they couldn't do
certain things (stage props/lights and effects etc) and their Mgr (named
above) was pissed that Metallica was allowed to do all of this (including
fireworks and pyrotechnics on stage). A scuffle then started with John Scher
over this...The Aeorsmith mgr ended up punching Scher in the face and others
(fuzzy here) broke it up...Scher got punched once according to the Globe.
that's what I read in last weeks Globe.

Considering that the PPV showed complete sets by just about every
main-stage act, I doubt that it was PPV's choice not to show the
Gabriel set. The only explanations I can come up with are either there
was a technical problem or maybe some contractual thing (since Gabriel
has a live videotape coming out in the next couple of months, which is
also going to be shown on the Disney Channel) that prevented the whole
set being shown. They didn't even show any of it on the overnight
broadcast (which is when they generally played catch-up with missed
main-stage acts). I haven't seen or heard an explanation anywhere...

worked at Woodstock, and I've been involved with transportation
planning for the event since around March. I was fortunate enough to
work backstage Saturday for 4 hours. There's 105 replies to this note
and around 95 of them are about how bad Woodstock is going to suck!
Then maybe 2-3 people write in about PPV and a couple write in who
actually went. It's amazing how many opinions people have when they
haven't even got a CLUE! Has everyone forgotten the definition of
"credibility"?
380,000 people got together for 3 friggin' awesome days and nites of
music! We ALL got along, considering the lack of security (which was
great because we could smoke dope and bring in all the booze we
wanted), no shower facilities, lots of mud, 45 minute lines for food
and NO bathroom facilites after Saturday morning. There were 18
arrests the whole weekend. 18! and 14 of them were outside the
gates...1/2 of those were for DWI. The most serious arrest was becuz
some guy slashed another across the face with a knife. I NEVER once
the whole weekend saw a fight, or heard someone BARK at someone else
for pushing or shoving or splashing mud. Everybody got along and was
peaceful and respectful to each other. I think that says a lot for our
generation! Especially when we live in such a violent society. Many of
the performers said they were surprised that our generation would put
up with the conditions we endured. When they did it in '69, it was a
given (I guess). And whatever scuttle-butt Aerosmith had back stage,
must've put some fire in their britches becuz they put on one hell of a
kick-ass rock'n'roll performance....followed by 1/2 hour of some of the
greatest fireworks I've ever seen. That ended our Saturday at 3:30
Sunday morning.
The medical team did an incredible job too! They handed out 2000 pair
of crutches and 12,000 band-aids....all free of charge. Everyone was a
volunteer. The 2 people that died, died of pre-existing medical
conditions. I heard about 2 births, and a rape but none of the papers
confirm it.
I *DO* sympathize with the many who were ticket holders and didn't get
in. That sucks. The "peace patrol" dropped the ball in a huge way and
I think that Ticket Master will point their fingers and noone will get
a refund. Woodstock was supposed to hire 3000 "security people" for
the colored lots and for entrance security. For some reason they only
hired 1200, and 300 quit on the first day (Friday). So they had no
choice but to take the remaining 900 and put them to work in the most
critical areas. When the state police declared the area 'state of
emergency' Sunday morning, they took over the traffic, parking lots,
and tranportation problems.
Woodstock '94 was great! And it didn't have anything to do with Woodstock
'69! And yes it was a marketeer's dream to make a mint. What concert
event isn't! We created our own Woodstock in '94, our own experience,
and I'm proud to say that I was part of it! It was an experience of a
lifetime.

Nicely put, and yes everyone collectively did ok under those
conditions. It wasn't Woodstock, it was Generation X's 1994 weekend of
music in the woods.
The credit should NOT go to Pepsi, or any of the vendors....the concert
went well....and the PEOPLE deserve the credit for the historical mark
made.
And you're right...ticket Master won't refund anything.....HBO made a
mint, MTV scored too (however foolish their onsight staff was !) and
300K people have a memory to hang on to forever...as do we who did
1969.
Most interesting was the interactive coverage from the WELL on the WWW.

