Anyone familiar with Johnny Halliday? I ran across a recording of
his which features him and other well known musicians. What peaked
my interest is that he does the Crudup tune "That's all right, mama"
with Brian Setzer & Stray cats (one of my favs). Also Carl Perkins
appears on this recording. From looking at the titles on the recording
I'd guess this guy is some sort of French rockabilly artist (if there
could be such a thing).
Can anyone shed any light on this guy??? Great trivia question.

Johnny was/is known as the "French Elvis" and has been around for a
LOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGG time, since about at least 1960, I'd guess. We
heard him sing HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN in French class and that was
1964. BTW, he sounded great and I think that I read recently that
he is still very popular in Europe. Hope this helps!

Jim:
I can tell you that Johnnay Halliday was a huge success in France
in the 1960's and an alert Chas Chandler got the newly formed Jimi
Hendrix Experience on the Johnny Halliday bill back in early 1967 i
believe it was. My memory is just average; the way I have this knowlege
is a lot of reading about jimi recently. there are several excellent
books about his (jimi's) life and music so this info was gleaned from
that.

Johnny Halliday filled up the "Parc des Princes" in Paris for 3 nights
running, when he gave a special show to celebrate his 50th birthday.
A lot of his songs are american / english tunes translated into french.
I can't say I like his studio-recorded stuff too much, but he certainly
is what we call a "bete de scene" (ie a stage animal ?)
His son sings as well in a group called David Hallyday & Blind Fish
His 50th birthday concert was on television a while ago, it was pretty
amazing, even for people who don't like him....