Well, I don't want to get into a big debate over Woodstock '94,
but since I was there, let me expand on my previous reply.
I agree that it's a shame so many of the replies in this string
have been negative. It irks me that so many people bitched about all
the security measures-- I bet the same folks would be bitching now
about the horrible conditions if they had attended the show.
But no way am I willing to declare Woodstock '94 a resounding
success.
I won't complain about the over-priced food, the stench of porta-
sans, the poorly designed water stations, or the fact that we were
bounced between 3 different parking lots because of poor planning.
Those things are bound to happen, I suppose, and I can live with that.
But there is *no* excuse for the lack of security. Sure, maybe
you think it's great that everyone could bring in drugs and booze
at will, but I didn't appreciate all the drunken a**holes with their
"Show Us Your Tits" signs, harassing all the women walking by. These
idiots were everywhere, and they were extremely rude and insulting.
Tell me what statement that makes about our generation...
Even when we got there on Friday, people had set their tents up
any damn place they wanted, making it impossible to walk anywhere.
If that wasn't bad enough, people started putting ropes and string
between their tents to keep you from being able to walk thru. Yeah,
there's the spirit of cooperation for you.
And the garbage... unbelievable! This was supposed to be an
environmentally-aware Woodstock. What a joke. I think I saw a total
of 4 trash barrels the whole time I was there. People had no choice
but to dump trash everywhere. Not that anyone seemed to care. They
happily tossed their garbage wherever they felt like it.
And the crowds down front... We got up early morning and gently
made our way to the front of the main stage and patiently waited there
for hours with all the other nice folks. Of course, as soon as Joe
Cocker hit the stage, every weenie in the place thought they'd squish
down front and shove the decent folks out of the way so they could get
their own view. This always seems to happen at concerts without "assigned
seating", but when there's 300,000 in the place, it's a wee more
intense.
In short, I didn't see any displays of cooperation or working
together. All I saw was "I want *my* beer, I want *my* view in front
of the stage, and this is *my* space-- don't f**k with it."
It disgusts me that in this day in age, with all the attention
paid to Ecology and the environment, and to sexual harassment, that
so many people just don't care... or have a clue. We should be ashamed.
I'm no Greenpeace do-gooder or a Politically Correct mush-mouth, but
what's so difficult about picking up your trash and not insulting
other people?
If they had enacted even half of the security they talked about,
they could have curtailed most of this. The alcohol consumption would
have been lowered (which I dare say would have been better for
everybody), the placement of tents would have been sensible and you
might have actually been able to walk somewhere without it taking all
day, and my $270 worth of tickets might have actually been worth
something, instead of making us feel like *we* were ripped off because
they let every Tom , Dick & Harry walk in unattended.
I must say that the music was fantastic. All the bands seemed to
perform at their best and the sound was excellent, and it looked great...
if you could see it. It wasn't worth the hassle of suffocating at the
front and dodging obnoxious mud people. The best time I had was up at
the "surreal field", away from the massive crowds and mud, listing to
Todd Rundgren's performance. When the "Woodstock '94" album and video
comes out, I will highly recommend it to everyone, because the concert
was great, musically.
And that's why I went... for the music. Not to create some kind
of "Woodstock experience" for my generation, not to buy T-Shirts, not
to drink beer, not to slide in the mud. I went strictly for the great
line-up of artists. Unfortunately, many concert-goers seemed more
intent on selfishly creating their own spectacle than watching the far
more interesting performances on stage.

I wasn't there myself but the report I get from ALL my friends who were

| I spent yesterday afternoon with a group of people where I was the ONLY
one that was NOT at Woodstock'94, mostly looking at 7 rolls of film
that were shot at Woodstock'94 and discussing their mutual observations
on it all. They were all quite positive, but one person had an
insightful comment to the effect of "If you went there with the
attitude that anything could, and probably would happen, and were
willing to roll with it, you enjoyed things. If you went there with
the attitude that you had just spent $135/ticket and expected the kind
of attention, comfort, security, and accessability of a 'normal'
concert event, then you would be sorely disappointed."
I don't know, I wasn't there, but having heard all of their stories, I
wish that I was.
Cheers,
Ken

I never went expecting a clean orderly event, like I was going
to Great Woods or something. I expected it to be pretty crazy. I like
a good, nutty, energetic crowd, but this was something else.
If I could have shimmied up a tree and had a half-decent view of
the show from a distance, I would have been happy. But like I said,
I went *only* for the music, and unfortunately, there just wasn't
enough opportunity to experience the music. Pay-per-view was probably
a better way to experience the music.
That being said, I DON'T regret going. It was an adventure and
an experience worth talking about!

If you think it was "GREAT" that you "only" had face slashings, rapes,
deaths, and had the opportunity to "smoke dope", I can only be glad you
don't go to any of *my* band's concerts.
I'm 34 years old, and have seen a lot of stuff, including the recent
Pink Floyd concert in San Diego. (Now there was a well organized event,
even though they refused to let me bring in a plastic bottle of Evian
water, but were selling beer inside... %-}) I even went to the first
Lalapalooza (where they trashed the lawn at Great Woods). I absolutely
hate it when I have to force my way to the front to see a concert. Worst
case of that was a Lyle Lovett ("And His Large Band") and Ziggy Marley
show up in Manchester, NH a few years ago, where we had (supposedly)
assigned seating, my wife and I had 3rd row seats, and still couldn't see
the concert due to all the "twirley" dancers (read Deadhead wannabes) they
let in front of the 1st row/stage. A little security and "coolness" of the
crowd is *not* a bad thing. (Watching the kid get chased by security when
he lit up a joint next to the "wrong" over 40 type was pretty entertaining,
though... :-))
db, it's one of the few times I agree with you. :-)
